The research problem of this paper is related to numerous open questions in the field of energy, its understanding, its use, and the challenges of the energy future. After the introductory part, in which a brief historical overview of energy literacy is provided, the paper focuses on energy literacy, its emergence, and the different approaches to its definition and measurement. The paper analyzes the energy literacy of students at the Faculty of Economics in Rijeka based on their cognitive, affective, and behavioral skills. Their knowledge about energy, energy processes, and the energy efficiency of the objects they encounter on a daily basis is examined. Their personal attitudes and values are examined through various forms of personal initiatives and active participation in energy sustainability projects. Finally, the habits and behavioral patterns that the respondents have in their daily lives and their tendencies to save energy resources and find energy-efficient solutions are examined. Despite some positive findings, the current results are not satisfactory and point to the creation of adequate public policies with a particular focus on education and the role of the corrective mechanisms of the state, but also the need for joint negotiations between policy makers, regulators, scientists, representatives of civil society, and the business community. The particular contribution of this work is reflected in being the first research of its kind conducted among Croatian economics students, as well as among Croatian students in general; in the creation of a research instrument that is conceptually consistent with the findings from the existing literature, but with an original set of questions within each energy literacy skill adapted to the cultural and sociological background of the respondents; and in a kind of progress from previous research by taking into account the quantitative aspect (in addition to the qualitative) assessment of the respondents' energy literacy. Purpose - At a time of exceptionally fast technological advancement, smart cities have become necessary for the better management of existing resources in a tourist destination. The aim of this paper is to investigate if the smart city concept has been recognized in micro destinations in the Kvarner region for the purpose of sustainability and raising residents' quality of life. Design/Methodology - The research has been conducted in the Kvarner tourist destination in December 2019. Citizens were asked their opinions within the scope of the following narrow tourist destinations - Lovran, Opatija and Rijeka. The questionnaire used closed-ended questions. This short research focuses on public perception regarding the smart city concept. Findings - The results show that 67% of the people living in tourist destinations are not familiar with the smart city concept. Most, however, state that its implementation would improve the touristic development of the destinations. The development of smart destinations leaves plenty of room for each community undertaking that step to define the shape and functionality of its environment while respecting the community's historical, cultural-artistic and social heritage. Originality of the research - There are many papers dealing with the topic of smart cities, but it is rare for authors to explore the transformation of traditional tourist destinations into contemporary sustainable communities. The obtained results can be used to inform policy making towards becoming more proactive, smart and sustainable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a comparison between a conventional flat roof and an intensive green roof was made. Emphasis was on thermal conductivity of individual layers, the calculation of thermal resistance, and calculation of the thermal transmittance coefficient through both roof variants. The calculations for the two analysed roof variants were made for a building located in the town of Rijeka on the Adriatic coast. This paper also presents the construction technology comparison of the analysed roof variants. The construction cost was also analysed for both roof variants together with time needed for the execution of variant solutions. Finally, maintenance plans for both roof variants were presented in this paper. The results show that the construction costs of an intensive green roof are higher than the construction costs of a conventional flat roof and that the maintenance of the intensive green roof is more complex. On the other hand, the results of the analysis also show that constructing a green roof will result in more energy savings in the long term than in the case of constructing a conventional flat roof. In addition, there are several other benefits that go in favour of constructing an intensive green roof. Most prominent among those benefits are environmental and social benefits. This paper seeks to highlight the impact of the increasing container throughput in northern Adriatic ports on air quality. A comparative analysis of air quality is given, which consist of certain environmental parameters at selected measuring stations near the container terminals of the northern Adriatic ports Rijeka, Trieste, Koper, and Venice. The parameters were analyzed based on a limited amount of air quality monitoring data for the port areas. As the port transport sector increases pollutant emissions, the results of these analyzes can