The increased prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has placed a significant emotional and psychological burden on mothers. We explored the association between the severity of ASD symptoms in children and the mental health of their mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study included 1,924 mothers of children with ASD, enrolled in a web-based cross-sectional survey over 85 consecutive days to gather clinical and sociodemographic data. The severity of ASD symptoms was obtained according to the children's age. Using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS-21) scale, we found that 35.8 percent of mothers experienced both anxiety and depression. A high education level and a high family income reduced the chance of concurrent anxiety and depression. Conversely, unemployment, a child using psychiatric medication, and higher severity of ASD symptoms increased the chance. Notably, the severity of the ASD symptom was the sole predictor of maternal co-occurring anxiety and depression across all age groups (<3 years aOR = 2.04, 95%CI 1.07–3.89; 3–5 years aOR = 2.76, 95%CI 1.67–4.56; ≥ 6 years aOR = 1.61, 95%CI 1.04–2.50). Recognizing the challenges associated with ASD leads to greater acceptance and tailored interventions, ultimately improving the overall well-being of both individuals with ASD and their mothers. The association of diabetes with increased large artery stiffness is not definitively established. We aimed to describe the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) in participants with and without diabetes and whether the cf-PWV could vary among the different laboratory-based criteria used. A cross-sectional analysis using baseline data from 13,912 adults was used. cf-PWV as well as anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical data were measured. Diabetes was defined by previous medical diagnosis, medication use, fasting glucose, an oral glucose tolerance test (GTT), or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). The prevalence of diabetes was 18.7%, higher in men than in women. After adjustment, participants with diabetes showed higher cf-PWV (men: 9.7 ± 1.7 vs 9.4 ± 1.7 m/s, P <.05; women: 9.4 ± 1.6 vs 9.1 ± 1.7 m/s, P <.05). We observed a progressive increase in cf-PWV as >1 laboratory-based criterion for diabetes diagnosis was reached. Also, participants with diabetes with alterations in any laboratory-based criteria had higher cf-PWV than participants without diabetes, regardless of sex. In summary, diabetes is associated with higher cf-PWV as is each laboratory-based parameter used for its diagnosis. These results support the strong consequences of glucose dysregulation on the vascular system and provide evidence to screen all parameters involved in glycemic metabolism to improve vascular health. Background Socio-economic disparities account for changes in the lipid profile in developing countries. We aimed to investigate the association between blood lipids and socio-economic and educational strata in adults not taking lipid-lowering medications. Methods A cross-sectional, population-based study enrolled 1614 individuals not taking lipid-lowering medications. Sociodemographic characteristics, monthly income, education level and the number of consumer goods available at home were obtained and individuals were classified into five socio-economic categories. Blood lipids were obtained in fasting participants. Results In men, the higher the socio-economic or educational stratum, the higher the total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and triglyceride (TG) levels and the lower the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), after controlling for age, body mass index, hypertension, smoking habit and physical activity. In women, the higher socio-economic strata were associated with elevated total cholesterol and HDL-c, while lower total cholesterol, LDL-c and TG levels were found in those with higher education levels. Also, individuals in the upper socio-economic strata had higher levels of total cholesterol and LDL-c, showing more than two times higher odds of having multiple alterations in blood lipids (men: OR 2.99 [95% CI 1.23 to 5.07]; women: OR 2.31 [95% CI 1.09 to 5.83]). Conclusions Dyslipidemia is highly prevalent in developing countries. Individuals in the highest socio-economic category are the ones at higher risk for dyslipidemia. Health risks faced by peasant farmers may vary depending on the type of agriculture they practice. This study examined the association between suicide ideation and exposure to pesticides by comparing two groups of peasant farmers of both