Abstract: Higher order mode (HOM) damping is a crucial issue for the next generation of high-current energy recovery linacs (ERLs). Beam-induced HOMs can store sufficient energy in the superconducting RF (SRF) cavities, giving rise to beam instabilities and increasing the heat load at cryogenic temperatures. To limit these effects, using HOM couplers on the cutoff tubes of SRF cavities becomes crucial to absorb beam-induced wakefields consisting of all cavity eigenmodes. The study presented here focuses on a 5-cell 801.58 MHz elliptical SRF cavity designed for the multi-turn energy recovery linac PERLE (Powerful Energy Recovery Linac for Experiments). Several coaxial coupler designs are analyzed and optimized to enhance the damping of monopole and dipole HOMs of the 5-cell cavity. The broadband performance of HOM damping is also confirmed by the time-domain wakefield and the frequency-domain simulations. In addition, the thermal behavior of the HOM couplers is investigated. Abstract: The maximum achievable beam current in an Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) is often constrained by Beam Breakup (BBU) instability. Our previous research highlighted that filling patterns have a substantial impact on BBU instabilities in multi-pass ERLs. In this study, we extend our investigation to the 8-cavity model of the Powerful ERL for Experiment (PERLE). We evaluate its requirements for damping cavity Higher Order Modes (HOMs) and propose optimal filling patterns and bunch timing strategies. Our findings reveal a significant new insight: while filling patterns are crucial, the timing of bunches also plays a critical role in mitigating HOM beam loading and BBU instability. This previously underestimated factor is essential for effective BBU control. We estimated the PERLE threshold current using both analytical and numerical models, incorporating the designed PERLE HOM dampers. During manufacturing, HOM frequencies are expected to vary slightly, with an assumed RMS frequency jitter of 0.001 between cavities for the same HOM. Introducing this jitter into our models, we found that the dampers effectively suppressed BBU instability, achieving a threshold current an order of magnitude higher than the design requirement. Our results offer new insights into ERL BBU beam dynamics and have important implications for the design of future ERLs.

Abstract: The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". Abstract: The $^{246}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) and $^{248}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) cross-sections have been measured at the Experimental Area 2 (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN with three C$_6$D$_6$ detectors. This measurement is part of a collective effort to improve the capture cross-section data for Minor Actinides (MAs), which are required to estimate the production and transmutation rates of these isotopes in light water reactors and innovative reactor systems. In particular, the neutron capture in $^{246}$Cm and $^{248}$Cm open the path for the formation of other Cm isotopes and heavier elements such as Bk and Cf and the knowledge of (n,$\gamma$) cross-sections of these Cm isotopes plays an important role in the transport, transmutation and storage of the spent nuclear fuel. The reactions $^{246}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) and $^{248}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) have been the two first capture measurements analyzed at n_TOF EAR2. Until this experiment and two recent measurements performed at J-PARC, there was only one set of data of the capture cross-sections of $^{246}$Cm and $^{248}$Cm, that was obtained in 1969 in an underground nuclear explosion experiment. In the measurement at n_TOF a total of 13 resonances of $^{246}$Cm between 4 and 400 eV and 5 of $^{248}$Cm between 7 and 100 eV have been identified and fitted. The radiative kernels obtained for $^{246}$Cm are compatible with JENDL-5, but some of them are not with JENDL-4, which has been adopted by JEFF-3.3 and ENDF/B-VIII.0. The radiative kernels obtained for the first three $^{248}$Cm resonances are compatible with JENDL-5, however, the other two are not compatible with any other evaluation and are 20% and 60% larger than JENDL-5.

