Background: Targeted alpha‐particle therapy (TAT) has great promise as a cancer treatment. Arguably the most promising TAT radionuclide that has been proposed is 225Ac. The development of 225Ac‐based radiopharmaceuticals has been hampered due to the lack of effective means to study the daughter redistribution of these agents in small animals at the preclinical stage. Purpose: The ability to directly image the daughters, namely 221Fr and 213Bi, via their gamma‐ray emissions would be a boon for preclinical studies. That said, conventional medical imaging modalities, including single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) based on nonmultiplexed collimation, cannot be employed due to sensitivity limitations. Methods: As an alternative, we propose the use of both coded aperture and Compton imaging with the former modality suited to the 218‐keV gamma‐ray emission of 221Fr and the latter suited to the 440‐keV gamma‐ray emission of 213Bi. Results: This work includes coded aperture images of 221Fr and Compton images of 213Bi in tumor‐bearing mice injected with 225Ac‐based radiopharmaceuticals. Conclusions: These results are the first demonstration of visualizing and quantifying the 225Ac daughters in small animals through the application of coded aperture and Compton imaging. For radiological diagnosis and radionuclide therapy, X-ray and gamma-ray imaging technologies are essential. Single-photon emission tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) play essential roles in radiological diagnosis, such as the early detection of tumors. Radionuclide therapy is also rapidly developing with the use of these modalities. Nevertheless, a limited number of radioactive tracers are imaged owing to the limitations of the imaging devices. In a previous study, we developed a hybrid Compton camera that conducts simultaneous Compton and pinhole imaging within a single system. In this study, we developed a system that simultaneously realizes three modalities: Compton, pinhole, and PET imaging in 3D space using multiple hybrid Compton cameras. We achieved the simultaneous imaging of Cs-137 (Compton mode targeting 662 keV), Na-22 (PET mode targeting 511 keV), and Am-241 (pinhole mode targeting 60 keV) within the same field of view. In addition, the imaging of Ga-67 and In-111, which are used in various diagnostic scenarios, was conducted. We also verified that the 3D distribution of the At-211 tracer inside a mouse could be imaged using the pinhole mode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Ventilation–perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (VP SPECT) plays an important role in pulmonary embolism diagnosis. Rapid results may be obtained using same-day ventilation followed by perfusion imaging, but generally requires careful attention to achieving an optimal count rate ratio (P/V ratio) of ≥ 3:1. This study investigated whether the ratio of counts simultaneously acquired in adjacent primary and Compton scatter energy windows (Eratio) on V SPECT was predictive of final normalised perfusion count rate (PCRnorm) on P SPECT using [99mTc]Tc-macroaggregated albumin (MAA), thus allowing for optimisation of P/V ratios. Methods: Same-day VP SPECT studies acquired using standard protocols in adult patients during a 2-year period (training dataset) were assessed. Studies were included provided they were acquired with correct imaging parameters, and injection site imaging and laboratory records were available for quality control and normalised count rate corrections. Extraction of DICOM information, and linear regression were performed using custom Python and R scripts. A predictive tool was developed in Microsoft Excel. This tool was then validated using a second (validation) dataset of same-day studies acquired over a subsequent 7-month period. Accuracy of the prediction tool was assessed by calculating the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). Results: Of 643 studies performed, the scans of 342 participants (median age 30.4 years, 318 female) were included in the training dataset, the analysis of which yielded a significant regression equation (F(1,340) = 1057.3, p < 0.0001), with an adjusted R2 of 0.756 and MSE of 0.001089. A prediction tool designed for routine clinical use was developed for predicting final P/V ratio. Of an additional 285 studies, 198 were included in the second (validation) dataset (median age 29.7 years, 188 female). The Excel-based tool was shown to be 91% accurate (MAPE: 9%) in predicting P/V ratio. Conclusion: The relationship between the ratio of simultaneously acquired counts in adjacent energy windows on V SPECT and perfusion count rate after administration of a known activity of [99mTc]Tc-MAA can be linearly approximated. A predictive tool based on this work may assist in optimising the dose and timing of [99mTc]Tc-MAA administration in same-day studies to the benefit of patients and workflows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work deals with a scintillation detector made of a LuYAP:Ce array coupled to a position-sensitive photo-multiplier tube, whose structure is well suitable for SPECT and PET, but also in nuclear physics, astrophysics, astroparticle physics, homeland security, and non-proliferation. The response was investigated under Co-57, Ba-133, Cs-137 gamma-ray irradiation, and with Lu-176 self-activity. The investigation, based on the 2-D charge-profiles spread, provides means for identifying and rejecting multiple-interactions in the crystal-array, like Lu X-ray escape photons, and Compton-scattered ones. Recently, new high-resolution cadmium–zinc–telluride (CZT) drift strip detectors for room temperature gamma-ray spectroscopic imaging were developed by our group. The CZT detectors equipped with orthogonal anode/cathode collecting strips, drift strips and dedicated pulse processing allow a detection area of 6 × 20 mm2 and excellent room temperature spectroscopic performance (0.82% FWHM at 661.7 keV). In this work, we investigated the potentialities of these detectors for prompt gamma-ray spectroscopy (PGS) in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). The detectors, exploiting the measurement of the 478 keV prompt gamma rays emitted by 94% 7Li nuclides from the 10B(n, α)7Li reaction, are very appealing for the development of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) systems and Compton cameras in BNCT. High-resolution gamma-ray spectra from 10B samples under thermal neutrons were measured at the T.R.I.G.A. Mark II research nuclear reactor of the University of Pavia (Italy). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
