South Africa has committed to reducing its greenhouse emissions by sixty-five percent by 2030 in their National Integrated Energy Plan (NEIP). The lack of investment and development for renewable energy sources put the country on an uncertain trajectory in fulfilling its 2030 energy commitments. At the same time, the country has been labeled as a region with one of the highest solar energy potentials. Provinces such as Mpumalanga and Northern Cape are on opposite ends of the matter, with Northern Cape is one of the leading provinces for renewal energy, while the Mpumalanga province remains the host to eighty-five per cent of the country's coal plants. Solar energy is an abundant renewable energy source and can be assessed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques. In this paper, the geostatistical technique, Kriging, is employed to predict, estimate, and compare the regional distribution, potential, and variability of annual optimum solar energy (irradiance) between the Mpumalanga Province and Northern Cape Province. Spot-based radiation data are available for solar energy analyses from the GIS Web-based tool Photovoltaic Geographical Information Systems (PVGIS). Kriging was used to estimate the spatial variability of solar energy at an average error of 1.98505% for the Northern Cape Province and 2.32625% for the Mpumalanga Province. It was identified that the Northern Cape receives the highest annual optimum irradiation and has a low overall spatial variation in irradiation over its provincial area. Mpumalanga receives lesser amounts of irradiation but has high overall spatial variation over its provincial area. Most of Northern Cape's central to northwestern regions have the highest annual optimum irradiation ranging from 2583 kWh/m2 to 2638 kWh/m2, while Mpumalanga's highest regions of annual irradiation occur primarily on its western and northwestern parts and ranges in highs of 2345 kWh/m2 to 2583 kWh/m2. The reality of unemployment in South Africa has become a buzz word for the social work profession in tandem with agendas for political parties in their manifestos in the country. For the doubters of political interpretations, the problem seems to have superficial political agendas yet professional analysts have also lamented to its dire bio-psychosocial consequences for the rural young women in South Africa. This paper exposes the bio-psychosocial implications of unemployment for the young women in Cassel in the Northern Cape Province in South Africa. The study employed a qualitative approach which purposely selected eleven unemployed young women between the ages of fifteen and thirty five to provide data saturation point and reveal the bio-psychosocial consequences of unemployment. Thematic data analysis was used which provided significant emergent themes for the study. The findings were that unemployed rural young women are prone to a host of bio-psychosocial problems including alcohol and drug addiction, commercial sex work and associated diseases, family disputes and resentment, homelessness and suicidal thoughts. Deliberate social work interventions have been found to be monumentally lacking yet overtly needed. The paper recommends various social work intervention strategies to help ameliorate the eminent bio-psychosocial problems facing young women in the rural areas of the North West Province. Given the importance of mathematics performance of learners and the challenges in South Africa, it is important that the expertise of all role-players, including the subject advisors who visit the teachers to guide and support them, is used to its full potential. While some studies have explored the experiences of teachers in this regard, literature on the experiences of mathematics subject advisors is scant. Furthermore, little has been published on the experiences of subject advisors within the context of rural areas with a low population, such as the Northern Cape Province. This article addresses the gap by exploring the deeper understanding of mathematics subject advisors’ experiences when conducting school support visits. Taking a qualitative research approach, I conducted semi-structured interviews with six mathematics subject advisors from the four phases (foundation, intermediate, senior, and further education and training) in all five of the education districts of the Northern Cape Department of Education (Frances Baard; Z.F. Mgcwawu; Pixley Ka Seme; Namakwa; and J.T. Gaetsewe). Through Husserl’s phenomenological theoretical framework, complemented with Gibbs’ reflective cycle and Colaizzi’s seven steps of data analysis, participants were found to have had both good and bad experiences when conducting school support visits. Experiences included positive attitudes from educators and schools in general, and good curriculum implementation and teaching and learning practices. However, participants were sometimes received with hostility, and observed poor curriculum implementation and teaching and learning practices. Noteworthy is some negative union influence, lack of specialisation in mathematics by foundation phase departmental heads, lack of coherence in communication, and lack of cooperation and collaboration amongst district officials. If the concerns raised by mathematics subject advisors in this paper are not addressed, these may have a negative impact on the experiences of subject advisors and, by implication, on learner performance as well as education in general. Worldwide, COVID-19 has affected the most deprived communities the hardest and exposed many systemic inequalities, leaving nations vulnerable and destitute. The need for quality education, while heeding to international mandates, including enacting the sustainable development goals (SDG), has become more apparent in promoting equitable and inclusive education for all, which remains a challenge in South Africa with its inherited inequalities. The purpose of this study was to understand how the COVID-19 challenge refocused the commitment of five principals from rural schools in two education districts of the Northern Cape province of South Africa to address resurfaced historic inequalities, including digital access and fluency to attain an equitable learning environment. Semi-structured emailed interviews were conducted with the participants. A thematic analysis of their experiences of the pandemic through the lens of flexible learning theory, revealed that teachers and learners often experienced discrimination-related stress, especially with virtual learning approaches, as schools often cannot offer remote services to advance learning. Furthermore, the participants voiced their uncompromising commitment to inclusion while engaging teachers and learners in identifying possible problems and proposing solutions post-COVID-19. Though the current crisis seems to have perpetuated and deepened existing inequalities in disadvantaged rural South African schools, some school principals are hopeful that as the reality has now been laid bare, it may prompt more urgent action. The paper recommends that school principals and teachers will have to refocus teaching practices towards flexible, inclusively delivered teaching through working collaboratively across disciplines so that they build their personal resilience and advance their technological skills to meet the demands of remote and online learning during a pandemic and beyond. Farmers in Africa, including those in South Africa, rely on rain-fed agriculture, which exposes them to the risks of agricultural drought. Agricultural drought has become a major threat to agricultural production, including the extreme mortality of livestock in recent years, thus negatively impacting household food security. Hence, this paper is aimed at (i) assessing the coping strategies employed by smallholding livestock-farming households during food insecurity shocks, and (ii) assessing the relationship between coping strategies and agricultural drought resilience to food insecurity in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Interviews, more specifically survey interviews, were conducted with 217 smallholder livestock farmers. The data was analyzed using the agricultural drought resilience index (ADRI), the household food insecurity access scale (HFIAS), and structural equation modeling. Smallholder livestock farming households utilized various coping strategies, ranging from selling livestock (21%) to leasing out their farms (1%). The coping strategies of farming households included using alternative land (20%), storing food (20%), requesting feed for their animals (16%), searching for alternative employment (6%), migrating (6%), raising drought-tolerant breeds (5%), receiving relief grants (3%) and using savings and investments (2%). A statistically significant relationship between coping strategies and agricultural drought resilience to food insecurity means that these strategies have important policy implications. Implementing strategies that encourage households to protect their livelihood and utilize their assets (selling livestock) to increase their resilience is crucial for reducing food insecurity and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end hunger and poverty. Black sparrowhawks Accipiter melanoleucus have expanded their range westwards into areas previously unsuitable due to a lack of appropriate tree cover. They now occur in areas where exotic trees (mainly Eucalyptus and Pinus species) have become established: forestry plantations, urban areas and infestations along rivers. This paper reports the status of black sparrowhawks in the Northern Cape, and the discovery of two nests in Pinus plantations close to Nieuwoudtville in 2019. The South African Renewable Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme selects bid winners based on bid tariff (70% weighting) and various economic development criteria (30% weighting). Locating renewable energy (RE) projects in areas with better resources increases their cost competitiveness. As a result, most successful bids for wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to date have been concentrated in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces, respectively. Studies have shown that a wider geographic distribution of wind and solar PV projects mitigates the impacts of the variability of wind and solar PV resources, eases grid congestion and generally improves the power system's operation. This paper conducts a literature review to investigate the procurement methods used in different regions of the world to influence the placement of RE plants, the results of which then inform proposals on adjustments to the current REI4P. The study finds that, after congestion incidents due to concentration of RE plants, some regions implement location-based tariff, where high-resource areas receive the lowest tariff and vice versa. Other regions prioritise on building transmission infrastructure in high-resource areas, while others limit the size of RE installations in one area. Given the current generation and transmission constraints in South Africa, it is important to encourage geographical dispersion of RE plants and avoid RE curtailment, since this can escalate the cost of RE integration significantly. The article focuses on sprites, which are short-lived optical phenomena that occur above large thunderstorms. This paper discusses the first ground-based recorded observations of sprites from South Africa. It is mentioned that in 2 observations nearly 100 sprite elements were recorded from Sutherland in the Northern Cape. It is noted that chemical changes caused by sprite could have an impact on the heating or cooling of the area or interfere with long distance communication.

The launch of the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in 2005, and the introduction of astronomy outreach to interface with the general public, signified a turning point in South African astronomy. We conducted a small study to begin to understand the perceptions of the community that hosts the research facility in Sutherland, in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. There is an ongoing need for good stakeholder engagement for sustainability. The taxonomic identity and phylogenetic relationships of several southern African perennial taxa related to Frankenia repens are discussed. In particular, F. nodiflora Lam., a misunderstood species described from the Cape region and synonymised to F. pulverulenta, is restored for plants endemic to salt-pans and riverbeds in the coastal lowlands across the Cape Flats (Western Cape province, South Africa). Further, a revision of morphologically close plants, usually identified as F. pulverulenta or F. repens, also occurring in similar saline ecosystems of the inland western South Africa revealed the existence of two distinct new entities not matching any described taxa of the genus. Molecular analyses of nuclear ribosomal (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region) DNA sequence data together with morphological divergence allow recognition of those taxa at species rank, within an independent lineage close to F. repens. In consequence, two new sea-heath species are described in the so-called "F. repens group": F. nummularia from the Nama-Karoo Biome (Western Cape and Northern Cape provinces), and F. anneliseae from the Succulent Karoo Biome (Northern Cape province). Full morphological description and type designation are reported for each accepted species as well as data on ecology, habitat, distribution, and taxonomic relationships to other close relatives are given. Until now, Pumilibranchipus deserti was known from only one locality in Namibia. This paper reports the first record of this species from South Africa in Hakskeen Pan, Northern Cape, which represents a new, easterly range extension of the known distribution. Additionally, we provide the first ever account of the habitat conditions with which this species is associated and highlight the precarious conservation status of the ephemeral wetland it was found in. The ethnographic data of the Bleek-Lloyd archive pertaining to the ǀXam Bushmen (San) of the Karoo have been marshalled to great effect in developing understandings of Bushman rock art throughout southern Africa, with implications for archaeological interpretations of hunter-gatherer rock arts worldwide. Rock art from their homelands, however, has received comparatively little attention, and obvious historical content—which would tie the art to the socio-cultural milieu of the Bleek-Lloyd informants—has occasioned relatively little comment. This paper returns to one site (the Strandberg) known to have been a prominent feature in the cultural landscape of the ǀXam to explore the historical imagery present there, examining the ways in which this art demonstrates the ongoing vitality of certain aspects of ǀXam life in the face of the dramatic socio-cultural changes experienced by these groups from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. The paper investigates the range of potential authors for the art, and looks at the context of its production within the expansion of global markets, violent interactions and shifting subsistence options that characterized the late nineteenth-century Northern Cape. This paper presents the first insight into the interpretation of the wood charcoal from the Holocene layers of Wonderwerk Cave. Situated in the Northern Cape Province in the arid interior of South Africa, the site provides a unique and valuable chronological record of past environmental fluctuations and responding human behavioural adaptations spanning the last two million years. The Holocene strata have been dated to cover the last 12.5 ka cal BP years, but exclude the last 100 years because of contamination. A sizeable amount of charcoal was recovered from these strata and remnants have been identified, described and the species composition amongst the strata compared. Most identified species are those that tolerate hot, dry conditions, signalling an arid trend during the Holocene. Comparison with present day species distributions suggests an eastwards shift in modern vegetation. The charcoal data also indicate that during the mid Holocene there was a wetter period from 6.2 to 4.5 ka cal BP, coinciding with stratum 4a. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Methane (CH4) is the second most abundant anthropogenic greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide (CO2), accounting for about 20% of global emissions. CH4 anthropogenic emission sources include landfills, oil and natural gas systems, agricultural activities, coal mining, stationary and mobile combustion, wastewater treatment and certain industrial processes. In this work, we examine the spatiotemporal dynamics of CH4 and its relationship to climatic and vegetation parameters in the Northern Cape province in South Africa. Various datasets from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, Atmospheric Infrared Sounder and the Global Precipitation Climatology Project were used. The results show an increasing trend of CH4 concentration throughout the entire province. The greatest increase in CH4 concentration is observed in the western parts of the province during June-July-August (JJA) season. CH4 concentration shows negligible correlation with most climatic parameters, i.e. Temperature (Temp), Precipitation (Precip) and NDVI for both seasons. The Temp-NDVI relationship shows high correlation values of r = -0.71 and r = 0.82 for the DJF and JJA seasons, respectively. Seasonality plays a critical role in the relationships of the CH4 to climatic and vegetation parameters. Simple Summary: The present study addresses the lack of research on Staphylococcus spp. among dogs in South Africa. The study characterises isolates from retrospective data from a veterinary diagnostic laboratory in terms of time, place, and animal factors. Using data collected from 2012 to 2017, the study analysed 1627 positive Staphylococcus isolates and identified 10 species, the majority (92.0%) of which were classified as coagulase-positive, while a few were coagulase-negative (6.0%) and coagulase-variable (3.0%). Male dogs contributed just over half (53.2%) of the isolates. Dogs aged ≥9 years contributed the most isolates (23.2%). KwaZulu-Natal Province contributed the majority (45.0%) of the isolates, while Northern Cape Province contributed the least (0.1%). Almost half (46.0%) of the isolates came from skin specimens. The study demonstrated a limited variation in the number of Staphylococcus isolates across seasons and the occurrence of a diversity of Staphylococcus species among dogs in South Africa. There is a need for research to improve our understanding of factors that influence the observed disparities in Staphylococcus spp. Proportions observed in this study. The objective of the study was to characterise the Staphylococcus spp. Isolated from dog samples submitted to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory in South Africa in terms of time, place, and person. This study utilised a dataset of 1627 positive Staphylococcus isolates obtained from a veterinary diagnostic laboratory in South Africa from 2012 to 2017. Out of the 1627 confirmed isolates, 10 different species of Staphylococcus were identified. Among these, 92.0% were classified as coagulase-positive staphylococci (CoPS), 6.0% were coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), and 3.0% were coagulase-variable. Male dogs contributed just over half (53.2%) of the Staphylococcus isolates, while female dogs contributed the remaining 46.8%. The largest proportion of isolates (23.2%) were obtained from dogs aged ≥ 9 years, with the highest number of isolates originating from KwaZulu-Natal Province (45.0%) and the least from Northern Cape Province (0.1%). Out of the total samples included in the records, the majority (46.0%) were skin specimens. The number of Staphylococcus isolates recorded showed limited variation between the seasons (24.3% in autumn, 26.3% in winter, 26.0% in spring, and 24.0% in summer). This study highlighted the diversity of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from dogs, and the burden of staphylococcal carriage among dogs in South Africa. This study provides for the first time details of the mineralogy, petrography and mineral paragenetic relationships of manganese ores of the Avontuur deposit, a prominent northern outlier of the Kalahari Manganese Field in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Using a combination of light and electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffractometry on an extensive suite of exploration drill core samples, it is shown that the manganese ores comprise an exceptionally fine-grained assemblage of Mn2+-silicates (friedelite, tephroite, gageite), Mn2+/Mn3+-oxides (jacobsite, hausmannite) and Mn2+-carbonates (rhodochrosite, kutnahorite, Mn-dolomite and Mn-calcite). This mineral assemblage is a product of diagenesis and very low-grade regional metamorphism. Locally, this assemblage is overprinted by contact metamorphism or supergene alteration. Despite close geochemical and textural similarities, the manganese ores of the Avontuur deposit are surprisingly different in their mineralogy compared to the carbonate- and braunite-dominated mangano-lutites of the main Kalahari deposit. Distinctly higher concentrations of both SiO2 and Fe2O3 in the manganolutites of the Avontuur deposit as compared to the main Kalahari Deposit provide the reason for the markedly different mineralogy. Such marked differences in bulk chemistry are tentatively attributed to systematic lateral variations in the physicochemical conditions of mineral precipitation during the deposition of the Hotazel Formation. Canteen Kopje, situated in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, has two main archaeological deposits: alluvial gravels and a mantle of overlying fine sediments known locally as the 'Hutton Sands.' This paper focuses on the fine sediments, the three industries contained within them, and the interface with the underlying gravels in an attempt to clarify their formation and transformation. A Fauresmith assemblage is found at this interface; it is thus crucial to understand the processes of deposition and modification at this poorly understood boundary. The methods used in this study involved the analysis of artifact depositional (dip and orientation) and spatial data, artifact condition, raw materials, and assemblage size profiles. Data presented document the mixing between the lowest levels of the fine sediments and the underlying alluvial gravels. This paper focuses on the importance of policies, procedures and employee training and awareness as aid to manage risks associated with the usage of mobile devices in local government entities in the Namakwa District of the Northern Cape region. A quantitative research method was applied in the study by obtaining responses from a sample of participants in the Namakwa District of the Northern Cape region, using closed-ended questions in the questionnaire, which provided the participants with a predetermined list of coded responses. The results were analyzed and indicated that the majority of the respondents do utilize mobile devices in their organizations. In general, these entities make more use of laptops than any other types of mobile devices. The results indicate that these organizations also still apply the traditional approach of providing their employees with specifically approved types of mobile devices (corporate-owned device) and therefore, do not support the Bring-Your-Own-Device or Choose-Your-Own-Device strategy. There is a clear indication that more efforts are required to ensure improvement, specifically relating to the development of a privacy and security policy and/or procedures as well as providing user training and awareness within municipal organizations. Trimen's false tiger moth, Agoma trimenii (Lepidoptera: Agaristidae), has recently been found to occur in vineyards in the Northern Cape and Limpopo (Groblersdal area) provinces of South Africa. As little is known about the biology and behaviour of the moth, no official monitoring methods or economic thresholds relating to it exist. Consequently, management and registered control options still require development. The first aim of the current review was to gather and critically discuss all the available information on A. trimenii in the context of the information gained from field observations conducted in the Northern Cape during the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 seasons. The paper also includes reporting on field observations made with regard to various aspects of the seasonal life cycle and ecology of A. trimenii, with a view to investigate, in