Settings: Outpatients referred at Pain Unit of San Vincenzo Hospital in Taormina (Italy), between September 2014 and January 2016. Subjects: Eleven FBSS patients diagnosed with neuropathic pain using the Douleur Neuropathique 4 questionnaire and suffering from moderate to severe chronic refractory pain, and undergoing treatment with SCS and a combination of THC/CBD for 12 consecutive months. Materials and methods: All the included patients discontinued previous unsuccessful therapy at least 2 months before the beginning of the cannabinoid therapy, with the exception of the SCS that was continued. Patients received a fixed dosage of cannabinoid agonists (THC/CBD) that could be increased subjective to pain control response. A Brief Pain Inventory questionnaire was administered to measure pain and its interference with characteristic dimensions of feelings and functions. The duration of treatment with SCS and THC/CBD combination was 12 months. Results: Effective pain management as compared to baseline result was achieved in all the cases studied. The positive effect of cannabinoid agonists on refractory pain was maintained during the entire duration of treatment with minimal dosage titration. Abstract: Abstract Background Multicomponent interventions based on a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) could promote active aging and improve health status in older people with Noncommunicable Chronic Diseases (NCDs), but conflicting evidences are available. Aim To evaluate the efficacy of a CGA-based multicomponent personalized preventive program (PPP) in reducing unplanned hospitalization rates during 12-month follow-up in community-dwelling older people with NCDs. Materials and methods In this randomized clinical trial (RCT), 1216 older adults recruited by 33 general practitioners (GPs) will be randomly allocated to intervention group (IG) or usual care control group (CG). The IG will receive a multicomponent PPP developed on the findings of the CGA-based Multidimensional Prognostic Index short-form (Brief-MPI), including structured interventions to improve functional, physical, cognitive, and nutritional status, to monitor NCDs and vaccinations, and to prevent social isolation. Participants in the CG will receive usual care. Brief-MPI, resilience, and health-related quality of life will be assessed after 6 and 12 months. Moreover, saliva samples will be collected at baseline in IG to measure biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, and oral microbiome. Expected results The CGA-based PPP might reduce unplanned hospitalization rates and potentially institutionalization rates, emergency department (ED) and unplanned GP visits, and mortality. Further outcomes explored in the IG will be the adherence to PPP, resilience, health-related quality of life, and multidimensional frailty as assessed by the Brief-MPI. Conclusions Results will suggest whether the CGA-based multicomponent PPP is able to improve specific outcomes in a primary care setting. Abstract: Abstract Many studies support the idea that sarcopenic obesity (SO) could be considered a potential risk factor for negative health outcomes. These results have been inconsistent, and no umbrella reviews exist regarding this topic. Several databases until November 2023 were searched for systematic reviews with meta‐analysis of observational studies (cross‐sectional, case–control and prospective). For each association, random‐effects summary effect sizes with correspondent 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were evaluated using the GRADE tool. Among the 213 papers initially screened, nine systematic reviews with meta‐analysis were included, for a total of 384 710 participants. In cross‐sectional and case–control studies, 30 different outcomes were analysed, and 18 were statistically significant. In any population addressed in cross‐sectional and case–control studies, compared with non‐SO, SO increased the prevalence of cognitive impairment (k = 3; odds ratio [OR] = 3.46; 95% CI: 2.24–5.32; high certainty of evidence), coronary artery disease (k = 2; OR = 2.48; 95% CI: 1.85–3.31) and dyslipidaemia (k = 3; OR = 2.50; 95% CI: 1.51–4.15). When compared with sarcopenia or obesity, the results were conflicting. In prospective studies, the association between SO—compared with non‐SO—and other negative outcomes was supported by low/very low certainty of evidence and limited to a few conditions. Besides, no comparison with sarcopenia or obesity was provided. Finally, only a few studies have considered muscle function/physical performance in the diagnostic workup. SO could be considered a risk factor only for a few conditions, with the literature mainly based on cross‐sectional and case–control studies. Future studies with clear definitions of SO are needed for quantifying the importance of SO—particularly when compared with the presence of only sarcopenia or obesity—and the weight of muscle function/physical performance in its definition.

