This article studies the narratives of voices identifying the harrowing aftermath of the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan, and the representations of the contemporary effects of partition in Bapsi Sidhwa's novel Ice Candy Man. The narrative unfolds past experiences through the eyes of different characters and surroundings from different social, political and religious backgrounds. The novel vividly portrays the horror of violence during the partition, as communities that once coexisted peacefully become engulfed in a whirlwind of hatred and bloodshed. Sidhwa's polyphonic narrative experiences reflect the multifaceted nature of violence, from communal riots to personal tragedies creating a poignant portrayal of human suffering and resilience. The theme of partition, violence, and memory permeates throughout the novel, encapsulating the socio-political upheavals that marked the birth of two nations – India and Pakistan. This paper, therefore, attempts to analyse the novel in order to understand the ideas of the 'polyphonic narrative' of Mikhael Bakhtin's theory and many other postcolonial critic's ideas. For portraying the human experience amidst a backdrop of partition and historical turmoil in shaping narratives as presented in the text by applying the theoretical framework of Postcolonial theory. Research suggests that for every suicide as many as hundreds of people are left behind to bear the loss, referred to in the literature as suicide survivors. Part of survivors' difficulty in processing this loss is the negative emotional chaos it engenders; notably stigma, shame, blame, regret, and anger. While suppression and avoidance are commonly used to counteract these responses, some grief and trauma experts have emphasized attending to one's emotions and thoughts, rather than working to stifle them. This phenomenological study carried out with three suicide survivors highlights the capacity of leisure, as understood philosophically, to create opportunities for survivors to lean into their loss and express their grief to transform the suicide event from a tragedy to a more positive renewal. Ovid’s Metamorphoses tells the story of Icarus-his tragic flight with man-made wings, the melting of the wax that bound them, and the ensuing fall to his death. This moment has been immortalized across the arts and through several mediums, but none are more notable than Bruegel’s Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. Described as a “painter for poets,” Bruegel’s work served as inspiration for several writers, with this piece in particular providing the basis for ekphrastic poems by W.H. Auden and William Carlos Williams. Though each of these works has a different focus, the unifying theme is that human tragedy is too often placed on the periphery of notice. Refugee and migration crises has been an integral part of the continuous and successive crises that the world has been experiencing. Media has played a crucial role in shaping public opinion over migration and asylum-seeking. Within this context, this paper aims to discuss Greek media coverage of the migrant shipwreck off the Greek coast of Pylos, in June 2023, in which more than 600 people mostly from Syria, Egypt, and Pakistan are thought to have drowned. Based on data from a quantitative content analysis and a sample of news stories stemming from the online version of five Greek news media outlets, representing diverse political spaces, a broader set of criteria for content analysis, including the absence of refugee and migrant voice in media content, dehumanization, absence of solutions and context, among many others, was used in order to explore how the Greek media framed what has been labeled as one of the deadliest migrant shipwrecks in the Mediterranean. Results revealed (i) frames of dehumanization, (ii) insufficient reporting of injustice and discrimination stemming from (state) structures and practices, and an (iii) overemphasis on migrant smuggling. In the wake of collective trauma and tragedy, artists may be called upon as "second responders" to facilitate healing and grief for a community. In this article, we explain the artists-as-second-responders discourse, including the messaging of artists feeling useful, art as diversion, and art as healing. Then, using an example of student-artists compelled to make sure "the show must go on" at Michigan State University in the days after a mass school shooting, we critique the second-responder discourse by arguing that such messaging may cause more harm to artists and facilitate problematic escapism. We also challenge the "call to serve" and offer recommendations for how, on days after, institutions can respond in more traumainformed and supportive ways. Reconsidering Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman in view of newly discovered textual discrepancies between editions and critical scholarship, this essay makes a necessary intervention in the reading tradition of the rape-fall-punishment triad by shifting the central event of the novel to the murder as it relates to aspects of the novel's religious framework. It argues that Tess's actions are contingent on a critical phrase, "a shining light," that has been suppressed through the novel's complicated publication history and reconnects sections of the plot to restore the significance of tragedy in the novel without explaining that tragedy through her violation. By recovering the religious