China has experienced rapid agricultural development over recent decades, accompanied by increased fertilizer consumption in croplands; yet, the trend and drivers of the associated nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions remain uncertain. The primary sources of this uncertainty are the coarse spatial variation of activity data and the incomplete model representation of N2O emissions in response to agricultural management. Here, we provide new data‐driven estimates of cropland‐N2O emissions across China in 1990–2014, compiled using a global cropland‐N2O flux observation dataset, nationwide survey‐based reconstruction of N‐fertilization and irrigation, and an updated nonlinear model. In addition, we have evaluated the drivers behind changing cropland‐N2O patterns using an index decomposition analysis approach. We find that China's annual cropland‐N2O emissions increased on average by 11.2 Gg N/year2 (p < .001) from 1990 to 2003, after which emissions plateaued until 2014 (2.8 Gg N/year2, p = .02), consistent with the output from an ensemble of process‐based terrestrial biosphere models. The slowdown of the increase in cropland‐N2O emissions after 2003 was pervasive across two thirds of China's sowing areas. This change was mainly driven by the nationwide reduction in N‐fertilizer applied per area, partially due to the prevalence of nationwide technological adoptions. This reduction has almost offset the N2O emissions induced by policy‐driven expansion of sowing areas, particularly in the Northeast Plain and the lower Yangtze River Basin. Our results underline the importance of high‐resolution activity data and adoption of nonlinear model of N2O emission for capturing cropland‐N2O emission changes. Continuous cropping of soybean causes soil degradation and decreased soybean yield in Northeast PR China. However, the mechanism underlying the effect on soil fungal communities and the relationship between these effects and cropping systems have not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, we comparatively investigated the abundance, diversity, and structures of fungal communities in the bulk and rhizospheric soils of soybean grown in two cropping systems, that is, continuous cropping (CC) of soybean and cropping rotation (CR) with maize using real‐time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Illumina MiSeq sequencing methods. The results showed that the rhizospheric soil fungal abundance was significantly higher in CC than in CR, but the opposite trend was observed in bulk soils. CC decreased the fungal alpha diversity in both bulk and rhizospheric soils compared with CR. The fungal community compositions were distinctly different between CC and CR in both bulk and rhizospheric soils, and the composition and diversity in bulk soils were predominantly affected by the soil carbon to nitrigen (C/N) ratio. The soil fungal functional groups varied between the two cropping systems; CC increased the relative abundances of the potentially pathogenic fungi Fusarium oxysporum and Lectera longa and beneficial fungi Mortierella sp. and Paecilomyces lilacinus. In contrast, CR increased the relative abundance of Ustilago maydis, which is a pathogen that causes corn smut. Our findings showed that CC increased the abundances of plant pathogens, which is harmful to soybean growth; in contrast, the abundances of some beneficial fungi also increased, which suggested that suppressive soils might be developed after long‐term CC. Historical thematic maps and remote sensing data were applied to address spatiotemporal dynamics of land use/land cover (LULC) changes and its impact on wetlands sustainability based on eight LULC datasets from 1954 to 2015 in Baoqing County, Northeast China. This study demonstrated that LULC drastically changed in the past six decades due to conversion of wetlands, woodland, and grassland into cropland. The cropland was 578.8 km2 in 1954, accounting for 5.8% of the area in Baoqing County, and it increased to 54.3% in 2015, which was nearly equivalent to 9.4 times of that in 1954. Cropland increased 4843.6 km2 from 1954 to 2015 with average increased area of 79.4 km2/yr. The conversion of wetlands was the main reason for cropland increase (49.7%), and woodland (18%) and grassland (16.3%) conversion were other reasons. Results also revealed that 78% of wetlands were lost during the past six decades, of which 91.2% were converted cropland. Population increasing (population across Baoqing in 2015 was 7.8 times of that in 1949), agricultural technology development was the main reason for cropland increase, institutional and economic policies also played important roles for cropland dynamics, particularly paddy field influenced by market price. Agricultural development has caused severe wetlands degradation both in area and functionality, and still being the major threads for wetlands sustainable development. Several suggestions concerning the future land use policy formulation and wetlands sustainability were proposed. They are adjusting the 'food first' agricultural policy, reinforce management for wetlands nature reserves, creating infrastructure for the rational use of surface and groundwater, harnessing the degraded cultivated land. This study examines potential benefits of performance‐based multi‐model ensembles (MMEs) in projecting the impacts of climate change on extreme precipitation indices over East Asia (EA) using the data from 19 GCMs in the coupled model intercomparison project 5 (CMIP5). The Taylor skill score is adopted as the measure of the model skills in simulating the spatial and interannual variability of the selected extreme precipitation indices over four EA regions. The overall rank based on the total skill score (TSC) is used to construct two skill‐based MMEs, MME of high‐skill, MMH (MME of low‐skill, MML) that include the top (bottom) seven models, in addition to the simple ensemble of all 19 GCMs (ENS). Inter‐GCM consistency is measured using the signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR). In the present‐day period, MMH yields higher skill scores than MML and ENS for almost all extreme precipitation indices as well as regions. Regional variations in biases, inter‐model consistency, and TSC are large. The inter‐model consistency is highest for Northern China and Manchuria and is lowest for Southern China. The most notable differences in the key properties of climate change signals from the three MMEs among the three ensembles are that the climate change signals from MMH and ENS exceed the 90% significance level in much larger areas than those from MML. However, the differences in the climate change signals between MMH and MML are generally below the 90% significance level. The SNR of the projected climate change signals shows that MMH yields more consistent climate change signals than ENS/MML. Both the SNR differences and the area in which statistical significance exceed the 90% level suggest that constructing climate change signals from a group of higher‐skill models may yield more reliable projections than constructing MMEs from the entire models or a group of lower‐skilled models. This study examines the synoptic impacts of wintertime extratropical cyclones on northeastern China. The 181 analyzed cyclones mainly originate from eastern Mongolia and dissipate over the North Pacific Ocean. Precursor negative geopotential height anomalies for these cyclones emerge over continental areas near the Barents and Kara Seas. Baroclinic instability and midlatitude westerly winds are the dominant factors driving the development and movement of these cyclones from their precursor signals. Owing to the southeastward migration of the cyclones, temperature over northeastern China first increases and then decreases, resulting in a significant increase in the frequency of extreme weather. These