To provide an updated and comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis on the MEST gene methylation pattern in patients with abnormal sperm parameters compared to men with normal parameters. Materials and Methods: This meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023397056) and performed following the MOOSE guidelines for Meta-analyses and Systematic Reviews of Observational Studies and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P). Only original articles evaluating MEST gene methylation in spermatozoa from patients with infertility or abnormalities in one or more sperm parameters compared to fertile or normozoospermic men were included. Abstract: In several elementary particle scenarios, self-dual fields emerge as fundamental degrees of freedom. Some examples are the $D = 2$ chiral boson, $D = 10$ Type IIB supergravity, and $D = 6$ chiral tensor multiplet theory. For those models, a novel variational principle has been proposed in the work of Ashoke Sen. The coupling to supergravity of self-dual models in that new framework is rather peculiar to guarantee the decoupling of unphysical degrees of freedom. We generalize this technique to the self-dual super Maxwell gauge theory in $D = 4$ Euclidean spacetime both in the component formalism and the superspace. We use the geometric tools of rheonomy and integral forms since they are very powerful geometrical techniques for the extension to supergravity. We show the equivalence between the two formulations by choosing a different integral form defined using a Picture Changing Operator. That leads to a meaningful action functional for the variational equations. In addition, we couple the model to a non-dynamical gravitino to extend the analysis slightly beyond the free case. Abstract: Background: The $^{14}$N(n,p)$^{14}$C reaction is of interest in neutron capture therapy, where nitrogen-related dose is the main component due to low-energy neutrons, and in astrophysics, where 14N acts as a neutron poison in the s-process. Several discrepancies remain between the existing data obtained in partial energy ranges: thermal energy, keV region and resonance region. Purpose: Measuring the 14N(n,p)14C cross section from thermal to the resonance region in a single measurement for the first time, including characterization of the first resonances, and providing calculations of Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS). Method: Time-of-flight technique. Experimental Area 2 (EAR-2) of the neutron time-of-flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN. $^{10}$B(n,${\alpha}$)$^7$Li and $^{235}$U(n,f) reactions as references. Two detection systems running simultaneously, one on-beam and another off-beam. Description of the resonances with the R-matrix code sammy. Results: The cross section has been measured from sub-thermal energy to 800 keV resolving the two first resonances (at 492.7 and 644 keV). A thermal cross-section (1.809$\pm$0.045 b) lower than the two most recent measurements by slightly more than one standard deviation, but in line with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3 evaluations has been obtained. A 1/v energy dependence of the cross section has been confirmed up to tens of keV neutron energy. The low energy tail of the first resonance at 492.7 keV is lower than suggested by evaluated values, while the overall resonance strength agrees with evaluations. Conclusions: Our measurement has allowed to determine the $^{14}$N(n,p) cross-section over a wide energy range for the first time. We have obtained cross-sections with high accuracy (2.5 %) from sub-thermal energy to 800 keV and used these data to calculate the MACS for kT = 5 to kT = 100 keV., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: With the aim of measuring the $^{235}$U(n,f) cross section at the n\_TOF facility at CERN over a wide neutron energy range, a detection system consisting of two fission detectors and three detectors for neutron flux determination was realized. The neutron flux detectors are Recoil Proton Telescopes (RPT), based on scintillators and solid state detectors, conceived to detect recoil protons from the neutron-proton elastic scattering reaction. This system, along with a fission chamber and an array of parallel plate avalanche counters for fission event detection, was installed for the measurement at the n\_TOF facility in 2018, at CERN. An overview of the performances of two RPTs - especially developed for this measurement - and of the parallel plate avalanche counters are described in this article. In particular, the characterization in terms of detection efficiency by Monte Carlo simulations and response to neutron beam, the study of the background, dead time correction and characterization of the samples, are reported. The results of the present investigation show that the performances of these detectors are suitable for accurate measurements of fission reaction cross sections in the range from 10 to 450~MeV.

