The concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere has been continually monitored since their toxicity became known, whereas nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) and oxy-PAHs (OPAHs), which are derivatives of PAHs by primary emissions or secondary formations in the atmosphere, have gained attention more recently. In this study, a method for the quantification of 18 NPAH and OPAH congeners in the atmosphere based on combined applications of gas chromatography coupled with chemical ionization mass spectrometry is presented. A high sensitivity and selectivity for the quantification of individual NPAH and OPAH congeners without sample preparations from the extract of aerosol samples were achieved using negative chemical ionization (NCI/MS) or positive chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry (PCI-MS/MS). This analytical method was validated and applied to the aerosol samples collected from three regions in Northeast Asia—namely, Noto, Seoul, and Ulaanbaatar—from 15 December 2020 to 17 January 2021. The ranges of the method detection limits (MDLs) of the NPAHs and OPAHs for the analytical method were from 0.272 to 3.494 pg/m3 and 0.977 to 13.345 pg/m3, respectively. Among the three regions, Ulaanbaatar had the highest total mean concentration of NPAHs and OPAHs at 313.803 ± 176.349 ng/m3. The contribution of individual NPAHs and OPAHs in the total concentration differed according to the regional emission characteristics. As a result of the aerosol samples when the developed method was applied, the concentrations of NPAHs and OPAHs were quantified in the ranges of 0.016~3.659 ng/m3 and 0.002~201.704 ng/m3, respectively. Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM 2.5) harbors a diverse microbial community. To assess the ecological dynamics and potential health risks associated with airborne microorganisms, it is crucial to understand the factors influencing microbial communities within PM 2.5. This study investigated the influence of abiotic parameters, including air pollutants, PM 2.5 chemical composition (water-soluble ions and organics), and meteorological variables, on microbial communities in PM 2.5 samples collected in Seoul during the spring season. Results revealed a significant correlation between air pollutants and water-soluble ions of PM 2.5 with microbial α-diversity indices. Additionally, air pollutants exerted a dominant effect on the microbial community structure, with stronger correlations observed for fungi than bacteria, whereas meteorological variables including temperature, pressure, wind speed, and humidity exerted a limited influence on fungal α-diversity. Furthermore, the results revealed specific water-soluble ions, such as SO 4 2−, NO 3 −, and NH 4 +, as important factors influencing fungal α-diversity, whereas K+ negatively correlated with both microbial α-diversity. Moreover, PM 2.5 microbial diversity was affected by organic compounds within PM 2.5 , with fatty acids exhibited a positive correlation with fungal diversity, while dicarboxylic acids exhibited a negative correlation with it. Furthermore, network analysis revealed direct links between air pollutants and dominant bacterial and fungal genera. The air pollutants exhibited a strong correlation with bacterial genera, such as Arthrospira and Clostridium , and fungal genera, including Aureobasidium and Cladosporium. These results will contribute to our understanding of the ecological dynamics of airborne microorganisms and provide insights into the potential risks associated with PM 2.5 exposure. It is imperative to understand the changes of the levels of air pollutants in Northeast Asia with respect to the changes of the emissions of air pollutants. In this study, we analyzed long-term trends of both the chemical composition of fine particles and gaseous species in Seoul, a megacity, and Baengnyeong Island, a background area located in the Yellow Sea of Republic of Korea (South Korea) from 2012 to 2019. Long-term changes of the concentrations of air pollutants were analyzed using the Mann–Kendall trend test and Sen's slope. Since the SO2 emissions in this region have been significantly reduced during last decade, NO3− has become the major species of fine particles instead of SO42−. Seoul and Baengnyeong Island are rich in NH4+ in the atmosphere, and due to the SO2 emission reduction, the balance of ammonia–nitric acid–sulfuric acid has been changed, and the concentration of NO3− has increased. This trend is more obvious in Baengnyeong Island than Seoul due to the lower local emissions in Baengnyeong Island. As a result of this study, it is possible to confirm that concentrations of air pollutants and the majority of aerosols affecting PM2.5 concentrations in Northeast Asia have changed according to the changes in emissions in this region. Background: Epidemiologic studies have suggested that elevated concentrations of particulate matter (PM) are strongly associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, including arrhythmia. