This paper aims to present a version of the poem Edirne by Maʿrūf ar-Ruṣāfī preserved in the Conti Rossini Archive at the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and to compare it with the copies in the collections of Muṣṭafā aṣ-Ṣaqqā, Muṣṭafā ʿAlī and Muṣṭafā al-Ġalāyīnī. The poem was composed on the occasion of the siege and capture of Edirne (formerly known as Adrianople) by the Bulgarian Army (1912-1913) and its themes are war, occupation and ḥamāsah (lit. "valour"). The qaṣīdah in the Conti Rossini Archive, found inside an envelope with other material from Tripolitania, bears in Italian the title "Per la caduta di Adrianopoli" ("For the Fall of Adrianople") and was most likely copied by Conti Rossini himself. The poem is composed of thirtyseven lines, each of which is divided into two hemistichs; the first verse consists of two lines, while the following seven verses consist of five lines each. The present work will focus on the literary aspects of the poem, providing a translation of the text and a description of its salient features, function and meaning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTERPERSONAL relations ,OTTOMAN Empire ,ETHNIC groups - Abstract
The modernizing and Westernizing Tanzimat reforms (1839-1878) were an attempt to transform the multiethnic Ottoman empire into a nation-state. This paper studies the state attempt to form an Ottoman national identity at the local level during the Tanzimat. In studying state reforms and local responses, the paper raises broader questions for the study of state transformations and identity building: How do existing local identities interact with state projects? What kind of local relations, especially social networks, contribute or challenge state reform projects? In answering these questions, the paper studies intercommunal relations in the Balkan province of Edirne. The research is based on the analysis of archive documents that include petitions between the state and the local level. The findings of the paper show that local networks (dense connections between and within ethnic and religious communities) influenced the outcome of the state attempt to form an inclusive Ottoman citizenship in Edirne. Dense connections between communities facilitated local contributions for state projects in the administrative infrastructure. However, increase in state control over the administrative structure did not facilitate the formation of an Ottoman national identity at the local level. Rather, well-organized and closely-knit communities strengthen religious and ethnic identities and led to the failure of the Ottoman citizenship project in the long run. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decorative wall paintings created in the Ottoman era are called kalem işi, and they are generally created using various pigments and binding media on dry rendering, or via lime-paint technique. However, detection of some decorative wall paintings that were applied on wet plaster in Süleyman Pasha Mosque located in Edirne, Turkey, has led to a more detailed analytical examination. Our study aims to research the techniques used on some painting fragments which were found while removing cement renderings during the restoration of the Mosque. The fragments were revealed in 2019 and were taken under protection as these were stylistically different from the existing paintings of the Mosque. The original location of the fragments on the wall could not be located and in situ conservation is not possible, but research continues. Initially, traces of preparatory drawing, which is thought to be the incising technique, were found on the paintings drawn on the rendering fragments. Then, SEM-EDX, FTIR spectroscopy, confocal Raman spectroscopy, and PED-XRF analyses were carried out along with examinations by optical microscopy. Following these results, experimental reconstructions of the paintings were made on test materials and a story about the painting techniques was revealed, indicating that these paintings were drawn on wet rendering (fresco). Therefore, it is considered that there may be different wall painting techniques in Ottoman architecture and that research in this direction should be increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A long history of civilization through various cultural and technological influences, had shaped the Ottoman mosque architecture. Each of the objects has its unique characteristics yet connected each other. This paper examines how the classic Turkish mosque-dome architecture, have evolved by proposing examination on configuration similarities and its connection. The authors address 23 mosques in the high classical period of the Ottoman's era to reveal spatial and technical considerations of the main building. The dynasty's route in architecture from central Asia, Seljuk, Bursa, Edirne, and Istanbul is the context of the discussion. It is undeniable that the development of dome architecture in classical Turkey shows some clear linkages from the previous to the later age. Furthermore, some links connected pre and after Istanbul conquest, which contribute to clarify the dispute of the novelty of the architecture, were discovered [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In modern digital agricultural applications, automatic identification and diagnosis of plant diseases using artificial intelligence is becoming popular and widespread. Deep learning is a promising tool in pattern recognition and machine learning and it can be used to identify and classify diseases in paddy rice. In this study, 2 different paddy rice diseases, including rice blast and brown spot, were investigated in the district of İpsala in the province of Edirne between the 2020 and 2021 production seasons by collecting 1569 images. These diseases are very common and important in Edirne province and surrounding rice production areas. Therefore, practical methods are needed to identify and classify these two diseases. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model was created by applying pre-processing techniques such as rescaling, rotation, and data augmentation to the paddy rice disease images. The classification model was created in Google Colab, which is a web-based Python editor using Tensorflow and Keras libraries. The CNN model was able to classify rice blast and brown spot diseases with high accuracy of 91.70%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Edirne is one of the historical capitals of the Ottoman Empire that contains important monumental and architectural masterpieces. Since ancient times, the Thrace region of Turkey has formed part of the routes linking Mediterranean countries and continental Europe to Asia. Edirne is presently on the route of railways and highways connecting Istanbul to Europe. This is a rich region in terms of historical value, and has been a centre of civilisation throughout history. Karaağaç, a small district located outside the city, also contains historical structures and natural attractions and has its own distinct characteristics and cultural heritage. The project discussed in this paper — the redevelopment of the old ice-making factory, one of the major buildings within the settlement — forms part of a wider revitalisation study on the conservation of the current cultural and natural heritage of Edirne/Karaağaç. The cult of Saint George, which evolved in the Christian era over an almost 2000 years old tumulus in Edirne, historically known as Adrianople, turned with the Ottoman sovereignty into another cult, which took shape around the Khizr-Elijah belief. This hillock was named the Maqam of Khizr/Hıdırlık due to the belief that Khizr appeared and worshipped on top of it, which later witnessed various miracles with associated motifs. In course of time there emerged many and varied fantastic rumors about the origins of the cult. The rumors circulating from person to person and the historical sources indicate that the intense construction activity of the Ottomans at the Hıdırlık cult centre realized especially in the first part of the 15th century. It is clear that the cult centre, which kept growing in the 16th century, contained various dervish lodges, many mausoleums, annexes and a dense population of Bektashi dervishes. The sources of the period reveal that the Hıdırlık cult centre incurred two subsequent demolition attempts in the 17th century. First demolition occurred following a complaint about the sins committed here in 1642 in the period of Sultan Ibrahim I and the second in 1660s in the period of Sultan Mehmet IV after the decision of a new pavilion construction on top of this spacious and partially idle hillock. On the first and obviously partial demolition, most of the inhabitant dervishes left Hıdırlık and the cult centre lost its old density. On the second demolition, the standing mausoleums and graves were razed and a pavilion with a large garden was built instead, which subsisted until the 19th century. After the construction of the pavilion in Hıdırlık there were only one dervish lodge and two mausoleums left standing. As the construction of the pavilion put the cult centre under state supervision, the last standing dervish lodge in the centre was also demolished in the first half of the 18th century. At the end of the 19th century after the construction of one of the biggest bastions to defense Edirne there was no trace left of the cult centre besides the Hıdır Dede Mausoleum, which was also destroyed in Balkan Wars by the Greek inhabitants of Edirne, causing only the grave of the Hızır Dede to reach to the present day. The destruction of the cult centre was related to the Kadızâdeliler movement, which was utterly against the sufistic approaches and had from the first half of the 17th century onwards many fans in the palace and administrative circles. The Kadızâdeliler movement was a religious movement which requested the demolition of the dervish lodges and the prohibition of grave and mausoleum visits, which led to the destruction of various lodges and mausoleums indeed. One of the fundamental issues, which became a conflict between The Kadızâdeliler movement and the sufis was the nature of Khizr. Whereas the Kadızâdeliler supported the idea that Khizr was dead, sufis believed he was alive. Hıdırlık, which came into existence around the cult of Khizr, was a settlement which was totally against the ideas of the Kadızâdeliler both theorically in terms of the belief that