Walkability has recently been a major topic and an essential attribute in the sustainability approach to urban design and planning. Studying urban dimensions and qualities in a specific context is essential to developing walkability criteria, as each environment has its conditions and spatial scale that will affect walkability scenarios differently. This paper studies the main criteria contributing to successful walkable environments in high-density communities. The methodology consists of developing detailed walkability criteria by studying urban qualities related to three dimensions: morphological/visual, functional, and social. Each urban quality is analyzed by stating its definition, assessment method and studying its condition in high-density communities. The assessment methods are based on quantitative and qualitative indicators depending on the nature of the criteria, which include imageability, transparency, scale of enclosure, complexity, connectivity, land use mix, legibility, as well as pedestrian comfort and safety. Providing tools to upgrade walkability in a city like Alexandria in Egypt is another objective of this study. Walkability criteria are tested on a typical city center street where buildings of every age and condition are mingled, and which is similar to many other Alexandria streets, thus, the results and recommendations can contribute to enhancing the walkability of everyday streets in the city. However, only a few acknowledge that a problem seldom neatly fits within a single discipline, nor does it conform to the principle of general equivalence. Handling its irreducibility and non-entailment is a skill possessed by very few. Even fewer take the quasi-causal capacity of what we term the ‘space of technicity’ seriously. The space of technicity, the shared problem of this volume, is a consequence of immanence. Each configuration of surfaces comprising the built environment produces an intangible effect, acting as a quasi-cause. It can be referred to as downward causation or the timely rediscovery of (neo)finalism. In this volume it is approached it from the perspective of axiology. The space of technicity allows us to evade techno-determinism without adopting an anything-goes attitude. That which has become manifest could have individuated differently. However, the potential of a body cannot be discerned before intervening in the causal fabric of agential reality to extract the singular points that make certain outcomes more likely than others, surpassing mere probability. When operating within the ethico-aesthetic paradigm, where sense becomes intricately dependent on sensibility, and vice versa, the volume’s attitude might be said to approximate the Spinozian third kind of knowledge that intuits design (and its space of technicity) beyond mere imagination or reason. Deze publicatie is een weerslag van de uitkomsten van het KaDEr-project (Karakteristiek Duurzaam Erfgoed) dat de TU Delft in opdracht van en in samenwerking met de Provincie Gelderland heeft uitgevoerd. De lezer wordt meegenomen in de zoektocht om invulling te geven aan de relatie tussen wetenschap, praktijk en beleid rondom duurzaam erfgoed op verschillende schaalniveaus. Aan de hand van acht bijdragen wordt gereflecteerd op het proces en de uitkomsten. We noemen dit 'KaDEr-stellingen'. Er was een kader, we stelden kaders bij en we namen positie in, stelligheden werden ter discussie gesteld en aan het eind worden conclusies verwoord in stellingnames. Hierbij kan kritisch gereflecteerd worden op proces en uitkomsten. De auteurs doen dit aan de hand van een thema dat gedurende de afgelopen vier jaar aan de orde is geweest binnen hun domein. Zij nemen dus stelling in met betrekking tot het debat dat naar aanleiding van dit thema gevoerd is en in veel gevallen nog verder gevoerd gaat worden. Daarnaast hebben we een aantal meer zijdelings betrokkenen gevraagd om stelling te nemen met een uitspraak naar aanleiding van hun ervaringen tijdens het project. Het KaDEr-project omvatte na een intensieve voorbereiding vier kalenderjaren. We denken dat op het onderdelen nog een vervolg behoeft. Lake Superior is often perceived as a pristine body of water, the “untouched” or “least spoiled” of the Great Lakes. While Lake Superior’s northern geography has enabled it to escape much of the development of the lower Great Lakes, this does not mean the basin in unshaped by humans – just that the traces are harder to see. The landscapes that serve as the interface between humans and Lake Superior often reduce the landscape to a scenic backdrop, omitting places of human influence to uphold its wilderness status. This practicum challenges the untouched image of Lake Superior and argues that this over-reduction of landscape prevents meaningful connection with place. An alternative image of Lake Superior is projected through the design of places that make the human role in shaping the landscape perceptible. This is demonstrated through design exploration that engages the dredging cycle of the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie. Dredge material itself hovers somewhere between land and water, human and natural. This liminality is captured through design that seeks to make perceptible the processes of sediment impoundment, release, and accumulation, blurring the line drawn between human and natural systems.