also be used to take appropriate measures to reduce these particulate matter emissions. The aim of this paper is to determine the impact of increasing the container throughput within the ports of the northern Adriatic Sea on air quality, based on certain environmental parameters related to the shipping or delivery of containers by road. The results of the research, based on available data, have shown that the increase in container throughput of the northern Adriatic ports has not decreased the air quality of urban areas of the respective port cities. The air quality value of the northern Adriatic ports is substantially below the limits set by the EU Air Quality Directive (2008/50), thus it does not affect the health of the inhabitants of the analyzed cities. In this paper, a model of water flow in the Porto Baroš has been developed, which is the part of the Rijeka coastal area, for the purpose of its renovation and conversion. For numerical simulation purposes, the depth of the seabed of Port was previously performed, based on which the geometry and numerical domain of Port were made. By conducting the flow simulation, the analysis was carried out, after which the analyses of the conceptual solutions with the introduction of the pipe discharge were performed with the aim of reducing the water pollution of the Porto Baroš area. Port geometry will be made in commercial SMS software and numerical domains and simulations in OpenFOAM open-source software. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RAILROADS ,RAILROAD design & construction ,COMPUTER software - Abstract
One of the biggest issues in railroad planning and design is determining the optimal railroad route. After the railroad route variants are determined, the major challenge is to identify and select the criteria which will be used for the analysis and evaluation of the variants. This paper is primarily concerned with the evaluation and selection of an optimal railroad route between Rijeka and Zagreb as part of the Mediterranean Corridor. The large number of criteria used to analyze solutions makes this decision-making complex. The objectives are usually in conflict with each other, and there are usually several groups of decision makers involved in the process. The aim of this paper was to analyze alternative railroad route variants using the optimization method of multi-criteria analysis. To achieve the research aim, a model comprising the defined criteria and sub-criteria including their weighting coefficients was set. To perform the analysis, the authors applied the defined model for evaluation and selection of a railway route between Rijeka and Zagreb using the PROMETHEE II method for multi-criteria ranking of alternatives and the computer software "Visual PROMETHEE". The value of the defined model is expressed by the presented methodology of multi-criteria optimization, which is used in railroad planning and designing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The implementation of renewable energy sources and heat pumps with natural refrigerants in the existing 3rd-generation district heating (DH) systems is a promising technology for the conversion to a 4th-generation DH system. This paper aims to investigate this transition through a case study for the existing DH system in Croatia. The district of Rijeka, which is considered in the case study, has an existing 3rd-generation DH system with a capacity of 9.2 MW, which was originally designed for a temperature regime of 130/70 °C and produces thermal energy from natural gas. In order to use heat pumps efficiently in such a system, the temperature of the distribution system and the energy consumption should be reduced. Trnsys software was used to perform complete dynamic simulations of the DH system. Used baseline models were validated according to the actual energy consumption reported by the heat supplier. The application of heat pumps with natural refrigerants in combination with on-site electricity production (PV system) can almost eliminate system CO
2 emissions, reduce primary energy consumption and lower operation costs. Simulations were performed for 18 different scenarios that included 2 different building envelope variants. The results were compared, then discussed and conclusions were drawn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

STATE power ,RESIGNATION from public office ,PRIME ministers ,GOVERNORS ,MONARCHY - Abstract
In the period of the Austro- Hungarian monarchy Hungaria state authority in the city and district of Fiume was exercised by the governor of Fiume and Maritime Croatia, who was at the same time president of the Hungarian Royal Maritime Authority. As such his competence in naval and commercial issues encompassed the entire Hungaro-Croatian coast. The dual position of the governor was reflected in the government structure as well: while as governor he was directly subordinated to the prime minister, as president of the Maritime Authority he was responsible to the minister of agriculture, industry and trade (and later to the latter"s official successors). The present paper explores the extent to which this dual position helped or hindered the activities of the individual governors, while also drawing attention to the dissonances inherent in the centralising efforts and power strategies of the Hungarian state. Another aim of the author was to reveal the main causes that led to the