future research, the potential biological control options available. Potential monitoring strategies of A. trimenii in the field were investigated. Various life stages of A. trimenii were identified, peak flight times were established, overlapping generations were determined, and the behavioural traits of all life stages were documented. Ultraviolet blue light traps proved to be the most promising potential monitoring strategy, with the prospect for an A. trimenii pheromone lure holding potential as an alternative monitoring strategy in the future. In summarising all current information on A. trimenii, recommendations for growers to monitor and control A. trimenii are presented towards the development of an integrated pest management system for the moth. This paper focuses on the nineteenth-century |Xam of the northern Cape to examine the relationship of people to the environment beyond techno-economic parameters. As a lived-in, engaged-with Umwelt, the landscape becomes socially and culturally inscribed and patterned, thereby subjectivizing its features. Two ways in which this epistemological and ontological process plays itself out in the case at hand are considered--in terms of human/other-than-human relationality, and in terms of mythological imprints on the landscape. Also considered are certain epistemological implications of these anthropocenic processes for San cosmology, specifically its core feature of ontological ambiguity and mutability. Foster care services are in high demand in South Africa because of the significant number of children in need of care. Reasons for this include the death of biological parents, abuse, neglect, incarceration of parents, parents abandoning their children, and even disappearance of parents. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has worsened this situation. The demand for foster care is putting strain on the delivery of social work services to this vulnerable group. Social workers tasked with implementing the foster care process experience operational impediments and emotional strain, creating an implementation challenge. In examining these challenges, the ecological perspective provides a suitable theoretical framework. This qualitative research study is underpinned by an exploratory design and semi-structured interviews have been conducted to gather primary data. Eight participants have been purposively selected, and the data has been analysed using thematic analysis. Findings suggest that the challenges social workers face fall into three categories: operational obstacles, emotional challenges, and non-adherence to foster care values and principles. Policies and practices are recommended to address the identified challenges to ensure that social workers are empowered to implement foster care services that are child-centred and needs-based. This paper examines the importance of place for the cultural and environmental dynamics shaping Fairtrade cooperatives. It draws on a case study of the Eksteenskuil Agricultural Cooperative (EAC) in South Africa's Northern Cape, which supplies Fairtrade raisins to Traidcraft plc, one of the UK's leading Fairtrade organizations. It examines how the histories and geographies of place continually challenge and redefine the meaning and effectiveness of Fairtrade. This paper reports on the findings of a study conducted in four secondary schools in the Siyanda District of the Northern Cape province of South Africa, with the aim of identifying the functions of code-switching in classroom interactions. Code-switching in these classrooms involves English, Afrikaans, Setswana, and isiXhosa, and goes against official school language policy in most cases. Instances of code-switching are categorised according to Myers-Scotton's (1993, 1998) markedness model, and the functions of the switches are identified. Code-switching is found to fulfil both academic and social functions. Specifically, code-switching is used (i) in explaining and clarifying subject content; (ii) in assisting learners in understanding and interpreting material; (iii) as a tool of teaching in confirming understanding and encouraging participation; (iv) in classroom management, such as maintaining learners' attention and reprimanding disruptive behaviour; and (v) for social functions, such as humour and as a marker of bilingual identity. Summary: South Africa’s Disability Grant (DG) program has been criticized for its poor administration and the dependency culture it promotes. This paper assesses the program’s targeting effectiveness and its effects on labor supply. Using disability self-reports and standard measures of economic well being, the results suggest that DG’s inclusion errors are relatively limited but exclusion errors are substantial and serious. The paper also shows that increased leniency in disability screening policy in the Gauteng province in the early 2000s does not appear to have altered labor market behaviors relative to Northern Cape, a province where there was no change in policy. Planning interventions in Africa that support sustainable rural development, and sustainable rural livelihoods as an extension thereof, are often considered in terms of broad-sweeping central government approaches. However, these homogenous approaches often disregard the differentiation that exists between different rural areas. In this article, the development of Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres as micro-level planning interventions situated within the specific community circumstances of the rural areas of South Africa, are investigated as a change catalyst in sustainable rural livelihood development. This has been done by means of a literature survey and practical research. The main objectives were establishing a theoretical framework through literature studies pertaining to sustainable rural livelihood development, determining whether a community-integrated empowerment approach in this regard was a feasible option, and considering if the development of ECD centres in rural areas aligned with local community priorities and could consequently serve as entry point for sustainable rural livelihood development, and to reflect on the benefits and limitations of this approach as an integral part of sustainable rural livelihood development. In examining the relevance and applicability of the theoretical perspective, the Footprints of Hope ECD centre (a non-governmental organisation) in Griekwastad, Northern Cape (South Africa), was examined as case study. The main findings of this study indicate that the establishment of ECD centres could be an effective change catalyst in sustainable rural livelihood development, especially when approached in an integrated and multidimensional manner. Specific aspects highlighted are the importance of community-driven grassroot initiatives, circumstance-specific approaches towards sustainable rural livelihood development, and the empowerment of local communities through the provision of ECD, employment, skills training, and food security. However, isolated instances of micro-development initiatives cannot effectuate broader sustainable rural livelihood development, and thus, an enabling policy and legal framework as well as the mobilisation of non-governmental organisations is required in this regard. This article arose out of my doctoral research aimed at exploring the role of Indigenous midwives in countering obstetric violence. The study was a qualitative exploratory and descriptive account of women's experience of childbirth at home and healthcare facilities. In addition to focusing on women's experience of birthing, I documented Indigenous midwives' descriptions of their practice. Adopting Indigenous feminist theory and Indigenous research methodology, I undertook semi-structured interviews with 28 rural women in three provinces, i.e. Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Northern Cape in South Africa. Using a thematic analytical framework, the study revealed that women who gave birth in healthcare facilities had negative birthing experiences as compared to those who gave birth at home. The objective of this article is not to argue for facility-based or home birth. Instead, the article articulates my struggle with reconciling the Western worldview with my search for a fitting research methodology. By assuming a reflexive review of my positionality as an Indigenous healer and a midwife whose training and practice were shaped by the very worldview I am challenging, the article centres on an extended life-focused interview with an Indigenous midwife in Setswana. Two new species are described as new to science: S. burgerti sp. nov. from South Africa, Northern Cape province and S. namibicus sp. nov. from South Africa, Northern Cape province and Namibia, Otjozondjupa and Khomas provinces. S. artisquamis Marshall, 1938 stat. prom. is raised to specific rank from S. turneri artisquamis Marshall, 1938. S. lateralis Hustache, 1936 syn. nov. is synonymised with S. simoni Hustache, 1922. Lectotypes of Stereorhynchus simoni Hustache, 1922 and Stereorhynchus lateralis Hustache, 1936 are designated. We describe a process of restitution of nine unethically acquired human skeletons to their families, together with attempts at redress. Between 1925–1927 C.E., the skeletonised remains of nine San or Khoekhoe people, eight of them known-in-life, were removed from their graves on the farm Kruisrivier, near Sutherland in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. They were donated to the Anatomy Department at the University of Cape Town. This was done without the knowledge or permission of their families. The donor was a medical student who removed the remains from the labourers' cemetery on his family farm. Nearly 100 years later, the remains are being returned to their community, accompanied by a range of community-driven interdisciplinary historical, archaeological and analytical (osteobiographic, craniofacial, ancient DNA, stable isotope) studies to document, as far as possible, their lives and deaths. The restitution process began by contacting families living in the same area with the same surnames as the deceased. The restitution and redress process prioritises the descendant families' memories, wishes and desire to understand the situation, and learn more about their ancestors. The descendant families have described the process as helping them to reconnect with their ancestors. A richer appreciation of their ancestors' lives, gained in part from scientific analyses, culminating with reburial, is hoped to aid the descendant families and wider community in [re-]connecting with their heritage and culture, and contribute to restorative justice, reconciliation and healing while confronting a traumatic historical moment. Invasive biological species threaten biodiversity and economies worldwide, often resulting in devastating environmental and socio-economic effects. As a result, there has been a growing realisation of the importance of understanding and effectively managing the complex interactions that arise from biological invasions. A prerequisite for launching such a management strategy, however, is an effective means of predicting the expected effects of the strategy over time. To this end, a spatio-temporal model is proposed in this paper for predicting the extent to which a particularly problematic invasive plant species, Prosopis, spreads when confronted with a threshold-triggered control method. In particular, a spatial analysis is advocated during which the study region is discretised and a data set constructed. Thereafter, the power of machine learning algorithms is leveraged to predict habitat suitability for Prosopis. Finally, a cellular automaton is adopted to simulate the spatial spread and temporal growth of Prosopis within the discretised study region. The practicality of our modelling approach is illustrated by means of a real-world case study in the Northern Cape region of South Africa. • A spatio-temporal model is proposed for predicting the spread of the invasive tree species Prosopis. • The model seeks to capture the species response when confronted with a threshold-triggered control strategy. • The practicality of the model is illustrated by means of a case study in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. • Model outputs may be employed to guide invasive species management. The biometrics of Grey-backed Sparrow-larks Eremopterix verticalis in the handbooks are based on small samples. We summarize winglength, tail-length and mass of a sample of 130 Grey-backed Sparrow -larks mistnetted during ringing on the farm New Holme, Hanover District, Northern Cape, South Africa, in September 2023. The habitat was Grassy Karoo with, on average, March being the month of peak annual rainfall. The sample consisted of 58 females and 72 males. We examined birds for primary moult; 5% had moulted either one or two primaries, indicating that moult was commencing in the population as a whole. This observation, set in the context of an observation made in Namibia, suggests that this species undertakes a prebreeding moult in spring and summer, prior to breeding in late summer and autumn. Background: Incubates are individuals who are start-up entrepreneurs and have deficiencies vested in their own personal capabilities. These personal deficiencies or shortcomings originate from a lack of entrepreneurial experience; a lack of entrepreneurial orientation; and a lack of entrepreneurial and management skills. It is unclear which personal deficiencies are applicable or unique to incubates within the Northern Cape province, South Africa. Purpose: As South Africa's unemployment rate is at the highest it has ever been, the question is posed to government regarding what is being done to improve the situation. This study focuses specifically on identifying the personal deficiencies of incubates within the incubator sector and exactly why these factors are negatively impacting incubates. Setting: This study was conducted amongst incubates, incubator managers and incubator staff within the Northern Cape province, South Africa. Methodology: Semi-structured interviews were conducted amongst 63 participants who were Northern Cape incubates. A purposive non-probability sampling strategy was used whereby homogenous and snowballing sampling were used. The interview data was transcribed and analysed into research themes aligned within entrepreneurship. Findings: The main deficiencies identified included a lack of: (1) entrepreneurial experience; (2) entrepreneurial orientation; and (3) entrepreneurial skills. Value: New themes on entrepreneurial deficiencies amongst incubates are identified that are unique to the region and provides recommendations for future research. Professional development, a diversification of commercial activities, along with a selection instrument for applicant-entrepreneurs in incubators within the region are recommended. The mining town of Aggeneys is situated in a world-class polymetallic base metal district. The Black Mountain Mining Complex (BMC), located in the Northern Cape, South Africa, contains six known orebodies with more than 25.5 Mt contained metal in resources and reserves. Currently, three of the six known orebodies are actively mined. The Big Syncline East prospect is situated directly east of the massive Big Syncline mineral resource of > 150 Mt of open pit and underground resources. Big Syncline is one of the six declared resources at BMC. Recent high-power super conducting quantum interference device transient EM identified a large 3500-Siemens conductor at depths greater than 400 m. Initial follow-up drilling confirmed the presence of mineralized sulfides. A follow-up drone-based magnetic survey was flown, primarily to improve on the poor-quality, high-ground clearance magnetic data recorded with a fixed-wing aeromagnetic system, but also to trial a novel hybrid ground and drone total-field transient EM survey over the extreme topography encountered in the area. Results are very encouraging and now pave the way for more routine implementation of hybrid ground-drone total-field transient EM applications, where a large transmitting loop on the surface is surveyed by a relative fast-moving drone-carried fast-sampling total-field magnetometer. Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat occurs commonly in irrigation regions of South Africa and less frequently in dryland regions. Previous surveys of Fusarium species causing FHB identified isolates using morphological characters only. This study reports on a comprehensive characterisation of FHB pathogens conducted in 2008 and 2009. Symptomatic wheat heads were collected from the Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Bushveld and eastern Free State (irrigation regions), and from one field in the Western Cape (dryland region). Fusarium isolates were identified with species-specific primers or analysis of partial EF-1α sequences. A representative subset of isolates was characterized morphologically. In total, 1047 Fusarium isolates were collected, comprising 24 species from seven broad species complexes. The F. sambucinum (FSAMSC) and F. incarnatum-equiseti species complexes (FIESC) were most common (83.5% and 13.3% of isolates, respectively). The F. chlamydosporum (FCSC), F. fujikuroi (FFSC), F. oxysporum (FOSC), F. solani (FSSC), and F. tricinctum species complexes (FTSC) were also observed. Within the FSAMSC, 90.7% of isolates belonged to the F. graminearum species complex (FGSC), accounting for 75.7% of isolates. The FGSC was the dominant Fusaria in all four irrigation regions. F. pseudograminearum dominated at the dryland field in the Western Cape. The Northern Cape had the highest species diversity (16 Fusarium species from all seven species complexes). The type B trichothecene chemotype of FGSC and related species was inferred with PCR. Chemotype diversity was limited (15-ADON = 90.1%) and highly structured in relation to species differences. These results expand the known species diversity associated with FHB in South Africa and include first reports of F. acuminatum, F. armeniacum, F. avenaceum, F. temperatum, and F. pseudograminearum from wheat heads in South Africa, and of F. brachygibbosum, F. lunulosporum and F. transvaalense from wheat globally. Livestock production systems are essential for sustaining household food security, especially in the drylands of Africa. This study assesses the impact of South Africa's targeted Large Stock Unit (LSU) social protection program on the acute food insecurity effects of the COVID-19 pandemic among selected smallholder livestock farmers. An embedded research approach was utilized in four local municipalities purposively selected in the Northern Cape Province, where 217 households were selected using a stratified proportionate random method. A structured questionnaire was employed, while secondary data on beneficiary farmers were collected from implementing agencies. A full information maximum likelihood (FIML) Endogenous Switching Regression (ESR) model was adopted to capture variations due to self-selection bias among respondents. ESR model results show that the decision maker's age, the household head's education level, the land holdings' size, average relative livestock losses, the orientation of production, and the level of external support impact food security. The study concludes that based on average treatment effects analysis, beneficiaries of the LSU program are better off in the household food security relative to their non-beneficiary counterparts. These findings validate the need for enhancing support initiatives during COVID-19 shocks for households to attain food security using their main livelihood sources as the gateway. Increasing the diversity of livelihood strategies in these vulnerable communities needs to be scaled up to protect households from acute food insecurity. Targeted support programs, including direct financing and binding networks, may also be supported through youth-sensitive training programs to enhance mitigations and resilience against COVID-19 acute food insecurity. A policy can tap into existing local structures and province-wide institutional platforms for the long-term sustainability of the LSU support initiatives and mitigation of COVID-19 food security vulnerabilities. Power utility companies rely on forecasting for the operation of electricity demand. This presents an application of linear quantile regression, non-linear quantile regression, and additive quantile regression models for forecasting extreme electricity demand at peak hours such as 18:00, 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00 using Northern Cape data period 01 January 2000 to 31 March 2014. The variables were selected using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator. Additive quantile regression models were found to be the best-fitting models for hours 18:00 and 19:00, whereas linear quantile regression models were found to be the best-fitting models for hours 20:00 and 21:00. Out of sample forecasts for seven days (01 to 07 April 2014) were used to solve the unit commitment problem using mixed-integer programming. The unit commitment problem results showed that using all the generating units such as hydroelectric, wind power, concentrated solar power and solar photovoltaic is less costly. This study's main contribution is the development of models for forecasting hourly extreme peak electricity demand. These results could be useful to system operators in the energy sector who have to maintain the minimum cost by scheduling and dispatching electricity during peak hours when the grid is constrained due to peak load demand. A new mineral species, hydroxymcglassonite-(K), ideally KSr4Si8O20(OH)·8H2O, has been found in the Wessels mine, Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. It is granular (<0.05 mm), associated with meieranite, sugilite, aegirine, pectolite, and yuzuxiangite. The mineral is colorless, transparent with a white streak and a vitreous luster. It is brittle and has a Mohs hardness of 4.5–5.0; cleavage is perfect on {001} and no parting or twinning was observed. The measured and calculated densities are 2.60(3) and 2.614 g/cm3, respectively. Optically, hydroxymcglassonite-(K) is uniaxial (+), with ω = 1.555(5), ε = 1.567(5) (white light), and absorption O > E. Hydroxymcglassonite-(K) is insoluble in water or hydrochloric acid. An electron microprobe analysis yielded an empirical formula (based on 13 non-H cations pfu) K1.01(Sr2.99Ca1.03)Σ4.02Si7.99O20(OH)·8H2O, which can be simplified to K(Sr,Ca)4Si8O20(OH)·8H2O. Hydroxymcglassonite-(K) is tetragonal with space group P4/mnc and unit-cell parameters a = 9.0792(2), c = 16.1551(9) Å, V = 1331.70(9) Å3, and Z = 2. It is isostructural with hydroxyapophyllite-(K), KCa4Si8O20(OH)·8H2O, with Sr substituting for Ca. The crystal structure of hydroxymcglassonite-(K) is characterized by SiO4 tetrahedra sharing corners to form (Si8O20)8– sheets parallel to (001), which are connected by the K and B (= Sr + Ca) cations, as well as hydrogen bonding. The K cation is coordinated by eight H2O groups, and the average K–O distance of 2.941(3) Å is shorter than that of 2.950(3)–2.975(3) Å in hydroxyapophyllite-(K) or fluorapophyllite-(K). The B cation is sevenfold-coordinated (4O + 2H2O + OH), and the average B-O distance of 2.522(3) Å is noticeably longer than that of 2.422–2.435 Å in hydroxyapophyllite-(K) or fluorapophyllite-(K). The Raman spectra of hydroxymcglassonite-(K) and hydroxyapophyllite-(K) are very comparable, especially in the O-H stretching region. The discovery of hydroxymcglassonite-(K), the first Sr-bearing mineral of the apophyllite group, implies that more Sr-bearing members of the group may be found in nature or synthesized in laboratories, but the possibility for an incomplete solid solution between hydroxyapophyllite-(K) and hydroxymcglassonite-(K), due to the size difference between Sr2+ and Ca2+, cannot be ruled out. This is the story of Edward Presgrave, a young Australian who went to South Africa to fight in the Boer War and then drifted up to the Northern Cape where he eventually joined Jakob Marengo in his war against the Germans. In 1905 Presgrave was actively supporting Marengo's forces supplying them with horses, cattle and arms as well as fighting alongside Marengo in a number of engagements with German forces. Presgrave's story is one of adventure, sacrifice, deception and betrayal and in many ways his short life and untimely death serve to illuminate many of the broader issues that marked life in colonial Namibia and in the Northern Cape borderlands. Background: Distributed training has been cited as an opportunity that offers transformative learning experiences in preparing a future workforce to address