Trees and green space seldom exist in historically low-income neighbourhoods. Yet, neighbourhoods with higher socio-economic levels do not experience the same issue. Winnipeg’s car prioritization demands seas of hard surfaces that facilitate these problematic conditions. Little parkland exists after the City prioritizes expansive right-of-ways that access the land it sold to developers. When park space inequities are acknowledged, expensive land acquisition is the scapegoat for adding more park space. Winnipeg’s failure to prioritize equal access to its outdoor services perpetuates inequities and poverty. However, specific public streets created at the onset of car-centrism have been redundant and idle for years. The practicum will explore where these redundant streets exist within Winnipeg, and by examining low-income neighbourhood trees, parks, and pedestrian spatial experiences, it will propose a parkway network that addresses park space inequities in neighbourhoods of the highest need.

Les matériaux que l’on appelait volontiers “écologiques” se voient aujourd’hui qualifiés de “régénératifs”. Ces qualificatifs englobants en cotoient beaucoup d’autres, plus restrictifs mais aussi plus précis, tels que “géo- ou bio-sourcés”, “à faible transformation”, “locaux”, “bas-carbone”, “circulaires”, etc. Le qualificatif “régénératif” a creusé sa place dans le champ de la conception urbaine et architecturale comme alternative aux approches solutionnistes reprises sous les vocables “durable” ou “soutenable” ;il qualifie des approches visant non seulement à limiter les dégâts mais aussi à engager une dynamique dite “positive”, incluant des processus de restauration ou de réparation, a priori plutôt à l’échelle de systèmes complexes tels qu’un territoire. C’est en cascade que le terme “régénératif” se met à porter sur les matériaux. Il le fait en des sens qui varient largement. (a) Dans son sens premier, la régénération est la capacité matérielle, biologique, à se reconstituer après un dommage :c’est le cas, très spécifique, de fonges ou de bactéries qui peuvent être activées dans des opérations de réparation des matériaux. (b) Dans un sens beaucoup plus général, la régénération renvoie au fait de participer à l’amélioration d’un système donné, comme c’est le cas, par exemple, du passage d’une logique linéaire à une logique circulaire. Je propose ici d’interroger les changements potentiellement engagés par ces matériaux dits “régénératifs” par rapport aux pratiques de maintenance qu’ils requièrent. This Repository collects 49 methods, defined here as systematic procedures, techniques and ways of acting, to explore, examine and discover urban places. Vademecum: 77 Minor Terms for Writing Urban Places offers a set of concepts that stimulate new approaches in planning, architecture, urban design, policy and other practices of spatial development. These diverse concepts might reveal blind spots in urban discourse or bring insights from one discipline to another. In light of rapid urbanisation and the accelerating threats of climate change, scale and multitude are what set the Global North and South apart. Yet, as this course exposes, the issues faced by urban areas have resembling themes and characteristics, regardless of economic status or geographic location. Therefore, in the context of sustainable urban development, the binary dichotomy of the terms ‘Global North’ and ‘Global South’ must be contested. While a focus on Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, and the MENA region, Rethink the City attempts to understand the transboundary nature of urban issues and provide a platform to gather insights beyond borders. Waste diversion and reduction continues to be a prominent discussion among Canadian municipalities as we collectively recognize the impact that waste production has on the environment and our future, especially in the context of climate change. Much of the focus in this regard has been on individual waste generation and reduction and the “zero-waste” movement, with less focus on construction, renovation, and demolition (CRD) waste. Research shows that CRD waste contributes between 27% and 40% of total municipal solid waste in Canada and it is estimated that the CRD sector is responsible for 40% of raw material consumption in North America. With an estimated potential of 95% of CRD materials being available for salvage, reuse, repurposing, and recycling, there is a lot of opportunity for growth in responsible CRD waste management. My research shows that deconstruction, rather than demolition of buildings, is an important next step in waste diversion for Canadian municipalities and the waste generated from CRD presents an opportunity to recover a significant amount of resources. This research explores the barriers for deconstruction programs and policies for large, Canadian municipalities, how to overcome those barriers, and establishes a framework for moving forward in a municipal setting, working with the City of Edmonton for a real-world application. The results show that deconstruction has a small foothold in Canada and the US, but there are some leading-edge and developing examples. My framework builds on these and offers a path for actioning residential building deconstruction that can have a significant impact on reducing CRD waste going to landfills.