significance of conversion in the text as crucial to a structure of extralegal justice on which the events of the novel hinge, the essay argues that Tess's crime, rather than serving as mere irony, is motivated by faith and an understanding of justice that illuminates the problem of the uncanny God of the nineteenth century, present through absence. As the salvation plot is brought back into relevance with the marriage plot, the concept of Tess's love as a powerful force that should be able to overcome all is reduced to a failed attempt at epistemic reform. This article explores the extent to which the use of the optical medium of binoculars in Der Condor and Der Hochwald reflects the experience of a paradigmatically new way of seeing. In Der Condor, the refractive power of 'Durchs‐Fernglas‐Schauen' is demonstrated by means of a kaleidoscopic fragmentation of the narrative perspective. The portrayal of the hot air balloon ride at the beginning of the story gives tragic evidence of the loss of the beloved as well as of the loss of an overall sense of perception due to the crossing of gazes that are technically mediated. An emancipatory aspect is expressed in that it is a female figure who becomes aware of the 'transzendentale Obdachlosigkeit' of modern man. The catastrophe perceived technically from a distance in Der Hochwald raises the question of the fundamental possibilities of representation. The experience of seeing, re‐created here from a narratorical point of view, is a dynamic process of de‐ and restructuring storytelling itself, anticipating moments of non‐representational strategies in the literary modernism of the twentieth century. Joanna Baillie (1762–1851) came to fame in 1798 with the first volume of her Plays on the Passions, which included her theoretical account of drama, including tragedy. This article reconstructs Baillie's theory of tragedy and shows how the theory informs the design of the Plays on the Passions. For Baillie, all human beings have powerful and dangerous passions that we need to learn to regulate. Tragedy can help with this and can serve an educative purpose by presenting us with narratives in which the protagonists repeatedly fail to check the growth of a particular passion, such as jealousy or hatred. We witness this passion gain more and more hold over the character's mind until they are destroyed. This offers a warning and motivates us to watch out for the growth of our own passions and keep them in check. Baillie's theory of tragedy is original and combines a moral orientation, a voluntarist belief in free will, and optimism about the human condition. For her, the sufferings undergone by tragic characters could have been avoided had the characters made better choices. Thus the message of tragedy is not that suffering is inescapable but that suffering can be minimized if we cultivate self-knowledge and emotional self-control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The partition of India on the dissolution of British Raj into two dominions is known to have been violent, polarizing and caused large-scale loss of life (about two million) and an unprecedented migration of 14 million people between the two dominions, India and Pakistan. It is not known how well the then scientific community covered this man-made disaster, and the response of the international community with aid. Methodology: A systematic review was conducted using different electronic databases of PubMed, Econlit, United Nations resolutions, Government of India websites, and Google Scholar for the period January 1947 to December 1951 on the impact of the partition of the Indian sub-continent, and to identify the international response toward this humanitarian crisis. Result: We could locate only twenty-four publications. Partition not only caused monumental humanitarian suffering, but also contributed to food deficits, adverse impact on trade and industries, national income and harmed public health. In contrast, no significant attention was expressed by the international scientific community or the United Nations, or aid provided during this catastrophic event. Conclusion: The review demonstrates the apathy by the contemporary international scientific research community on the social as well as economic damage caused by the partition of India. We suggest that the international scientific and research community should play the role of vigilante and fact finder to unearth the facets of mass human tragedy and its long-term consequences so that global consciousness is awakened, and help and aid flows when it is most needed. The Japanese novel, Kokoro (1914), offers a profound insight into early 20th-century Japanese society encompassing history, politics, and literature. Although this novel has been extensively explored in literary and translation studies, the convergence remains underexplored. This study advocates integrating literary criticism with translation practice for a more faithful representation of narratives. Applying trauma/PTSD studies theory, it meticulously analyzes Kokoro, particularly examining the English and Chinese renditions of the pivotal term (danpan; negotiation)". The methodology involves constructing a trilingual database, incorporating the Japanese source text and seven translations in English and Chinese. By scrutinizing specific passages, the study delves into trauma-related responses and behaviors, revealing their impact on long-lasting changes in