According to the well established hierarchical framework for galaxy evolution, galaxies grow through mergers with other galaxies and the LambdaCDM cosmological model predicts that the stellar halos of galaxies are rich in remnants from minor mergers. The Stellar Streams Legacy Survey has provided a first release of a catalogue with a statistically significant sample of stellar streams in the Local Universe that can be used to study minor mergers and test the cosmological models. The main objective is to compare the results of the observations of stellar tidal streams with the predictions of state-of-the-art cosmological simulations regarding the formation of stellar streams up to a redshift z < 0.02, according to the LambdaCDM model. We use the predictions of the cosmological simulations Copernicus Complexio, TNG50 of the IllustrisTNG project and Auriga to generate 225 mock-images of nearby halos at a distance of 70 Mpc, and search for stellar streams. We compare the obtained stream frequency and characteristics with those obtained from the Stellar Streams Legacy Survey. We find good agreement between the results of analysing real images from the Dark Energy Survey and mock-images from cosmological simulations. We obtained predictions for the detection rate of stellar streams to a surface brightness limit of 35 mag arcsec^-2. The cosmological simulations predict that for a surface brightness limit of 32 mag arcsec^-2 a frequency of almost 70% in the detection of streams around galaxies can be achieved., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures

Stellar tidal streams are a key tracer of galaxy evolution and have the potential to provide an indirect means for tracing dark matter. For the Local Group, many diffuse substructures have been identified and their link to galaxy evolution has been traced. However, an analysis of a larger sample is required to better probe the frequency and characteristics of these streams to verify the predictions of the Lambda-CDM model and its implementation in cosmological simulations. For that purpose, we are carrying out the first systematic survey of faint stellar debris from tidally disrupted dwarf satellites around nearby galaxies up to a distance of 100 Mpc. In this paper, we present a catalogue with the results of the first harvest of stellar tidal streams found by visual inspection in deep images of ~ 700 galaxies from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We include a photometric characterisation of the streams obtained by measuring their surface brightnesses and colours. We found a total of 63 streams in our sample at distances between 40 and 100 Mpc, including 59 which were not previously reported. We measured their average surface brightness for the grz bands, to be 28.35+/-0.20, 27.81+/-0.13 and 27.62+/-0.09 mag arcsec^-2, respectively. By applying a statistical analysis to our findings, we obtained a stream detection frequency of 9.1% +/- 1.1% , in agreement with previous studies. We identified stream progenitors in 5-14% of our stream sample, depending on the confidence level. The first catalogue of streams in the Local Universe presented here will be complemented by future stream surveys within the Stellar Stream Legacy Survey. When a structure displays dependence on distance and azimuthal angle from a center (for example the spiral arms of galaxies or the diffraction spikes of stars), projecting the pixels to polar coordinates greatly simplifies their study. This projection from one pixel grid to another is known as a "polar plot". For this purpose, a new option has been added to the GNU Astronomy Utilities (Gnuastro) in version 0.23 to "astscript-radial-profile" script, which we describe in this research note. We present radio observations of the galaxy cluster Abell S1136 at 888 MHz, using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder radio telescope, as part of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe Early Science program. We compare these findings with data from the Murchison Widefield Array, XMM-Newton, the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, the Digitised Sky Survey, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Our analysis shows the X-ray and radio emission in Abell S1136 are closely aligned and centered on the BCG, while the X-ray temperature profile shows a relaxed cluster with no evidence of a cool core. We find that the diffuse radio emission in the centre of the cluster shows more structure than seen in previous low-resolution observations of this source, which appeared formerly as an amorphous radio blob, similar in appearance to a radio halo; our observations show the diffuse emission in the Abell S1136 galaxy cluster contains three narrow filamentary structures visible at 888 MHz, between$\sim 80$ and 140 kpc in length; however the properties of the diffuse emission do not fully match that of a radio (mini-)halo or (fossil) tailed radio source., Comment: To appear in PASA