Khizr is not dead and also practically in terms of dervish lodge rituals and mausoleum visits. The reason of the demolition attempts occurred in Hıdırlık in the 17th century and led in time to the utter destruction of the cult centre, was obviously the preaches and pressures of the Kadızâdeliler. This paper aims a historical analysis about the embodiment of Hıdırlık as one of the four holy places in Edirne, where it is believed that the prayers are answered and the gradual annihilation of it. This study aims to define the factors that affect users' movement preferences and propose a method to identify the movement patterns in urban space. The proposed method was tested on Edirne-Kaleiçi, which was chosen as the study area. Edirne proves to be an appropriate case given that the spatial construct of the city bears the characteristics and the political-ideological, social, and economic impacts from different periods throughout history. Thus, the effects of socio-economic factors can be observed when movement preferences are identified. In this context, available literature and different perspectives on "movement" were examined, and the components that affect movement were revealed. As a result of the model constructed with "Natural Movement" (based on Space Syntax Analysis Method), "Directed Movement" (based on Urban Network Analysis Method) and other additional components, movement patterns in the urban fabric were determined. Although the choice, integration, and intensity values are high for users according to the physical construct of streets in Kaleiçi, the movement remains in a very limited area due to the socio-economic structure and one type of intensive land-use type (retail). In addition, as a result of the correlations made with the observation data (pedestrian-vehicle counts, land market values), the consistency of the model was tested, and a positive/high-level relationship was determined. This method approach will contribute to the literature because it will help integrate many different attributes under the concept of "movement" and make them questionable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ROAD construction ,OLIVE oil ,WINE tasting ,ROMANS ,POTTERY - Abstract
This contribution explores the archaeological evidence for the supply of imported fineware along the Central road (Via Diagonalis) in the province of Thrace during the Principate. Finds from twelve sites situated in close proximity to its route have been examined. According to the available data, the import of ceramic goods started around the time of the road's construction during the reign of Emperor Nero, at the latest. Italian and South Gaulish sigillata along with thin-walled pottery were among the earliest documented imports in Serdica, together with products of Western Asia Minor and/or the Pontic region. Later on, products of Pergamene (Eastern sigillata C), Pontic and probably also Moesian workshops were attested. Philippopolis, and sites studied from its territory, were supplied with fine wares, originating from Western Asia Minor (ESC, Eastern sigillata B) and the Pontic region (Pontic sigillata) since the second-third quarter of the 1st century AD. During the 2nd and the first half of the 3rd century the majority of ceramic goods came from the Pergamon region, supplemented with occasional imports of ESB, Cnidian relief wares, etc. The sites from the territories of Augusta Traiana and Hadrianopolis, as well as Hadrianopolis itself, were supplied during the 2nd and 3rd century with fine wares mainly from the region of Pergamon. A small number of finds of Eastern sigillata A and B, Pontic sigillata and African red slip ware shows alternative extra-provincial sources of goods. The evidence from the transport containers indicate that the bulk of amphora-borne commodities came from similar to the abovementioned provenances, so it could be suggested that at least some of the imported ceramic artefacts could have been transported as side products of wine, olive oil and other agricultural stocks. This research aims to examine the relationship between high school students' reading habits and their smartphone addiction level. The sample consisted of 512 high school students studying in various private schools located in Turkish cities of Istanbul and Edirne. High school students were included in the study using the convenience sampling method. The study was conducted by using the correlational model of quantitative research methods such as descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way variance analysis, and Pearson correlation coefficient techniques. High school students' smartphone addiction level was found to be moderate, with 8.81 books being read by students over a year. When reading books, students were found to have quitted the reading practice 2.96 times on average. The analysis of the results showed that girls were more likely than boys to tend towards smartphone addiction. As far as the reading habits are concerned, the students who reported poor reading habits or did not read any book during the week, and the ones who expressed a distraction each time reading a book reported higher smartphone addiction levels. A significant positive relationship was found