Weedy rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the most problematic weed in rice fields due to the few control management alternatives to control it, because of the genetic similarity with the crop. Different cropping systems (regarding soil preparation before sowing) have been used as options to control the persistence and emergence of the weed seedbank. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the longevity and vertical distribution of weedy rice seeds in the soil seedbank after 22 years of different rice cropping systems. Data was analyzed as a two-way factorial, with cropping systems carried out for 22 years [no-tillage (NT), conventional tillage (CT), wet direct-seeded (WDS)] as one factor and sampling depth (0-2, 2-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm) as the other factor. The number of whole and deteriorated seeds per m-2 were assessed, as well as the viability (%). No effect between the systems were detected up to 5 cm, however at 5-10 cm CT and WDS showed higher amount of seeds, and WDS at 10-20 cm. As the sampling depth increased, NT showed fewer amount of seeds, while less reduction of the soil seedbank was observed in WDS. CT and WDS spread viable seeds in the soil profile from 0 to 20 cm depth. After 22 years there are viable weedy rice seeds up to 10 cm of depth in the three cropping systems and there is no difference among them up to 5 cm of depth, demonstrating the serious problem of the seedbank for this species. As plantas necessitam defender-se continuamente do ataque de agentes biológicos e de estresses do ambiente. A imobilidade e a falta de sistema imunológico, como ocorre em animais, fizeram com que as plantas desenvolvessem mecanismos de defesa, em que cada célula possui tanto capacidade de defesa induzida quanto pré-formada. No entanto, esses mecanismos podem ser influenciados pelo uso de herbicidas. A presente revisão objetivou apresentar os efeitos de herbicidas em mecanismos de defesa das plantas contra patógenos, bem como analisar as possíveis conseqüências desse conhecimento no manejo de plantas daninhas e de culturas. Alguns herbicidas influenciam a severidade de doenças, induzindo ou inibindo a síntese de fitoalexinas. Herbicidas do grupo químico difeniléteres geram espécies reativas de oxigênio, as quais mediam a ativação de genes de defesa responsáveis pela síntese de fitoalexinas e também por reação de hipersensibilidade. O uso de subdoses de glyphosate ocasiona efeito contrário, diminuindo a produção de fitoalexinas e aumentando a severidade de doenças. A constatação desses efeitos requer a adoção de estratégias de manejo que minimizem seus impactos negativos ou que se beneficiem desses efeitos, como pode ocorrer quando do uso de bioherbicidas.

A similaridade morfológica existente entre arroz-vermelho e arroz cultivado, associada à prolífica produção de sementes pelo arroz daninho e ao degrane dos grãos com elevado teor de umidade, são fatores que contribuem para sua infestação em lavouras de arroz. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar a supressão da produção de sementes viáveis, pelo arroz-vermelho, a fim de reduzir o seu banco de sementes no solo. Para isso, conduziram-se experimentos no campo e em laboratório, nas estações de crescimento 1997/98 e 1998/99, utilizando-se os herbicidas não-seletivos glyphosate, glufosinate e paraquat, aplicados em duas épocas e em duas doses, e o regulador de crescimento, hidrazida maléica, testado em duas épocas. Incluiu-se uma testemunha que não recebeu aplicação. Utilizou-se a cultivar de arroz IRGA-416, que cresceu na presença de elevada infestação de arroz-vermelho. Os produtos químicos foram aplicados na fase de maturação fisiológica da cultura. As variáveis avaliadas no arroz-vermelho foram: número de colmos sem panícula, com panículas normais e estéreis, esterilidade de espiguetas, produção de sementes, peso médio de grãos e germinação de sementes. Os herbicidas glyphosate, glufosinate e paraquat podem ser usados seletivamente para suprimir a produção de sementes de arroz-vermelho, quando aplicados na fase de maturação do arroz irrigado. A adoção desta tecnologia depende de haver diferença de ciclo do arroz-vermelho em relação ao cultivado, pela utilização de cultivares de arroz de ciclo precoce ou superprecoce.

The differential growth and yield response of plant species to rising carbon dioxide concentrations and climatic change may alter species diversity within biomes. The Pampa Biome in South America is an important grassland biome of agronomic and environmental importance. Acanthostyles buniifolius (Chirca) is one of the most important weeds in natural pasture areas widely distributed in southern South America and can adversely affect livestock production. The current study was designed to identify possible responses of Chirca to CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and drought that would indicate higher adaptation and potential proliferation within the Pampa Biome. Chirca plants were cultivated at two CO2 concentrations (400 (a[CO2]) and 700 (e[CO2]) µmol mol−1) and two water conditions (under water restriction—15% of the pot capacity; and plants without water restriction—pot capacity). Besides growth parameters, we also determined water potential (ѱw), relative water contents (RWC), proline, glycine betaine, total soluble sugars, hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity, chlorophyll A and B, carotenoids and root dry mass (RDM). Plants exposed to e[CO2] are more efficient in water use and have a greater increase in root dry mass, enabling greater adaptation to climate-induced droughts. Among the biochemical changes observed in the plants under drought stress, the accumulation of proline, glycine betaine, and total soluble sugars were the most evident mechanisms allowing plants to tolerate drought stress by osmotic adjustment. Weedy rice (Oryza sp.) is one of the most troublesome global weeds in cultivated rice. Its troublesome status is associated with characteristics such as seed shattering and dormancy, allowing for long‐term reinfestation and persistence in rice fields. However, the role of rising carbon dioxide levels (CO2) and other climate variables on these characteristics has not, to date, been assessed. The current research objectives were to evaluate two aspects related to climatic change, increased CO2 concentration (400 ± 50 μmol mol−1 and 700 ± 50 μmol mol−1) and water management (continuous and alternate‐wetting drying), to assess plant development, seed shattering and seedbank longevity of weedy rice. Our results indicated that elevated CO2 (700 ± 50 μmol mol−1) increased weedy rice growth and biomass, seed shattering and lengthened viability within the seedbank. Water management did not affect weedy rice growth, seed shattering and seed dormancy. These results suggest that in areas where weedy rice is dominant, its seed bank persistence and potential competition may be exacerbated with rising CO2 levels, with negative consequences for rice production.