cyclones contribute about 70.6% of the extreme precipitation days over northeastern China. Relative moisture contributions from the East China Sea, the Sea of Japan, and East Asia are all anomalously large during cyclones associated with extreme precipitation days, with moisture from these regions entering northeastern China mainly through its southern and western boundaries. Temperature variations over northeastern China play a critical role in the accumulation of moisture for extreme precipitation and the timing of that precipitation. Moisture transport initially contributes to an increase in precipitable water due to warm temperature anomalies. The added precipitable water is then released as extreme precipitation when the atmosphere over northeastern China starts to cool. Histories of wartime Japan often focus on the Japanese home islands after Japan's surrender to Allied forces on 15 August 1945. Japanese citizens living in Korea, Manchuria, and elsewhere in the far-flung Japanese Empire are usually left out of the historiographical record. In a new book about the evacuees—hikiagesha—from the defunct Empire, Shimokawa Masaharu presents a vivid, harrowing portrait of the suffering of those who had to make their way back to Japan after the end of the Greater East Asia War. To study the land surface and atmospheric meteorological characteristics of non-uniform underlying surfaces in the semi-arid area of Northeast China, we use a “High-Resolution Assimilation Dataset of the water-energy cycle in China (HRADC)”. The grid points of three different underlying surfaces were selected, and their meteorological elements were averaged for each type (i.e., mixed forest, grassland, and cropland). For 2009, we compared and analyzed the different components of leaf area index (LAI), soil temperature and moisture, surface albedo, precipitation, and surface energy for various underlying surfaces in Northeast China. The results indicated that the LAI of mixed forest and cropland during the summer is greater than 5 m2 m−2 and below 2.5 m2 m−2 for grassland; in the winter and spring seasons, the Green Vegetation Fraction (GVF) is below 30%. The soil temperature and moisture both vary greatly. Throughout the year, the mixed forest is dominated by latent heat evaporation; in grasslands and croplands, the sensible heat flux and the latent heat flux are approximately equal, and the GVF contributed more to latent heat flux than sensible heat flux in the summer. This study compares meteorological characteristics between three different underlying surfaces of the semi-arid area of Northeast China and makes up for the insufficiency of purely using observations for the study. In this study, the characteristics, probable source, and potential carcinogenic risk of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water of the Liaohe River were investigated. Twelve sampling points were selected, and water samples were collected in both dry and flood periods of 2011. Sample analysis indicated that the concentration of total PAHs varied from 840.50 ng/L to 4274.73 ng/L in the flood period, and from 387.76 ng/L to 1997.83 ng/L in the dry period. The representative PAHs in the flood period were benz[a]anthracene (Baa), naphthalene (Nap), and chrysene (Chr), whereas Phenanthrene (Phe), fluoranthene (Flu), and pyrene (Pyr) were the representative PAHs in the dry period. The compositional pattern of PAHs indicated that four-ring PAHs were predominant in the flood period, whereas three-ring and four-ring PAHs dominated in the dry period. The different PAH congener ratios indicated that PAHs in surface water of the Liaohe River mainly originated from a mixed source in the flood period, and from combustion in the dry period. Based on the methods of Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) and the benzo[a]pyrene toxic equivalent (TEQ), the potential cancer risk was quantitatively assessed, and the results suggested that there was a potential cancer risk in surface water of the Liaohe River and more attentions must be paid to the PAHs contamination. Abstract: In this study, new geochemical, zircon U–Pb, and Lu–Hf isotopic data are presented for volcanics from the Hadataolegai Formation of the central Great Xing'an Range (GXR) in Northeast China. These new data offer insights into the petrogenesis of the volcanics of the Hadataolegai Formation and the tectonic evolution of the Paleo–Asian Ocean (PAO) and Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean (MOO). These volcanics of the Hadataolegai Formation are divided into andesite‐trachyandesites and dacite‐trachydacites. Zircon U–Pb ages show that the volcanics of the Hadataolegai Formation erupted between 230 Ma and 228 Ma during the Late Triassic, which agrees with recently obtained data. The volcanic rocks in this study have low Y (9.9–21.1 ppm) and Yb (0.78–2.02 ppm) contents, high Sr (444–954 ppm) contents, and slight Eu anomalies (δEu = 0.82 to 0.94), similar to ‘adakite‐like’ rocks. The dacites were formed by fractional crystallization of coeval andesitic magmas. The zircons within the andesite and trachyandesite yield higher positive εHf(t) values (+6.3 to +12.0) and model ages (TDM2) between 860 Ma and 453 Ma, which indicates that the magmas were generated by a newly accreted continental crustal source. Moreover, some of the volcanics are relatively high in MgO contents. These characteristics indicate that the volcanic magmas were derived from the partial melting of delaminated lower crust and mixing with mantle materials. Combining these data with previous studies, we suggest that the magmatism in the central GXR was governed by extension due to the closure of the PAO and the back‐arc extension associated with the southward subduction of the MOO plate (western GXR, near the Erguna Block). Between the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) and the Mukden Incident (1931), Japan’s mounting colonial presence manifested itself in the activities of the South Manchuria Railway Company as well as in the Japanese forces’ skirmishes for control of the region. The poet Kitagawa Fuyuhiko (1900-1990) would draw on his memories of Manchuria, where he lived until attending college in Kyoto, to situate hyperobjects and colonial minutiae in counter-hegemonic anticolonial and antiwar prose poems. His subtractive poetic configurations - not Surrealist but certainly building on Dada precedents - isolate incongruous elements (evental traces) in Alain Badiou’s sense of being faithful to a critique of the ethics of a colonial apparatus. Having grown up within the colonial enterprise himself, and subject to high-minded Japanese media representations and instilled imperial affects, Kitagawa positions himself against the machinic drive for colonial profits and the abuse of labour and prostitutes. This article thus situates aesthetic strategies for displacing imperial affect as projected onto spaces of Japanese expansion so as to document radically anticolonial subject possibilities among Japanese nationals themselves. As postcolonial artefacts, these prose poems suggest the contradictions of European modernity writ in the Japanese rhetoric of cosmopolitan East Asian development and liberation as cultural production that aestheticises colonial extraction of labour and raw materials. The article presents the abstract of the paper "Amelioration of Saline-Sodic Soil With Mildly Saline Water in the Songnen Plain, Northeast China," by Q. S. Li, L. S. Willardson, L. X. Li, C. J. Liu and L. Z. Wu, which was published in the December 2004 issue of the periodical "Soil Use and Management." Shallow, mildly saline groundwater to irrigate sorghum-corn rotations in a two-year field experiment was used to evaluate amelioration. Improvements in soil physical properties resulted from the application of leaching water and some supplemental irrigation water after two growing seasons. There was an increase in crop yields produced on plots undergoing amelioration compared with the rainfed control.

