We study an inverse scattering problem associated with a Schr\"odinger system where both the potential and source terms are random and unknown. The well-posedness of the forward scattering problem is first established in a proper sense. We then derive two unique recovery results in determining the rough strengths of the random source and the random potential, by using the corresponding far-field data. The first recovery result shows that a single realization of the passive scattering measurements uniquely recovers the rough strength of the random source. The second one shows that, by a single realization of the backscattering data, the rough strength of the random potential can be recovered. The ergodicity is used to establish the single realization recovery. The asymptotic arguments in our study are based on the theories of pseudodifferential operators and microlocal analysis., Comment: 26 pages

This paper is concerned with the uniqueness of inverse acoustic scattering problem for cavities with the modulus of the near-fields. With the aid of the reference ball technique and the superpositions of two point sources as the incident waves, we rigorously prove that the location and shape of the cavity as well as its boundary condition can be uniquely determined by the modulus of near-fields at an admissible surface. To our knowledge, this is the first uniqueness result in inverse cavity scattering problems with phaseless near-field data. An inverse scattering problem for the 3D acoustic equation in time domain is considered. The unknown spatially distributed speed of sound is the subject of the solution of this problem. A single location of the point source is used. Using a Carleman Weight Function, a globally strictly convex cost functional is constructed. A new Carleman estimate is proven. Global convergence of the gradient projection method is proven. Numerical experiments are conducted.

We are concerned with the direct and inverse scattering problems associated with a time-harmonic random Schr\"odinger equation with unknown source and potential terms. The well-posedness of the direct scattering problem is first established. Three uniqueness results are then obtained for the corresponding inverse problems in determining the variance of the source, the potential and the expectation of the source, respectively, by the associated far-field measurements. First, a single realization of the passive scattering measurement can uniquely recover the variance of the source without the a priori knowledge of the other unknowns. Second, if active scattering measurement can be further obtained, a single realization can uniquely recover the potential function without knowing the source. Finally, both the potential and the first two statistic moments of the random source can be uniquely recovered with full measurement data. The major novelty of our study is that on the one hand, both the random source and the potential are unknown, and on the other hand, both passive and active scattering measurements are used for the recovery in different scenarios.

This paper is concerned with the inverse source problem of reconstructing an unknown acoustic excitation from phaseless measurements of the radiated fields away at multiple frequencies. It is well known that the non-uniqueness issue is a major challenge associated with such an inverse problem. We develop a novel strategy to overcome this challenging problem by recovering the radiated fields via adding some reference point sources as extra artificial sources to the inverse source system. This novel reference source technique requires only a few extra data, and brings in a simple phase retrieval formula. The stability of this phase retrieval approach is rigorously analyzed. After the reacquisition of the phase information, the multi-frequency inverse source problem with recovered phase information is solved by the Fourier method, which is non-iterative, fast and easy to implement. We propose a new numerical method to reconstruct the isotropic electrical conductivity from measured restricted Dirichlet-to-Neumann map data in electrical impedance tomography (EIT) model. "Restricted Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map data" means that the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary data for EIT are generated by a point source running either along an interval of a straight line or along a curve located outside of the domain of interest. We "convexify" the problem via constructing a globally strictly convex Tikhonov-like functional using a Carleman Weight Function. In particular, two new Carleman estimates are established. Global convergenceto the correct solution of the gradient projection method for this functional is proven. This work is concerned with the inverse source problem of locating multiple multipolar sources from boundary measurements for the Helmholtz equation. We develop simple and effective sampling schemes for location acquisition of the sources with a single wavenumber. Our algorithms are based on some novel indicator functions whose indicating behaviors could be used to locate multiple multipolar sources. The inversion schemes are totally "direct" in the sense that only simple integral calculations are involved in evaluating the indicator functions. Rigorous mathematical justifications are provided and extensive numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness, robustness and efficiency of the proposed methods., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

This paper is concerned with a conceptual gesture-based instruction/input technique using electromagnetic wave detection. The gestures are modelled as the shapes of some impenetrable or penetrable scatterers from a certain admissible class, called a dictionary. The gesture-computing device generates time-harmonic electromagnetic point signals for the gesture recognition and detection. It then collects the scattered wave in a relatively small backscattering aperture on a bounded surface containing the point sources. The recognition algorithm consists of two stages and requires only two incident waves of different wavenumbers. The location of the scatterer is first determined approximately by using the measured data at a small wavenumber and the shape of the scatterer is then identified using the computed location of the scatterer and the measured data at a regular wavenumber. We provide the corresponding mathematical principle with rigorous analysis. Numerical experiments show that the proposed device works effectively and efficiently.