We present an overview of the LIGHTS (LBT Imaging of Galactic Halos and Tidal Structures) survey, which currently includes 25 nearby galaxies that are on average $\sim$ 1 mag fainter than the Milky Way, and a catalog of 54 low central surface brightness (24 $< \mu_{0,g}$/mag arcsec$^{-2} < 28$) satellite galaxy candidates, most of which were previously uncatalogued. The depth of the imaging exceeds the full 10-year depth of the Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We find, after applying completeness corrections, rising numbers of candidate satellites as we approach the limiting luminosity (M$_r \sim -8$ mag) and central surface brightness ($\mu_{0,g} \sim 28$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$). Over the parameter range we explore, each host galaxy (excluding those that are in overdense regions, apparently groups) has nearly 4 such candidate satellites to a projected radius of $\sim$ 100 kpc. These objects are mostly just at or beyond the reach of spectroscopy unless they are H I rich or have ongoing star formation. We identify 3, possibly 4, ultra-diffuse satellite galaxies (UDGs; effective radius $ > 1.5$ kpc). This incidence rate falls within expectations of the extrapolation of the published relationship between the number of UDGs and host halo mass. Lastly, we visually identify 12 candidate satellites that host a nuclear star cluster (NSC). The NSC occupation fraction for the sample (12/54) matches that published for satellites of early-type galaxies, suggesting that the parent's morphological type plays at most a limited role in determining the NSC occupation fraction., Comment: 26 pages, accepted for publication in AJ

The discovery of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov offered the unique opportunity to obtain a detailed analysis of an object coming from another planetary system, and leaving behind material in our interplanetary space. We continuously observed 2I/Borisov between October 3 and December 13, 2019 using the 1.52-m Telescopio Carlos S\'{a}nchez equipped with MuSCAT2 instrument, and the 2.54-m Isaac Newton Telescope with Wide Field Camera. We characterize its morphology and spectro-photometric features using the data gathered during this extended campaign. Simultaneous imaging in four bands ($g$, $r$, $i$, and $z_s$) reveals a homogeneous composition and a reddish hue, resembling Solar System comets, and as well a diffuse profile exhibiting familiar cometary traits. We discern a stationary trend fluctuating around a constant activity level throughout October and November 2019. Subsequently, a reduction in activity is observed in December. Dust production and mass loss calculations indicate approximately an average of 4 kg/s before perihelion, while after perihelion the net mass loss is about 0.6 kg/s. Our simulations indicate the most probable size of coma dust particles should be in the range 200-250 nm, and the terminal speed around 300 m/s. The spectrum acquired with the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope shows the presence of a strong CN line for which we find a gas production rate of $1.2 \times 10^{24}~s^{-1}$. We also detected NH$_2$ and OI bands. The ratio between NH$_2$ and CN productions is $\log (NH_2/CN) =-0.2$. Radial profiles play a crucial role in the analysis and interpretation of astronomical data, facilitating the extraction of spatial information. However, highly customizable (for different scenarios) measurements over each elliptical annulus can be challenging. In response, we present 'astscript-radial-profile', which is part of Gnuastro from version 0.15 and has an extensive documentation. A convenient feature of this program is its capability to make the measurements with different operators (mean, median, sigma-clipping, and many more) over ellipses, very quickly and directly on the command-line with minimal dependencies. Color plays a crucial role in the visualization, interpretation, and analysis of multi-wavelength astronomical images. However, generating color images that accurately represent the full dynamic range of astronomical sources is challenging. In response, Gnuastro v0.22 introduces the program 'astscript-color-faint-gray', which is extensively documented in the Gnuastro manual. It employs a non-linear transformation to assign an 8-bit RGB (Red-Green-Blue) value to brighter pixels, while the fainter ones are shown in an inverse grayscale. This approach enables the simultaneous visualization of low surface brightness features within the same image. We have investigated the properties (e.g., age, metallicity) of the stellar populations of a ring-like tidal stellar stream (or streams) around the edge-on galaxy SPRC047 (z = 0.031) using spectral energy distribution (SED) fits to integrated broad-band aperture flux densities. We used visual images in six different bands and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6 micron data. We have attempted to derive best-fit stellar population parameters (metallicity, age) in three non-contiguous segments of the stream. Due to