Both direct and indirect drive concepts of inertial confinement fusion rely on targets with cryogenic thermonuclear fuel shells for ignition. Experiments on the Shenguang-III prototype laser facility using laser-driven gas-filled hohlraums show distinct differences between cryogenic (20 K) and warm hohlraums. Although the measured x-ray flux in the photon range from 1.6 to 4.4 keV (Au M-band) is identical between cryogenic and warm hohlraums, the cryogenic hohlraum has a much slower rate of rise and is 20% lower in peak intensity of x-ray flux in the photon range from 0.1 to 4 keV. The reasons for this drive deficit between cryogenic and warm hohlraums are investigated using a similar series of hohlraum experiments. The experiments employ three types of hohlraums to distinguish the effect of a shroud window membrane and condensates. Warm hohlraums with a shroud window membrane replicate the slower rate of rise of radiation flux of cryogenic targets. When the shroud window is present, the measured x-ray flux in the hohlraum shows a drive deficit that decreases with time. However, the measured deficit increases as the viewing angle increases. All of these results indicate that the portion of the shroud not illuminated by the lasers absorbs the outgoing x-ray flux from the hohlraum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multistimuli responsive materials based on the viologen coordination polymers have attracted much interest in the past few years due to the increasing demand for smart materials. In this paper, based on a viologen ligand 1-(3-carboxybenzyl)- 4,4′-bipyridinium chloride (Hcbbpy) and zinc(II) ion, a new crystalline complex, namely, {[Zn(cbbpy)Cl 2 ]·H 2 O} n (1) has been designed and synthesized. In complex 1 , every cbbpy ligand as a bridge links two Zn2+ ions via carboxylate O atom and pyridine N atom to extend to a 1D zigzag chain. The 1D chains are extended to 3D supramolecular structure through π···π stacking and hydrogen bonding. More importantly, 1 exhibits fast photochromic behaviors in response to UV and X-ray due to the formation of viologen radicals. Complex 1 also shows photo-modulated luminescence property in the solid state. In addition, complex 1 can be deposited on filter paper and displays the potential application as inkless print material. Nowadays, photoactive viologen units have been widely encapsulated in metal-organic frameworks and assembled into multifunctional materials with photochromism and other light regulating properties. A novel host-guest MOF material, {[Zn(bcbpy) 0.5 (IPA)]·CH 3 CN} n (1), has been constructed by a viologen ligand 1,1′-bis((3-carboxylatobenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium)-dichloride (H 2 bcbpy·2Cl), isophthalic acid (IPA) and zinc(II) chloride. Complex 1 exhibits UV and X-ray dual photochromism and photo-controlled luminescence properties. Complex 1 also exhibits a temperature-dependent phosphorescence from cyan to yellow when the temperature increases from 77 to 297 K. 1T will be obtained when 1 is heated in air at 230 °C for 30 min, 1T shows less sensitive photochromic property than 1 due to its longer C–H⋯O hydrogen bond distance for electron transfer pathway. In addition, complex 1 has the potential application as an inkless and erasable printing material due to the excellent photochromic property. We present a case of spinal tumor, with fibrohistiocytoma combined with aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) at the pedicle and transverse process of T7 in a 63-year-old female. ABC is a rare skeletal tumor and spinal ABC is extremely rare. Fibrohistiocytoma is a type of primary benign bone tumor. ABC is also a rare bone tumor that most often occurs in the pelvis. The combined lesion of two primary bone benign tumors is relatively rare in clinic. In addition, fibrohistiocytoma and ABC are widely confused with other giant cell containing tumors of the bone. X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) scans were performed and assessed. Finally, the diagnosis was confirmed by pathological tests. The patient underwent surgery and had an extremely good recovery. The correct diagnosis of a spine tumor is important when determining the surgical procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The x-ray emissivity of gadolinium (Gd) and gold (Au) has been studied using the FLYCHK code. The results show that the Gd M-band is lower than 2 keV and that Gd has a higher x-ray emissivity at low temperature. Thus, we proposed a Gd + Au + Gd sandwich design to improve the x-ray conversion efficiency (CE). Under a laser intensity of 1 × 1015 W/cm2, a 11%–17% enhancement of the CE and an optimized x-ray