Wireless power transfer (WPT) technologies hold promise for enhancing device autonomy, particularly for energy-limited IoT systems. This paper presents experimental results on coherent and non-coherent transmit diversity approaches for WPT, tested in the near field using the Techtile testbed. We demonstrate that a fully synchronized beamfocusing system achieves a 14 dB gain over non-coherent transmission, consistent with the theoretical 14.9 dB gain for a 31-element array. Additionally, phase alignment errors below 20{\deg} result in less than 1 dB of gain loss, while errors exceeding 40{\deg} lead to losses over 3 dB. These findings suggest that phase coherency requirements for WPT can be relaxed, and that scaling the number of antennas is a promising strategy for improving power transfer efficiency.

External disturbances exciting a mechanical resonator can be exploited to gain information on the environment. Many of these interactions manifest as momentum kicks, such as the recoil of residual gas, radioactive decay, or even hypothetical interactions with dark matter. These disturbances are often rare enough that they can be resolved as singular events rather than cumulated as force noise. While high-Q resonators with low masses are particularly sensitive to such momentum kicks, they will strongly excite the resonator, leading to nonlinear effects that deteriorate the sensing performance. Hence, this paper utilizes optimal estimation methods to extract individual momentum kicks from measured stochastic trajectories of a mechanical resonator kept in the linear regime through feedback control. The developed scheme is illustrated and tested experimentally using a pre-stressed SiN trampoline resonator. Distributed beamforming is a key enabler to provide power wirelessly to a massive amount of energy-neutral devices (ENDs). However, without prior information and fully depleted ENDs, initially powering these devices efficiently is an open question. This work investigates and assesses the feasibility of harvesting sufficient energy to transmit a backscatter pilot signal from the END, which can be then used for coherent downlink transmission. We experimentally evaluated adaptive single-tone and multi-tone signals during initial charging. The results indicate that the response time for ENDs with unknown locations can extend to several tens of seconds. Notably, the adaptive single-tone excitation shows, among others, better performance at lower transmit power levels, providing a faster response. Extremely large-scale antenna array (ELAA) systems emerge as a promising technology in beyond 5G and 6G wireless networks to support the deployment of distributed architectures. This paper explores the use of ELAAs to enable joint localization, synchronization and mapping in sub-6 GHz uplink channels, capitalizing on the near-field effects of phase-coherent distributed arrays. We focus on a scenario where a single-antenna user equipment (UE) communicates with a network of access points (APs) distributed in an indoor environment, considering both specular reflections from walls and scattering from objects. The UE is assumed to be unsynchronized to the network, while the APs can be time- and phase-synchronized to each other. We formulate the problem of joint estimation of location, clock offset and phase offset of the UE, and the locations of scattering points (SPs) (i.e., mapping). Through comprehensive Fisher information analysis, we assess the impact of bandwidth, AP array size, wall reflections, SPs and phase synchronization on localization accuracy. Furthermore, we derive the maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator, which optimally combines the information collected by all the distributed arrays. To overcome its intractable high dimensionality, we propose a novel three-step algorithm that first estimates phase offset leveraging carrier phase information of line-of-sight (LoS) paths, then determines the UE location and clock offset via LoS paths and wall reflections, and finally locates SPs using a null-space transformation technique. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in distributed architectures supported by radio stripes (RSs) -- an innovative alternative for implementing ELAAs -- while revealing the benefits of carrier phase exploitation and showcasing the interplay between delay and angular information under different bandwidth regimes.

We develop a feedback strategy based on optimal quantum feedback control for Gaussian systems to maximise the likelihood of steady-state entanglement detection between two directly interacting masses. We employ linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control to engineer the phase space dynamics of the two masses and propose Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR)-type variance minimisation constraints for the feedback to facilitate unconditional entanglement generation. This scheme allows for stationary entanglement in parameter regimes where strategies based on total energy minimisation ($cooling$) would fail. This feedback strategy, applied to the system of two masses driven out-of-thermal equilibrium [arXiv:2408.06251] enables unconditional entanglement generation under realistic experimental conditions.