resignation of the successive governors, thereby contributing to a more nuanced view of their roles and activities. The paper aims to determine the interdependence between quality ratings and the level of satisfaction of Rijeka’s inhabitants with the city’s public urban transport system. The purpose of the study is to identify the effects that the individual elements of citizens’ satisfaction with public urban transport services have on public urban transport quality ratings. To accomplish the study’s objective and purpose, and to prove the main hypothesis that there is a statistically strong and positive relationship between quality ratings and satisfaction with public urban transport, numerous scientific methods have been applied, in particular the survey method, the method of analysis and synthesis, and the methods of descriptive and inferential statistics. The study’s main finding points to the low quality of Rijeka’s public urban transport system and to the low level of satisfaction of citizens with the system. A statistically strong and positive relationship was found between quality ratings and the satisfaction of citizens with public urban transport services. Citizens are the least satisfied with the frequency of public transport intensity and the availability of urban transport in evening. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The proclamation of Rijeka as a free port in 1719, and the construction of the lazaretto (naval quarantine station) of St Charles Borromeo in 1725, initiated the economic and urban development of Rijeka, which grew from a small coastal town into a significant centre of manufacturing and industry. With the lazaretto and the largest factory, a sugar refinery built in 1750, the city's first manufacturing zone was formed. In the second zone, along the Rječina River, in 1821 a paper mill was built, which in 1833 received the first steam engine, with which the industrialisation of the city began. This article describes the materials and structures of the industrial buildings that characterise this period. In proto-industrial and early industrial times, construction consisted mainly of massive stone and brick walls or masonry-vaulted structures. In the 19th century, buildings begin to adapt to the production processes, which influenced the development of a new architectural typology. The internal structures were made of wood, a readily available and inexpensive material, with which the builders already had extensive experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses a short but very important episode of First World War history concerning the Yugoslav ruling over Rijeka (Fiume) in 1918 as seen through the war experience and writings of Stanislaw Krakow. In the interwar period, Krakow became one of the most known representatives of Expressionism while at the same time a prominent journalist, philatelist, numismatist, art collector, movie director, etc. As a writer, he dedicated a few works to the Rijeka events where he participated as an officer in the Serbian battalion sent from the Thessaloniki front to "cross over every Yugoslav province in order to bring them freedom and to announce unification of Southern Slavs." Krakow spent one month in Rijeka, arriving on 15 November, but when the Serbian army withdrew two days later he stayed as a Serbian representative within the international mission of French General Andre Tranié. During the month spent in Rijeka, Krakow was witness to many conflicts among pro-Italians and pro-Yugoslavs amid a tense atmosphere with diplomatic clashes between great powers. Describing the early phase of Rijeka's crisis, Krakow added his own unique angle to the events and we believe that perspective and his extraordinary life story are worthy of presentation to the public appreciation. For the purpose of this paper we rely on his writings as a base for our research, accompanied by documents stored in the Archive of Yugoslavia, the National Library of Serbia, relevant historiography works and newspapers. A giant aneurysm is a restricted expansion of a blood vessel. The most common aneurysms are found on the aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body. A giant aneurysm can also be found on coronary arteries and, thus, on peripheral blood vessels. Giant aneurysms of coronary arteries are rare, accounting for 0.02% - 0.2%. The cause of giant aneurysms is a deterioration of the blood vessel wall. Other causes of aneurysms may include atherosclerosis, congenital diseases, Kawasaki disease in children, Takayasu’s arteritis, connective tissue disease, vasculitis, and coronary artery trauma, as a result of percutaneous coronary intervention. Clinical outcomes of giant aneurysms may include thrombus formation, rupture, embolization, and fistula formation. Resections of giant coronary aneurysms can be performed surgically and by percutaneous invasive approach.1,2 This paper is a case report on a patient diagnosed with a giant aneurysm of the left coronary artery (50x45x40mm). This paper presents an invasive percutaneous coronary intervention which successfully excluded the giant aneurysm from the coronary circulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POLITICAL doctrines ,ECONOMIC policy ,EMERGING markets - Abstract
