Abstract

Soils have achieved prominence in the political agenda of the European Commission with the proposal for a Soil Monitoring Law and the ambitious Soil Mission research framework. The EU Soil Observatory (EUSO) used the latest state‐of‐the‐art pan‐European datasets to propose a preliminary assessment of soil health in the EU based on 18 soil degradation proxy indicators. The body of knowledge will soon be enriched thanks to the investment of 1 billion euros towards the Mission 'A Soil Deal for Europe', which has the ambition to promote the development of new harmonized bottom‐up and top‐down soil health indicators. New data and knowledge are also anticipated through the national soil monitoring schemes to support the implementation of the Soil Monitoring Law. We present the Soil Mission roadmap towards assessing and achieving soil health in the EU by 2030 to meet Green Deal objectives. We introduce the EUSO Soil Health Dashboard, a soil degradation indicator tool using soil health indicators developed by the European Soil Data Centre (ESDAC) (2012–2023) that will contribute to Soil Monitoring Law assessments. Abstract

To obtain a higher accuracy for the real-time Zenith Tropospheric Delay (ZTD), a refined tropospheric delay correction model was constructed by combining the tropospheric delay correction model based on meteorological parameters and the GPT3 model. The meteorological parameters provided by the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) Atmosphere and the zenith tropospheric delay data provided by Centre for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE) were used as references, and the accuracy and spatial–temporal characteristics of the proposed model were compared and studied. The results show the following: (1) Compared with the UNB3m, GPT and GPT2w models, the accuracy and stability of the GPT3 model were significantly improved, especially the estimation accuracy of temperature, the deviation (Bias) of the estimated temperature was reduced by 90.60%, 32.44% and 0.30%, and the root mean square error (RMS) was reduced by 42.40%, 11.02% and 0.11%, respectively. (2) At different latitudes, the GPT3 + Saastamoinen, GPT3 + Hopfield and UNB3m models had great differences in accuracy and applicability. In the middle and high latitudes, the Biases of the GPT3 + Saastamoinen model and the GPT3 + Hopfield model were within 0.60 cm, and the RMS values were within 4 cm; the Bias of the UNB3m model was within 2 cm, and the RMS was within 5 cm; in low latitudes, the accuracy and stability of the GPT3 + Saastamoinen model were better than those of the GPT3 + Hopfield and UNB3m models; compared with the GPT3 + Hopfield model, the Bias was reduced by 22.56%, and the RMS was reduced by 5.67%. At different heights, the RMS values of the GPT3 + Saastamoinen model and GPT3 + Hopfield model were better than that of the UNB3m model. When the height was less than 500 m, the Biases of the GPT3 + Saastamoinen, GPT3 + Hopfield and UNB3m models were 3.46 cm, 3.59 cm and 4.54 cm, respectively. At more than 500 m, the Biases of the three models were within 4 cm. In different seasons, the Bias of the ZTD estimated by the UNB3m model had obvious global seasonal variation. The GPT3 + Saastamoinen model and the GPT3 + Hopfield model were more stable, and the values were within 5 cm. The research results can provide a useful reference for the ZTD correction accuracy and applicability of GNSS navigation and positioning at different latitudes, at different heights and in different seasons. Abstract

This paper focuses on events linked to controlled underwater explosions of World War 2 (WW2) ordnances which were included in the Reviewed Event Bulletin (REB). Data used for the study were provided by seismic stations of the International Monitoring System (IMS) in 2020. Examined events were triggered by devices of different charge size and took place in several locations in Europe. There were also other, previously detected WW2 ordnance underwater explosions which could be compared to events in 2020. It is shown that these relatively small underwater explosions listed in the REB, with good coupling to the ground, are located by the IMS network within 20 km from the ground truth. Charge size of explosive material was related to event magnitude. Results were compared to magnitudes published for underwater explosions of larger sizes. The conclusion is that an in-water explosion will result in seismic waves with amplitudes equivalent to the amplitudes of seismic waves from an in-ground explosion with 17.2 times the yield in kT. Abstract

Tropopause folds are the key process underlying stratosphere-to-troposphere transport (STT) of ozone, and thus they affect tropospheric ozone levels and variability. In the present study we perform a process-oriented evaluation of Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) reanalysis (CAMSRA) O 3 during folding events over Europe and for the time period from 2003 to 2018. A 3-D labeling algorithm is applied to detect tropopause folds in CAMSRA, while ozonesonde data from WOUDC (World Ozone and Ultraviolet Radiation Data Centre) and aircraft measurements from IAGOS (In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System) are used for CAMSRA O 3 evaluation. The profiles of observed and CAMSRA O 3 concentrations indicate that CAMSRA reproduces the observed O 3 increases in the troposphere during the examined folding events. Nevertheless, at most of the examined sites, CAMSRA overestimates the observed O 3 concentrations, mostly at the upper portion of the observed increases, with a median fractional gross error (FGE) among the examined sites >0.2 above 400 hPa. The use of a control run without data assimilation reveals that the aforementioned overestimation of CAMSRA O 3 arises from the data assimilation implementation. Overall, although data assimilation assists CAMSRA O 3 to follow the observed O 3 enhancements in the troposphere during the STT events, it introduces biases in the upper troposphere resulting in no clear quantitative improvement compared to the control run without data assimilation. Less biased assimilated O 3 products, with finer vertical resolution in the troposphere, in addition to higher IFS (Integrated Forecasting System) vertical resolution, are expected to provide a better representation of O 3 variability during tropopause folds. Abstract

The potent oral inhibitor of BCL2, venetoclax (VEN), used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, has been approved in US for the treatment of naïve patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) unfit for intensive chemotherapy and recently in Europe, too. However, the drug has been used for years in combination with hypomethylating agents (HMAs) in patients not eligible to other treatment option, according to the so-called off-label use. We collected real-world data about patients treated with VEN + HMAs in the context of a pharmacovigilance project focused on the evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of drugs used for unapproved indication in Italian hospitals. From March to December 2020, 24 patients started treatment with VEN combined with HMAs. 21 patients have been assessed for response. Eleven (52%) patients reached complete remission (CR), and three patients (14%) CR with partial hematological recovery (CRh), with a median duration of response of 4.5 months (range 0.5–12.5). 19 patients experienced at least 1 adverse drug reaction (ADR), mostly serious, including 3 deaths (9% of ADRs; 12.5% of patients) in febrile neutropenia. Hematological toxicities and infections (cytopenia, neutropenia, febrile neutropenia, sepsis), were the most reported ADRs (84.4%). In general, neutropenic fever occurred more frequently in patients treated with decitabine (7 out of 9, 78%) compared to azacitidine (5 out of 15, 33%; p = 0.03), whereas response assessment did not differ based on used HMA (p = 0.1). These results confirm the benefit-risk profile of VEN in a real-world setting of patients with no adequate therapeutic options. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