the very low surface brightness of the stream, we have performed a deconvolution with a Richardson-Lucy type algorithm of the low spatial resolution 3.6 micron IRAC image, thereby reducing the effect of the point-spread-function (PSF) aliased "emission" from the bright edge-on central galaxy at the locations of our three stream segments. Our SED fits that used several different star formation history priors, from an exponentially decaying star formation burst to continuous star formation, indicate that the age-metallicity-dust degeneracy is not resolved, most likely because of inadequate wavelength coverage and low signal-to-noise ratios of the low surface brightness features. We also discuss how future deep visual-near-infrared observations, combined with absolute flux calibration uncertainties at or below the 1 per cent level, complemented by equally well absolute flux calibrated observations in ultraviolet and mid-infrared bands, would improve the accuracy of broad-band SED fitting results for low surface brightness targets, such as stellar streams around nearby galaxies that are not resolved into stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Calibration of pixel values is a fundamental step for accurate measurements in astronomical imaging. In astronomical jargon this is known as estimating zero point magnitude. Here, we introduce a newly added script in GNU Astronomy Utilities (Gnuastro) version 0.20 for the zero point magnitude estimation, named: astscript-zeropoint. The script offers numerous features, such as the flexibility to use either image(s) or a catalog as the reference dataset. Additionally, steps are parallelized to enhance efficiency for big data. Thanks to Gnuastro's minimal dependencies, the script is both flexible and portable. The pointing pattern is an integral part of designing one's observation strategy for a certain scientific goal. But accounting for the particular science case or instrument artifacts (like distortion, vignetting or large areas of bad pixels) can make it hard to predict how the exposure map of the final stack will be. To help address this problem, Gnuastro 0.21 includes a new executable program called astscript-pointing-simulate that is fully described in the Gnuastro manual and comes with a complete tutorial. We present a pilot study to assess the potential of Hyper Suprime-Cam Public Data Release 2 (HSC-PDR2) images for the analysis of extended faint structures within groups of galaxies. We examine the intra-group light (IGL) of the group 400138 ($M_{\rm{dyn}}= 1.3 \pm 0.5 \times 10^{13} $M$_{\odot}$, $z\sim 0.2$) from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey using Hyper-Suprime Cam Subaru Strategic Program Public Data Release 2 (HSC-PDR2) images in $g$, $r$, and $i$ bands. We present the most extended IGL measurement to date, reaching down to $\mu_{g}^{\rm{lim}}=30.76$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ ($3 \sigma$; $10 \times 10$ arcsec$^{2}$) at a semi-major axis of 275 kpc. The IGL shows mean colour values of $g-i=0.92$, $g-r=0.60$, and $r-i=0.32$ ($\pm$0.01). The IGL stellar populations are younger ($2-2.5$ Gyr) and less metal-rich ([Fe/H] $ \sim -$0.4) than those of the host group galaxies. We find a range of IGL fractions as a function of total group luminosity of $\sim 2-36 \%$ depending on the definition of IGL, with larger fractions the bluer the observation wavelength. The early-type to late-type galaxy ratio suggests that 400138 is a more evolved group, dominated by ETGs, and the IGL fraction agrees with that of other similarly evolved groups. These results are consistent with tidal stripping of the outer parts of Milky Way-like galaxies as the main driver of the IGL build-up. This is supported by the detection of substructure in the IGL towards the galaxy member 1660615 suggesting a recent interaction ($<1$ Gyr ago) of that galaxy with the core of the group., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Context. Stellar tidal streams are the result of tidal interactions between a central galaxy and lower mass systems like satellite galaxies or globular clusters. For the Local Group, many diffuse substructures have been identified and their link to the galaxy evolution has been traced. However it cannot be assumed that the Milky Way or M31 are representative of their galaxy class, and a larger sample of analogue galaxies beyond the Local Group is required to be able to generalise the underlying theory. Aims. We want to characterise photometrically the stellar streams around Milky Way analogues in the local Universe with the goal to deepen our understanding of the interaction between host and satellite galaxies, and ultimately of the galaxy formation and evolution processes. Methods. In the present work we identified and analysed stellar tidal streams around Milky Way analogue galaxies from the SAGA sample, using deep images of the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys (for this sample, we obtain a range of r-band surface brightness