Therefore, with this research, we aimed to investigate the potential association between the main work done during the life with frailty and pre-frailty among participants 60 years and older of the UK Biobank study. Methods: Frailty and pre-frailty presence were ascertained using a model including 5 indicators (weakness, slowness, weight loss, low physical activity, and exhaustion); the main employment status was ascertained using self-reported information. The association between frailty and main work was explored using an ordinal logistic regression model and reported as odds ratios (ORs) with their 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). Abstract: OBJECTIVES Programmatic assessment approaches can be extended to the design of allied health professions training, to enhance the learning of trainees. The Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine worked with assessment specialists at the Australian Council for Educational Research and Amplexa Consulting, to revise their medical physics and radiopharmaceutical science training programs. One of the central aims of the revisions was to produce a training program that provides standardized training support to their registrars throughout the 3 years, better supporting their registrars to successfully complete the program in the time frame through providing timely and constructive feedback on the registrar's progression. METHODS We used the principles of programmatic assessment to revise the assessment methods and progression decisions in the three training programs. RESULTS We revised the 3-year training programs for diagnostic imaging medical physics, radiation oncology medical physics and radiopharmaceutical science in Australia and New Zealand, incorporating clear stages of training and associated progression points. CONCLUSIONS We discuss the advantages and difficulties that have arisen with this implementation. We found 5 key elements necessary for implementing programmatic assessment in these specialized contexts: embracing blurred boundaries between assessment of and for learning, adapting the approach to each specialized context, change management, engaging subject matter experts, and clear communication to registrars/trainees.

Abstract: Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is a common cause of amenorrhea and chronic anovulation in adolescent girls and young women, diagnosed after excluding other organic causes. It is commonly associated with calorie restriction, excessive physical exercise, and psychosocial stress. These stressors alter the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, leading to a chronic condition of hypoestrogenism and significant health consequences. Recent evidence has highlighted a genetic predisposition to FHA that could explain interindividual variability in stress response. Indeed, not all women experience FHA in response to stress. Rare variants in genes associated with idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism have been identified in women with FHA, suggesting that these mutations may contribute to an increased susceptibility of women to the trigger of stress exposure. FHA appears today as a complex disease resulting from the combination of genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and epigenetic changes. Furthermore, the genetic background of FHA allows for the hypothesis of a male counterpart. Despite the paucity of data, preliminary findings indicate that an equivalent condition of FHA exists in men, warranting further investigation. This narrative review aims to summarize the recent genetic evidence contributing to the pathophysiology of FHA and to raise awareness on a possible male counterpart.

Abstract: Abstract Remdesivir (RDV) was the first Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medication for COVID-19, with discordant data on efficacy in reducing mortality risk and disease progression. In the context of a dynamic and rapidly changing pandemic landscape, the utilization of real-world evidence is of utmost importance. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of RDV on patients who have been admitted to two university referral hospitals in Italy due to COVID-19. All patients older than 18 years and hospitalized at two different universities (Bari and Palermo) were enrolled in this study. To minimize the effect of potential confounders, we used propensity score matching with one case (Remdesivir) and one control that never experienced this kind of intervention during hospitalization. Mortality was the primary outcome of our investigation, and it was recorded using death certificates and/or medical records. After selecting by literature mining the most relevant RNAs differentially expressed in biofluids from PCa patients, we evaluated their discriminatory power in samples of unfiltered urine from 50 PCa and 50 BPH patients using both real-time PCR and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR). Additionally, we also optimized a protocol for urine sample manipulation and RNA extraction. This two-way validation study allowed us to establish that miRNAs (i.e., miR-27b-3p, miR-574-3p, miR-30a-5p, and miR-125b-5p) are more efficient biomarkers for PCa compared to long RNAs (mRNAs and lncRNAs) (e.g., PCA3, PCAT18, and KLK3), as their dysregulation was consistently reported in the whole urine of patients with PCa compared to those with BPH in a statistically significant manner regardless of the quantification methodology performed. Moreover, a significant increase in diagnostic performance was observed when molecular signatures composed of different miRNAs were considered. Hence, the abovementioned circulating ncRNAs represent excellent potential non-invasive biomarkers in urine capable of effectively distinguishing individuals with PCa from those with BPH, potentially reducing cancer overdiagnosis.

Abstract: This review explored the impact of physical literacy programs designed to engage two- to five-year-old preschool children. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was used. Six EBSCO host databases were searched for the period 2011 to April 2021 using the search terms "physical literacy," "early childhood," and "impact." Articles were excluded if physical literacy was not the focal intervention. The final data set consisted of seven-peer reviewed articles meeting the eligibility criteria and quality assessment for this review. Three themes were created using Braun and Clark's (2006) approach to thematic analysis: Holistic benefits of physical literacy, Barriers to physical literacy and Education begins at home. Early childhood physical literacy programs provide holistic benefits for children; however, further research is needed in an Australian context. Families and community members working in the early childhood sector could benefit from further education and training to improve physical literacy awareness.