Since about half a century, tiger economies have generated a copious literature on the sources of their sustained growth. At regular times, the notion of a tiger economy has been copied to any growth process, even when the growth process softened in the aftermath of an initial boom. In the EU, these booms are well-known in the pre-access period of new members in the many enlargements since the initial EEC-6 club. There are, of course, many corollaries to the literature on the grail of development where real sources of development ask for a comprehensive format. For West-Balkan countries, the record is not simple. Some previous conferences contributions in Rijeka and Vitez focused on the low trade-intensity in the region. Often, gravity-models are used in order to obtain comparative settings related to distance and the size of the related economies. Depending on the actual way to implement the basic model, the conclusions are unanimous in pointing at a low trade-intensity. The regional reality supports this thesis. Though traffic keeps growing in ports, on highways and for Danube navigation, the current level remains below the peaks of the belle époque in the eighties. As opposed to the geographical gravity setting, this paper aims to introduce a kind of tiger notion in view of a traditional price equation, linking a particular market share of any (international) sales flow (q) in its relevant EU market (Q) to the relative competitive world price (PRC). This simple approach from managerial economics: q = f(p, p (competition), Q), can be simplified in a market-share setting: ln q/Q = a + b ln PRC, which allows for a wide range of applications from the finest detail of about 10,000 products in the CN nomenclature up to both industrial or country aggregates. This 'procedure' is applied to the wood & furniture industry in three Balkan countries, i.e. our guest country and two main neighbours. The results are quite promising. First, the rough wood and paper sections of the trade classification reveal a sharp growth towards the EU with marked upgrades for BIH, compared to Croatia and Serbia. Second, since overall production volume remains below the reforestation capacity, export growth-strategies remain valid, including a value-added capacity in the furniture business. Therefore, the NIC (New Industrialized Country) status of tiger countries can also be applied as a nickname to (NIC-named) sectors and industries. On top of the nice results for detailed products, the method also allows a wider macro-regional comparative analysis. On the one hand, the method invites to compare economic sectors such as rough wood (including sliced and peeled) and (half) finished products (e.g. furniture and their components). On the other hand, the traditional price equation may suggest aggregated research-based expansion tracks, either in the pure sense of macro-economic models or the more encyclopaedian setting of European and global business-environment. Monitoring and analysis of changes in the volume and area of nourished beaches is crucial to inform any beach renourishment programme. The aim of this study is to utilise UAV surveys and SfM photogrammetry to assess the beach nourishment performance of an artificial gravel beach exposed to a range of external forcing, including storms. The paper presents results from nineteen UAV surveys conducted between January 2020 and January 2021 at Ploče, an artificial beach in Rijeka (Croatia). The beach was nourished twice and eleven storm events, ranging from weak to strong, were recorded during this period. The Agisoft Metashape software was used to obtain point clouds and digital elevation models (DEMs) from UAV images; Matlab and CloudCompare were used for further analysis of the DEMs. The accuracy and precision of the DEMs was assessed and uncertainty levels of ±5 cm were applied to all derived DEMs. The study provides new insights into the response of the emerged part of the beach to storms. Predictably, the largest changes were recorded after the first storm following beach nourishment. The longshore variability in the beach response to storms was identified from full 3D point clouds. Most of the lost sediment was from the east side of the beach, while the rest of the beach aligned with the predominant wave direction through cross-shore and longshore processes. Offshore/onshore sediment exchange between the lower and upper beach face on the western side manifested itself in beach profile steepening and berm formations. Overall, changes in beach volume and area were small, indicating that this artificial beach is relatively stable. The embayed layout following the natural coastal configuration appears to be effective in retaining nourished sediment on the beach. This work highlights the need to consider pocket embayed beaches in three dimensions, as traditional transect studies can overlook the three-dimensional behaviour. This study also highlighted the wider potential of UAVs and SfM for studies of high-resolution elevation changes on natural and artificial beaches, as well as for coastal monitoring of beach nourishment. Paper gathers information on Condition Assessment Programme (CAP), which is implemented by classification societies to thoroughly assess condition of tankers and bulk carriers by inspection of engine and hull. It is voluntary programme, mostly participated by tankers and bulk carriers which are fifteen and more years old and today less present on the market. Special focus will be on ultrasonic measurement of thickness of ship's plates which is most significant indicator on condition of older vessels. After all measuring is done, data is compared with classification society rules and condition of hull and machinery will be assessed. This kind of inspection provides owners of older ships proof that despite age their ships are equally capable of conducting sea voyage. The authors analyse the number of ship arrivals in the port of Rijeka to gain a better insight into their age. Furthermore, the authors advocate ultrasonic thickness measurement for the purpose of reducing hazards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EMOTIONAL competence ,HIGH school teachers ,SECONDARY school teachers ,EFFECTIVE teaching ,MORAL attitudes - Abstract