limit between 27.8 and 29 mag / arcsec2). We measure the surface brightness and colours of the detected streams using GNU Astronomy Utilities software. Results. We identified 16 new stellar tidal streams around Milky Way analogue galaxies at distances between 25 and 40 Mpc. Applying statistical analysis to our findings for the SAGA II galaxy sample, we obtained a frequency of 12.2% +/- 2.4% for stellar streams. We measured surface brightness and colours of the detected streams, and the comparison to the dwarf satellite galaxies population around galaxies belonging to the same SAGA sample shows that the mean colour of the streams is 0.20 mag redder than that of the SAGA satellites; also, the streams are, in average, 0.057 +/- 0.021 mag redder that their progenitor, for those cases when a likely progenitor could be identified., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Tidal ring galaxies are observed rarely in the local universe due to their intrinsically transient nature. The tidal ring structures are the result of strong interactions between gas-rich stellar disks and smaller galactic systems and do not last longer than ~500~Myr therefore, these are perfect scenarios where to find the debris of recently accreted dwarf galactic systems. We present new deep images of the NGC 922 tidal ring galaxy and its surroundings from the DESI Legacy survey data and from our observations with an amateur telescope. These observations are compared with results from high-resolution N-body simulations designed to reproduce an alternative formation scenario for this peculiar galaxy. Our new observations unveil that the low surface brightness stellar tidal structures around NGC 922 are much more complex than reported in previous works. In particular, the formerly detected tidal spike-like structure at the northeast of the central galaxy disk is not connected with the dwarf companion galaxy PGC3080368, which has been suggested as the intruder triggering the ring formation of NGC 922. The deep images reveal that this tidal structure is mainly composed by a fainter giant umbrella-like shape and thus it was formed from the tidal disruption of a different satellite. Using the broad-band g, r and z DESI LS images, we measured the photometric properties of this stellar stream, estimating a total absolute magnitude in r-band of Mr= -17.0 +/- 0.03 magn and a total stellar mass for the stream between 6.9-8.5X10^8 Mo. We perform a set of N-body simulations to reproduce the observed NGC 922-intruder interaction, suggesting a new scenario for the formation of its tidal ring from the in-fall of a gas rich satellite around 150 Myr ago., Comment: 8 Pages, 4 figures, submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

In this work we study the striking case of a narrow blue stream around the NGC 7241 galaxy and its foreground dwarf companion. We want to figure out if the stream was generated by tidal interaction with NGC 7241 or it first interacted with the foreground dwarf companion and later both fell together towards NGC 7241. We use four sets of observations, including a follow-up spectroscopic study with the MEGARA instrument at the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias. Our data suggest that the compact object we detected in the stream is a foreground Milky Way halo star. Near this compact object we detect emission lines overlapping a bluer and fainter blob of the stream that is clearly visible in both ultra-violet and optical deep images. From its heliocentric systemic radial velocity (Vsyst= 1548.58+/-1.80 km s^-1) and new UV and optical broad-band photometry, we conclude that this over-density could be the actual core of the stream, with an absolute magnitude of M_g ~ -10 and a (g-r) = 0.08 +/- 0.11, consistent with a remnant of a low-mass dwarf satellite undergoing a current episode of star formation. From the width of the stream and assuming a circular orbit, we calculate that the progenitor mass can be the typical of a dwarf galaxy, but it could also be substantially lower if the stream is on a very radial orbit or it was created by tidal interaction with the companion dwarf instead of with NGC 7241. Finally, we find that blue stellar streams containing star formation regions are commonly predicted by high-resolution cosmological simulations of galaxies lighter than the Milky Way. This scenario is consistent with the processes explaining the bursty star formation history of some dwarf satellites, which are followed by a gas depletion and a fast quenching once they enter within the virial radius of their host galaxies for the first time., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the first results of the LBT Imaging of Galaxy Haloes and Tidal Structures (LIGHTS) survey. LIGHTS is an ongoing observational campaign with the 2x8.4m Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) aiming to explore the stellar haloes and the low surface brightness population of satellites down to a depth of muV~31 mag/arcsec^2 (3 sigma in 10"x10" boxes) of