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which PM exposure causes arrhythmia and the component that is mainly responsible for this adverse effect remains to be established. In this study, the arrhythmogenicity of mobilized organic matter from two different types of PM collected during summer (SPM) and winter (WPM) seasons in the Seoul metropolitan area was evaluated. In addition, differential effects between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (oxy-PAHs) on the induction of electrophysiological instability were examined. Results: We extracted the bioavailable organic contents of ambient PM, measuring 10 μm or less in diameter, collected from the Seoul metropolitan area using a high-volume air sampler. Significant alterations in all factors tested for association with electrophysiological instability, such as intracellular Ca2+ levels, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and mRNA levels of the Ca2+-regulating proteins, sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ATPase (SERCA2a), Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMK II), and ryanodine receptor 2 (RyR2) were observed in cardiomyocytes treated with PM. Moreover, the alterations were higher in WPM-treated cardiomyocytes than in SPM-treated cardiomyocytes. Three-fold more oxy-PAH concentrations were observed in WPM than SPM. As expected, electrophysiological instability was induced higher in oxy-PAHs (9,10-anthraquinone, AQ or 7,12-benz(a) anthraquinone, BAQ)-treated cardiomyocytes than in PAHs (anthracene, ANT or benz(a) anthracene, BaA)-treated cardiomyocytes; oxy-PAHs infusion of cells mediated by aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) was faster than PAHs infusion. In addition, ROS formation and expression of calcium-related genes were markedly more altered in cells treated with oxy-PAHs compared to those treated with PAHs. Conclusions: The concentrations of oxy-PAHs in PM were found to be higher in winter than in summer, which might lead to greater electrophysiological instability through the ROS generation and disruption of calcium regulation. Two approaches were applied for characterization of organic compounds in the atmospheric aerosols. These were chemical and statistical grouping analysis. We applied chemical group analysis as a new approach using the GC×GC data. Based on the principle of GC×GC, analytes in two dimensional data were divided into 6 chemical group depending on their volatility and polarity. Using this classification standards, all analytes were classified as one of 6 chemical groups, HP-VOC, LP-VOC, HP-SVOC, LP-SVOC, HPNVOC and LP-NVOC. The relationship between the sum of the peak areas of each chemical group with other variables such as the concentrations of OC, EC, OCPOC, OC/EC and OCSOC were studied. However, no apparent relationship was observed. The principle component analysis (PCA) was carried out to find out the relationship among the analytes based on their sources. The OVOCs were dominant compounds in 3 out of 4 factors in summer. In winter, factor 1 was related to secondary organic aerosol and factor 3 was related to primary emission sources. Contribution of liquid water content (LWC) to the levels of the carcinogenic particulate nitro(so) compounds and the chemistry affecting LWC were investigated based on the observation of seven nitrosamines and two nitramines in rural (Seosan) and urban (Seoul) area in South Korea during October 2019 and a model simulation. The concentrations of both the total nitrosamines and nitramines were higher in Seosan (12.48 ± 16.12 ng/m3 and 0.65 ± 0.71 ng/m3, respectively) than Seoul (7.41 ± 13.59 ng/m3 and 0.24 ± 0.15 ng/m3, respectively). The estimated LWC using a thermodynamic model in Seosan (12.92 ± 9.77 μg/m3) was higher than that in Seoul (6.20 ± 5.35 μg/m3) mainly due to higher relative humidity (75 ± 9% (Seosan); 62 ± 10% (Seoul)) and higher concentrations of free ammonia (0.13 ± 0.09 μmol/m3 (Seosan); 0.08 ± 0.01 μmol/m3 (Seoul)) and total nitric acid (0.09 ± 0.07 μmol/m3 (Seosan); 0.04 ± 0.02 μmol/m3 (Seoul)) in Seosan while neither fog nor rain occurred during the sampling period. The relatively high concentrations of the particulate nitrosamines (>30 ng/m3) only observed probably due to the higher LWC (>10 μg/m3) in Seosan. It implies that aqueous phase reactions involving NO 2 and/or uptake from the gas phase enhanced by LWC could be promoted in Seosan. Strong correlation between the concentrations of nitrosodi-methylamine (NDMA), an example of nitrosamines, simulated by a kinetic box model including the aqueous phase reactions and the measured concentration of NDMA in Seosan (R = 0.77; 0.37 (Seoul)) indicates that the aqueous phase reactions dominantly enhanced the NDMA concentrations in Seosan. On the other hand, it is estimated that the formation of nitrosamines by aqueous phase reaction was not significant due to the relatively lower LWC in Seoul compared to that in Seosan. Furthermore, it is presumed that nitramines are mostly emitted from the primary emission sources. This study implies that the concentration of the particulate nitrosamines can be promoted by aqueous phase reaction enhanced by LWC. Oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) are of increasing interest due to their high toxicity. Thirteen particulate PAHs and ten particulate OPAHs were analyzed by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) in atmospheric particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than or equal to a nominal 2.5 μm (PM 2.5) for the period between May 2020 and January 2021 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The mean