personality and relationships. Emphasis is placed on the translation of key terms, preserving cultural and linguistic nuances. This innovative approach advances both literary criticism and translation theory, emphasizing psychological elements for a nuanced portrayal of characters' states of mind. The study underscores the significance of trauma narratives in comprehending personal and historical traumas, asserting that translators of trauma literature must blend theoretical knowledge with social responsibility. They serve as "secondary witnesses," entrusted with accurately transmitting traumatic stories between languages, fostering empathy, and preventing the repetition of tragedies in history. This contribution is one of the first 'field-based' personal observations, when ethnographic research in the region is now almost impossible, especially for Western researchers. It sketches ethnographically local experiences of the war, describing a divided society in distress, which 'galvanises nostalgia' (Balzer 2021) for the past amid the grim reality around. The essay attempts to show in particular, what soldiers from Buryatia are experiencing at war, including the supernatural, and to describe the reflections of their family members and their communities on how the war has changed their lives, on the tragedies of human losses, frustrations, fears for an uncertain future, and hopes that the war soon would be over. Moreover, Russia's war in Ukraine is producing many narratives of cultural difference, when 'Buryats', whether that term indicates ethnic belonging or a regional identity, are now seen as a distinct social group separate from the majority of the population of the Russian Federation on the basis of their cultural and historical traits often based on imaginaries deploying the much-mythologised figure of the Mongolian nomad. This article explores the management of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil radicalizing Foucault's notion of governmentality. While dominant scholarship has been interpreting the human tragedy of the outbreak in Brazil in terms of necropolitics and Bolsonaro's populist rhetoric, the present work highlights other dimensions. It shows that the management of the pandemic was deployed to govern the conduct of the Brazilian population. This article detects novel economies of medical truth, obedience, and salvation. It also examines the struggles and (bio)political resistance of Brazil's vulnerable communities. While academic debates interpreted those movements in terms of care and compassion, this article highlights their radical political aspects. Extending Foucault's notion of "counter-conducts," this article reveals how those collectives shaped new forms of medical dissent. This manuscript stages the West and China as civilizations rooted in contrasting myths. The Western leading paradigm is the Faustian Man whose ambition created modernity and the tragedy of progress. It is a tragedy already condemned by history but, being Faust's construction site unfinished, it is a tragedy that everyone seems keen to re-enact. On the other hand, China conceived the concept of stability, rather than competition, the key for a durable success. Behind Zheng He's voyages and the Ming Dynasty's choice to go westbound, rather than eastbound, lies an anti-Faustian attitude, the essence of Chinese philosophy, to be read not as anti-modernity but the attempt to shape an alternative modernity. The concept of the post-apocalypse, a cultural imagination of nuclear energy, the temporality of trauma, and time travel are linked herein in order to arrive at a political reading of the Dark series. This show is a commentary on the phasing out of nuclear power in Germany in response to the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. Two readings of this series are proposed: a meditation on the possible futures of the world (the possibility of reparative action and the post-apocalypse) and a traumatic narrative (the concepts of trauma and loss are crucial to understanding the plot, while both the visuals and the plot borrow from posttraumatic cinema). Social media platforms evolved into significant arenas for comprehending crises, hardships, violence, and murder. This paper contributes to the discourse within the intersection of social media and crime by delving into the narratives through which people pour meaning online into tragedies with personal significance. When people experience life-changing events, some go through a process of "sense-making" to fully understand the events and their implications, and reach closure. Processes of "sense-making" become increasingly public and collaborative through stories people tell on social media. Still, a dearth of literature exists that systematically examines these stories as conduits for infusing meaning into tragedies. This article bridges this gap by analyzing the narratives emanating from Facebook groups commemorating Tair Rada and advocating for justice for Roman Zadorov, who was convicted with her murder. These narratives not only challenge Zadorov's culpability but also recount the sequence of events leading to the tragedy. Furthermore, they delve into the identity and motivations of the perpetrator(s), resuscitating neglected lines of police investigation and occasionally introducing alternative narratives. To establish their narratives' credibility, authors employ a range of strategies such as integrating source