nearby galaxies. We simultaneously collected deep imaging in the g and r Sloan filters using the Large Binocular Cameras (LBCs). The resulting images are 60 times (i.e. ~4.5 mag) deeper than those from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and they have characteristics comparable (in depth and spatial resolution) to the ones expected from the future Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Here we show the first results of our pilot programme targeting NGC1042 (an M33 analogue at a distance of 13.5 Mpc) and its surroundings. The depth of the images allowed us to detect an asymmetric stellar halo in the outskirts of this galaxy whose mass (1.4+-0.4x10^8 Msun) is in agreement with the Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LambdaCDM) expectations. Additionally, we show that deep imaging from the LBT reveals low mass satellites (a few times 10^5 Msun) with very faint central surface brightness muV(0)~27 mag/arcsec^2 (i.e. similar to Local Group dwarf spheroidals, such as Andromeda XIV or Sextans, but at distances well beyond the local volume). The depth and spatial resolution provided by the LIGHTS survey open up a unique opportunity to explore the `missing satellites' problem in a large variety of galaxies beyond our Local Group down to masses where the difference between the theory and observation (if any) should be significant., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, A&A in press

Mergers and tidal interactions between massive galaxies and their dwarf satellites are a fundamental prediction of the Lambda-Cold Dark Matter cosmology. These events are thought to provide important observational diagnostics of nonlinear structure formation. Stellar streams in the Milky Way and Andromeda are spectacular evidence for ongoing satellite disruption. However, constructing a statistically meaningful sample of tidal streams beyond the Local Group has proven a daunting observational challenge, and the full potential for deepening our understanding of galaxy assembly using stellar streams has yet to be realised. Here we introduce the Stellar Stream Legacy Survey, a systematic imaging survey of tidal features associated with dwarf galaxy accretion around a sample of ~3100 nearby galaxies within z~0.02, including about 940 Milky Way analogues. Our survey exploits public deep imaging data from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys, which reach surface brightness as faint as ~29 mag/arcsec^2 in the r band. As a proof of concept of our survey, we report the detection and broad-band photometry of 24 new stellar streams in the local Universe. We discuss how these observations can yield new constraints on galaxy formation theory through comparison to mock observations from cosmological galaxy simulations. Analysis pipelines commonly use high-level technologies that are popular when created, but are unlikely to be readable, executable, or sustainable in the long term. A set of criteria is introduced to address this problem: Completeness (no execution requirement beyond a minimal Unix-like operating system, no administrator privileges, no network connection, and storage primarily in plain text); modular design; minimal complexity; scalability; verifiable inputs and outputs; version control; linking analysis with narrative; and free and open source software. As a proof of concept, we introduce "Maneage" (Managing data lineage), enabling cheap archiving, provenance extraction, and peer verification that has been tested in several research publications. We show that longevity is a realistic requirement that does not sacrifice immediate or short-term reproducibility. The caveats (with proposed solutions) are then discussed and we conclude with the benefits for the various stakeholders. Lyman$-\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emission lines are typically found to be redshifted with respect to the systemic redshifts of galaxies, likely due to resonant scattering of Ly$\alpha$ photons. Here we measure the average velocity offset for a sample of 96 $z\approx3.3$ Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) with a median Ly$\alpha$ flux (luminosity) of $\approx 10^{-17}~\rm erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$ ($\approx10^{42}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$) and a median star formation rate (SFR) of $\approx1.3 \rm M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$ (not corrected for possible dust extinction), detected by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer as part of our MUSEQuBES circumgalactic medium (CGM) survey. By postulating that the stacked CGM absorption profiles of these LAEs, probed by 8 background quasars, must be centered on the systemic redshift, we measure an average velocity offset, V$_{\rm offset} = 171 \pm 8$ $\rm km s^{-1}$, between the Ly$\alpha$ emission peak and the systemic redshift. The observed V$_{\rm offset}$ is lower by factors of $\approx1.4$ and $\approx2.6$ compared to the velocity offsets