The article offers a guide on identifying immunodeficiency. HIV infection is cited as the most common cause of secondary immunodeficiency. The epidemiology of immunodeficiency and the high rate of delay in diagnosis in Great Britain are tackled. Patients suffering from severe, persistent, unusual or recurrent infections are recommended to be considered for immunodeficiency investigation. The common first-line investigation comprises of full blood count, immunoglobulins, serum complement C3/C4, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) test (FISH).