Teaching is among other things an emotional endeavour. Being emotionally competent has tacitly become a prerequisite for the teaching profession, thus raising the question of teachers' actual emotional competence as well as manners of acquiring these skills. This paper aims to discuss how emotions relate to the teaching profession and also provides results of a small scale study conducted on a sample of 144 teachers from secondary schools in the City of Rijeka regarding the teachers' assessment of their emotional competence. The results of the study point to overall high assessments of teachers' emotional competence which is an encouraging result but could also point to the idea Hargreaves (2000) introduced, which entails the notion that expressing positive emotions and being emotionally competent has become a moral commitment and a professional standard for the teachers which makes them feel obliged to live up to those standards. CLIMATE change models , *ATMOSPHERIC models , *HEATING load , *GLOBAL warming , *CITIES & towns - Abstract
This paper examines the expected future heat load in five Croatian cities: Dubrovnik, Zadar, Rijeka, Zagreb, and Osijek. The heat load is estimated by temperature-related climate indices and mean, maximum and minimum daily temperatures obtained by climate simulations using two different regional climate models (DHMZ-RegCM4 and SMHI-RCA4) with a horizontal resolution of 12.5 km, forced with two global climate models (EC-EARTH and MPI-ESMMR/LR) for two different greenhouse gas concentration scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). By comparing these variables for the period 2041-2070 with respect to the current climate (defined as that of the period 1991-2020), a significant increase in mean, maximum and minimum temperatures was observed in all analysed combinations of regional and global climate models for all analysed cities. Although there is a difference in results depending on the combination of regional and global models, the largest increase is mainly found in the warm part of the year (April-October), with the strongest warming of Dubrovnik and Rijeka. Due to similar trends in minimum and maximum temperatures, the trend in the daily temperature range is weak. Under warmer climate conditions, the number of days with a maximum air temperature above 25 ℃ increases in all considered cities (especially in Dubrovnik), as does the number of days with a minimum air temperature exceeding 20 ℃ (especially in Rijeka and Zadar). Furthermore, a reduction in the number of days with maximum and minimum temperatures below 0 ℃ is projected for all cities. Nevertheless, some differences are found between coastal and inland cities caused by local factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HEART valve prosthesis implantation ,AORTIC valve diseases ,HEART valve diseases - Abstract
Aortic disease is the most common form of heart valve disease in developed countries, affecting 3% of the world’s population over the age of 65. The standard method of treating a symptomatic patient is surgical replacement of the valve. In patients with a high risk for surgery, the valve is implanted in a minimally invasive way, with transcatheter approach. This paper will present the success of treating aortic valve disease using the transcatheter method. Due to possibility of implantation via both transapical and transfemoral approaches, the patients featured in this study received valves manufactured by Edwards Lifesciences. We will also present the tasks of the nurse in preparing the patient, the operating room, and the valve itself. The obtained results of this research led to the conclusion that, apart from the duration of hospitalization, there was no statistically significant difference between the transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedure performed with transfemoral approach versus transapical approach at University Hospital Centre Rijeka. The duration of hospitalization in average is significantly shorter in patients who underwent TAVI procedure with transfemoral approach. The condition of the patients according to the New York Heart Association Classification significantly improved in both groups, there was no difference between the groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: More research is needed to consider residents' perceptions prior to hosting large-scale events. This paper contributes new insight on residents' perceptions of placemaking analysed by considering awareness, enthusiasm and participation prior to hosting a large-scale event. Placemaking is becoming increasingly important and this insight can help planners understand how locals perceive change and event planning