materials, employing categorical language, and cultivating an atmosphere of personal witnessing or knowledge acquisition. "A Murderous Midsummer: The Western Rising of 1549" by Mark Stoyle is a gripping account of the English Reformation. The book focuses on the events in Sampford Courtenay, Devon, where an argument over the Book of Common Prayer escalated into a widespread protest and violent conflict between rebels and the crown. Stoyle challenges the view that the rebels were "blood-crazed class warriors" and instead presents them as ordinary people seeking to protect their religious traditions. The book provides new insights into the motivations and military power of the rebels, highlighting their significance in the broader history of state authority and religious reform in sixteenth-century England. Shinzo Abe, Japan's former and longest-serving prime minister was assassinated on 8 July 2022. As the world expressed sorrow of the human tragedy, nationalists in China were celebrating the disappearance of a hardline Chinese hawk with great enthusiasm. When a Chinese journalist sobbed for Abe's death during a live report of the assassination, the surging anti-Japan sentiment exploded and soon developed into a hashtag-based nationalist protest attacking Abe and the journalist. Drawing from cyber nationalism and hashtag activism literature, the author coined a concept 'hashtag nationalism' to analyze this protest, the interactions between state-led nationalism and popular nationalism, and the role of digital media in the public-state relation. This article also generalized three affordances of hashtag – interconnectivity, intertextuality, and interdiscursivity – to approach the role of social media in digital activism from a relational perspective. All human experience is organized in the dynamic space between necessity and contingency, and these values play a significant role in therapeutic issues such as human encounters, trauma, racism, physical disease, accidents and minority experience. How and in what form do contingency and necessity emerge in our therapeutic works? How can we help our patients to live with human tragedy and the inevitable contingencies and necessities of the human world? Through a case vignette of a traumatized female patient, I attempt to explore how the therapist's recognition of being a player-witness—the recognition that "I could have been my patient"—can help both the therapist and patient to share the transience of the world and hope for the future. I conclude that the sense of surprise—that comes with the therapist's realization that there is no reason why the trauma experienced by the patient could not have happened to them—allows the therapist, and patient, to be open to many other possibilities in their lives. Haddis Alemayehu's classic novel ፍቅር እስከ መቃብር (Fikir iske Mekabir , Love until Death , 1958 Ethiopian Calendar, 1965/6 Gregorian Calendar), is lauded by critics as a pioneering realist and modern novel in the Amharic literary tradition. My aim in this article is to scrutinize this take by examining the novel's narrative temporalities and modes through a dialectical lens. This leads me to argue that the novel's realism is marked by contradiction and fluidity. Specifically, the emergence of realism in Fikir iske Mekabir is accompanied by its breakdown while the realist narrative mode is accompanied by the traditional narrative modes of epic and hagiography (or, gedl). This hitherto unexamined textual and intertextual quality of Haddis's novel reveals new insights into its thematic content regarding modernity, tradition, and social reproduction under the old Ethiopian order. This paper examines the concept of the sports celebrity in the context of Scotland with a specific focus on the impact of localised national discourses on their formation. Relatively few Scottish athletes have become celebrities perhaps because traditional Scottish cultural values have militated against the cultural elevation even of the most successful individuals. Having explained the cultural context, the paper proceeds to consider the role of Scotland's golfing pioneers. There follows an examination of the significance of personal tragedy in the construction of other Scottish sports celebrities, with a particular emphasis on football based on nuanced, culturally specific and personal insights into Scottish society. The final section of the paper examines the celebrity status of a tennis player, Andy Murray, arguably Scotland's greatest ever athlete. Tragedy, political acuity and a wry sense of humour have been combined in Murray's celebrityhood which has, in turn, been consistently influenced by his dealings with the relationship between Britishness and Scottishness. The main theoretical contribution of the paper is situated in the argument that, although typologies of sports celebrity can be useful, we should not lose sight of the significance of local specificities, with the celebrities who are discussed belonging to three distinct eras in Scottish political development. Though many of its central insights about the dynamics of the Senecan self are already there in Braden ([7]), Perry is a brilliant close reader and he offers genuinely new insights into Shakespeare's plays through an intense engagement with the dynamics of Senecan tragedy. This is a reading of tragedy that is perfectly compatible with Cherbuliez on Medea, with the caveat that Cherbuliez is also interested in reconstructing