In a time of rapidly escalating climate change and increasing urbanization, cities are becoming a microcosm of climate change effects that require a response through the built environment to mitigate these issues. In Winnipeg, this will mean more intense storm events year-round and a variation between droughts and floods yearly, among other problems such as prolonged heat waves in the summer months. With more precipitation predicted for Winnipeg and the continued use of the combined sewer system causing sewage overflows into Winnipeg’s rivers, there is a need to look to green infrastructure to assist or replace Winnipeg’s grey infrastructure for water management. Green infrastructure in the form of constructed wetlands can be strategically incorporated along many of Winnipeg’s creeks to help manage higher volumes of water and purify it before it is released into the rivers. Constructed wetlands can help clean the Red, Assiniboine, and Seine Rivers, positively affecting the endangered Lake Winnipeg downstream, and double as park spaces to add to Winnipeg’s park system. This practicum investigates sites around Winnipeg that provide the potential for implementing constructed wetlands. It also contains a site design concept to show the possibilities of constructed wetlands and how they could be used in Winnipeg to improve the city’s water management system through green infrastructure.

Urban site analysis includes tangible factors such as the physical site features and intangible factors as the sensory site features like odors affect the inhabited area in the site. Environmental and chemical studies have much greater attention and studies to the odor effects in the urban areas than urban designers. The aim of this paper is to provide a validated and applicable method for the urban designers in odor measurement. The objective of this research is to present the various methods in measuring odors adopted in chemical and environmental studies to achieve an applicable odor measurement method in the urban design field. The odor measurement tools are usually dedicated to measure odor concentration at the odor source or at the receptor location, that are used in chemical and environmental studies. However, in the urban design studies the odor measurement could be performed using a method called the citizen science considering the FIDOL factor to evaluate the odor nuisance including odor frequency, intensity, duration, offensiveness, location, and hedonic tone. This research conducts a case study in a coastal area in Tripoli city and determine Tripoli landfill as a significant odor source that affect people in their inhabited areas. A questionnaire were distributed in the affected area by the odor source, and the respondents of the inhabitants ensured that the summer season is the most season that they can feel the odor in their places be associated with the wind direction. The results ensure that the citizen science method in measuring odors is validated, applicable, and available for urban designers to detect and estimate the affected area by odor source. Acceptable indoor air quality (IAQ) is one of the most relevant aspects of a healthy home environment. Despite advances in mechanical and hybrid ventilation systems, natural ventilation still constitutes a crucial intervention to improve IAQ in existing homes; especially in older and/or vulnerable ones. The challenge, however, is optimizing natural ventilation strategies so IAQ is reached while thermal discomfort (and potentially associated energy consumption) is minimized. The complexity of identifying factors that may determine the possibilities of natural ventilation in existing homes has traditionally hindered the efforts from the scientific community to communicate straightforward answers for end-users. This work develops a methodology that, based on real case studies and through a series of simulations, provides simple, context-specific criteria and recommendations in order to reach acceptable IAQ through natural ventilation strategies in existing homes. The use of a minimum ventilation time (MVT) indicator, alongside considerations for different seasons and housing types, are translated into step-by-step guidelines aimed at helping the end-user to (i) gain knowledge regarding the opportunities and limitations for natural ventilation in the dwelling, and (ii) identify which specific actions should be carried out under different conditions to maintain minimum IAQ. The conceptual framework and methodology presented, while illustrated for the case of Barcelona, can be replicated for different cities or regions with differing housing characteristics and climatological conditions, and can easily accommodate other locally relevant factors., This research work has been developed within the framework of the HABITAS project, funded by the Barcelona City Council (Awards for scientific research on urban challenges, 2020). The relationship between soil and water is at the center of interest now more than ever. Despite being a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary environmental value and beauty, the Wadden Sea, its territories, and its people now face an uncertain future while wrestling with latent climatic, economic-productive, and social crises. Subsidence increased by gas extraction and peat oxidation, soil erosion, saltwater intrusion, eutrophication, and agricultural water pollution testify to a territory in the throes of long-term repossession by the sea. Can we (co)design the Wadden Sea landscapes? How can we transform these emergencies into opportunities? Based upon applied research work in regional scenario-making and local design projects, the book attempts to imagine the present and future of the Wadden Sea and its hinterland adopting (co)designing approaches. Peatlands, agriculture, energy, and heritage all intersect to encourage economies and social inclusion projects where the landscapes of soil and water become the driving force to overcome the crises.