measured for narrow-band selected LAEs and Lyman break galaxies, respectively, which probe galaxies with higher masses and SFRs. Consistent with earlier studies based on direct measurements for individual objects, we find that the V$_{\rm offset}$ is correlated with the full width at half-maximum of the red peak of the Ly$\alpha$ line, and anti-correlated with the rest-frame equivalent width. Moreover, we find that $V_{\rm offset}$ is correlated with SFR with a sub-linear scaling relation, V$_{\rm offset}\propto \rm SFR^{0.16\pm0.03}$. Adopting the mass scaling for main sequence galaxies, such a relation suggests that V$_{\rm offset}$ scales with the circular velocity of the dark matter halos hosting the LAEs., Comment: Published on 15 May, 2020 along with an erratum (Ref: MNRAS 498, 4424, 2020, doi:10.1093/mnras/staa2668), since Fig. 2 has not been updated in the published version. NoiseChisel is a program to detect very low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) features with minimal assumptions on their morphology. It was introduced in 2015 and released within a collection of data analysis programs and libraries known as GNU Astronomy Utilities (Gnuastro). The 10th stable version of Gnuastro was released in August 2019 and NoiseChisel has significantly improved: detecting even fainter signal, enabling better user control over its inner workings, and many bug fixes. The most important change until version 0.10 is that NoiseChisel's segmentation features have been moved into a new program called Segment. Another major change is the final growth strategy of its true detections, for example NoiseChisel is able to detect the outer wings of M51 down to S/N of 0.25, or 25.97 mag/arcsec2 on a single-exposure SDSS image (r-band). Segment is also able to detect the localized HII regions as "clumps" much more successfully. For a detailed list of improvements after version 0.10, see the most recent manual. The Hubble Ultra Deep field (HUDF) is the deepest region ever observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. With the main objective of unveiling the nature of galaxies up to $z \sim 7-8$, the observing and reduction strategy have focused on the properties of small and unresolved objects, rather than the outskirts of the largest objects, which are usually over-subtracted. We aim to create a new set of WFC3/IR mosaics of the HUDF using novel techniques to preserve the properties of the low surface brightness regions. We created ABYSS: a pipeline that optimises the estimate and modelling of low-level systematic effects to obtain a robust background subtraction. We have improved four key points in the reduction: 1) creation of new absolute sky flat fields, 2) extended persistence models, 3) dedicated sky background subtraction and 4) robust co-adding. The new mosaics successfully recover the low surface brightness structure removed on the previous HUDF published reductions. The amount of light recovered with a mean surface brightness dimmer than $\overline{\mu}=26$ mar arcsec$^{-2}$ is equivalent to a m=19 mag source when compared to the XDF and a m=20 mag compared to the HUDF12. We present a set of techniques to reduce ultra-deep images ($\mu>32.5$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$, $3\sigma$ in $10\times10$ arcsec boxes), that successfully allow to detect the low surface brightness structure of extended sources on ultra deep surveys. The developed procedures are applicable to HST, JWST, EUCLID and many other space and ground-based observatories. We report the detection of extended Lyman-alpha (Lya) haloes around 145 individual star-forming galaxies at redshifts 3 M_{UV}> -22) Lya emitters (LAEs). Using a 2D, two-component decomposition of Lya emission assuming circular exponential distributions, we measure scale lengths and luminosities of Lya haloes. We find that 80% of our objects having reliable Lya halo measurements show Lya emission that is significantly more extended than the UV continuum detected by HST (by a factor ~4 to >20). The median exponential scale length of the Lya haloes in our sample is ~4.5 kpc. By comparing the maximal detected extent of the Lya emission with the predicted dark matter halo virial radii of simulated galaxies, we show that the detected Lya emission of our selected sample of LAEs probes a significant portion of the cold circum-galactic medium (CGM) of these galaxies (>50% in average). This result shows that there must be significant HI reservoirs in the CGM and reinforces the idea that Lya haloes are ubiquitous around high-redshift Lya emitting galaxies. Our characterization of the Lya haloes indicates that the majority of the Lya flux comes from the halo (~65%) and that their scale lengths seem to be linked to the UV properties of the galaxies. We do not observe a significant Lya halo size evolution with redshift. We also find that the Lya lines cover a large range of full width at half maximum (FWHM) from 118 to 512 km/s. While the FWHM does not seem to be correlated to the Lya