between smartphone addiction and the number of distractions while reading. Consequently, a significant negative relationship was found between the high school students' smartphone addiction level and their reading behaviours, and some recommendations were offered for practitioners and future researchers. Objective: The Turkish anti-tobacco law was accepted and effectuated in 1996. All forms of cigarette advertising, the sale of tobacco products to persons under the age of 18 and smoking in public institutions were all restricted. In this paper, we aimed to evaluate the influence of the Turkish antitobacco law on children for the periods before the law, after three years and after 10 years. Material and Methods: A self-completed questionnaire was distributed among primary school children. This included questions about the children's smoking habits, their opinions of parents' and teachers' smoking habits, tobacco use in public places and the recognition rate of 16 food, drink, cigarette and toothpaste logos and brand names. The first, second and third applications of the questionnaire were performed with students who attended the same classes in the same primary schools, accounting for 772 children in June 1996, 1,157 children in February 1999 and 719 children in June 2006. Results: When these three periods were evaluated, it could be seen that the prevalence of having smoked significantly decreased (13.9%, 4%, 2.2%, p<0.001), as did the rate of purchasing cigarettes within the past week (36.6%, 29.1%, 15.8%, p<0.001). The disagreement with parents' and teachers' smoking habits and tobacco usage in public places increased significantly (p<0.001), while the recognition rates of some cigarette brand names and logos significantly decreased, specifically with regards to Marlboro, Camel and Samsun (p<0.001). Conclusion: The Turkish anti-tobacco law has had a positive effect on primary school children in Edirne, and therefore could be a model for other countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physico-chemical parameters of Tunca, Merich, Arda and Ergene rivers, in the Edirne region of Turkey, were investigated. Studies were carried out during 1998-2004 and the data obtained were compared with EU threshold levels. The results showed that the total concentrations of P, Pb, Cu, Ni, Mn and Co were higher than these threshold levels. There is an urgent need for Turkey to limit water pollution from a wide range of dangerous substances, particularly at a time when it is being considered as an EU candidate. Turkey will be required to achieve a satisfactory status in its waters by 2015, in particular in the waters of the rivers investigated in this paper that border Bulgaria and Greece. Levels of pollutants which pose a significant risk to the aquatic environment need to be monitored and strictly controlled. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous cross-cultural studies have focused on certain aspects of urban housing conditions and their social consequences. However, most data on housing satisfaction is restricted to Western countries. Relatively little comparison has been made between these findings and those in developing areas where rapid urbanization is occurring and where concomitant problems in urban housing are emerging. Moreover, since primary cities of developing countries in the initial stage of economic development have received extensive attention in urban housing research, it would be interesting to examine a non-primary city where relatively good standards of living have been achieved. Thus, this study investigates people’s housing satisfaction in modern and historical neighborhoods. This paper addresses some conceptual and measurement issues related to the study of housing satisfaction. We build a conceptual model, which links the multiple dimensions of housing satisfaction, measured by a modified version of Bardo and Dokmeci’s (, Genetic, Social and General Psychology Monographs 118(3)) housing satisfaction scale, in a causal sense. An empirical examination of the model in traditional and modern neighborhoods reveals that social and environmental living conditions positively influence overall housing satisfaction. The results also indicate that the drivers of the social and environmental living conditions constructs differ between traditional and modern neighborhoods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the main chemical composition, the total phenolic content (TPC), the total flavonoid content (TFC), the total anthocyanin content (TAC) and antioxidant activity (TAA) of blackthorn (Prunus spinosa L.) fruit growing wild in Edirne province were determined. Furthermore, the phenolic compounds composition was investigated by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) and the mineral composition was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In addition, the aim of the study was to investigate the effects of temperature (20–40 °C), time (2–6 min) and amplitude (20–60%) on TPC, TFC, TAC, and TAA of blackthorn during ultrasound-assisted extraction. Response surface methodology using central composite design was used to determine the optimum conditions in ultrasound-assisted extraction of bioactive compounds in blackthorn. The optimum extraction conditions were obtained with temperature 40 °C, time 3.592 min, and amplitude of 33.189%. TPC, TFC, TAC, and TAA of blackthorn were found as 3203.31 ± 4.63 mg GAE kg