Global warming has caused unevenly distributed changes in precipitation and evapotranspiration, which has and will certainly impact on the wet-dry variations. Based on daily meteorological data collected at 91 weather stations in Northeast China (NEC), the spatiotemporal characteristics of dry and wet climatic variables (precipitation, crop reference evapotranspiration (ET0), and humid index (HI)) are analyzed, and the probable reasons causing the changes in these variables are discussed during the period of 1961-2014. Precipitation showed non-significant trend over the period of 1961-2014, while ET0 showed a significant decreasing trend, which led to climate wetting in NEC. The period of 2001-2012 exhibited smaller semiarid area and larger humid area compared to the period of 1961-1980, indicating NEC has experienced wetting process at decadal scale. ET0 was most sensitive to relative humidity, and wind speed was the second most sensitive variable. Sunshine hours and temperature were found to be less influential to ET0 in the study area. The changes in wind speed in the recent 54 years have caused the greatest influence on ET0, followed by temperature. For each month, wind speed was the most significant variable causing ET0 reduction in all months except July. Temperature, as a dominant factor, made a positive contribution to ET0 in February and March, as well as sunshine hours in June and July, and relative humidity in August and September. In summary, NEC has experienced noticeable climate wetting due to the significantly decreasing ET0, and the decrease in wind speed was the biggest contributor for the ET0 reduction. Although agricultural drought crisis is expected to be partly alleviated, regional water resources management and planning in Northeast China should consider the potential water shortage and water conflict in the future because of spatiotemporal dry-wet variations in NEC. This study used spectrometry to determine the spectral absorption of five types of mafic-ultramafic rocks from the Kaishantun ophiolite suite in Northeast China. Absorption peak wavelengths were determined for peridotite, diabase, basalt, pyroxenite, and gabbro. Glaucophane, actinolite, zoisite, and epidote absorption peaks were also measured, and these were used to distinguish such minerals from other associated minerals in ophiolite suite samples. Combined with their chemical compositions, the blueschist facies (glaucophane + epidote + chlorite) and greenschist facies (actinolite + epidote + chlorite) mineral assemblage was distinct based on its spectral signature. Based on the regional tectonic setting, the Kaishantun ophiolite suite probably experienced the blueschist facies metamorphic peak during subduction and greenschist facies retrograde metamorphism during later slab rollback. Although numerous satellite-based soil moisture (SM) products can provide spatiotemporally continuous worldwide datasets, they can hardly be employed in characterizing fine-grained regional land surface processes, owing to their coarse spatial resolution. In this study, we proposed a machine-learning-based method to enhance SM spatial accuracy and improve the availability of SM data. Four machine learning algorithms, including classification and regression trees (CART), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), Bayesian (BAYE), and random forests (RF), were implemented to downscale the monthly European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI) SM product from 25-km to 1-km spatial resolution. During the regression, the land surface temperature (including daytime temperature, nighttime temperature, and diurnal fluctuation temperature), normalized difference vegetation index, surface reflections (red band, blue band, NIR band and MIR band), and digital elevation model were taken as explanatory variables to produce fine spatial resolution SM. We chose Northeast China as the study area and acquired corresponding SM data from 2003 to 2012 in unfrozen seasons. The reconstructed SM datasets were validated against in-situ measurements. The results showed that the RF-downscaled results had superior matching performance to both ESA CCI SM and in-situ measurements, and can positively respond to precipitation variation. Additionally, the RF was less affected by parameters, which revealed its robustness. Both CART and KNN ranked second. Compared to KNN, CART had a relatively close correlation with the validation data, but KNN showed preferable precision. Moreover, BAYE ranked last with significantly abnormal regression values. An accurate gridded climatological temperature data-set can be a reliable basis for studying the issues that concern climate change, natural disasters, among others. In this study, the climate standard value data and annual observed data collected by 104 meteorological sites in Northeast China from 1971 to 2000 are used to interpolate the annual mean air temperature of the region with different spatial interpolation techniques. Efforts have also been made to verify the accuracy of the results generated by each interpolation method with error indicator, temperature characteristic value and temperature variation curves. The results show at the spatial scale, the partial thin-plate smoothing spline (PTPSS) scheme generates the most desirable temperature interpolations with a root-mean-square error at 0.34 °C and an average standard error at 0.52 °C. At the temporal scale, the PTPSS-based 1971–2000 temperature curves agree the best with the gridded temperature curves, with the correlation coefficients of means, minimums and maximums between the two being larger than 0.9. Meanwhile, the PTPSS produce the smallest error approaching zero among all the interpolation schemes tested in the study. In this context, the PTPSS scheme stands out as the most desirable interpolation method for the annual mean temperature in Northeast China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new family of insects is described from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation in western Liaoning Province, China. Experiments were conducted to study the inhibitor factors present in suppressive soil that suppressed the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) in the black soil fields with 21 years continuous cropping of soybean (SSSS) and 3 years continuous cropping of soybean followed by 1 year corn (SSSC). Compared with the SSSC field, the densities of SCN significantly (P < 0.05) declined in SSSS field. In a soil microcosm with suppressive soil, the population of SCN decreased after the addition of pimaricin (fungal inhibitor) and streptomycin (bacterial inhibitor), but the population of SCN declined more significantly by adding streptomycin to the suppressive soil than adding pimaricin.Fusarium equiseti,Pochonia chlamydosporiaandPurpureocillium lilacinumwere isolated from cysts, eggs and J2 of SCN and soil in SSSS and SSC field. The population density of these parasitic fungi was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in SSSS field than in SSSC field. The density ofP. chlamydosporiawas higher than other fungi. Real-time PCR was used to test genomic DNA ofP. chlamydosporiain SSSS and SSC field soil. The mass of genomic DNA and the population density ofP. chlamydosporiawere significantly (P < 0.05) higher in SSSS field than in SSSC field. In many areas of rural China, pig feasts have long functioned as a vital ritual exchange among codependent farm households. Called sha nian zhu (roughly translated as "killing the year's pig"), the annual reciprocal feast has traditionally served to maintain community identities, provide aid, and strengthen social ties. Based on interviews with