preparations. Design/methodology/approach: 454 residents of Rijeka, Croatia completed a survey (seven-point Likert scale) of 17 placemaking principles, asked in three ways: (1) how you feel; (2) how you believe people near you feel and (3) if you feel that planning/preparing for ECoC 2020 has made a difference. The data analysis considers socio-demographics and the significance of awareness, enthusiasm and participation as factors affecting residents' perceptions of placemaking. Findings: The study found respondents originally from Rijeka expressed statistically significant higher level of agreement. Where statistically significant differences exist, female respondents expressed statistically significant higher levels of agreement. For six statements, the distribution of results was not similar for all age groups. Awareness and enthusiasm seems to influence placemaking principles to a greater extent than participation in this study, but all have proven to have statistically significant positive impacts on the placemaking principles assessed. Practical implications: Planners need to focus on effective promotional activities aimed at awareness and enhance enthusiasm to help increase perceptions of placemaking and increase local quality of life. Originality/value: explores perceptions of "self" and "how others feel" by assessing principles of placemaking associated with the case of Rijeka. This allows researchers to explore understandings of how people perceive the attitudes of their fellow residents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper estimates the exhaust emissions of marine traffic in the Port of Rijeka based on the ship’s data obtained from the pilot company. The Port of Rijeka is the largest port in Croatia that includes several berthing locations with different terminals. The estimation is made for each of them respecting carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) as well as for the amount of total emissions for the area. The aim is to prepare basic records for estimation and further monitoring with respect to changes in the ongoing environmental regulation and restrictions. This paper will contribute to the overall national strategy of preparing shipping emission inventories for the Republic of Croatia. The estimation method is based on the bottom– up approach widely used in such research that starts with ship characteristics and activities when approaching the port. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FAT ,BODY mass index ,STATURE ,SCHOOL children ,SPORTS for children ,SPORTS instruction - Abstract
Due to the importance of the role of this topic in the lives of children, but also adults, this paper tackles numerous studies that have explored the same issue. The research findings were analyzed with regards to the examined morphological characteristics (body height, body mass, body mass index, skin folds, body fat content) and activities of younger children in the city of Rijeka. The research was conducted in the Elementary School 'Pehlin' and the Elementary School 'Kozala' on a sample of 245 pupils enrolled in the lower four grades. It was found that younger school children in Rijeka have a moderate body mass, but the percentage of body fat in boys and girls suggests increased caution. A comparison between boys and girls in terms of the morphological characteristics resulted in no statistical differences. It has also been confirmed that children engaged in sports activities show better morphological characteristics, lower body mass as well as a lower body mass index, skin folds, and body fat than children who do not play sports. After the established condition, a preventive kinesiological program was proposed as well as advice that should be followed regarding the diet and the manner in which children spend their leisure time. Efficient transportation connectivity between ports and the hinterland is essential for the functioning of the port, especially for container terminals that predominantly rely on road transport. The integration of port and urban traffic flows, particularly in terminals located near cities, has a double impact on the level of service of urban traffic and the efficiency of the port. This paper examines the effects of a newly built container terminal, with a capacity of less than 1 million TEU per year, on urban traffic in Rijeka, Croatia. A microscopic-level simulation method is used together with traffic network modeling design. The research identifies potential bottlenecks or critical elements in the network with lower performance for the current traffic demand and the future growth scenarios of the container traffic. The study's findings contribute to understanding the dynamic characteristics of port and urban traffic flow correlation, crucial for efficient transportation management and sustainable urban development in port cities. GEOGRAPHICAL positions , *INDUSTRIALIZATION - Abstract