−1 FW, 727.41 ± 4.63 CE kg−1 FW, 135.09 ± 0.33 mg cy-3-glu kg−1 FW, and 19.65 ± 0.06 mmol TE kg−1 FW, respectively, which were consistent with predicted values. The ultrasound-assisted extraction can be considered as an efficient green and practical technique for the recovery of bioactive compounds in blackthorn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

FIREWORKS ,EYEWITNESS accounts - Abstract
This article offers a micro-level examination of the firework makers in the 1675 imperial festival which took place in Edirne during the reign of Mehmed IV (r. 1648–1687). It presents a critical approach to the festival, focusing on the firework displays. This study examines overlooked dimensions of the firework displays, such as daily wages and food provisions of the firework makers, their accommodations, and inventories of the materials they used to engineer firework devices. Using eyewitness accounts, festival books, and archvial sources, it reveals previously unexamined aspects of Ottoman pyrotechnics and firework making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The construction project of the Edirne Palace (Saray-ı Cedid-i Âmire, Tunca Saray-ı, Edirne Saray-ı Hümayunu, Hünkdr Bahçesi Sarayı) was started north of the city Edirne and west of Tunca River upon the order of Sultan Murad the II (reign 1421-1451). However, the following year Sultan Murad the II passed away and thus was not able to see the end of the project. The construction of the palace finished and it was in use during the reign of his son Sultan Mehmed the II. (reign 1451-1481). The palace was enlarged various times and it was used until the renovation realised in 1828 which coincided with the reign of Sultan Mahmud the II. (reign 1808-1839). The same year the palace was pillaged by Russians who entered Edirne. Among the Ottoman sultans who used the Edirne Palace, it was definitely Sultan Mehmed the IVth (reign 1648-1687) who was most interested in it for a long time. Sultan Mehmed the IVth who was enthroned at the age of seven and had a reign of thirty-nine years passed most of his reign at the Edirne Palace. His great interest in this palace resulted in the addition of new spaces to the palace building. Within this context, this paper aims to examine the additions made to the Edirne Palace as well as on some renovations within it during the reign of Sultan Mehmed the IVth. The study aims to make a humble contribution to the literature about the history of the Edirne Palace especially its architectural history identifying the data on the additions and renovations made during the reign of Sultan Mehmed the IVth. Furthermore, this study has to be thought as a preliminary work which will form the starting point of a prospective study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the second half of the 4th century, the migration of Goths to the Balkan Peninsula took place, which led to a serious crisis in the Roman Empire. Its consequence was the defeat suffered by the Romans at Adrianople (378), in which emperor Valens died. This battle is considered to be one of the decisive battles in the history of mankind, which has changed the face of the late Roman history to such an extent that one sees it as a caesura marking the end of antiquity. How did the authors of ecclesiastical histories living at that time as those who, after all, devoted a lot of space to political history in their works relate to these events and to the entire Gothic crisis that was the result of the migration of the Goths? Is it possible to see any differences in the presentation of these events by Rufin of Aquileia, Socrates of Constantinople, Sozomen, Philostorgius or Theodoret of Cyrus? The author tries to answer these questions in this article. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study uses a new dataset of 2,246 notarial deeds of house sales from one of the major cities of the Ottoman Empire, Edirne, covering the period from 1720 to 1814. It estimates real hedonic house prices and urban wealth inequality for the housing market. It shows that house size, proximity to the commercial centre, access to fresh water, and family ties were important determinants of relative house prices. These findings also apply to the different quartiles of the market, indicating limited market segmentation. It demonstrates that there was an increase in housing wealth inequality during the eighteenth century as house prices became more dispersed. The hedonic house price index provides evidence that inflation‐adjusted house prices declined substantially following the Russo‐Turkish war of 1768–74. The decline is mainly explained through demographic shocks induced by plague epidemics, natural disasters, and other population movements driven by wars, army mobilization, and political upheavals. WEATHER forecasting ,OCEAN temperature ,WIND speed ,LIGHTNING ,TOPOGRAPHY ,HEATING - Abstract