concentration ten OPAHs (5.49 ± 2.40 ng/m3) was higher than that of thirteen PAHs (3.96 ± 3.36 ng/m3), respectively. The concentration of total OPAHs was high in winter (9.40 ± 2.50 ng/m3) and low in summer (3.58 ± 0.78 ng/m3), showing the same trend with PAHs (9.16 ± 3.30 ng/m3 in winter and 0.62 ± 0.15 ng/m3 in summer). When comparing this study results with the measurement results on 2006 in Seoul, PAHs concentration dropped by 68% while only 22% was reduced for OPAHs. It suggests either improvement of combustion technology, i.e., high temperature combustion process in the region or higher ambient oxidation reaction rates on 2020 than 2006. Major sources and their contributions of PAHs and OPAHs were identified based on correlation analysis and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) modeling. Two cases were carried. Case 1 is for source apportionment for PM 2.5 and case 2 is for OPAHs and PAHs. The number of factors or sources in the two cases was determined as 7 and 4, respectively. The results of the PMF modeling using diagnostic ratios (DRs) in case 1 identified 7 factors; secondary nitrate (23%), secondary sulfate (21%), vehicles (20%), biomass burning (16%), coal combustion (12%), waste incineration (5%), and OPAHs (5,12-NAQ) emission-related (3%). The PMF modeling results in case 2 revealed 4 factors; vehicles (36%), coal combustion (30%), biomass burning (25%), and OPAHs (5,12-NAQ) emission related (9%). Abstract: Due to its proximity to the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) (40 km from Seoul proper to North Korea) and the characteristics of energy consumption (coal and biomass burning as major primary energy sources), air pollutants emitted from North Korea are likely to influence the air quality in the SMA. To understand the transport of air pollutants emitted from North Korea, backward trajectories arriving in Seoul were estimated and classified into four cases depending on which area the trajectories predominantly passed through for the sampling days between 2002 and 2003. The ambient data of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed for the samples. Then, based on the contribution of biomass burning calculated by the chemical mass balance (CMB) model applied and the influence of air pollutants'' emissions from North Korea to SMA is semi-quantified. The result was verified by the spatial and seasonal variations of the PAH emission in China based on the previous works. It is estimated that the influence from North Korea on the particulate PAHs concentration in Seoul was up to 20% of the observed values. Abstract: Six unique OH-reaction products of naphthalene and phenanthrene were detected and quantified in ambient PM2.5 collected in Seoul, Korea between 2006 and 2007. The range of annual average concentrations of six reaction products, 2-formylcinnamaldehyde, phthalic acid, phthalide, dibenzopyranone, 9-fluorenone, and 1,2-naphthalic anhydride extended from 2.45 to 49.9 ng m−3 and all of these values were higher than the average concentration of single particulate PAH compounds in Seoul, Korea. The seasonal pattern of six reaction products generally showed higher concentrations in winter months than in summer months. This indicates that the formation of these compounds by atmospheric photochemical reactions is significant both in winter and summer and that enhanced primary sources and higher particle to gas partitioning activity due to lower ambient temperature may contribute to the high concentrations of these compounds in the winter months in Seoul, Korea. The high correlation of the formation of 2-formylcinnamladehyde and dibenzopyranone with the estimated SOC concentration, suggests that the formation of SOA from gas phase PAH reactions in the real atmospheres is significant. Also, we suggest that (E)-2-formylcinnamaldehyde and dibenzopyranone could be used as unique indicators for the atmospheric oxidative reactions of naphthalene and phenanthrene, respectively. Abstract: To identify the ambient characteristics of a mega city in Northeast Asia, the particulate PAHs in TSP were measured for 18months at Seoul, the capital of Korea. The average concentration of the ambient particulate PAHs at Seoul for the sampling period was 26.6±28.4ngm−3 with the range from 1.57 to 166ngm−3. It showed winter maxima and summer minimum mainly due to the increased fuel consumption in winter both at Seoul and Northeast Asia. The ambient level of PAHs in Seoul was lower than the cities in China but higher than other urban areas. The stronger relationship between the ambient particulate PAHs concentrations and the inverse of the ambient temperature (1/T) at Seoul compared to Gosan, a background site in Korea and the difference of the distributions of BeP/BaP ratios at Seoul and Gosan might be due to the characteristics of Seoul which was governed by both transport from outside and local emissions. Due to their important roles in salt-producing acid-base reactions, new particle formation (NPF), and as precursors in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) producing reactions, the atmospheric concentrations of particulate volatile amines (dimethylamine (DMA), ethylamine, diethylamine (DEA), propylamine, and butylamine) at Seoul were analyzed and evaluated. To quantify the presence of volatile amines in particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than or equal to a nominal 2.5 μm (PM 2.5), an efficient and rapid analytical method based on in-matrix ethyl chloroformate (ECF) derivatization followed by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was developed and validated using gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) in the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The annual mean concentration of the total 5 target amines was 5.56 ± 2.76 ng/m3 and the seasonal difference was small. The concentrations of particulate amines measured in this study were lower than those observed in Zongludak, Turkey, Nanjing, China, and Jeju, Korea but slightly higher than that reported in Kobe, Japan. The concentrations of the nitrosamines (nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA)), and of the nitramines (dimethylnitramine (DMN) and diethylnitramine (DEN)) measured along with those of the target amines were used in a simple linear regression analysis. It indicates the contribution of DMA to the formation of NDMA in all seasons (except the fall) and DEA to the formation of NDEA in the summer, while DMA and DEA did not significantly contribute to the formation of nitramines. • Simple and efficient analytical method for atmospheric amines was established. • The annual mean concentration of the sum of 5 amines was 5.56 ± 2.76 ng/m3. • Amines could contribute to the formation of nitrosamines. • Amines did not significantly contribute to the formation of nitramines. Due to proximity and the characteristics of energy usage and resultant emissions of air pollutants, it has been speculated that biomass fuel burning activities in North Korea would affect the air quality in Seoul significantly. Based on the measured levels of levoglucosan and organic carbon (OC) in Seoul, the three-dimensional potential source contribution function (3D-PSCF) method was applied to estimate the degree of contribution of biomass fuel burning activities in North Korea to the air quality in Seoul. Relative importance of biomass fuel burning consumed in neighboring regions is estimated in the order of North Korea, Northeast China, North China, and East China. The 3D-PSCF method evaluates that biomass fuel burning activities, compared to other sources of OC, in Northeast China and North Korea highly contribute to the air quality in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). Relative importance as a source area of air pollutants between North Korea and Northeast China should be further validated. • 3-D PSCF, an extended PSCF method was applied to identify major source areas of the observed levoglucosan in Seoul. • It is estimated that biomass fuel burning activities in North Korea and North & Northeast & East China contribute to the air quality in the SMA. • North Korea and Northeast China are evaluated as important potential source areas for the observed biofuel burning OC in Seoul. The contribution of ozonation to the formation of particulate nitrosodi-methylamine (NDMA) in the aqueous aerosol phase was investigated using measurement data from 2018 in Seoul, Republic of Korea and a box model. The correlation between the NDMA concentration and aerosol liquid water content and box model results showed that aqueous aerosol phase reactions, including nitrosation and ozonation, might contribute to the formation of NDMA. The concentration of NDMA and the ratio of O 3 /dimethylamine exhibited a negative correlation, suggesting that the contribution of ozonation to NDMA formation may not be significant. Furthermore, when the daily concentration of NDMA exceeded 10 ng/m3, the pH was 3.96 ± 0.48, indicating that the impact of ozonation on NDMA concentration might not be significant. To quantitatively investigate the contribution of ozonation, the ozonation mechanism that forms NDMA was included in the box model developed in our previous study. The model results showed that the ozonation contributed to the ambient concentration of NDMA (7.9 ± 3.8% (winter); 1.9 ± 3.0% (spring); 10.0 ± 0.77% (summer); 3.6 ± 7.3% (autumn)). It is estimated that the relatively higher O 3 /NO x ratio in summer (1.63 ± 0.69; 0.64 ± 0.52 (winter); 1.14 ± 0.92 (spring); 0.52 ± 0.54 (autumn)) could enhance ozonation and that relatively lower pH in summer (2.2 ± 0.4; 5.3 ± 1.2 (winter); 3.9 ± 1.2 (spring); 3.9 ± 0.7 (autumn)) could hinder nitrosation compared to that in other seasons. Seventy three individual organic compounds in the atmospheric particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than or equal to a nominal 10 μm (PM 10 ) over Seoul were identified and quantified from April 2010 to April 2011 using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). These organic compounds were classified into five groups, n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), mono-carboxylic acids, di-carboxylic acids (DCAs), and sugars based on their chemical structures and properties. The organic compounds showed higher seasonal average concentrations from fall to winter than from spring to summer due to source strength, except some organic compounds among mono-carboxylic acids, DCAs, sugars such as undecanoic acid, methylmalonic acid, and fructose. Through qualitative data analysis using seasonal concentration variations and relevant diagnostic parameters, it was found that (1) anthropogenic