Aims: This research was performed to investigate the influence of clay and humic acid on Escherichia coli O157 survival in model soils. Additionally, the influence of pH and humic acid on E. coli O157 in liquid culture was investigated. Methods and Results: Artificial soil microcosms were prepared with sand, kaolinite, bentonite and humic acid. Artificial soil microcosms pH was adjusted (6·0–7·0) with aluminium sulphate before E. coli O157 inoculation. After 56 days of incubation at 30°C, significant differences in E. coli O157 log CFU per gram were observed between 0 and 1000 ppm (P < 0·0001) and 0 and 5000 ppm (P < 0·0001) humic acid in 1·5% clay soils, but not in 7·5 or 15% clay soils. Significant differences (P < 0·05) in E. coli O157 log CFU per ml were observed in liquid culture influenced by humic acid concentrations after 8 h at 37°C. Conclusions: The developed model soils support E. coli O157 populations over 28 days, and higher clay soils may aid in E. coli O157 survival. Significance and Impact of the Study: These results provide insights into physicochemical properties of soil that may influence E. coli O157 in the environment and help explain E. coli O157 survival in various soils and geographical regions. 11. An in vitro model for assessing effective scrapie decontamination

Scrapie infectivity enters the environment via a multiplicity of routes from infected animals. Environmentally associated scrapie persists on farms when infected animals have been removed and is particularly resistant to disinfection. Infectivity within the farm is not adequately removed by current recommended guidelines for farm decontamination. We describe an in vitro method for modelling decontamination, specifically the removal of scrapie prions from the surface of concrete fomites within buildings that have housed scrapie infected animals. Concrete that had been spiked with low amounts of a diluted scrapie positive brain homogenate was sampled before and after decontamination. Extracts were used to seed a semi-quantitative serial protein misfolding cyclic amplification assay (sPMCA). We demonstrate that methods currently recommended for prion decontamination result in inadequate reduction of prion seeding activity within this in vitro assay. Effective treatment was achieved using repeat dosing of surfaces with 20,000 ppm available chlorine for 4 h.

A partial wave analysis of pbar-p -> eta-eta-pizero data from the Crystal Barrel experiment is made in terms of s-channel resonances. The decay channels a_0(980)-eta, f_0(1770)-pi and f_0(2105)-pi provide evidence for two I = 1 J^{PC} = 0^{-+} resonances. The first has mass M =2360 +- 25 MeV and width Gamma = 300^{+100}_{-50} MeV, and the second M =2070 \pm 35 MeV, Gamma = 310^{+100}_{-50} MeV. There is also evidence for a J^{PC} = 2^{-+} state with M = 2005 +- 15 MeV and Gamma = 200 +- 40 MeV, decaying strongly to a_0(980)-pi., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figues

An analysis of data on pbar-p -> eta-eta-pizero-pizero is presented at pbar beam momenta 600 to 1940 MeV/c. There is evidence for an I = 1, J^PC = 2^-+ resonance in eta-eta-pizero with mass M = 1880 +- 20 MeV and width 255 +- 45 MeV, decaying strongly a2(1320)-eta; it is too strong to be explained as the high mass tail of \pi_2(1670) -> a2(1320)-eta. There is tentative evidence also for weak decays to f_0(1500)\pi. It makes a natural partner to the eta 2(1860)., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Data on pbar-p -> 3eta for beam momenta 600--1940 MeV/c are presented. The strongest channel is f_0(1500)-eta from the initial pbar-p state 1S0. Together with eta-pizero-pizero data, the 3eta data determine the branching ratio BR[f_0(1500) -> eta-eta]/BR[f_0(1500) -> pizero-pizero] = 0.42+-0.09. They are consistent with a dominant contribution from an I=0, C=+1 J^{PC} = 0^{-+} resonance observed earlier in the eta-pizero-pizero data; from the combined eta-pizero-pizero and 3eta data, its mass is M = 2320 \pm 15 MeV and its width Gamma = 230+-35 MeV., Comment: One of 10 sets of data fitted to pbar-p in flight -> I=0 C=+1; 11 pages, 6 figures

A partial wave analysis is presented of Crystal Barrel data on pbar-p -> pizero-pizero, eta-eta and eta-etaprime from 600 to 1940 MeV/c, combined with earlier data on d\sigma /d\Omega and P for pbar-p->piminus-piplus. The following s-channel I=0 resonances are identified: (i) J^{PC} = 5^{--} with mass and width (M,\Gamma) at (2295+-30,235^{+65}_{-40}) MeV, (ii) J^{PC} = 4^{++} at (2020+-12, 170+-15) MeV and (2300+-25, 270+-50) MeV, (iii) 3D3 JPC = 3^{--} at (1960+-15, 150+-25) MeV and (2210+-4$, 360+-55) MeV, and a 3G3 state at (2300 ^{+50}_{-80}, 340+-150) MeV, (iv) JPC = 2^{++} at (1910+-30, 260+-40) MeV, (2020+-30, 275+-35) MeV, (2230+-30, 245+-45) MeV, and (2300+-35, 290+-50) MeV, (v) JPC = 1^{--} at (2005+-40, 275+-75) MeV, and (2165+-40, 160 ^{+140}_{-70}) MeV, and (vi) JPC = 0^{++} at (2005+-30, 305+-50) MeV, (2105+-15, 200+-25) MeV, and (2320+-30, 175+-45) MeV. In addition, there is a less well defined 6^{++} resonance at 2485+-40 MeV, with Gamma = 410+-90 MeV. For every JP, almost all these resonances lie on well defined linear trajectories of mass squared v. excitation number. The slope is 1.10+-0.03 Gev^2 per excitation. The f_0(2105) has strong coupling to eta-\eta, but much weaker coupling to pizero-pizero. Its flavour mixing angle between q-qbar and s-sbar is (59-71.6)deg, i.e. dominant decays to s-sbar. Such decays and its strong production in pbar-p interactions strongly suggest exotic character., Comment: Makes available the combined fit to Crystal Barrel data on pbar-p -> 2-body final states. 29 pages, 11 figures. Prominent K (K) over bar resonances observed in the in-flight annihilation of p (p) over bar into K+K-pi(0) include f(2)(1270), f(0)(1500), f(2)'(1525), phi(1680)/rho(1700) and a state at 1750 MeV/c(2) consistent with f(0)(1710). The reaction cross sections sigma((p) over barp -> X(K+K-)pi(0)) are obtained by means of a partial wave analysis. When these are combined with known K (K) over bar partial widths, the resulting production rates of presumably non-n (n) over bar states, X = f(0) (1710) and f(2)'(1525), are found to be suppressed by an order of magnitude compared to f(0)(1500) and f(2)(1270), respectively