local needs. For this reason, rural and longitudinal placements are increasingly being adopted by medical schools across the world. Place, participation and person are considered integral in the process of transformation of medical students into responsive graduates on the distributed platform. This article aims to explore the experiences and perceptions of student learning on a rural training platform in South Africa while considering the interrelation between person, place and participation as a process of transformation to becoming a health care professional. The research forms part of a 5-year longitudinal case study, initiated in 2019 to explore a university-rural hospital collaboration on students, staff and the local health care system. Methods: Data was collected using interviews and surveys from 63 purposively selected and consenting participants between January and November of 2019. All qualitative data were inductively analysed using an interpretivist approach to thematic analysis for the purposes of this article. All quantitative data was analysed descriptively using Microsoft Excel. Ethics and permission for this research was granted by the Stellenbosch University Human Research Ethics Committee, the Undergraduate Students Programme Committee and the Northern Cape Department of Health, South Africa. Findings: Four themes, namely: authenticity of context; participation in a community of practice and social activities; supervision and reflection; and distance support were extracted from the data. These findings contribute to the theory of transformative learning on the distributed platform by expanding on the interrelationship of person, place and participation, specifically as it relates to participation within various communities and practices. The value of active participation in reflection and supervision, distance academic support and social support systems are explored. Conclusions: The three dimensions and interrelationship of person, place and participation in the process of transformative learning on the rural training platform can be further unpacked by exploring the types of participation that have facilitated student learning in this research context. Dust storms are meteorological hazards associated with several adverse health impacts including eye irritations, respiratory and cardiovascular disorders, and vehicular road accidents due to poor visibility. This study investigated relations between admissions from a large, public hospital that serves people living in Northern Cape and Free State provinces, South Africa during 2011 to 2017, and meteorological variables (temperature and air quality) during two dust storms, one in October 2014 (spring) and the second in January 2016 (summer), identified from the media as no repository of such events exists for South Africa. Distributed nonlinear lag analysis and wavelet transform analysis were applied to explore the relationships between hospital admissions for respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, eye irritation, and motor vehicle accidents; maximum temperature, and two air quality 'proxy measures,' aerosol optical depth and Ångström exponent, were used as ground-based air quality data were unavailable. Eye irritation was the most common dust-related hospital admission after both dust storm events. No statistically significant changes in admissions of interest occurred at the time of the two dust storm events, using either of the statistical methods. Several lessons were learnt. For this type of study, ground-based air quality and local wind data are required; alternative statistical methods of analysis should be considered; and a central dust storm repository would help analyze more than two events. Future studies in South Africa are needed to develop a baseline for comparison of future dust storm events and their impacts on human health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: The genetic diversity of southern African sheep remains under-studied. We present here the complete mitochondrial genomes of archaeological southern African sheep, as well as the genomes from three indigenous southern African breeds—Damara, Namaqua Afrikaner, and Ronderib Afrikaner. We show that southern African sheep exhibit limited genetic diversity which is consistent with our understanding of their migration south from northernmost Africa. Intriguingly, many of the modern sheep show close relationships with the archaeological sheep, implying an ancestor-descendant relationship. Similarly, the sheep that do not exhibit a close relationship with the archaeological sheep nonetheless cluster closely with each other and do not show a close relationship with European and Asian sheep. This suggests that they too are descendants of indigenous sheep and not the product of historic introductions of exotic breeds. We investigated the genetic diversity and historic relationships among southern African sheep as well as the relationships between them and sheep outside the continent by sourcing both archaeological and modern sheep samples. Archaeological sheep samples derived from the site Die Kelders 1, near Cape Town, date to approximately 1500 years ago. The modern samples were taken as ear snips from Damara, Namaqua Afrikaner, and Ronderib Afrikaner sheep on a farm in Prieska in the Northern Cape. Illumina sequencing libraries were constructed for both ancient and modern specimens. Ancient specimens were enriched for the mitochondrial genome using an in-solution hybridization protocol and modern specimens were subjected to shotgun sequencing. Sequences were mapped to the Ovis aries reference genome, assigned to haplogroups and subhaplogroups, and used to calculate a phylogenetic tree using previously published, geographically dispersed mitochondrial genome sheep sequences. Genetic diversity statistics show that southern African sheep have lower diversity than sheep in other regions. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that many modern southern African sheep are likely descended from prehistoric indigenous sheep populations and not from sheep imported from Europe during the historic period. The aim of this paper is to extend existing research that analyses technical and allocative efficiency and its determinants by quantifying and comparing the potential financial gains from improving technical and allocative (cost) efficiency levels of emerging raisin producers from Eksteenskuil in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Results show that, at whole farm level, the average financial gains in margin above variable costs from improving technical and cost efficiency amount to R21 335 and R21 581, respectively. Importantly, the gains represent potential increases of 246% and 249%, respectively, in margins above variable costs. Improving the levels of efficiency with which the farmers use their inputs thus may contribute substantially to increase the contribution of raisin production to the livelihoods of raisin farmers from Eksteenskuil. The close comparison of the potential gains suggests that the current emphasis of extension services on maximising output levels should be extended to also promote the use of inputs in cost minimising combinations. Farmer-to-farmer skills transfer has a major role to play in supporting the farmers to use their inputs in a technically efficient manner. Extension officers and other support services should pay more attention to developing the skills of the farmers to be able to select the least cost combination of inputs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nature of the encounter and exchange between researchers and subject communities is complex. The highly researched traditionalist ...Khomani community in the Northern Cape, South Africa, has come to perceive researchers as often exploitative. The community expresses the expectation that research should result in immediate financial benefit for them. This paper addresses these perceptions and examines participatory research methods that ensure that marginalised voices are heard and represented. In March 2003 a small community group, `The Concerned People Against Asbestos (CPA)' based at Prieska in the Northern Cape, won a court case in a foreign country. That case may change the