sexes living in the semi-arid region of the north of Minas Gerais, Brazil: exposed to pesticides and adopting agroecological practices without the use of pesticides. Group participants were selected using convenience sampling and data was collected using a previously validated questionnaire administered through face-to-face interviews. Bivariate analysis was performed, followed by logistic regression. A total of 547 peasant farmers were interviewed (311 in the group exposed to pesticides and 236 in the group adopting agroecological practices). Respondents from the group exposed to pesticides were more likely to report suicidal ideation (OR=2.30; 95%CI 1.16-4.56), harmful alcohol consumption (OR=2.30; 95%CI 1.18-4.48), and lifetime acute pesticide poisoning (OR=8.58; 95%CI 2.98-24.72). The findings suggest that agricultural practices that lead to chronic pesticide exposure are associated with a greater likelihood of suicide ideation, regardless of previous episodes of acute pesticide poisoning or harmful alcohol consumption. • We defined the sex- and ethnicity-specific reference values for the TG/HDL-C. • A large sample of healthy adults was defined based on the whole ELSA-Brasil study. • The TG/HDL-C did not change with age, regardless of sex and ethnicity. • A sex-specific cut-off (men 2.6; women 1.7) may be used in an admixed population. • TG/HDL-C is a reliable predictor of cardiometabolic risk for clinical use. Among several lipid ratios available, the triglyceride/HDL-cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) may detect individuals at risk of cardiometabolic diseases. However, its reference values for different ethnicities are not well established. To define sex- and ethnicity-specific reference values for TG/HDL-C ratio in a large sample of healthy multiethnic adults and test its association with cardiometabolic conditions. An apparently healthy sample (n = 2,472), aged 35–74, free of major cardiovascular risk factors, was used to generate the reference values for the TG/HDL-C. Exclusion criteria were diabetes, elevated blood pressure, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, severe hypertriglyceridemia, and smoking history. Cut-offs based on the reference values were tested in the whole ELSA Brasil study (n = 13,245), stratified by sex and ethnicity, to identify cardiometabolic conditions. TG/HDL-C ratio was higher in men than women, and did not change significantly with age, regardless of sex and ethnicity. Also, black individuals showed lower levels of TG/HDL-C as compared to other ethnic groups. ROC curve showed that the cut-off based on the 75th percentile displayed better sensitivities and specificities for men and women, regardless of ethnicity. Also, the sex- and ethnicity-specific cut-offs based on the 75th percentile were significantly associated with all tested cardiometabolic conditions (hypertension, diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance). Also, we observed that the use of a single sex-specific cut-off (men: 2.6; women: 1.7) could be used for the different ethnicities with good reliability. The defined TG/HDL-C cut-offs (men: 2.6; women: 1.7) are reliable and showed good clinical applicability to detect cardiometabolic conditions in a multiethnic population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little is known about serum biomarkers in elite beach volleyball (BV) athletes. Aim: To investigate the profile of non-conventional and conventional biomarkers of BV-players in pre-Olympic and Olympic years to optimize the periodization process and performance of these athletes. Design: Case report or Brief Communication. Methods: This prospective and observational study included 2-adult gold-Olympic BV-players during the Pre-Olympic and Olympic Games. The investigation was performed according to the periodization of the training in 'training blocks': A) Initial adaptation (endurance training); B) accumulation of force and transition of force/power (strength training) and C) power (competitive target periods). Along the seasons, strength and power were monitored by a digital dynamometer. Additionally, blood samples were collected at 48h post-match or post-block. The non-conventional (leukocyte ROS production and apoptosis/necrosis indexes) and 48-conventional biomarkers were analyzed. Results: Both serum leukocyte •O2- and apoptosis/necrosis indexes of BV-athletes increased in periods of intense exercise activity compared with the periods between training blocks: 'restitution' (7-fold) or 'pre-season' (13-fold). Among all the conventional biomarkers, the results were not consistent with the periodization of the athletes. In relation to anabolic/metabolic metabolism, IGF-1/cortisol was a better profile than the testosterone/cortisol ratio. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that non-conventional markers (leukocyte •O2- production and apoptosis/necrosis) associated to IGF-1/cortisol ratio should be considered during the BV seasons to follow the performance of the players. Summary: Subendocardial viability ratio (SEVR) is a reliable index of myocardial supply‐workload balance. This study sought to investigate whether overweight/obese children and adolescents have altered SEVR and to identify which are the associated factors. This cross‐sectional study involved 789 individuals. Central haemodynamic was measured by radial applanation tonometry. Diastolic time was shorter (496 ± 122 vs 537 ± 140 ms, P = .014) and diastolic pressure‐time index was lower (2681 ± 412 vs 2814 ± 423 mm Hg seconds, P = .024) in overweight/obese compared with eutrophic girls. SEVR was lower in girls than in boys (1.34 ± 0.39 vs 1.48 ± 0.41, P = .018) but only among overweight/obese. SEVR may be affected by small variations in the temporal determinants of cardiac cycle. Background:Hypertension affects African–American adults more than any other ethnic group in the US. However, some of the black populations living outside Africa are well adapted to food and lifestyle. We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics underlying the gender-specific determinants of BP and the risk of hypertension in public-sector workers living in Angola. Materials and methods:609 volunteers (48% men) were included in this cross-sectional and descriptive study. Demographic, socioeconomic and life style data were collected during an interview. Systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) were measured, along with some anthropometric and clinical variables. Results:The prevalence of hypertension is 45.2% without difference between genders. Obesity was more prevalent in women (29.2%vs.8.9%,p < 0.05). The age-related increment in SBP is higher in women (14.2 ± 1.1vs9.5 ± 1.3 mmHg/decade,p < 0.05). In men, age, BMI, cholesterol and LDLc/HDLc explained 21, 4, 2.5 and 2.9% of SBP variability, respectively. In women, age, BMI and HC explain 27, 2 and 1% of SBP variability, respectively. The risk for hypertension is 5 × high among men aged ≥45 years, and 3.5× in those having BMI ≥25. Women aged 45 years or older have 8 × risk of hypertension and 2× the risk by having BMI ≥25. Conclusions:We found that advanced age (≥45) and overweight/obesity (BMI ≥25) are the main risk factors for hypertension in adults from Angola. Hyperuricemia is associated with cardiovascular disease and its prevalence is unknown in black Africans. This study reports hyperuricemia distribution and its association with cardiovascular risk factors in a selected Angolan population. A cross-sectional study in 585 black Africans was performed. Hyperuricemia was defined as uric acid >7.0 mg/dL in men or >5.7 mg/dL in women. Overall prevalence was 25%. Hyperuricemia was associated with hypertension (odds ratio [OR], 2.20; confidence interval [CI], 95% 1.41-3.47), high waist circumference (OR, 1.67; CI, 95% 1.05-2.65), and metabolic syndrome (OR, 1.66; CI, 95% 1.07-2.57). Compared to those with uric acid levels in the first quartile, individuals in the fourth quartile showed higher body mass index, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, and plasma levels of creatinine and triglycerides. Hypertension, high waist circumference, and metabolic syndrome were the major cardiovascular risk factors associated with hyperuricemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) has been used as the gold standard method to estimate arterial stiffness. However, its use in clinical practice is still limited because reference values for specific groups, such as black children, remain unknown. The authors aimed to investigate predictors and to propose preliminary reference values of PWV in this population. Prepubertal schoolchildren (N=157; mean age, 9.36±1.41 year) from Luanda (Angola) with normal blood pressure values and without obesity were included. Mean PWV was 5.73±0.68 m/s, with no difference between the sexes. Univariate regression analysis showed a significant (P<.05) positive correlation between PWV and height, age, body weight, lean body weight, and blood pressure. In multivariate analysis, however, only height remained an independent predictor of PWV [PWV=0.018×height (cm)+3.230]. Curves of PWV percentiles as a function of height are proposed, thus identifying normal PWV in black children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