farmhouseholds in ZhenlaiCounty in northern Jilin Province, we study the benefits that the annual pig feast provides communities. While some farmers believe this tradition will endure indefinitely, trends of urbanization and privatization--e.g., the peri-urban encroachment and confiscation of village land, the temporary and permanent migration of rural villagers to cities, the industrialization of pig production, and the year-round availability of meat--could lead to the transformation and marketization, or even abandonment, of this ancestral tradition. Xing’an larch, a deciduous coniferous species, is the zonal tree of the Greater Xing’an Mountains in Northeast China. In May 1987, a catastrophic fire broke out in the mountains and burned 1.3 million hectares of forests in 26 days. While studies have shown that forest greenness has come back to normal in certain years, the re-composition of this zonal species has not been studied after the 1987 fire. With a series of Landsat 8 OLI images acquired in 2013–2015, this study builds the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Green Vegetation Index (GVI) time series in a complete growing cycle. A decision tree is developed to classify tree species with an overall accuracy of 86.16% and Kappa coefficient of 0.80. The re-composition of Xing’an larch after the 1987 fire is extracted, and its variations in areas under different fire intensities are statistically analyzed. Results show that Xing’an larch comprises 17.52%, 26.20% and 33.19% of forests in burned areas with high, medium and low fire intensities, respectively. Even around 30 years after the 1987 fire, the composition of this zonal species in boreal forest has not been fully recovered in the Greater Xing’an Mountains. Air temperature (Tair) near the ground surface is a fundamental descriptor of terrestrial environment conditions and one of the most widely used climatic variables in global change studies. The main objective of this study was to explore the possibility of retrieving high-resolution Tair from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST) products, covering complex terrain in Northeast China. The All Subsets Regression (ASR) method was adopted to select the predictors and build optimal multiple linear regression models for estimating maximum (Tmax), minimum (Tmin), and mean (Tmean) air temperatures. The relative importance of predictors in these models was evaluated via the Standardized Regression Coefficients (SRCs) method. The results indicated that the optimal models could estimate the Tmax, Tmin, and Tmean with relatively high accuracies (Model Efficiency ≥ 0.90). Both LST and day length (DL) predictors were important in estimating Tmax (SRCs: daytime LST = 0.53, DL = 0.35), Tmin (SRCs: nighttime LST = 0.74, DL = 0.23), and Tmean (SRCs: nighttime LST = 0.72, DL = 0.28). Models predicting Tmin and Tmean had better performance than the one predicting Tmax. Nighttime LST was better at predicting Tmin and Tmean than daytime LST data at predicting Tmax. Land covers had noticeable influences on estimating Tair, and even seasonal vegetation greening could result in temporal variations of model performance. Air temperature could be accurately estimated using remote sensing, but the model performance was varied across different spatial and temporal scales. Northeast China is located in a high latitude area of the world and undergoes a cold season that lasts six months each year. Recently, regional haze episodes with high concentrations of fine particles (PM2.5) have frequently been occurring in Northeast China during the heating period, but little information has been available. Aerosol particles were collected in winter at a site in a suburban county town (T1) and a site in a background rural area (T2). Morphology, size, elemental composition, and mixing state of individual aerosol particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Aerosol particles were mainly composed of organic matter (OM) and S-rich and certain amounts of soot and K-rich. OM represented the most abundant particles, accounting for 60.7% and 53.5% at the T1 and T2 sites, respectively. Abundant spherical OM particles were likely emitted directly from coal-burning stoves. Soot decreased from 16.9% at the T1 site to 4.6% at the T2 site and sulfate particles decrease from 35.9% at the T2 site to 15.7% at the T1 site, suggesting that long-range transport air masses experienced more aging processes and produced more secondary particles. Sprites are brief optical emissions occurring above thunderstorms. Features of sprites and their parent thunderstorms and lightning activities have been studied by many researchers. Here, we report a single sprite recorded over a mesoscale convective system during its life cycle in Northeast China. The results show that the sprite might have been a dancing one, with a 20 km horizontal displacement from its parent cloud-to-ground flash (CG) and a 38 ms time delay; all the sprite elements occurred during the continuing current process of the parent flash. The peak current of the parent CG was the largest during the almost one-hour time window containing the sprite, and the absolute values of all the negative flashes were smaller than 100 kA during the same time period and did not produce sprite. The sprite did not occur during the time period in which the maximum area of the thunderstorm reached. The occurrence of sprite corresponded well with the decay of the thunderstorm convection, and no significant relationship between the occurrence of sprite and the increase in the 30-35 dBZ and 35-40 dBZ interval was found. We present zircon U–Pb dating, whole-rock geochemistry, and Sr–Nd isotope results for the Upper Permian–Upper Triassic volcanic rocks to constrain the timing of the final closure of the eastern segment of the Palaeo-Asian Ocean. The volcanic rocks were mainly collected from the Yanbian area in eastern Jilin Province, northeastern China. The zircon U–Pb dating results indicate that the samples can be classified as Upper Permian–Lower Triassic basalts (ca. 262–244 Ma) and Upper Triassic dacites (ca. 216 Ma). The whole-rock geochemical results indicate that the rocks predominately belong to the medium-K and high-K calc-alkaline series. The basalts are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs, e.g. Ba and K) and depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs, e.g. Nb and Ta), with weak positive Eu anomalies. The dacites are enriched in LILEs (e.g. Rb, Ba, Th, and K) and light rare earth elements (LREEs) and marked depletion in some HFSEs (e.g. Nb, Ta, and Ti), with significant negative Sr, P, and Eu anomalies. Moreover, the Upper Permian–Lower Triassic basalts have low initial87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7037–0.7048) and highεNdvalues (4.4–5.4). In contrast, the Upper Triassic dacites possess relatively high initial87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7052) compared with their lowεNdvalues (1.4). The basaltic magma likely originated from the partial melting of a depleted mantle wedge metasomatized by subduction-related fluids, and the felsic magmas likely originated from the partial melting of a dominantly juvenile source with a minor component of ancient crust. Taken together, the Upper Permian–Lower Triassic basalts (ca. 262–244 Ma) are arc basalts that formed in an active continental margin setting, and the Upper Triassic dacites (ca. 216 Ma) are A-type granitic rocks that formed in an extensional setting. This study investigated the aquatic habitats on typical low hills in the Yitong River in Northeast China by applying the River Habitat Survey (RHS) method. The status of river habitats was evaluated on the basis of Habitat Quality Assessment (HQA) and Habitat Modification Score (HMS). The quality of habitats and the spatial distribution pattern of human