way in which multinational corporations behave in the developing world. Until now the hidden costs of mining in Southern Africa have been paid for by labour. The CPA's victory may also help to end that injustice. It is usual to depict communities like Prieska as dis-empowered and impoverished. Despite its lack of resources the CPA was able to synchronise an elaborate game of small and big politics. The group's victory suggests that such communities have levels of political and organisation skill which given the right alignments can be irresistible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article follows the study of the anti-politics machine that explains why and how developmental projects fail, in the context of a little drought-stricken Karoo town called Vanwyksvlei, Northern Cape. The five (corporate) social responsibility programmes, under the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) in South Africa, can be considered a failure and this reveals 'mismatches' and contradictions in what is considered 'development' between Vanwyksvlei's residents and SKA. With ethnographic methods, semi-structured interviews and textual analysis, the 'anti-politics machine' is useful in deconstructing and depoliticising the relationship among developmental actors involved in the five programmes. Firstly, deconstructing and depoliticising the five programmes attempts to explain the success-failure binary of development that points to critiquing the development discourse from problem-orientated to a problem-solving orientation. Secondly, Habermas' theory of communicative action aids in the quest of consensus through deliberative and negotiation strategies between local people, national governments and global organisations. Lastly, the significance of the anti-politics machine goes beyond accounting for the five failed corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes and extends to the recognition of local sphere, not only to depoliticise the politics of astronomy knowledge with indigenous insight, but also assist in the urgency of water supply. The shortage of reading material and information resources in many South African schools, especially those in poor communities, is a problem that needs to be addressed. While there has been considerable progress with the implementation of an outcomes-based curriculum relying on a learner-centred, resource-based methodology, libraries are largely absent in disadvantaged schools. This paper reviews the situation of school libraries in the Northern Cape, highlighting progress made in the last few years. Aspalathus linearis (Burm. F.) R. Dahlgren (Fabaceae) or rooibos, is a strict endemic species, limited to areas of the Cederberg (Western Cape) and the southern Bokkeveld plateau (Northern Cape) in the greater Cape Floristic Region (CFR) of South Africa. Wild rooibos, unlike the cultivated type, is variable in morphology, biochemistry, ecology and genetics, and these ecotypes are broadly distinguished into two main groups, namely, reseeders and resprouters, based on their fire-survival strategy. No previous assessment of genetic diversity or population structure using microsatellite markers has been conducted in A. linearis. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that wild rooibos ecotypes are distinct in genetic variability and that the ecotypes found in the Northern Cape are differentiated from those in the Cederberg that may be linked to a fire-survival strategy as well as distinct morphological and phytochemical differences. A phylogeographical and population genetic analyses of both chloroplast (trn LF intergenic region) and newly developed species-specific nuclear markers (microsatellites) was performed on six geographically representative wild rooibos populations. From the diversity indices, it was evident that the wild rooibos populations have low-to-moderate genetic diversity (He: 0.618–0.723; Ho: 0.528–0.704). The Jamaka population (Cederberg, Western Cape) had the lowest haplotype diversity (H = 0.286), and the lowest nucleotide diversity (π = 0.006) even though the data revealed large variations in haplotype diversity (h = 0.286–0.900) and nucleotide diversity (π = 0.006–0.025) between populations and amongst regions where wild rooibos populations are found. Our data suggests that populations of rooibos become less diverse from the Melkkraal population (Suid Bokkeveld, Northern Cape) down towards the Cederberg (Western Cape) populations, possibly indicative of clinal variation. The largest genetic differentiation was between Heuningvlei (Cederberg, Western Cape) and Jamaka (FST = 0.101) localities within the Cederberg mountainous region, and, Blomfontein (Northern Cape) and Jamaka (Cederberg) (FST = 0.101). There was also a significant isolation by distance (R2 = 0.296, p = 0.044). The presence of three main clusters is also clearly reflected in the discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) based on the microsatellite marker analyses. The correct and appropriate management of wild genetic resources of the species is urgently needed, considering that the wild Cederberg populations are genetically distinct from the wild Northern Cape plants and are delineated in accordance with ecological functional traits of reseeding or resprouting, respectively. The haplotype divergence of the ecotypes has also provided insights into the genetic history of these populations and highlighted the need for the establishment of appropriate conservation strategies for the protection of wild ecotypes. After 1994, South African policy changes brought about variations in language education resulting in many monolingual classrooms becoming multilingual. Much of the current literature focuses on either providing recommendations to diverse approaches of teaching a second language or describing the experiences of second language learners while limited studies unearthed teachers' experiences in multilingual classrooms, especially where the language of learning and teaching (LoLT) was Afrikaans. In this article we examine responses of teachers in the Northern Cape to teaching isiXhosa to learners whose mother-tongue is Afrikaans. From an interpretivist lens and using a case study design, we present 6 Afrikaans Foundation Phase teachers' (FPTs) experiences in teaching isiXhosa as a second First Additional Language (FAL) to non-isiXhosa speakers. Data from in-depth email interviews were coded and thematically analysed. The results from this study show that, while teachers regard multilingualism as fundamental, they equally regard the isiXhosa curriculum as a tool to develop learners' language proficiency. The purpose of this article is to highlight how technologies, which have for centuries revolutionalized healthcare, have conversely increased health disparities among disadvantaged communities in South Africa during coronavirus disease (COVID-19). A hard lockdown imposed on the country in March 2020, as an initial measure of containment of the novel virus, became unfeasible due to detrimental, mostly economic effects on the economy. From 1 May, the government eased the lockdown restrictions and shifted the emphasis from containment to behaviour change measures using communication strategies that promoted adherence. Yet, even within disadvantaged communities, there have been differences in health-related access with differing levels of disadvantage. Secondary data were analysed from a cross-sectional quantitative survey conducted in ten disadvantaged communities in the Northern Cape and Gauteng Provinces involving 1742 participants. Results show that the lack of digital access to information created an obstacle to adherence to some recommended COVID-19-related behaviour change measures. Disparities existed between the two provinces' disadvantaged communities based on an urban versus a rural province. The study emphasized the need to assess the extent of underlying obstacles to health equity and achievement of healthcare goals propagated by an interface between healthcare and socio-economic factors. Breakthroughs in healthcare, facilitated by virtual modes of communication may be undermined by a digital divide exacerbating disparities in disadvantaged communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
