1. Development of a laser-wire beam profile monitor for PETRA-III and CLIC

Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CUC) is a proposed electron-positron collider with a centre- of-mass energy of 0.5 to 5 TeV, optimised for a nominal centre-of-mass energy of 3 TeV, at high luminosities exceeding 1034 cm-2s-J. The high beam charges in the CUC beams make classical techniques for measuring the transverse beam size such as optical transition radiation (OTR) screens or wire scanners very difficult, which necessitates the use of non-invasive beam- size monitors. The laser-wire is a system that meets these requirements; it uses inverse Compton scattering to determine transverse beam-sizes by scanning a laser beam across the electron beam. This thesis describes how such a laser-wire system was installed and operated at PETRA-III at DESY, which uses an automated mirror to scan a Q-switched laser pulse across the electron beam and is developed from the system previously operated at PETRA-II. The measurements of key performance parameters are described and used in determining the emittance of the PETRA-III beam. The thesis includes a detailed investigation of the laser .' system as well as the collision measurements. Furthermore, simulations were carried out to design a similar system for the proposed transfer line of the CUC Drive-Beam and the necessary baseline characteristics of such a system are described.

Abstract

In order to study the feasibility of Optical Transition (OTR) and Diffraction (ODR) Radiation based profile measurement for the future electron-positron linear colliders (ILC, CLIC) a new dedicated instrument is under development at CERN to be installed in KEK-ATF2 beam line in fall 2015. To optimize sensitivity to micron and sub-micron beam sizes, we plan to observe ODR/OTR in the visible-UV wavelength range, down to approximately 150 nm. ODR light will be produced by narrow (25-500 μm) slits with non-uniform reflectivity. To improve our knowledge on the complex pattern produced by ODR, a preparatory experiment is being conducted on the CTF3 CALIFES beam line (CERN). This device produces interferences between two OTR screens in the visible optical range with the possibility to control the distance between them, i.e. to probe the shadowing region. Abstract

Six UK institutes are engaged in a collaborative R&D; programme with CERN aimed at demonstrating key aspects of technology feasibility for the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). We give an overview and status of the R&D; being done on: 1) Drive-beam components: quadrupole magnets and the beam phase feed-forward prototype. 2) Beam instrumentation: stripline and cavity beam position monitors, an electro-optical longitudinal bunch profile monitor, and laserwire and diffraction and transition radiation monitors for transverse beam-size determination. 3) Beam delivery system and machine-detector interface design, including beam feedback/control systems and crab cavity design and control. 4) RF structure design. In each case, where applicable, we report on the status of prototype systems and performance tests with beam at the CTF3, ATF2 and CesrTA test facilities, including plans for future experiments.