Abstract: IntroductionMetabolic reprogramming is a hallmark feature of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). A pancreatic juice (PJ) metabolic signature has been reported to be prognostic of oncological outcome for PDAC. Integration of PJ profiling with transcriptomic and spatial characterization of the tumor microenvironment would help in identifying PDACs with peculiar vulnerabilities.MethodsWe performed a transcriptomic analysis of 26 PDAC samples grouped into 3 metabolic clusters (M_CL) according to their PJ metabolic profile. We analyzed molecular subtypes and transcriptional differences. Validation was performed by multidimensional imaging on tumor slides.ResultsPancreatic juice metabolic profiling was associated with PDAC transcriptomic molecular subtypes (p=0.004). Tumors identified as M_CL1 exhibited a non-squamous molecular phenotype and demonstrated longer survival. Enrichment analysis revealed the upregulation of immune genes and pathways in M_CL1 samples compared to M_CL2, the group with worse prognosis, a difference confirmed by immunofluorescence on tissue slides. Enrichment analysis of 39 immune signatures by xCell confirmed decreased immune signatures in M_CL2 compared to M_CL1 and allowed a stratification of patients associated with longer survival.DiscussionPJ metabolic fingerprints reflect PDAC molecular subtypes and the immune microenvironment, confirming PJ as a promising source of biomarkers for personalized therapy.

42. Tensile behavior of polycarbonate: Key aspects for accurate constitutive modelling and simulation

Abstract: Polycarbonate (PC) is a thermoplastic polymer used in many engineering applications such as safety devices and aerospace components. However, the unique behavior of PC under tensile load and its effects on the estimation of its constitutive curve are often overlooked in the literature, neglecting to consider crucial aspects of the characterization process. This work carries out a comprehensive analysis of the mechanical behavior of PC to understand the key points for accurate constitutive modeling and simulation of its static tensile performance, including its unconventional deformation mechanisms. The work starts from the accurate analysis of a representative experimental static tensile test on a rectangular section PC specimen and the evaluation of its true stress-strain curve. This analysis, carried out considering the classic length-based approach and the more accurate area-based approach, makes it possible to evaluate in detail the peculiar tensile behavior of this material. The mathematical form of the PC true stress-strain curve is then justified and the coincidence of the obtained length-based and area-based estimates of the same is demonstrated. Then, based on the in-depth understanding of the dynamics underlying the mechanical behavior of PC and making use of FEM simulations, the key points for obtaining its constitutive curve are defined. It is demonstrated that the constitutive curve is able to completely determine the behavior of PC, including its peculiar deformation mechanism. It is also highlighted which specific characteristics of the constitutive curve are critical in affecting various aspects of the material's behavior. The final constitutive curve of PC at hand is then obtained with an inverse approach, capable of accurately simulating all aspects of its tensile behavior. The validity of the proposed modelling key points is then confirmed, effectively explaining the underlying phenomena controlling the tensile behavior of PC and massively reducing uncertainty in the estimation of its constitutive curve starting from its area-based true curve.

Abstract: IntroductionFew studies have evaluated the psychological distress of COVID-19 in kidney transplantation and the psychological impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on kidney transplant recipients is not yet well understood. The present study aimed to investigate the change in symptom burden and health-related quality of life in the two years after initial assessment, by outlining the change over time of symptoms at 12 and 24 months of follow-up.MethodsThis is a follow-up study. We performed a study published in 2021 (phase 1 of COVID-19); of the 89 kidney transplant recipients evaluated in this study, 60 completed the 12 months follow-up (March 2021 June 2021, phase 2 of COVID-19) and 57 completed the 24 months follow-up (March 2022 June 2022, post COVID-19). The same tools as in previous study were administered: the ad hoc questionnaire on emotional state and psychophysical well-being during COVID-19, the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire (MHQ) to provide a simple and rapid quantification of the psychological and somatic symptoms and the Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36) was used to assess health-related quality of life.ResultsCompared to the first and second phase of COVID-19, the mean score of quality of life variables were higher in the post COVID-19 phase; thus the recipients physical health, mental health and their perception of their general health improved. Regarding the psychopathology variables the levels of Anxiety, Depression and Phobia in the Post COVID-19 phase decreased, while the Somatization score was higher. Lastly, burden of COVID-19 scores in the third phase, significantly decreased.DiscussionOur study highlights a significant association between mental health and the burden of COVID-19 pandemic in kidney transplant recipients. This study showed, a significant worsening, over time, of some specific symptoms, such as somatization and phobias. However, the results showed that depressive symptoms improved during the study period. Long-term monitoring of kidney transplant recipients therefore remains fundamental. These results confirmed the need to provide integrated multidisciplinary services to adequately address the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of the most vulnerable subjects.