sources such as combustion of fossil fuel and biomass burning attributed more to the formation of the organic aerosols than biogenic sources, and (2) the ambient level of n-alkanes, PAHs, and some compounds of DCAs and sugars was elevated in winter due to the increased primary emissions and larger transport from outside of the organic compounds in winter. Aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and trimethylbenzene (BTEX) are known to contribute the most to the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in an urban atmosphere and their representation in chemical transport models (CTM) is still uncertain. In this study, we evaluated the model representation of BTEX concentrations and their seasonal difference at Beijing and Seoul using the GEOS-Chem CTM and ground observations from the Fine particle Research Initiative in East Asia considering National Differences (FRIEND) project in winter and summer. The model captured different levels of observed BTEX at Beijing and Seoul, where benzene (BENZ) was comparable and toluene + ethylbenzene (TOLU) and xylenes + trimethylbenzenes (XYLE) were higher at Seoul. The observed seasonal variations of BTEX were similar at both sites, with benzene being higher in winter and TOLU and XYLE being higher in summer. However, the magnitude and seasonal variation of TOLU at Seoul and BENZ at Beijing were not reproduced by the model. TOLU was underestimated in both seasons at Seoul especially in summer due to the underestimation of emission rates and evaporative emission being not included in the current emission inventory. At Beijing, BENZ was underestimated especially in winter and showed no seasonal variation which was different from the observations. Underestimated benzene emission rates or missing sources of it cause discrepancies between observed and modeled benzene concentrations at Beijing. • The observed toluene and xylenes were higher in summer while benzene was higher in winter at Beijing and Seoul. • The evaporative emission of toluene at Seoul needs to be considered in the model to reproduce the observed seasonal variation of toluene. • Benzene concentration at Beijing is underestimated likely due to a low bias in emissions from Beijing's own or upwind region. Nitrosamines and nitramines are groups of chemical compounds containing nitroso (N-NO) and nitro (N-NO 2) functional groups, respectively. They exert detrimental effects on our health. Simultaneous analysis of 7 nitrosamines and 3 nitramines present in atmospheric particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to the nominal value of 2.5 μm (PM 2.5) at Seoul in the winter of 2018 was undertaken using gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS-MS). The daily average concentrations of nitrosamines and nitramines during the sampling period were 9.75 ± 17.77 ng/m3 (0.06–54.72 ng/m3) and 0.68 ± 0.56 ng/m3 (0.08–2.40 ng/m3), respectively. The concentrations of nitramines in the atmosphere were reported in this study for the first time and could not be compared. Among the nitrosamines, nitrosodi-methylamine (NDMA) concentrations observed in this study were high and comparable to that observed at the area with emission sources (Zonguldak, Turkey) and higher than that in an urban area (North Kensington, UK). Concentrations of other nitrosamines such as nitrosodi-ethylamine (NDEA), nitrosodi-butylamine (NDBA), nitroso-piperidine (NPIP), nitroso-pyrrolidine (NPYR), and nitrosodi-propylamine (NDPA) were similar to or lower than those noted in urban areas in the previous studies. In order to determine the relative importance of primary emissions and secondary reactions, statistical analyses such as correlation and multivariance analysis were carried out. Multivariance analysis results showed that secondary reaction might affect to the formation of the nitrosamines and nitramines in the atmosphere more than the primary emission. Understanding the geographic source contributions by particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is important for the Korean peninsula due to its downwind location from source areas. Regional influence of particulate PAHs was previously identified using diagnostic ratios applied to mobile source dominated roadside sampling data (Kim et al., 2012b). However, no study has yet been conducted to quantify the regional source contributions. We applied a multivariate receptor modeling tool to identify and quantify the regional source contributions to particulate PAHs in Seoul. Sampling of roadside particulate PAHs was conducted in Seoul, Korea for four years between May 2005 and April 2009, and data analysis was performed with a new multivariate receptor model, Solver for Mixture Problem (SMP). The SMP model identified two sources, local mobile source and transported regional source, and quantified their source contributions. Analysis of the particulate PAHs data reveals three types of episodic periods: a high regional source contribution period with one case, a high mobile source contribution period with three cases, and a normal contribution period with eight cases. Four-year average particulate PAHs source contributions from the two sources are 4.6 ng m −3 and 10.7 ng m −3 for regional and mobile sources, respectively and equivalent to 30% and 70% of the total estimated contribution from each of these sources.