Critique of the pioneer canonRecent research and publications that articulate the history of architecture and gender describe figures qualified as pioneers. The method adopted establishes lists of portraits of the first women to study - graduate - build - photograph - and sell (delete as appropriate) in a chronology "outside of the world" [“hors du monde”]. These narrative methodologies and language elements outline "a new canon, that of women artists’ art history" - from which the field of architecture is not exempt - "just as excluding as the one it seeks to denounce". Indeed, using the analytical and semantic field of the pioneer does offer a narrative, a seemingly new and different "feminine" history, but it is incomplete because always disconnected from an historical genealogy that is still under construction. This truncated posterity highlights what Nochlin already denounced in her essay Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? these female artists are pioneers only according to the criteria of a canonical, male and patriarchal referential system.As a figure of the Belgian modernist movement, Simone Guillissen-Hoa (1916-1996) allows us, on one hand, to understand the specificities of the second modernist wave in post-war Europe and, on the other hand, to understand, through an intersectional reading of her identities and commitments, the gendered mechanisms in her practice, its reception and the construction of the history of architecture. Simone Guillissen-Hoa began her studies in architecture at the Institut Supérieur des Arts Décoratifs of La Cambre in 1935. The purpose of this practicum is to explore the possibilities of utilizing macrophytes in a Canadian climate to extract mercurial contamination from a large-scale aquatic environment. One of the primary guiding hypotheses, informed by research, is that it is reasonable to assume the mercurial contamination of the English Wabigoon hydrological system, which originated from Wabigoon Lake in the 1960s will, or has reached the drainage basin of Lake Winnipeg. This presents concerning issues in addition to the known eutrophication of the lake. The practicum requires an understanding of the specific nature of the contaminant and the processes in which it interacts with the aquatic environment and wider landscape. At the forefront, the processes of methylation and bioaccumulation play significant roles in the effects on our natural environments and will be leading informants on the eventual design goal. Additional research was devoted to exploring treatment systems designed by landscape architects as precedents. To negate further mercurial contamination of waterways, shores, and living beings, the practicum seeks to utilize the vegetative process of biofiltration to extract contaminants from the sediment and from the watercourse originating in Ontario and draining in Manitoba. The importance of the research relates to communities’ relationships to the river and water system, some of which are more reliant on the waterway and its resources than others. Informed design requirements include species able to perform extraction of contaminants all while allowing for accessibility for harvesting the macrophytes once the extraction process has taken place. The areas explored for site selection ranges from Wabigoon Lake, Ontario boreal to the south-east Traverse Bay of Lake Winnipeg. Specific sites will be selected for their appropriateness of intervention. On such a large hydrological scale, sites of mercuric sediment concentration are of interest. This thesis delves into the pursuit of mental pleasure and the art of avoiding hardship, key principles guiding both my life and art practice. It explores the practicalities of seeking pleasure in art, the significance of minimizing difficulties, and the emergence of a pleasure-focused philosophy. The thesis also discusses the rationale for choosing clay as the medium for this artistic exploration, supported by historical and contemporary references. The culmination of these elements is represented in my thesis exhibition, which is a manifestation of this approach.