the historical moment of neoclassical tragedy and the specific interventions of seventeenth-century treatments of Medea. In his wonderfully engaging new book on Shakespeare, I Shakespeare and Senecan Tragedy i , Curtis Perry acknowledges Hutson's influence but argues that Senecan tragedy provides an equally important model for the interiority of Shakespeare's tragic characters. But Perry's attention to the psychological as well as political dynamics of Senecanism and his virtuoso close readings of Seneca's plays make for a rich analysis of Shakespeare's Senecan borrowings. Nietzsche's interest in tragedy continues throughout his work. And yet scholarship on Nietzsche's account of tragedy has focused almost exclusively on his first book, The Birth of Tragedy – a work which is in many ways discontinuous with his more mature philosophical views. In this paper, I aim to illuminate Nietzsche's post-Birth of Tragedy views on tragedy by setting them in the context of a particular historical conversation. Ever since Plato banished the tragic poets from the kallipolis, various philosophers have attempted to respond to his challenge to offer a 'defense of poetry'. What Nietzsche offers, I argue, is a distinctive form of response to Plato's challenge. I show how Nietzsche takes seriously Plato's worries, and even ends up in partial agreement with him: tragedy is not (unqualifiedly) valuable; it can be spiritually dangerous. Key to Nietzsche's account is a distinction he draws between two types of tragic audience. For the 'lower types', tragedy is – as Plato feared – dangerous. For the 'higher types', however, tragedy can act as a regenerative force. Finally, I discuss a distinctive form of value that tragedy makes available to a modern audience: tragedy can act as a stimulus towards the process of the revaluation of values. In the play Macbett, written in 1972, Ionesco mischievously turns Shakespeare’s classic work, the canonised story of Macbeth inside out and creates an absurd parody. According to Shakespeare the mechanisms of history and power are simple and transparent, and even terribly ridiculous if viewed from the right distance. Ionesco achieves this “right distance” using the instruments of the theatre of the absurd. The paper aims to analyse the two plays in comparison to determine if the elements of absurdity and comedy already emerge in the original play and seeks answers to the following question: is Ionesco’s intention solely to amuse or does he wrap the tragedy of humankind in an absurd appearance to more precisely highlight the story’s message? Where did Ionesco get the idea, and which themes and aspects does he emphasize from the Shakespearean play? "Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland" by Patrick Radden Keefe is a well-researched and well-written book that explores the post-1969 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland. The book focuses on the abduction and murder of Jean McConville, a widow and mother of ten, by Republican paramilitaries. Keefe's journalistic background allows him to write in an emotive but effective fashion, vividly describing the cruelty of McConville's separation from her children. The book also delves into the lives of Marian and Dolours Price, two prominent members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), and their involvement in bombings and hunger strikes. Keefe's narrative contrasts with the denial of PIRA membership by Gerry Adams, a recurring theme throughout the book. The book also touches on the controversial academic project at Boston College, which aimed to establish an oral history of the 'Troubles' through interviews with participants. Tragedy and Philosophy: A Parallel History: by Agnes Heller, edited by John Grumley, David Roberts, and Pauline Johnson, Leiden, Brill, 2021, 125 pp., €90.00 (cloth) As with tragedy, Heller has a very specific idea of what counts as philosophy: "Just as tragedy was replaced by serious dramas ... so the holistic transparent philosophical systems were replaced by philosophical fragments" (17). While tragedy in the bad-news sense is universal, tragedy in Heller's sense is a literary form that has developed only under particular historical conditions - namely, when "the times are out of joint", in Shakespeare's phrase. Evolutionary analyses suggest that the human social brain and sociality appeared together. The two fundamental tools that accelerated the concurrent emergence of the social brain and sociality include learning and plasticity. The prevailing core idea is that the primate brain and the cortex in particular became reorganised over the course of evolution to facilitate dynamic adaptation to ongoing changes in physical and social environments. Encouraged by computational or survival demands or even by instinctual drives for living in social groups, the brain eventually learned how to learn from social experience via its massive plastic capacity. A fundamental framework for modeling these orchestrated dynamic responses is that social plasticity relies upon neuroplasticity. In the present article, we first provide a glimpse into the concepts of plasticity, experience, with emphasis on social experience. We then acknowledge and integrate the current theoretical concepts to highlight five key intertwined assumptions within social neuroscience that underlie empirical approaches for explaining the brain-social dynamics. We suggest that this epistemological view