disturbances were also analyzed. Results demonstrated that the HQA of 51 sites was between 24 and 66. On the basis of HMS, we found that 7.8% of the reaches are kept natural and 19.5%, 41.2%, 27.5%, and 3.9% of the reaches suffer from slight destruction, distinct degradation, serious degradation, and serious damage, respectively. HQA also exhibited a significantly negative correlation with HMS. HQAs did not evidently differ among upstream, midstream, and downstream habitats along the Yitong River. By contrast, HMS varied significantly. The upstream and midstream habitats were mainly influenced by water conservation structures. The downstream habitat was mainly affected by intensive land development for agricultural and construction purposes and by hydraulic structure construction in river embankments, discharge pipe installation, and bridge construction. Due to high intensity agricultural exploitation since the middle of the 20th century, farmland gullies have become a pervasive form of water erosion in Northeast China. Yet few researches are concentrated on how topography and land use affect long-term gully development in this region. In this study, gully distribution in a village with an area of 24.2 km in the central Mollisols area of Northeast China in different times were compared by Aerial photography (1968), Quickbird image (2009) and field survey, and factors affecting gully development including land use and topography were analyzed. The results showed that the total gully number decreased from 104 to 69, while occupying area rose from 34.8 ha to 78.4 ha from 1968 to 2009. Fundamental gully distribution had been formed by 1968 as most of 2009′s gullies were evolved from 1968′s gullies′ merge and width expansion process, and new gullies those initiated after 1968 occupied only 7% of total gully area in 2009. Gully area increasing ratio in grassland was the highest and that in forestland was the lowest. The threshold catchment area between simple and complex gully development was around 15 ha to 25 ha. This threshold value sets apart catchment areas that will develop simple or complex gullies in areas with similar environmental conditions. This study develops a new variance-based uncertainty assessment framework to investigate the individual and combined impacts of various uncertainty sources on future extreme floods. The Long Ashton Research Station Weather Generator (LARS-WG) approach is used to downscale multiple general circulation models (GCMs), and the dynamically dimensioned search approximation of uncertainty approach is used to quantify hydrological model uncertainty. Extreme floods in a region in northeastern China are studied for two future periods: near term (2046-65) and far term (2080-99). Six GCMs and three emission scenarios (A1B, A2, and Bl) are used. Results obtained from this case study show that the 500-yr flood magnitude could increase by 4.5% in 2046-65 and by 6.4% in 2080-99 in terms of median values; in worst-case scenarios, it could increase by 63.0% and 111.8% in 2046-65 and 2080-99, respectively. It is found that the combined effect of GCMs, emission scenarios, and hydrological models has a larger influence on the discharge uncertainties than the individual impacts from emission scenarios and hydrological models. Further, results show GCMs are the dominant contributor to extreme flood uncertainty in both 2046-65 and 2080-99 periods. This study demonstrates that the developed framework can be used to effectively investigate changes in the occurrence of extreme floods in the future and to quantify individual and combined contributions of various uncertainty sources to extreme flood uncertainty, which can guide future efforts to reduce uncertainty. We obtain high-resolution Rayleigh and Love wave phase velocity maps from ambient noise tomography using data recorded by NECESSArray in Northeast China. The resulting radial anisotropic model from the joint inversion of Rayleigh and Lovewave dispersion curves reveals strong relationship between the crustal radial anisotropy and tectonic provinces, that is, strong positive anisotropy (Vsh > Vsv) beneath the Songliao Basin and weak radial anisotropy beneath the Xinmeng Belt and Changbaishan Region. The Songliao Basin experienced widespread crustal extension during the late Mesozoic. We interpret the lower crustal anisotropy beneath the Songliao Basin as a result of ductile deformation during the rifting stage, which may lead to the alignment of anisotropic minerals and the observed strong radial anisotropy at present. In the northern Songliao Basin, where thick syn-rift and post-rift sediments (=4 km) are believed to be present, we observe a broader lateral distribution of anisotropy with stronger amplitude compared with the southern basin. We suggest that the broader distribution of crustal radial anisotropy in the northern basin could be the consequence of outward lower crustal flow driven by the sedimentary loading during the post-rift stage, which is also proposed by previous numerical modeling. Seismology plays an important role in characterizing potential underground nuclear tests. Using broad-band digital seismic data from Northeast China, South Korea and Japan, we investigated the properties of the recent seismic event occurred in North Korea on 2016 January 6. Using a relative location method and choosing the previous 2006 explosion as the master event, the 2016 event was located within the North Korean nuclear test site, with its epicentre at latitude 41.3003°N and longitude 129.0678°E, approximately 900 m north and 500mwest of the previous event on 2013 February 12. Based on the error ellipse, the relocation uncertainty was approximately 70 m. Using the P/S spectral ratios, including Pg/Lg, Pn/Lg and Pn/Sn, as the discriminants, we identify the 2016 event as an explosion rather than an earthquake. The body-wave magnitude calculated from regional wave Lg is mb(Lg) equal to 4.7 ± 0.2. Adopting an empirical magnitude-yield relation, and assuming that the explosion is fully coupled and detonated at a normally scaled depth, we find that the seismic yield is about 4 kt, with the uncertainties allowing a range from 2 to 8 kt. Yamatochaitophorus yichunensis sp. n. is described from specimens collected in northeast China on Acer tegmentosum (Aceraceae). Yamatochaitophorus is also a new generic record for China. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the phospholipase A2 (PLA2), group XIIA gene (PLA2G12A) and schizophrenia. Methods: This study included 1,063 schizophrenia patients and 1,103 healthy controls from a Han Chinese Population in Northeast China. Four tagSNPs (rs11728699 in intron 1, synonymous rs2285714 in exon 3, rs3087494 in the 3’ UTR, and rs7694620 in the downstream region) in PLA2G12A were selected, and they were genotyped by the MALDI-TOF-MS technology. The Chi-square (χ2) test and haplotype analysis were performed to analyze the association of PLA2G12A SNPs and schizophrenia using the software packages SPSS 16.0 and Haploview 4.2. Results: Among the four tagSNPs, only SNP rs3087494 in the 3’ UTR of PLA2G12A showed significant differences in both allele frequencies (χ2 = 20.136, P<0.001) compared to healthy controls. The minor allele G of SNP rs3087494 is potentially a predictive factor for schizophrenia (OR = 0.753, 95% CI: 0.665–0.882). The frequency distribution of haplotypes consisting of specific alleles of two SNPs (rs7694620-rs3087494 or rs3087494-rs2285714), three SNPs (rs7694620-rs3087494-rs2285714 or rs3087494-rs2285714-rs11728699), or all four SNPs (rs7694620-rs3087494-rs2285714-rs11728699) was significantly different between schizophrenia patients and control subjects (P<0.001). The Sanjiang Plain has been experienced significant wetland loss due to expanded agricultural activities, and will be potentially restored by the China National Wetland Conservation Action Plan (NWCP) in future. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of future climate warming and wetland restoration on wetland CH4 emissions in northeast China. We used an atmosphere-vegetation interaction model (AVIM2) to drive a modified biogeophysical model (CH4MODwetland), and projected CH4 flux variations from the Sanjiang Plain wetlands under different Representative Concentration Pathway scenarios throughout the 21st century. Model validation showed that the regressions between the observed and simulated CH4 fluxes by the modified model produced an R2 of 0.49 with a slope of 0.87 (p<0.001, n = 237). According to the AVIM2 simulation, the net primary productivity of the Sanjiang Plain wetlands will increase by 38.2 g m-2 yr-1, 116.6 g m-2 yr-1 and 250.4 g m-2 yr-1 under RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, respectively, by the end of this century. For RCP 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios, the CH4 fluxes will increase by 5.7 g m-2 yr-1, 57.5 g m-2 yr-1 and 112.2 g m-2 yr-1. Combined with the wetland restoration, the regional emissions will increase by 0.18‒1.52 Tg. The CH4 emissions will be stimulated by climate change and wetland restoration. Background: In a continuous spring maize system in Northeast China, the accumulation and succession characteristics of nitrate in Mollisol with four fertilization treatments, including no fertilization (CK), farmers' conventional fertilization (FC), recommendation fertilization (RF), and controlled release fertilizer application (CRF), were compared over a 6-year field plot trial. Results: On average, the RF and CRF treatments decreased nitrate nitrogen by 16.6 and 39.5 % in the 0-90 cm soil layer, respectively, and maintained a relatively high maize grain yield, as compared to the FC treatment. The accumulation of nitrate nitrogen was more obvious in the CRF treatment compared with the other fertilizer treatments under the arid climate. However, the high precipitation resulted in the leaching of nitrate nitrogen into the deeper soil layer in all the fertilizer treatments. The maximum of nitrate nitrogen in the 0-90 cm soil layer was 81.4 kg N/ha at a nitrogen fertilizer rate of 250 kg N/ha in the long-term trial, which was within the rational and safe level for groundwater. Over the past century, the endangered Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) has experienced a severe contraction in demography and geographic range because of habitat loss, poaching, and prey depletion. In its historical home in Northeast China, there appears to be a single tiger population that includes tigers in Southwest Primorye and Northeast China; however, the current demographic status of this population is uncertain. Information on the abundance, distribution and genetic diversity of this population for assessing the efficacy of conservation interventions are scarce. We used noninvasive genetic detection data from scats, capture-recapture models and an accumulation curve method to estimate the abundance of Amur tigers in Northeast China. We identified 11 individual tigers (6 females and 5 males) using 10 microsatellite loci in three nature reserves between April 2013 and May 2015. These tigers are confined primarily to a Hunchun Nature Reserve along the border with Russia, with an estimated population abundance of 9–11 tigers during the winter of 2014–2015. They showed a low level of genetic diversity. The mean number of alleles per locus was 2.60 and expected and observed heterozygosity were 0.42 and 0.49, respectively. We also documented long-distance dispersal (~270 km) of a male Amur tiger to Huangnihe Nature Reserve from the border, suggesting that the expansion of neighboring Russian populations may eventually help sustain Chinese populations. However, the small and isolated population recorded by this study demonstrate that there is an urgent need for more intensive regional management to create a tiger-permeable landscape and increased genetic connectivity with other populations. Flooding regime changes resulting from natural and human activity have been projected to affect wetland plant community structures and functions. It is therefore important to conduct investigations across a range of flooding gradients to assess the impact of flooding depth on wetland vegetation. We conducted this study to identify the pattern of plant height, species richness and aboveground biomass variation along the flooding gradient in floodplain wetlands located in Northeast China. We found that the response of dominant species height to the flooding gradient depends on specific species, i.e., a quadratic response for Carex lasiocarpa, a negative correlation for Calamagrostis angustifolia, and no response for Carex appendiculata. Species richness showed an intermediate effect along the vegetation zone from marsh to wet meadow while aboveground biomass increased. When the communities were analysed separately, only the water table depth had significant impact on species richness for two Carex communities and no variable for C. angustifolia community, while height of dominant species influenced aboveground biomass. When the three above-mentioned communities were grouped together, variations in species richness were mainly determined by community type, water table depth and community mean height, while variations in aboveground biomass were driven by community type and the height of dominant species. These findings indicate that if habitat drying of these herbaceous wetlands in this region continues, then two Carex marshes would be replaced gradually by C. angustifolia wet meadow in the near future. This will lead to a reduction in biodiversity and an increase in productivity and carbon budget. Micro-basin tillage is a soil and water conservation practice that requires building individual earth blocks along furrows. In this study, plot experiments were conducted to assess the efficiency of micro-basin tillage on sloping croplands between 2012 and 2013 (5°and 7°). The conceptual, optimal, block interval model was used to design micro-basins which are meant to capture the maximum amount of water per unit area. Results indicated that when compared to the up-down slope tillage, micro-basin tillage could increase soil water content and maize yield by about 45% and 17%, and reduce runoff, sediment and nutrients loads by about 63%, 96% and 86%, respectively. Meanwhile, micro-basin tillage could reduce the peak runoff rates and delay the initial runoff-yielding time. In addition, micro-basin tillage with the optimal block interval proved to be the best one among all treatments with different intervals. Compared with treatments of other block intervals, the optimal block interval treatments increased soil moisture by around 10% and reduced runoff rate by around 15%. Objective: Clinical characteristics of pediatric Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) have been extensively studied whereas scarcely been compared with those of adult GBS. Herein we compared the clinical features of GBS between pediatric and adult patients. Methods: We retrospectively collected the clinical data of 750 patients with GBS (541 adults and 209 children), and compared the clinical characteristics between children and adults. Results: Pain was a more frequent complaint in children (17.2% vs 9.6%, p < 0.01), who were also found with shorter interval from disease onset to nadir (6.3d vs 7.3d, p < 0.01) and higher incidence of bulbar dysfunction (22.0% vs 14.8%, p < 0.05). The disease severity in children was comparable with adults. In addition, a higher incidence of pediatric GBS was found in summer, especially in July and August (both p < 0.01). However, the incidence of antecedent infections of different seasons in adult and pediatric patients was comparable (p > 0.05). The