Protecting data in memory from attackers continues to be a concern in computing systems. CHERI is a promising approach to achieve such protection, by providing and enforcing fine-grained memory protection directly in the hardware. Creating trust for the entire system stack, however, requires a gap-free verification of CHERI's hardware-based protection mechanisms. Existing verification methods for CHERI target the abstract ISA model rather than the underlying hardware implementation. Fully ensuring the CHERI security guarantees for a concrete RTL implementation is a challenge in previous flows and demands high manual efforts. This paper presents VeriCHERI, a novel approach to security verification. It is conceptionally different from previous works in that it does not require any ISA specification. Instead of checking compliance with a golden ISA model, we check against well-established global security objectives of confidentiality and integrity. Fully covering these objectives, VeriCHERI uses as few as four unbounded properties to exhaustively prove or disprove any vulnerability. We present an advanced thermal response model for micro- and nanomechanical systems in photothermal sensing, designed to balance speed and precision. Our model considers the two time constants of the nanomechanical element and the supporting chip, triggered by photothermal heating, enabling precise photothermal input signal estimation through Kalman filtering. By integrating heat transfer and noise models, we apply an adaptive Kalman filter optimized for FPGA systems in real-time or offline. This method, used for photothermal infrared (IR) spectroscopy with nanomechanical resonators and a quantum cascade laser (QCL) in step-scan mode, enhances response speed beyond standard low-pass filters, reducing the effects of drift and random walk. Analytical calculations show the significant impact of the thermal expansion coefficients' ratio on the frequency response. The adaptive Kalman filter, informed by the QCL's input characteristics, accelerates the system's response, allowing rapid and precise IR spectrum generation. The use of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and PSD analysis for system identification further refines our approach, promising fast and accurate nanomechanical photothermal sensing.

Distributed multiple-input multiple-output (D-MIMO) is a promising technology for simultaneous communication and positioning. However, phase synchronization between multiple access points in D-MIMO is challenging and methods that function without the need for phase synchronization are highly desired. Therefore, we present a method for D-MIMO that performs direct positioning of a moving device based on the delay-Doppler characteristics of the channel state information (CSI). Our method relies on particle-filter-based Bayesian inference with a state-space model. We use recent measurements from a sub-6 GHz D-MIMO OFDM system in an industrial environment to demonstrate near-centimeter accuracy under partial line-of-sight (LoS) conditions and decimeter accuracy under fully obstructed LoS., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted at IEEE SPAWC 2024

Many concepts for future generations of wireless communication systems use coherent processing of signals from many distributed antennas. The aim is to improve communication reliability, capacity, and energy efficiency and provide possibilities for new applications through integrated communication and sensing. The large bandwidths available in the higher bands have inspired much work regarding sensing in the mmWave and sub-THz bands; however, the sub-6 GHz cellular bands will still be the main provider of wide cellular coverage due to the more favorable propagation conditions. In this paper, we present a measurement system and results of sub-6 GHz distributed MIMO measurements performed in an industrial environment. From the measurements, we evaluated the diversity for both large-scale and small-scale fading and characterized the link reliability. We also analyzed the possibility of multistatic sensing and positioning of users in the environment, with the initial results showing a mean-square error below 20 cm on the estimated position. Keeping the batteries on the shelf: this is the holy grail for low-cost Internet of Things (IoT) nodes. In this paper we study the potential of radio frequency (RF)-based wireless power transfer implementing coherent beamforming with many antennas to realize this ambitious target. We optimize the deployment of the antennas to charge electronic shelf labels (ESLs), considering actual regulatory constraints. The results confirm the feasibility to create power spots that are sufficient to keep the high density of battery-less devices operational.