provides key insights into the ontology of current conceptual frameworks driving future research to successfully deal with new challenges and possible caveats in favour of the formulation of novel assumptions. In this paper, we will attempt to analyze the reasons behind suicide and human self-sacrifice involving the salvation of polis in Euripides' fragmented tragedy Erechtheus, written in the last quarter of the 5th century B. C. It is our purpose to provide evidence of the complex perspective that the Athenian dramatist had on such topics, especially considering the display of his talents in a play that reveals the impossibility of reconciliating antagonistic visions on voluntary self-sacrifice. In that sense, we intend to present the existence of a conceptual problem, as well as pose questions concerning voluntary selfsacrifice which continue to linger beyond Ancient times. On the eve of Halloween on 29 October 2022, a crowd was killed in a narrow alley of the South Korean capital. Known for its diversity and ethnic communities, Itaewon is a melting pot of cultures and the mediating place to enjoy a new culture, and aptly so, for the celebration of Halloween. The common response to the tragedy was that of mystery and disbelief. However, the real mystery is why none of the local district offices, police, and business associations, who have governed and managed festivals in the area, had prepared safety measures nor anticipated a tragedy of this nature. After the incident, a series of demonstrations have been held by bereaved families and civil societies to demand a thorough investigation, legal punishment of those responsible, and protective advancements. Although relevant authorities have expressed regret publicly, there was neither an official apology nor sincere condolences to the victims and their families. In the case of the Halloween tragedy in Itaewon, the mourning is politicized and delayed as debates on whether public mourning is deserving have started. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resilience is the ability to adapt successfully in the face of difficulty, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress. Subjective well-being is an individual's own appraisal of their level of happiness and life satisfaction. The aim of the present study was to explore the constructs of Resilience and Subjective Well-being among Indian adolescents (13 to 19 years). The sample consisted of 60 high school and undergraduate students from across the country. The research design followed for this particular study was a quantitative correlational design. Measures of Brief Resilience Scale and BBC Subjective Well-being Scale (BBC-SWB) were used. Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to be +0.5055. This was found significant at 0.01 level. Thus, the results indicated a moderate positive correlation between resilience and subjective well-being of adolescents. The t-test value for resilience between high school students and undergraduates was 0.67, pointing towards an insignificant value. The t-test value for subjective well-being between high school students and undergraduates was 0.50, which was not significant. Further analysis was performed on the scores of the sub-domains of BBC-SWB scale, namely psychological well-being, relationship domain and physical health and well-being, and no significant differences were found between high school and undergraduate students on the sub-domains. Purpose: The new reality of the ongoing war in Europe, in addition to the enormity of the unimaginable human tragedy, has generated serious problems of various categories, especially in the field of energy security management. Thus, there is a hypothesis that in the current situation, the implementation of the idea of sustainable development in terms of energy development and maintenance of measures for achieving climate goals, may be significantly hampered and slowed down. Based on the analysis, it was determined that there are legitimate concerns about the existence of obstacles to the process of achieving sustainable development in the context of interest. Design/methodology/approach: Research related to this issue consisted of a literature analysis of available texts. This article is purely theoretical in nature and is based on a literature analysis. For the purpose of it, three groups of keywords were developed to reflect their diverse characteristics, in order to identify the state of the current literature covering the knowledge of energy management in the energy crisis associated with the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Findings: The issues raised in this article are merely an exemplification of the problems concerning further energy development and the implementation of the concept of environmental sustainability caused by the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. From a sketchy analysis of the available information, it can be deduced that, on the one hand, the effect of this aggression on the realisation of the concept of sustainable development may be an acceleration of, for example, decarbonisation, but, on the other hand, it is a very complex problem, as it may trigger a crisis whose scale and effects we are not yet able to determine. Originality/value: The article deals with new problems emerging in the space of energy management and the implementation of environmental sustainability in the context of armed conflict in Europe.