clinical features of acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) and acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP) in children were overall comparable with adult ones (p > 0.05). Similar to adults, bulbar dysfunction (odds ratio [OR]: 4.621, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.240–17.218, p < 0.05) and lower nadir Medical Research Council (MRC) sum score (OR: 0.897, 95% CI: 0.855–0.941, p < 0.01) were also risk factors for mechanical ventilation in children. However, distinct from adult ones, autonomic dysfunction was significantly higher in mechanically ventilated childhood GBS (39.1% vs 8.8%, p < 0.01), which also served as a predictor for mechanical ventilation in pediatric GBS (OR: 70.415, 95% CI: 9.265–535.158, p < 0.01). As to the efficacy of intravenous immunoglobulin, insignificant difference was identified between children and adults. Conclusion: The clinical features of pediatric GBS differ from those of adults. The overall goal of this study was to understand carbon (C) stock dynamics in four different-aged Japanese larch ( Larix kaempferi) plantations in Northeast China that were established after clear-cutting old-growth Korean pine deciduous forests. Four Japanese larch plantations which were at 10, 15, 21, and 35 years old and an old-growth Korean pine deciduous forest which was 300 years old in Northeast China were selected and sampled. We compared the C pools of biomass (tree, shrub and herb), litterfall (LF), and soil organic carbon (SOC) among them. The biomass C stock of larch plantation at 10, 15, 21, and 35 years old was 26.8, 37.9, 63.6, and 83.2 Mg/ha, respectively, while the biomass C stock of the old-growth Korean pine deciduous forest was 175.1 Mg/ha. The SOC stock of these larch plantations was 172.1, 169.7, 140.3, and 136.2 Mg/ha respectively, and SOC stock of 170.4 Mg/ha in the control of old-growth forest. The biomass C stock increased with stand age of larch plantations, whereas SOC stock decreased with age, and C stock of LF did not change significantly ( P > 0.05). The increase of biomass C offset the decline of SOC stock with age, making total carbon stock (TCS) of larch plantations stable from stand ages of 10-35 years. The TCS in larch plantations was much smaller than that in the old-growth forest, suggesting that the conversion of old-growth forests to young larch plantations releases substantial C into the atmosphere. Purpose: Conservation tillage can significantly affect the biological, chemical, and physical properties of soil. This study aimed to determine the effect of conservation tillage on the soil microbial community and respiration and on soil CO emissions. Materials and methods: In this study, the effects of 10 years of conservation tillage (no-till: NT and ridge tillage: RT) on soil CO fluxes and soil microbial communities were assessed in a black soil in Northeast China. Results and discussion: The annual soil CO emissions were higher under moldboard plow (MP) than under NT by 7.8 % ( P < 0.05). The average soil microbial respiration rate from RT was higher than that from MP by 11 % ( P < 0.05). Soil microbial respiration under NT (65 %) and RT (64 %) contributed more to soil CO emissions than MP (54 %). Total soil bacterial and fungal phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) were 1.6 times and 2.6 times greater under NT and RT, respectively, than under MP in the 0-5 cm layer, whereas they decreased by 21-47 % under NT and 26-41 % under RT in the 5-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm layers. The F:B (the ratio of soil fungal PLFAs to bacterial PLFAs) varied with soil depth (0-10 cm) between conservation tillage (NT and RT) and MP. Conservation tillage induced the stratification of the soil microbial community on the vertical profile. Conclusions: RT increased soil microbial respiration, soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration, and soil microbial PLFAs at the 0-5 cm depth, whereas it did not influence the annual soil CO emissions compared to MP with a similar carbon input. To meet the demand for timber consumption, large areas of broadleaved secondary forests have been replaced by larch (Larix spp.) plantations in Northeast China. However, larch plantations face some serious problems, including soil fertility decline, acidification of surface runoff and low levels of biodiversity. Converting pure larch plantations into mixed larch-broadleaved forests would offer a potential solution to some of these issues. Two dominant broadleaved tree species of secondary forests (i.e. Juglans mandshurica and Fraxinus mandshurica), which have been successfully mixed with larch previously, were seeded in thinned pure larch stands to confirm the feasibility of converting even-aged pure larch plantation stands into uneven-aged mixed larch-broadleaved forests. Larch standswere treated with 100, 50 and 25 per cent thinning intensities to evaluate the effects of thinning on the persistence of seeds in two burial positions (under litter and in soil) and at two burial times (6 and 12 months), and on the seed germination at five burial positions (on top of litter, on top of soil, between litter and soil, in soil and in soil with littercoverage).We found that after 1-year burial, J. mandshurica and F. mandshurica seeds had aviability rate of82and10percent, respectively. Most seeds remained viableat25percent (91 percent for J. mandshurica,27per cent for F. mandshurica) and 50 per cent (90 per cent for J. mandshurica, 23 per cent for F. mandshurica) thinning treatments. Seeds of J. mandshurica andF. mandshurica buried in soil with littercover (21,38per cent)and in50per cent thinning treatments (16, 35 per cent) of larch plantation forests had significantly higher seed germination/ seedling survival rate, compared with other burial positions and thinning treatments. Regeneration results (seed persistence, seed germination and seedling survival) suggest that artificially converting larch plantations into larch-broadleaved mixed forests by thinning and adding seed sources of native broadleaved species is a potentially feasible practice. North China is regarded as a center of domestication for broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) and foxtail millet (Setaria italica ssp. italica). The Neolithic Xinglonggou site (ca. 8000–7500 cal. BP) in the Liao River region has revealed the earliest macrobotanical evidence of domesticated millets in Northeast China, but controversy remains as to the importance of the millets in human diet. We employed an interdisciplinary approach involving analyses of starch grains, phytoliths, and usewear patterns to study a range of materials from Xinglonggou, including grinding stones, human dental calculus, and vegetative charcoal. The results demonstrate a broad spectrum of plant exploitation by the first farmers in Northeast China rather than dependence upon singular crops. Furthermore, three types of underground storage organs appear to be major staples, while millets were secondary to another early and important cultivated cereal, Job’s tears (Coix lacryma-jobi L.). Wild grasses and acorns also account for small portions of plants used. This study documents the northernmost and earliest occurrence of Job’s tears in temperate Northeast China, a species which may have originated in the subtropical regions. Soil erosion in the Mollisol region of Northeast China is increasingly severe and directly affects national food security and sustainable development. However, few attempts have been made to create a clear distinction between the effects of rainfall and inflow on hillslope soil erosion. A laboratory study was conducted to discuss the roles and contributions of rainfall intensity and inflow rate to hillslope soil erosion and to fit equations based on variations of rainfall intensity and inflow rate (RI + IR) for soil erosion. A soil pan (8 m long, 1.5 m wide and 0.6 m deep and with an adjustable slope gradient of 0°-35°) was subjected to designed rainfall intensities (0, 50 and 100 mm h) and inflow rates (0, 50 and 100 mm h). The results showed that the effects of RI + IR treatments on hillslope soil loss were significantly greater than those on runoff. Furthermore, the effect of rainfall intensity on hillslope soil loss was significantly greater than the effect of inflow rate. Under the same total water supply, an increase in rainfall intensity resulted in greater average soil loss rates and stronger fluctuations in soil loss than an increase in the inflow rate. The occurrence of rill erosion significantly increased sediment transport capacity on the hillslope, which resulted in an increase in soil loss. Utilizing rainfall intensity and inflow rate, runoff and soil loss equations were generated and validated, and the performances of the two equations were satisfactory. Furthermore, it was determined that both equations are most applicable to the prediction of hillslope soil erosion under long rolling hillslope conditions. For the Mollisol region of Northeast China, the key factor affecting soil erosion on hillslopes is soil particle dispersion caused by rainfall. Therefore, taking measures to cover the soil, such as corn straw mulching, would effectively reduce rainfall erosivity and have significant positive effects on soil erosion prevention and control. Northeast China is an intensive area of resource-exhausted city, which is facing the challenges of industry conversion and sustainable development. In order to evaluate the soil environmental quality influenced by mining activities over decades, the concentration and spatial distribution of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and Zinc (Zn) in surface soils (0-20cm) of a typical resource-exhausted city were investigated by analyzing 306 soil samples. The results showed that the average concentrations in the samples were 6.17 mg/kg for As, 0.19 mg/kg for Cd, 51.08 mg/kg for Cr, 23.27 mg/kg for Cu, 31.15 mg/kg for Ni, 22.17 mg/kg for Pb, and 54.21 mg/kg for Zn. Metals distribution maps produced by using the inverse distance weighted interpolation method and results revealed that all investigated metals showed distinct geographical patterns, and the concentrations were higher in urban and industrial areas than in farmland. Pearson correlation and principal component analysis showed that there were significant positive correlations (p<0.05) between all of the metals, and As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were closely associated with the first principal component (PC1), which explained 39.81% of the total variance. Replacing a rainfed cropping system with an irrigated one is widely assumed to be an effective measure for climate change adaptation. However, many agricultural impact studies have not necessarily accounted for the space-time variations in the water availability under changing climate and land use. Moreover, many hydrologic and agricultural assessments of climate change impacts are not fully integrated. To overcome this shortcoming, a tool that can simultaneously simulate the dynamic interactions between crop production and water resources in a watershed is essential. Here we propose the regional production and circulation coupled model (CROVER) by embedding the PRYSBI-2 (Process-based Regional Yield Simulator with Bayesian Inference version 2) large-area crop model into the global water resources model (called H08), and apply this model to the Songhua River watershed in Northeast China. The evaluation reveals that the model's performance in capturing the major characteristics of historical change in surface soil moisture, river discharge, actual crop evapotranspiration, and soybean yield relative to the reference data during the interval 1979-2010 is satisfactory accurate. The simulation experiments using the model demonstrated that subregional irrigation management, such as designating the area to which irrigation is primarily applied, has measurable influences on the regional crop production in a drought year. This finding suggests that reassessing climate change risk in agriculture using this type of modeling is crucial not to overestimate potential of irrigation-based adaptation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay examines Japanese-Chinese arranged cross-border marriages and investigates the ways in which participants legitimate and render such marriages comprehensible in light of national and local histories. Marriageability in this context is produced not through conceptions of “exotic difference” but instead distinct discourses of “familiarity.” On the one hand, Chinese participants tactically narrate “blood ties” (xueyuan guanxi 血缘关系) to interpret current marriage migration as following relational bonds and thus a “natural” phenomenon. On the other hand, Japanese participants stress Chinese women's “familiarity” (shinkin kan 親近感) with Japan, a familiarity that is claimed to stem from positive historical ties forged by colonialism, and thus effaces Japanese wartime culpability. In short, multiple layered notions of familiarity, shaped by the colonial legacy in East Asia, are at work in rendering these transnational intimate relations possible. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Flooding's impact on shallow groundwater is not well investigated. In this study, we analyzed changes in the depth and quality of a regional shallow aquifer in the 10.9 × 104 km2 Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China, following a large flood in the summer of 2013. Pre- (2008-2012) and post-flood records on groundwater table depth and groundwater chemistry were gathered from 20 wells across the region. Spatial variability of groundwater recharge after the flood was assessed and the changes in groundwater quality in the post-flood period were determined. The study found a considerable increase in the groundwater table after the 2013 summer flood across the region, with the largest (3.20 m) and fastest (0.80 m.s-1) rising height occurring in western Sanjiang Plain. The rising height and velocity gradually declined from the west to the east of the plain. For the entire region, we estimated an average recharge height of 1.24 m for the four flood months (June to September) of 2013. Furthermore, we found that the extreme flood reduced nitrate (NO3-) and chloride (Cl-) concentrations and electrical conductivity (EC) in shallow groundwater in the areas that were close to rivers, but increased NO3- and Cl- concentrations and EC in the areas that were under intensive agricultural practices. As the region's groundwater storage and quality have been declining due to the rapidly increasing rice cultivation, this study shows that floods should be managed as water resources to ease the local water shortage as well as shallow groundwater pollution. To effectively manage water resources in agricultural production, it is necessary to understand the spatiotemporal variation of the water footprint (WF) and the influences of agricultural inputs. Employing spatial autocorrelation analysis and a geographically weighted regression (GWR) model, we explored the spatial variations of the WF and their relationships with agricultural inputs from 1998 to 2012 in Northeast China. The results indicated that: (1) the spatial distribution of WFs for the 36 major maize production prefectures was heterogeneous in Northeast China; (2) a cluster of high WFs was found in southeast Liaoning Province, while a cluster of low WFs was found in central Jilin Province, and (3) spatial and temporal differentiation in the correlations between the WF of maize production and agricultural inputs existed according to the GWR model. These correlations increased over time.