Many high-energy-physics (HEP) simulations for the LHC rely on Monte Carlo using importance sampling by means of the VEGAS algorithm. However, complex high-precision calculations have become a challenge for the standard toolbox, as this approach suffers from poor performance in complex cases. As a result, there has been keen interest in HEP for modern machine learning to power adaptive sampling. While previous studies have shown the potential of normalizing-flow-powered neural importance sampling (NIS) over VEGAS, there remains a gap in accessible tools tailored for non-experts. In response, we introduce Z\"uNIS, a fully automated NIS library designed to bridge this divide, while at the same time providing the infrastructure to customise the algorithm for dealing with challenging tasks. After a general introduction on NIS, we first show how to extend the original formulation of NIS to reuse samples over multiple gradient steps while guaranteeing a stable training, yielding a significant improvement for slow functions. Next, we introduce the structure of the library, which can be used by non-experts with minimal effort and is extensivly documented, which is crucial to become a mature tool for the wider HEP public. We present systematic benchmark results on both toy and physics examples, and stress the benefit of providing different survey strategies, which allows higher performance in challenging cases. The threat of hardware Trojans (HTs) in security-critical IPs like cryptographic accelerators poses severe security risks. The HT detection methods available today mostly rely on golden models and detailed circuit specifications. Often they are specific to certain HT payload types, making pre-silicon verification difficult and leading to security gaps. We propose a novel formal verification method for HT detection in non-interfering accelerators at the Register Transfer Level (RTL), employing standard formal property checking. Our method guarantees the exhaustive detection of any sequential HT independently of its payload behavior, including physical side channels. It does not require a golden model or a functional specification of the design. The emergence of sixth-generation (6G) networks has spurred the development of novel testbeds, including sub-THz networks, cell-free systems, and 6G simulators. To maximize the benefits of these systems, it is crucial to make the generated data publicly available and easily reusable by others. Although data sharing has become a common practice, a lack of standardization hinders data accessibility and interoperability. In this study, we propose the Dataset Storage Standard (DSS) to address these challenges by facilitating data exchange and enabling convenient processing script creation in a testbed-agnostic manner. DSS supports both experimental and simulated data, allowing researchers to employ the same processing scripts and tools across different datasets. Unlike existing standardization efforts such as SigMF and NI RF Data Recording API, DSS provides a broader scope by accommodating a common definition file for testbeds and is not limited to RF data storage. The dataset format utilizes a hierarchical structure, with a tensor representation for specific experiment scenarios. In summary, DSS offers a comprehensive and flexible framework for enhancing the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) in 6G testbeds, promoting open and efficient data sharing in the research community.

Microarchitectural timing side channels have been thoroughly investigated as a security threat in hardware designs featuring shared buffers (e.g., caches) or parallelism between attacker and victim task execution. However, contradicting common intuitions, recent activities demonstrate that this threat is real even in microcontroller SoCs without such features. In this paper, we describe SoC-wide timing side channels previously neglected by security analysis and present a new formal method to close this gap. In a case study on the RISC-V Pulpissimo SoC, our method detected a vulnerability to a previously unknown attack variant that allows an attacker to obtain information about a victim's memory access behavior. We introduce two new extensions to the beam search algorithm based on conformal predictions (CP) to produce sets of sequences with theoretical coverage guarantees. The first method is very simple and proposes dynamically-sized subsets of beam search results but, unlike typical CP procedures, has an upper bound on the achievable guarantee depending on a post-hoc calibration measure. Our second algorithm introduces the conformal set prediction procedure as part of the decoding process, producing a variable beam width which adapts to the current uncertainty. While more complex, this procedure can achieve coverage guarantees selected a priori. We provide marginal coverage bounds for each method, and evaluate them empirically on a selection of tasks drawing from natural language processing and chemistry., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The importance of preventing microarchitectural timing side channels in security-critical applications has surged in recent years. Constant-time programming has emerged as a best-practice technique for preventing the leakage of secret information through timing. It is based on the assumption that the timing of certain basic machine instructions is independent of their respective input data. However, whether or not an instruction satisfies this data-independent timing criterion varies between individual processor microarchitectures. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology to formally verify data-oblivious behavior in hardware using standard property checking techniques. The proposed methodology is based on an inductive property that enables scalability even to complex out-of-order cores. We show that proving this inductive property is sufficient to exhaustively verify data-obliviousness at the microarchitectural level. In addition, the paper discusses several techniques that can be used to make the verification process easier and faster. We demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed methodology through case studies on several open-source designs. One case study uncovered a data-dependent timing violation in the extensively verified and highly secure IBEX RISC-V core. In addition to several hardware accelerators and in-order processors, our experiments also include RISC-V BOOM, a complex out-of-order processor, highlighting the scalability of the approach.

Conformal regression provides prediction intervals with global coverage guarantees, but often fails to capture local error distributions, leading to non-homogeneous coverage. We address this with a new adaptive method based on rescaling conformal scores with an estimate of local score distribution, inspired by the Jackknife+ method, which enables the use of calibration data in conformal scores without breaking calibration-test exchangeability. Our approach ensures formal global coverage guarantees and is supported by new theoretical results on local coverage, including an a posteriori bound on any calibration score. The strength of our approach lies in achieving local coverage without sacrificing calibration set size, improving the applicability of conformal prediction intervals in various settings. As a result, our method provides prediction intervals that outperform previous methods, particularly in the low-data regime, making it especially relevant for real-world applications such as healthcare and biomedical domains where uncertainty needs to be quantified accurately despite low sample data., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

This paper deals with propagation and channel modeling for physically large arrays. The focus lies on acquiring a spatially consistent model, which is essential, especially for positioning and sensing applications. Ultra-wideband, synthetic array measurement data have been acquired with large positioning devices to support this research. We present a modified multipath channel model that accounts for a varying visibility of multipath components along a large array. Based on a geometric model of the measurement environment, we analyze the visibility of specular components. We show that, depending on the size of the reflecting surface, geometric visibility and amplitude estimates obtained with a super-resolution channel estimation algorithm show a strong correspondence. Geometric environment information aids future distributed radio infrastructures in providing services, such as ultra-reliable communication, positioning, and wireless power transfer (WPT). An a priori known environment model cannot always be assumed in practice. This paper investigates the capabilities of detecting specularly reflecting surfaces in a bistatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar setup operating at sub-10 GHz frequencies. While rough surfaces generate diffuse reflections originating from their actual position, flat surfaces act like "mirrors," causing directive reflections that virtually originate "behind" them. Despite these propagation characteristics, we can estimate the locations of flat metal walls from reflections at their surface using synthetic aperture (SA) measurements. The performance gain achievable by exploiting this environment information is analyzed by evaluating WPT capabilities in a geometry-based beamforming setup. We show that it is possible to predict channel state information (CSI) with a geometric channel model. Our geometry-based beamformer suffers an efficiency loss of only 1.1dB compared with a reciprocity-based beamformer given perfect CSI.

Multiple concepts for future generations of wireless communication standards utilize coherent processing of signals from many distributed antennas. Names for these concepts include distributed MIMO, cell-free massive MIMO, XL-MIMO, and large intelligent surfaces. They aim to improve communication reliability, capacity, as well as energy efficiency and provide possibilities for new applications through joint communication and sensing. One such recently proposed solution is the concept of RadioWeaves. It proposes a new radio infrastructure for distributed MIMO with distributed internal processing, storage, and compute resources integrated into the infrastructure. The large bandwidths available in the higher bands have inspired much work regarding sensing in the mmWave- and sub-THz-bands, however, sub-6 GHz cellular bands will still be the main provider of broad cellular coverage due to the more favorable propagation conditions. In this paper, we present results from a sub-6 GHz measurement campaign targeting the non-stationary spatial channel statistics for a large RadioWeave and the temporal non-stationarity in a dynamic scenario with RadioWeaves. Actively Q-switched lasers are widely used tools which are required to produce stable output pulse energies for many applications. In this paper, a model-based control concept for actively Q-switched lasers is presented which stabilises their nonlinear pulse-to-pulse dynamics and rejects stochastic disturbances arising from amplified spontaneous emission. The feasibility of the control task is demonstrated to strongly depend on the design of the semi-active prelasing approach. In this paper, we investigate the manipulation of quasi-1D Bose gases that are trapped in a highly elongated potential by optimal control methods. The effective meanfield dynamics of the gas can be described by a one-dimensional non-polynomial Schr\"odinger equation. We extend the indirect optimal control method for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation by Winckel and Borzi (2008) to obtain necessary optimality conditions for state and energy cost functionals. This approach is then applied to optimally compress a quasi-1D Bose gase in an (optical) box potential, i.e., to find a so-called short-cut to adiabaticity, by solving the optimality conditions numerically. The behavior of the proposed method is finally analyzed and compared to simple direct optimization strategies using reduced basis functions. Massive antenna arrays form physically large apertures with a beam-focusing capability, leading to outstanding wireless power transfer (WPT) efficiency paired with low radiation levels outside the focusing region. However, leveraging these features requires accurate knowledge of the multipath propagation channel and overcoming the (Rayleigh) fading channel present in typical application scenarios. For that, reciprocity-based beamforming is an optimal solution that estimates the actual channel gains from pilot transmissions on the uplink. But this solution is unsuitable for passive backscatter nodes that are not capable of sending any pilots in the initial access phase. Using measured channel data from an extremely large-scale MIMO (XL-MIMO) testbed, we compare geometry-based planar wavefront and spherical wavefront beamformers with a reciprocity-based beamformer, to address this initial access problem. We also show that we can predict specular multipath components (SMCs) based only on geometric environment information. We demonstrate that a transmit power of 1W is sufficient to transfer more than 1mW of power to a device located at a distance of 12.3m when using a (40x25) array at 3.8GHz. The geometry-based beamformer exploiting predicted SMCs suffers a loss of only 2dB compared with perfect channel state information.