This study investigates the atmospheric mechanisms triggering flash-flood event in Thrace Basin of Turkey on November 27, 2018. Underestimation of this extreme precipitation amounts by NWP global and regional models (i.e. ECMWF, ALARO, WRF) and other meteorological difficulties (i.e. complex topography, land-sea interactions) in weather forecasting disabled disaster risk reduction before the event occurred. Detailed synoptic, thermodynamic, in-situ, and remote sensing analyzing results showed that significant amount of moisture during the afternoon times of the day was transferred to the atmosphere (from ground to 300-hPa) as a consequence of the excessive heating of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of the Aegean Sea (16.5 °C in Ayvacik-Gulpinar place, 0.9 °C above its long-term normals). Strong southwesterly wind speeds associated with slow meridional movement of mid-latitude cyclone from its origin to the Eastern Mediterranean (EM) enabled transferring of relatively warm moist air to the land areas of Thrace Region (> 300 km fetch distance). Strong updraft and instability conditions under developed a supercell resulted with lightning (totally 63 cloud-to-ground and 59 intra cloud) and heavy rainfall especially Suloglu, Kofcaz, and Edirne settlements with the 12-hour total amounts 160.0, 123.0, and 97.4 mm (rainfall return period ~ 100 years), respectively. Flash-flood event caused numerous injuries and the death of a person and damaged, automobiles, houses, crops, and infrastructure of the Edirne and its neighboring settlements. From Showalter, K, Total of Totals, SWEAT, and CAPE instability indices; SWEAT is most appropriate to represent high possibility of occurrence of severe thunderstorms over the Edirne province owing to low-level moisture, warm air advection and low and mid-level wind speed terms in its equation. Objective: We aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of Essential Tremor (ET) in Edirne and its districts, located in Western Thrace, which is the most western part of Turkey. Methods: In this study, 3008 individuals who could communicate and agreed to participate in the study were evaluated. To obtain the data from the applicants in 30 Family Health Centres in Edirne and its districts, a face-to-face questionnaire that consisted of 37 questions was prepared by the researchers. The questionnaire included general information, questions to evaluate potential concomitant comorbid conditions and questions regarding the symptomatology used in ET diagnosis, as well as questions to evaluate ET severity, was examined with the spiral test. Patients were classified by using the Washington Heights-Inwood Genetic Study of Essential Tremor (WHIGET) diagnostic and clinical evaluation scale. According to the diagnostic criteria for ET (used in participants who were examined and in those whose medical records were reviewed) were similar to those used in astudy conducted in Turkey. Results: Of 3008 individuals, 173 were diagnosed with ET according to the questionnaire results from Edirne and its districts, and the prevalence of ET was 5.8%. Approximately, 43.4% of the patients with ET were male, and 56.6% were female, which was not significantly different (p > 0.05). Participants with tremor related to alcohol withdrawal, hyperthyroidism, anxiety, depression other known causes of tremor were not considered to have ET. Thyroid disease was identified in 0.0% of the cases, and the control group was detected in 1.4%, which was not significantly different (p = 0.170). Psychiatric disease was identified in 0.0% of the cases, and the control group was detected in 1.3%, which was not significantly different (p = 0.271). Conclusions: ET prevalence studies will increase the awareness of the community and provide early diagnosis and treatment, as well as serve as a basis to reduce morbidity and improve the quality of life. OTTOMAN Empire ,JEWISH identity ,ISLAMIC courts ,COURT personnel - Abstract
In the present article, I examine the construction and articulation of urban and communal identities in the early modern Ottoman Empire with special reference to the complex and dynamic local Jewish identities in Edirne. I analyse the terminology used for identifying Jewish litigants at the Islamic court in Edirne based on 12 cases selected from the Islamic court registers. In other words, I scrutinize in which cases the court identified Jews by their membership of a particular congregation (Heb. kahal; pl. kehalim), in which cases by their residential affiliations (Ott. mahalle; pl. mahallat, “urban quarter”), and in which by a combination of these aforementioned ascriptions. In so doing, I attempt to enhance our understanding about pre-modern people who were simultaneously members of multiple religious, spatial, ethnic or occupational sub-communities. More specifically, I examine which of the Jews’ multiple identities (i.e., kahal as religious/ethnic; mahalle as spatial) were emphasized by the judges of the Muslim courts. I suggest that various identification markers were employed by court personnel to define the Edirne Jews. While in some matters the fiscally, administratively, as well as socially defined spatial identity based on the term mahalle was employed, in other cases the ethnic/communal identity based on the Jewish kahal—that was also a taxable unit—was the prevalent concept.