This practicum focuses on improving the ecological conditions of Lahore. The city which was once known for its open spaces and was called the city of gardens. This city of gardens is now becoming a city of concrete. The city is losing its previous identity. An overpopulated urban city like Lahore cannot survive rapid and unsustainable development. This exerts pressure on existing natural resources, leading to water problems, decline in green spaces, pollution, and changes in the city’s temperatures. The green spaces are being paved to make room for roads and land-use buildings. Urban green spaces are an essential element of development planning, providing multiple benefits to society. This practicum studies the towns of Lahore in terms of population densities and the accessibility/availability of green spaces to the people who live in the towns. With help of photographs the quality of existing green spaces is also studied to understand what is lacking in the existing green spaces. New potential green spaces within the densely populated towns are identified. More detailed designs are created for two sites, each with different opportunities and challenges.

It can help increase physical activity, allow for a respite from the stress of everyday life, and have a profound and positive impact on one’s mental health. In addition to this, swimming outdoors, whether in an open air swimming pool or wild swimming in a lake or other body of water, can create a feeling of connection to nature. With all of this considered it is important to consider the role that landscape architecture can play in the future of swimmable landscapes. This practicum aims to explore this through reflection of the social history of swimming, the benefits swimming has for your health and the relatively recent spike in the popularity of wild swimming; resulting in the design of what a wild swimming pool might look like within the context of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The culture of Hip Hop is noticeably ingrained in twenty-first century contemporary culture, influencing everything from music, dance, fashion, and art, yet is formally non-existent in the discipline of interior design. Therefore, this practicum project aims to establish the theoretical foundations of Hip Hop interior design, a novel proposal which is informed by Hip Hop and the associated Hip Hop architecture movement. The identified theory will guide the design of The Toronto Centre for Hip Hop, a community centre for adolescents living in a disenfranchised inner-city neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario. Towards this pursuit, context is fundamental to situate Hip Hop within its distinct historical, social, and cultural emergence. The history of American racial segregation is unravelled to clarify the role architects, designers, and city planners played in the spatial and architectural marginalization of Black people. This bigoted construction was decisive in forming the inner city or ghetto, which eventually situated post-industrial New York as the incubator for Hip Hop to emerge. Hip Hop is then analyzed from its history to its various expressions, conclusively positioning it as a culture, as opposed to merely a musical genre. This allows for its connection to space and place, exploring how space is not universal or equal to all, substantiating the pursuit of Hip Hop architecture. Subsequently, theories from the developing Hip Hop architecture movement are reviewed to connect Hip Hop with built form, conclusively supporting the proposed idea of Hip Hop interior design. The ultimate goal of this practicum project is to contemplate a new approach to interior design that focuses primarily on revitalizing marginalized inner-city communities through the ideologies of Hip Hop. The undertaking reconsiders a Eurocentric imposition of space, towards a participatory design process that prioritizes the perspectives of Black, Brown, and minority people. This approach envisions

The study of architecture and design is a task that requires students to step out of their comfort zones. While, in no way, shape or form, is architecture the toughest of subjects to study, however, to study design and architecture, or rather to be in any creative school, is a test of mental and physical resilience, requiring strong determination and willingness to do what is necessary. However, often, that constant pressure ends up taking its toll on the students in the shape of negative emotions, anxiety, depression, and the thought of suicide in extreme cases. The intention behind this practicum is to identify issues such as mental, physical, and creative burnout amongst the FAUM students. The constant pressure, fatigue, creative need leads the students into negative spaces, creates issues of stress, depression, lacking energy, and productivity. While there’s ample research data that highlights these issues, I can attest to such negative emotions myself as a student in this field. This practicum will primarily draw from my personal experiences as an actively engaged design and architecture student within the broader North American post-secondary education system. My overarching goal in embarking on this journey is to conceptualize and design a novel student center that serves as a complementary support hub for students within the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The core intent behind this new student center is to provide architecture students with a distinct and tailor-made environment that caters to their unique needs as design-oriented individuals.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts individuals’ ability to focus, organize, and regulate impulses. In landscape architecture, accessible design can be applied to address ADHD, which can positively impact the urban environment and create a more inclusive space for all. The exploration of this intersection of ADHD and landscape architecture highlights both the challenges and potential strengths of individuals with ADHD. In this way, it can pinpoint the factors contributing to a practical urban space that assists children with ADHD in a neighbourhood. To understand how to design for children with ADHD, one must first understand what ADHD is and how it affects children in families and their communities. Doing so can help identify the necessity to address the symptoms of ADHD in the urban landscape. Secondly, a neighbourhood analysis is conducted to understand how to design for the neighbourhood of Elmwood in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Through the analysis of ADHD and Elmwood, a universal design can address and respond to the symptoms of ADHD in children to enhance the overall outdoor environment for all.