Radio stripes (RSs) is an emerging technology in beyond 5G and 6G wireless networks to support the deployment of cell-free architectures. In this paper, we investigate the potential use of RSs to enable joint positioning and synchronization in the uplink channel at sub-6 GHz bands. The considered scenario consists of a single-antenna user equipment (UE) that communicates with a network of multiple-antenna RSs distributed over a wide area. The UE is assumed to be unsynchronized to the RSs network, while individual RSs are time- and phase-synchronized. We formulate the problem of joint estimation of position, clock offset, and phase offset of the UE and derive the corresponding maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator, both with and without exploiting carrier phase information. To gain fundamental insights into the achievable performance, we also conduct a Fisher information analysis and inspect the theoretical lower bounds numerically. Simulation results demonstrate that promising positioning and synchronization performance can be obtained in cell-free architectures supported by RSs, revealing at the same time the benefits of carrier phase exploitation through phase-synchronized RSs.

We present our new experimental and theoretical framework which combines a broadband superluminescent diode (SLED/SLD) with fast learning algorithms to provide speed and accuracy improvements for the optimization of 1D optical dipole potentials, here generated with a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD). To characterize the setup and potential speckle patterns arising from coherence, we compare the superluminescent diode to a single-mode laser by investigating interference properties. We employ Machine Learning (ML) tools to train a physics-inspired model acting as a digital twin of the optical system predicting the behavior of the optical apparatus including all its imperfections. Implementing an iterative algorithm based on Iterative Learning Control (ILC) we optimize optical potentials an order of magnitude faster than heuristic optimization methods. We compare iterative model-based offline optimization and experimental feedback-based online optimization. Our methods provide a new route to fast optimization of optical potentials which is relevant for the dynamical manipulation of ultracold gases., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Interpretability of deep learning is widely used to evaluate the reliability of medical imaging models and reduce the risks of inaccurate patient recommendations. For models exceeding human performance, e.g. predicting RNA structure from microscopy images, interpretable modelling can be further used to uncover highly non-trivial patterns which are otherwise imperceptible to the human eye. We show that interpretability can reveal connections between the microscopic appearance of cancer tissue and its gene expression profiling. While exhaustive profiling of all genes from the histology images is still challenging, we estimate the expression values of a well-known subset of genes that is indicative of cancer molecular subtype, survival, and treatment response in colorectal cancer. Our approach successfully identifies meaningful information from the image slides, highlighting hotspots of high gene expression. Our method can help characterise how gene expression shapes tissue morphology and this may be beneficial for patient stratification in the pathology unit. The ability to manipulate clouds of ultra-cold atoms is crucial for modern experiments on quantum manybody systems and quantum thermodynamics as well as future metrological applications of Bose-Einstein condensate. While optical manipulation offers almost arbitrary flexibility, the precise control of the resulting dipole potentials and the mitigation of unwanted disturbances is quite involved and only heuristic algorithms with rather slow convergence rates are available up to now. This paper thus suggests the application of iterative learning control (ILC) methods to generate fine-tuned effective potentials in the presence of uncertainties and external disturbances. Therefore, the given problem is reformulated to obtain a one-dimensional tracking problem by using a quasicontinuous input mapping which can be treated by established ILC methods.