Podgorje is in the zone of the overlapping nodal-functional regions of Rijeka and Zadar. Despite its central position in the geographical context of Adriatic Croatia, the Podgorje region is suffering very negative demographic processes and trends because it is an area of poor transportation accessibility. The aim of this research paper is to analyze the interdependency of transport accessibility of Podgorje and the neighboring leading regional centers, as well as the negative demographic processes and trends that have destabilized this region and converted it into a rural periphery of Adriatic Croatia. The processes of littoralization and industrialization of the coast of Podgorje failed, when they should have created the prerequisites for the development of a functional network of settlements, which would have in turn created and kept necessary functions and retained the population. The absence of these processes has led to the demographic decline of the area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Medical history of the city of Rijeka is a rich treasure trove of events, celebrities and valuable innovations in the field of healthcare. The historical development of Rijeka was largely determined by her geopolitical position as a border town with a multicultural population, marked by strong conflicts of interest and numerous identity turmoil. The great exodus of the domicile population of Italian nationality after World War II has significantly changed the social picture of the city. Among many of such esuli (immigrants) were brothers Giovanni (b. 1932) and Abdon (b. 1933) Pamich, whose lives are reminiscent of the fate of many displaced people from Rijeka who were forced to live in exile after the war. After leaving their hometown during the formative years of their childhood, they had successful careers in Italy in the fields of medicine and healthcare. The older brother Giovanni became a successful surgeon and the younger Abdon a psychologist. Along with his positions as the head of general surgery at the Monfalcone and Gorizia Hospitals, Giovanni Pamich was teaching at the University of Trieste. Abdon Pamich collaborated with the best Italian tennis players in the field of sports psychology, and was a psychologist for the Italian handball team. They both practiced athletics, and Abdon Pamich won the silver medal in speed walking at the 1958 European Championships in Sweden and the gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In addition to emphasizing the achievements of the two brothers in the field of medicine, this paper also addresses the position of the migrant, which is highlighted in Robert Covaz’s book “Abdon Pamich, memorie di un marciatore (Rome, 2016), an exciting biography of an emigrant from Rijeka. The paper also explores the concept of thematizing the limits of differences and experiences of migration of Rijeka residents facing the existential issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Liquefied natural gas is imposed as an acceptable transitional solution that enables compliance with legislative environmental requirements. Transportation of gas is provided both to gas pipelines and to ships that have recently been witnessed by an increase in order numbers globally. This kind of interest is accompanied by an increase in the number of loading and unloading terminals which, when selecting the site, must meet both technological and environmental requirements. Environmental impact studies are mandatory, and are also of great interest to the local population. Due to the planned location of the terminal for regasification of natural gas in the Rijeka Bay, this paper analyzes the most common adverse effects on the environment and local residents as well as the possibility of reducing its negative impacts, with special reference to the use of cryogenic energy in endothermic and exothermic technological processes and economic activities. At the same time, it can be shown that it is possible to reduce its adverse effects and produce useful energy, or products which may have significance in changing the perception of the local community. BOOK clubs (Discussion groups) , *METROPOLIS , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *BOARD games , *PUBLIC libraries , *FORUMS - Abstract
Objective. The first objective of this paper was to explore the presence, characteristics and practices of book clubs in the public libraries of large Croatian cities. The second objective was to explore the experiences of book club leaders and their recommendations related to successful activities of book clubs. Methodology. The survey method was used to accomplish the research objectives. Eleven book club leaders in the public libraries of the cities Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Zadar and Pula, were surveyed. Findings. These are some of the research findings: meetings in book clubs are held once a month, they last from one to two hours and the meeting place is usually in the library; the book club members are mostly women; there are certain libraries which do not have a book club for persons of certain ages; the most common activity that takes place in the meetings is book discussion, but other activities are also present from meetings with writers to board games and drawing; the main criteria for selecting books to read are user preferences and availability of books; in majority of reading clubs the members read mostly foreign literature. Practical implications. The paper provides various insights that may be useful to book club leaders, as well as for other interested parties, to improve or initiate book club activities. Originality/value. Essential aspects of the activities of book clubs in the public libraries of the major Croatian cities are presented. A topic that is seldom represented in domestic scientific or professional literature is explored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