Abstract: A new parasitic, mixed-field, neutron-dominated irradiation station has been recently commissioned at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). The station is installed in the Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n\_TOF) facility, taking advantage of the secondary radiation produced by the neutron spallation target. The new station allows radiation damage studies to be performed in irradiation conditions that are closer to the ones encountered during the operation of particle accelerators; the irradiation tests carried out in the station will be complementary to the standard tests on materials, usually performed with gamma sources. Samples will be exposed to neutron doses in the MGy range per year, with minimal impact on the n TOF facility operation. The station has twenty-four irradiation positions, each hosting up to 100 cm3 of sample material. In view of its proximity to the n\_TOF target, inside protective shielding, the irradiation station and its operating procedures have been carefully developed taking into account the safety of personnel and to avoid any unwanted impact on the operation of the n\_TOF facility and experiments. Due to the residual radioactivity of the whole area around the n\_TOF target and of the irradiated samples, access to the irradiation station is forbidden to human operators even when the n\_TOF facility is not in operation. Robots are used for the remote installation and retrieval of the samples, and other optimizations of the handling procedures were developed in compliance with radiation protection regulations and the aim of minimizing doses to personnel.

Abstract: The 235U(n,f) cross section was measured in a wide energy range (25 meV - 170 keV) at the n_TOF facility at CERN, relative to 6Li(n,t) and 10B(n,alpha) standard reactions, with high resolution and accuracy, with a setup based on a stack of six samples and six silicon detectors placed in the neutron beam. In this paper we report on the results in the region between thermal and 10 keV neutron energy. A resonance analysis has been performed up to 200 eV, with the code SAMMY. The resulting fission kernels are compared with the ones extracted on the basis of the resonance parameters of the most recent major evaluated data libraries. A comparison of the n_TOF data with the evaluated cross sections is also performed from thermal to 10 keV neutron energy for the energy-averaged cross section in energy groups of suitably chosen width. A good agreement is found in average between the new results and the latest evaluated data files ENDF-B/VIII and JEFF-3.3, as well as with respect to the IAEA reference files. However, some discrepancies are still present in some specific energy regions. The new dataset here presented, characterized by unprecedented resolution and accuracy, can help improving the evaluations in the Resolved Resonance Region and up to 10 keV, and reduce the uncertainties that affect this region.

50. RNA-RNA competitive interactions: a molecular civil war ruling cell physiology and diseases

Abstract: The idea that proteins are the main determining factors in the functioning of cells and organisms, and their dysfunctions are the first cause of pathologies, has been predominant in biology and biomedicine until recently. This protein-centered view was too simplistic and failed to explain the physiological and pathological complexity of the cell. About 80% of the human genome is dynamically and pervasively transcribed, mostly as non-protein-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), which competitively interact with each other and with coding RNAs generating a complex RNA network regulating RNA processing, stability, and translation and, accordingly, fine-tuning the gene expression of the cells. Qualitative and quantitative dysregulations of RNA-RNA interaction networks are strongly involved in the onset and progression of many pathologies, including cancers and degenerative diseases. This review will summarize the RNA species involved in the competitive endogenous RNA network, their mechanisms of action, and involvement in pathological phenotypes. Moreover, it will give an overview of the most advanced experimental and computational methods to dissect and rebuild RNA networks.