scale length, most compact Lya haloes and those that are not detected with high significance tend to have narrower Lya profiles. We present the MUSE Hubble Ultra Deep Survey, a mosaic of nine MUSE fields covering 90\% of the entire HUDF region with a 10-hour deep exposure time, plus a deeper 31-hour exposure in a single 1.15 arcmin2 field. The improved observing strategy and advanced data reduction results in datacubes with sub-arcsecond spatial resolution (0.65 arcsec at 7000 A) and accurate astrometry (0.07 arcsec rms). We compare the broadband photometric properties of the datacubes to HST photometry, finding a good agreement in zeropoint up to mAB=28 but with an increasing scatter for faint objects. We have investigated the noise properties and developed an empirical way to account for the impact of the correlation introduced by the 3D drizzle interpolation. The achieved 3 sigma emission line detection limit for a point source is 1.5 and 3.1 10-19 erg.s-1.cm-2 for the single ultra-deep datacube and the mosaic, respectively. We extracted 6288 sources using an optimal extraction scheme that takes the published HST source locations as prior. In parallel, we performed a blind search of emission line galaxies using an original method based on advanced test statistics and filter matching. The blind search results in 1251 emission line galaxy candidates in the mosaic and 306 in the ultradeep datacube, including 72 sources without HST counterparts (mAB>31). In addition 88 sources missed in the HST catalog but with clear HST counterparts were identified. This data set is the deepest spectroscopic survey ever performed. In just over 100 hours of integration time, it provides nearly an order of magnitude more spectroscopic redshifts compared to the data that has been accumulated on the UDF over the past decade. The depth and high quality of these datacubes enables new and detailed studies of the physical properties of the galaxy population and their environments over a large redshift range., Comment: 21 pages

Cosmological simulations suggest that most of the matter in the Universe is distributed along filaments connecting galaxies. Illuminated by the cosmic UV background (UVB), these structures are expected to glow in fluorescent Lyman alpha emission with a Surface Brightness (SB) that is well below current observational limits for individual detections. We study the UV luminosity functions (LFs) at $z\sim 4$, $5$, $6,$ and $7$ based on the deep large-area optical images taken by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru strategic program (SSP). On the 100 deg$^2$ sky of the HSC SSP data available to date, we make enormous samples consisting of a total of 579,565 dropout candidates at $z\sim 4-7$ by the standard color selection technique, 358 out of which are spectroscopically confirmed by our follow-up spectroscopy and other studies. We obtain UV LFs at $z \sim 4-7$ that span a very wide UV luminosity range of $\sim 0.002 - 100 \, L_{\rm UV}^\ast$ ($-26 < M_{\rm UV} < -14$ mag) by combining LFs from our program and the ultra-deep Hubble Space Telescope legacy surveys. We derive three parameters of the best-fit Schechter function, $\phi^\ast$, $M_{\rm UV}^\ast$, and $\alpha$, of the UV LFs in the magnitude range where the AGN contribution is negligible, and find that $\alpha$ and $\phi^\ast$ decrease from $z\sim 4$ to $7$ with no significant evolution of $M_{\rm UV}^\ast$. Because our HSC SSP data bridge the LFs of galaxies and AGNs with great statistical accuracy, we carefully investigate the bright end of the galaxy UV LFs that are estimated by the subtraction of the AGN contribution either aided with spectroscopy or the best-fit AGN UV LFs. We find that the bright end of the galaxy UV LFs cannot be explained by the Schechter function fits at $> 2 \sigma$ significance, and require either double power-law functions or modified Schechter functions that consider a magnification bias due to gravitational lensing., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ special issue

In the coming era of massive surveys (e.g. LSST, SKA), the role of the database designers and the algorithms they choose to adopt becomes the decisive factor in scientific progress. Systems that allow/encourage users/scientists to be more creative with the reduction/analysis algorithms can greatly enhance scientific productivity. The separation/modularity of the detection processes and catalog production is one proposal for achieving `Reduction/analysis algorithms for large databases and vice versa' (a key theme for the 26th ADASS). With the new noise-based detection paradigm, non-parametric detection is now possible for astronomical objects to very low surface brightness limits. In our implementation, one software (NoiseChisel) is in charge of detection and another (MakeCatalog) is in charge of catalog production. A noise-based non-parametric technique for detecting nebulous objects, for example, irregular or clumpy galaxies, and their structure in noise is introduced. "Noise-based" and "non-parametric" imply that this technique imposes negligible constraints on the properties of the targets and that it employs no regression analysis or fittings. The sub-sky detection threshold is defined and initial detections are found, independently of the sky value. False detections are then estimated and removed using the ambient noise as a reference. This results in a purity level of 0.89 for the final detections as compared to 0.29 for SExtractor when a completeness of 1 is desired for a sample of extremely faint and diffuse mock galaxy profiles. The difference in the mean of the undetected pixels with the known background of mock images is decreased by 4.6 times depending on the diffuseness of the test profiles, quantifying the success in their detection. A non-parametric approach to defining substructure over a detected region is also introduced. NoiseChisel is our software implementation of this new technique. Contrary to the existing signal-based approach to detection, in its various implementations, signal-related parameters such as the image point spread function or known object shapes and models are irrelevant here. Such features make this technique very useful in astrophysical applications such as detection, photometry, or morphological analysis of nebulous objects buried in noise, for example, galaxies that do not generically have a known shape when imaged., Comment: NoiseChisel is part of GNU Astronomy Utilities (see https://www.gnu.org/software/gnuastro/ ). Despite expanding research activity in gravitational lens modeling, there is no particular software which is considered a standard. Much of the gravitational lens modeling software is written by individual investigators for their own use. Some gravitational lens modeling software is freely available for download but is widely variable with regard to ease of use and quality of documentation. This review of 13 software packages was undertaken to provide a single source of information. Gravitational lens models are classified as parametric models or non-parametric models, and can be further divided into research and educational software. Software used in research includes the GRAVLENS package (with both gravlens and lensmodel), Lenstool, LensPerfect, glafic, PixeLens, SimpLens, Lensview, and GRALE. In this review, GravLensHD, G-Lens, Gravitational Lensing, lens and MOWGLI are categorized as educational programs that are useful for demonstrating various aspects of lensing. Each of the 13 software packages is reviewed with regard to software features (installation, documentation, files provided, etc.) and lensing features (type of model, input data, output data, etc.) as well as a brief review of studies where they have been used. Recent studies have demonstrated the utility of strong gravitational lensing data for mass mapping, and suggest increased use of these techniques in the future. Coupled with the advent of greatly improved imaging, new approaches to modeling of strong gravitational lens systems are needed. This is the first systematic review of strong gravitational lens modeling software, providing investigators with a starting point for future software development to further advance gravitational lens modeling research.

Using the very deep Subaru images of the GOODS-N region, from the MOIRCS Deep Survey and images from the HST/ACS, we have measured the Luminosity Ratio (LR) of the outer to the central regions of massive (M>10^{10.5}M_{Sun}) galaxies at fixed radii in a single rest-frame for z<3.5 as a new approach to the problem of size evolution. We didn't observe any evolution in the median LR. We present scaling relations between stellar-mass (Mstar) and the size of galaxies at 0.3 < z < 3 for half- (R_50) and 90 percent-light (R_90) radii, using a deep K-band selected catalogue taken with the Subaru Telescope and MOIRCS in the GOODS-North region. The logarithmic slope R \propto Mstar^{0.1-0.2} is independent of redshift in a wide mass range of Mstar ~ 10^8-10^11 Msun, irrespective of galaxy populations (star-forming, quiescent). The offset change is < 50 percent. Provided that optical light in the rest frame traces the stellar mass of galaxies, the universal relation demonstrates that the stellar mass was built up in galaxies over their cosmic histories in a similar manner on average irrelevant to galaxy mass. The small offset in each stellar mass bin from the universal relation shows weak size evolution at a given mass. There is a moderate increase of 30-50 percent for R_50 and R_90 for less massive galaxies (Mstar < 10^10 Msun) from z~3 to z~1, while the sizes remains unchanged or slightly decrease towards z~0.3. For massive galaxies (Mstar > 10^11 Msun), the evolution is ~70-80 % increase in R_90 from z~3 to z~0.3, though that in R_50 is weaker. The evolution of compactness factor, R_50/R_90, which becomes smaller at lower redshift, is suggestive of minor merging effect in the outer envelope of massive galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS
