Abstract

There is an urgent need to improve the infrastructure supporting the reuse of scholarly data. A diverse set of stakeholders-representing academia, industry, funding agencies, and scholarly publishers-have come together to design and jointly endorse a concise and measureable set of principles that we refer to as the FAIR Data Principles. The intent is that these may act as a guideline for those wishing to enhance the reusability of their data holdings. Distinct from peer initiatives that focus on the human scholar, the FAIR Principles put specific emphasis on enhancing the ability of machines to automatically find and use the data, in addition to supporting its reuse by individuals. This Comment is the first formal publication of the FAIR Principles, and includes the rationale behind them, and some exemplar implementations in the community.

4. Transparency in conducting and reporting research: A survey of authors, reviewers, and editors across scholarly disciplines

Abstract

Calls have been made for improving transparency in conducting and reporting research, improving work climates, and preventing detrimental research practices. To assess attitudes and practices regarding these topics, we sent a survey to authors, reviewers, and editors. We received 3,659 (4.9%) responses out of 74,749 delivered emails. We found no significant differences between authors', reviewers', and editors' attitudes towards transparency in conducting and reporting research, or towards their perceptions of work climates. Undeserved authorship was perceived by all groups as the most prevalent detrimental research practice, while fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, and not citing prior relevant research, were seen as more prevalent by editors than authors or reviewers. Overall, 20% of respondents admitted sacrificing the quality of their publications for quantity, and 14% reported that funders interfered in their study design or reporting. While survey respondents came from 126 different countries, due to the survey's overall low response rate our results might not necessarily be generalizable. Nevertheless, results indicate that greater involvement of all stakeholders is needed to align actual practices with current recommendations.

Abstract

Peer-reviewed, scholarly journals play a critical role in disseminating biomedical research. Scientific publications must be reported and disseminated according to particular best practice standards in order to be of use to clinicians, other researchers, and patients. For example, published research should be properly indexed and archived so that it can be found and preserved over time. Several calls have been made for academic journals to become more transparent, including opening up the peer-review process and making study data publicly available. To address this call for increased transparency, we want to develop a publicly available digital journal transparency tool that can assist different stakeholders including the public, researchers, and publishers to ascertain information about how a journal operates and which best practices it meets. The aim of this particular research study is to determine the needs and preferences for a digital transparency tool from the publishing community.

Abstract

An STM Working Group on Image Alteration and Duplication Detection has been working on best-practice recommendations that outline a structured approach to support editors and others applying image integrity screening as part of pre-publication quality control checks or post-publication investigation of image and data integrity issues at scholarly journals, books, preprint servers, or data repositories. It provides principles and a three-tier classification for different types of image and data aberrations commonly detected in image integrity screens of figures in research papers and for a consideration of impact on the scholarly study; it also recommends actions journal editors may take to protect the scholarly record. With these recommendations, the STM Working Group aims to contribute a consistent, structured and efficient framework for handling image integrity issues both within and between journals and publishers. The framework should support editors in safeguarding research integrity and fortifying the scientific process for the benefit of the scientific community. The recommendations are open for comments until October 31st. The final recommendations, in which we will attempt to process all suggestions and recommendation, will be presented at the STM Innovations Seminar on December 7th. 16. Journals' instructions to authors: A cross-sectional study across scientific disciplines

Abstract

In light of increasing calls for transparent reporting of research and prevention of detrimental research practices, we conducted a cross-sectional machine-assisted analysis of a representative sample of scientific journals' instructions to authors (ItAs) across all disciplines. We investigated addressing of 19 topics related to transparency in reporting and research integrity. Only three topics were addressed in more than one third of ItAs: conflicts of interest, plagiarism, and the type of peer review the journal employs. Health and Life Sciences journals, journals published by medium or large publishers, and journals registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) were more likely to address many of the analysed topics, while Arts & Humanities journals were least likely to do so. Despite the recent calls for transparency and integrity in research, our analysis shows that most scientific journals need to update their ItAs to align them with practices which prevent detrimental research practices and ensure transparent reporting of research.

Abstract

Es besteht dringender Bedarf, die Infrastruktur für die Nachnutzung wissenschaftlicher Daten zu verbessern. Verschiedene Stakeholder aus Hochschulen, Industrieunternehmen, Forschungsförderern und wissenschaftlichen Verlagen haben sich zusammengeschlossen, um gemeinsam einen präzise gefassten Satz von messbaren Prinzipien zu formulieren und zu unterstützen. Diese Prinzipien, die wir als FAIR-Data-Prinzipien bezeichnen, sollen als Leitlinie für die Verbesserung der Nachnutzbarkeit von Datenbeständen dienen. Im Unterschied zu Peer-Initiativen, deren Fokus auf menschlichen Wissenschaftler*innen liegt, richten die FAIR-Prinzipien ein besonderes Augenmerk darauf, Maschinen das automatische Auffinden und die Verwendung von Daten zu erleichtern und somit eine Wiederverwendung durch Menschen zu unterstützen. Dieser Kommentar stellt die erste offizielle Veröffentlichung der FAIR-Prinzipen dar. Er beinhaltet die ihnen zu Grunde liegenden Überlegungen und beispielhaft einige exemplarische Implementierungen innerhalb der Community. Die vorliegende deutsche Übersetzung des Dokuments entstand im Rahmen des Verbundprojektes EcoDM mit der Förderung des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) unter dem Förderkennzeichen 16DWWQP.

There is an urgent need to improve the infrastructure supporting the reuse of scholarly data. A diverse set of stakeholders-representing academia, industry, funding agencies, and scholarly publishers-have come together to design and jointly endorse a concise and measureable set of principles that we refer to as the FAIR Data Principles. The intent is that these may act as a guideline for those wishing to enhance the reusability of their data holdings. Distinct from peer initiatives that focus on the human scholar, the FAIR Principles put specific emphasis on enhancing the ability of machines to automatically find and use the data, in addition to supporting its reuse by individuals. This Comment is the first formal publication of the FAIR Principles, and includes the rationale behind them, and some exemplar implementations in the community.