This work is concerned with an inverse problem of identifying the current source distribution of the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations from multi-frequency measurements. Motivated by the Fourier method for the scalar Helmholtz equation and the polarization vector decomposition, we propose a novel method for determining the source function in the full vector Maxwell's system. Rigorous mathematical justifications of the method are given and numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the method., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures

We are concerned with the inverse scattering problem of extracting the geometric structures of an unknown/inaccessible inhomogeneous medium by using the corresponding acoustic far-field measurement. Using the intrinsic geometric properties of the so-called interior transmission eigenfunctions, we develop a novel inverse scattering scheme. The proposed method can efficiently capture the cusp singularities of the support of the inhomogeneous medium. If further a priori information is available on the support of the medium, say, it is a convex polyhedron, then one can actually recover its shape. Both theoretical analysis and numerical experiments are provided. We are concerned with a novel sensor-based gesture input/instruction technology which enables human beings to interact with computers conveniently. The human being wears an emitter on the finger or holds a digital pen that generates a time harmonic point charge. The inputs/instructions are performed through moving the finger or the digital pen. The computer recognizes the instruction by determining the motion trajectory of the dynamic point charge from the collected electromagnetic field measurement data. The identification process is mathematically modelled as a dynamic inverse source problem for time-dependent Maxwell's equations. From a practical point of view, the point source should be assumed to move in an unknown inhomogeneous background medium, which models the human body and the surroundings. Moreover, a salient feature is that the electromagnetic radiated data are only collected in a limited aperture. For the inverse problem, we develop, from the respectively deterministic and stochastic viewpoints, a dynamic direct sampling method and a modified particle filter method. Both approaches can effectively recover the motion trajectory. Rigorous theoretical justifications are presented for the mathematical modelling and the proposed recovery methods. This paper is concerned with the invisibility cloaking in electromagnetic wave scattering from a new perspective. We are especially interested in achieving the invisibility cloaking by completely regular and isotropic mediums. Our study is based on an interior transmission eigenvalue problem. We propose a cloaking scheme that takes a three-layer structure including a cloaked region, a lossy layer and a cloaking shell. The target medium in the cloaked region can be arbitrary but regular, whereas the mediums in the lossy layer and the cloaking shell are both regular and isotropic. We establish that there exists an infinite set of incident waves such that the cloaking device is nearly-invisible under the corresponding wave interrogation. The set of waves is generated from the Maxwell-Herglotz approximation of the associated interior transmission eigenfunctions. We provide the mathematical design of the cloaking device and sharply quantify the cloaking performance., Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures

This paper is concerned with the mathematical design of a novel input/instruction device using a moving emitter. The emitter generates a point source and can be installed on a digit pen or worn on the finger of the human being who wants to interact/communicate with the computer. The input/instruction can be recognized by identifying the motion trajectory of the emitter performed by the human being from the collected wave field data. The identification process is modelled as an in- verse source problem where one intends to identify the trajectory of a moving point source. There are several salient features of our study which distinguish our result from the existing ones in the literature. First, the point source is moving in an inhomogeneous background medium, which models the human body. Second, the dynamical wave field data are collected in a limited aperture. Third, the recon- struction method is independent of the background medium, and it is totally direct without any matrix inversion. Hence, it is efficient and robust with respect to the measurement noise. We consider the electromagnetic scattering from a convex polyhedral PEC or PMC obstacle due to a time-harmonic incident plane wave. It is shown that the modulus of the far-field pattern in the backscattering aperture possesses a certain local maximum behavior. Using the local maximum indicating phenomena, one can determine the exterior unit normal directions, as well as the face areas, of the front faces of the obstacle. Then we propose a recovery scheme of reconstructing the obstacle by phaseless backscattering measurements. This work significantly extends our recent study in [12] from two dimensions and acoustic scattering to the much more challenging three dimensions and electromagnetic scattering.

This is the first publication in which an ill-posed Cauchy problem for a quasi- linear PDE is solved numerically by a rigorous method. More precisely, we solve the side Cauchy problem for a 1-d quasilinear parabolc equation. The key idea is to minimize a strictly convex cost functional with the Carleman Weight Function in it. This work concerns the cloaking due to anomalous localized resonance (CALR) in the quasi-static regime. We extend the related two-dimensional studies in [2,10] to the three-dimensional setting. CALR is shown not to take place for the plasmonic configuration considered in [2,10] in the three-dimensional case. We give two different constructions which ensure the occurrence of CALR. There may be no core or an arbitrary shape core for the cloaking device. If there is a core, then the dielectric distribution inside it could be arbitrary.

We propose an inverse scattering scheme of recovering a polyhedral obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n=2,3$, by only a few high-frequency acoustic backscattering measurements. The obstacle could be sound-soft or sound-hard. It is shown that the modulus of the far-field pattern in the backscattering aperture possesses a certain local maximum behavior, from which one can determine the exterior normal directions of the front sides/faces. Then by using the phaseless backscattering data corresponding to a few incident plane waves with suitably chosen incident directions, one can determine the exterior unit normal vector of each side/face of the obstacle. After the determination of the exterior unit normals, the recovery is reduced to a finite-dimensional problem of determining a location point of the obstacle and the distance of each side/face away from the location point. For the latter reconstruction, we need make use of the far-field data with phases. Numerical experiments are also presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