spectrum were achieved in one-dimensional simulation. The enhancement of the CE is mainly due to an enhancement of the soft x-ray flux (0 keV–2 keV). In addition, the high energy x-ray flux (2 keV–5 keV) is lower than that of Au. Particularly at an early stage, the laser ablates the Gd layer, and the temperature of the Au layer is insufficient for producing an M-band emission. Thus, the high energy x-ray flux is rather low. A sandwich design not only takes advantage of the higher x-ray emissivity of Gd under specific conditions in an efficient manner but also simplifies the target fabrication, which is important. Background/Aims: The role of vitamin D in the process of vascular calcification is unclear in patients with chronic kidney disease. We investigated whether serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is associated with vascular calcification in predialysis and dialysis patients. Methods: We included 86 predialysis and 139 dialysis patients. The simple vascular calcification score (SVCS) was evaluated by examining plain X-rays of the pelvis and hands as described previously. The carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV) was assessed with a commercially available device. Results: We found a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in our population (78.2%). Vascular calcification was present in 46.2% of all patients. Higher calcification (SVCS >3) was significantly associated with lower 25(OH)D levels in predialysis and dialysis patients. Multiple logistic regression analysis for SVCS >3 showed that 25(OH)D levels were negative independent predictors in predialysis (OR: 0.781; 95% CI: 0.623-0.908, p = 0.019) and dialysis patients (OR: 0.805; 95% CI: 0.749-0.853, p = 0.009). Lower 25(OH)D levels were associated with higher CF-PWV in predialysis patients, but this inverse relationship was no longer present in multivariate analysis. The Hohlraum physics experiments performed on the SGIII-prototype laser facility are simulated by using our two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic code LARED-H, and the influence of laser intensity on the two-dimensional Hohlraum simulations is studied. Both the temporal radiation temperature and the x-ray spectrum from the simulations agree well with the observations, except that the simulated M-band fraction (greater than 2 keV) is obviously smaller than the observation. According to our study, the coupling efficiency from laser to x-ray is around 70% for SGIII-prototype laser facility Hohlraums. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This note describes multi-updates of the novel flat-response x-ray detector in fabrication technology, experimental application, and data uncertainty evaluation. Unlike the previous design, the compound filter is combined into one piece through an improved fabrication process that greatly enhanced its self-supporting capability. A method of pinhole-array imaging is introduced into the experimental application process to stop any debris from the hohlraum and to uniformly reduce the radiation flux. The experimental results show that this method works well. Furthermore, a method of uncertainty evaluation of the radiation flux measurement by the novel flat-response x-ray detector has been developed. The influence of the radiation spectrum to the flux measurement is analyzed. The evaluation shows that the relative uncertainty of the radiation flux is about 10% in higher radiation temperature condition (Tr > 150 eV) and 16% in lower radiation temperature condition (Tr < 100 eV). The cylindrical vacuum hohlraum energy at the SGIII laser facility [X. T. He and W. Y. Zhang, Eur. Phys. J. D 44, 227 (2007) and W. Zheng et al., High Power Laser Sci. Eng. 4, e21 (2016)] is investigated for the first time. The hohlraum size and the laser energy are intermediate between the Nova and NIF typical hohlraum experiments. It is found that the SGIII hohlraum exhibits an x-ray conversion efficiency of about 85%, which is more close to that of the NIF hohlraum. The LARED simulations of the SGIII hohlraum underestimate about 15% of the radiation flux measured from the laser entrance hole, while the capsule radiation drive inferred from the x-ray bangtime is roughly consistent with the experiments. The underestimation of the SGIII hohlraum radiation flux is mainly caused by the more enclosed laser entrance hole in the LARED simulation. The comparison between the SGIII and NIF hohlraum simulations by LARED indicates that the LARED generally underestimates the measured radiation flux by 15% for the high x-ray conversion efficiency hohlraums, while it can roughly predict the capsule radiation drive inside the hohlraum.