This document examines food sovereignty though an interior design lens in the province of Manitoba, Canada, by way of RASOI, a community food center located at 814 Main Street in Point Douglas, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The design framework for the community center is based on contemporary design theories and concepts that address the issue of food sovereignty. These issues is informed by writers and theorists including Nettie Wiebe, Kevin Wipf, Pat Vanderkooy, Valerie Tarasuk, Carolyn Dimitri, Stephen Penner, and Dawn Morrison. Additionally, patterns of production and consumption of foodways are explored to further understanding of Point Douglas journey towards food sovereignty. To guide the design of the community center, the focus is on Canadian Indigenous, contemporary Western, and Kashmiri foodways. Each contributes something different: traditional Indigenous culinary values informed by Jaime Cidro and Tabitha Martens; new urban farming technologies in the case of Western foodways from Sarvenaz Pakravan; and insertion of the author’s Kashmiri culture for comparison. RAOSI focuses on providing equitable opportunities to Point Douglas through production spaces centered around indoor urban agriculture. The design of spaces for food distribution furthers food sovereignty and community connection through activities that gather, teach, and strengthen traditional Canadian Indigenous food knowledge. The convergence of traditional Canadian Indigenous, Western, and Kashmiri customs is fostered through the theories and concepts of third space by Homi K Bhabha, transculturation by, by Mary Louise Pratt, Two-eyed Seeing by Elder Albert Marshall, and lastly Nicole Bell and Robin Wall Kimmerer’s analysis of Bimaadiziwin. Additionally, sustainable strategies from Janine Benyus’s description of biomimicry and Graeme Brooker and Sally Stone’s discussion of adaptive reuse influence the sustainable design strategies within the building to blend Indigenous values and Western technologies

As we advance toward an interconnected metaverse, seamless transitions between physical and virtual experiences offer new educational opportunities. This study examines possibilities of using immersive games, in environmental education. It is focused on involving users in ecological stories and problem-solving in the Whitemouth River Watershed (WMR). Virtual landscape design and game software have been used to develop a video game that enhances ecological understanding among middle school students. It begins by giving an overview of metaverse concepts, game design principles and environmental storytelling techniques; illustrating how video games can represent landscapes and enhance ecological understanding to encourage the preservation and conservation of particular environments. The document concludes by presenting the educational video game developed for the WMR area, detailing its storyboard, interface, and missions. It also includes the author’s reflections on the entire process of using a game engine to create a virtual environmental experience and its potential future applications in landscape architecture.

Southern Manitoba used to contain multiple marsh and bog wetlands. The wetlands were drained during the early 20th Century to increase the amount of arable land and attract more people to the province. These wetlands provided critical ecological functions such as flood mitigation, water filtration, and increased biodiversity. Since artificial waterways drained the wetlands, the surface water quality of the receiving waterbodies has suffered, with Lake Winnipeg taking the brunt of it. Two research questions drive this practicum: how can we, as landscape architects, integrate ecologically functioning wetlands into major tributaries of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers to improve their water quality? Given its physio-geographical specifics, what form might these take within the Red River Valley? In response to the prior questions, a constructed wetland design was proposed along a portion of the Norquay Channel. The agricultural landscape of the Red River Valley creates different various constraints for the design. The design includes important characteristics of natural wetlands, such as gentle slopes to facilitate the growth of wetland vegetation and a sediment deposition pond, all while working within a compact space to minimize the amount of agricultural land affected. Since the impact of the individual design site on improving Lake Winnipeg’s water quality would be limited, a more significant regional intervention is needed and proposed. Other fourth and fifth-order waterways, similar to that of the Norquay Channel, are proposed for similar interventions. Complete data from 2022 for surface water quality and water flow are used to estimate the impact of the individual design site on the nutrient loading of subsequent waterways. Two leading nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus, could potentially be reduced within the wetlands by 46 to 56% and 70 to 89%, respectively.
