1. Fox-H densities and completely monotone generalized Wright functions

Abstract

Due to their flexibility, Fox-$H$ functions are widely studied and applied to many research topics, such as astrophysics, mechanical statistic, probability, etc. Well-known special cases of Fox-$H$ functions, such as Mittag-Leffler and Wright functions, find a wide application in the theory of stochastic processes, anomalous diffusions and non-Gaussian analysis. In this paper, we focus on certain explicit assumptions that allow us to use the Fox-$H$ functions as densities. We then provide a subfamily of the latter, called Fox-$H$ densities with all moments finite, and give their Laplace transforms as entire generalized Wright functions. The class of random variables with these densities is proven to possess a monoid structure. We present eight subclasses of special cases of such densities (together with their Laplace transforms) that are particularly relevant in applications, thanks to their probabilistic interpretation. To analyze the existence conditions of Fox-$H$ functions red as well as their sign, we derive asymptotic results and their analytic extension.

Abstract

Stochastic modelling of fatigue (and other material's deterioration), as well as of cumulative damage in risk theory, are often based on compound sums of independent random variables, where the number of addends is represented by an independent counting process. We consider here a cumulative model where, instead of a renewal process (as in the Poisson case), a linear birth (or Yule) process is used. This corresponds to the assumption that the frequency of \textquotedblleft damage" increments accelerates according to the increasing number of \textquotedblleft damages". We start from the partial differential equation satisfied by its transition density, in the case of exponentially distributed addends, and then we generalize it by introducing a space-derivative of convolution type (i.e. defined in terms of the Laplace exponent of a subordinator). Then we are concerned with the solution of integro-differential equations, which, in particular cases, reduce to fractional ones. Correspondingly, we analyze the related cumulative jump processes under a general infinitely divisible distribution of the (positive) jumps. Abstract

In this paper we study the iterated birth process of which we examine the first-passage time distributions and the hitting probabilities. Furthermore, linear birth processes, linear and sublinear death processes at Poisson times are investigated. In particular, we study the hitting times in all cases and examine their long-range behavior. The time-changed population models considered here display upward (Birth process) and downward jumps (death processes) of arbitrary size and, for this reason, can be adopted as adequate models in ecology, epidemics and finance situations, under stress conditions., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

7. Space-fractional versions of the negative binomial and Polya-type processes

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce a space fractional negative binomial (SFNB) process by subordinating the space fractional Poisson process to a gamma subordinator. Its one-dimensional distributions are derived in terms of generalized Wright functions and their governing equations are obtained. It is a L\'evy process and the corresponding L\'evy measure is given. Extensions to the case of distributed order SFNB process, where the fractional index follows a two-point distribution, is analyzed in detail. The connections of the SFNB process to a space fractional Polya-type process is also pointed out. Moreover, we define and study a multivariate version of the SFNB obtained by subordinating a $d$-dimensional space-fractional Poisson process by a common independent gamma subordinator. Some applications of the SFNB process to the studies of population's growth and epidemiology are pointed out. Abstract

International audience; OBJECTIVES: To delineate the clustering of energy balance-related behaviors in adolescents and investigate whether these behaviors are associated with the household socioeconomic status and parental education level. METHODS: Two cross-sectional studies assessed information on sedentary behavior, physical activity, sugar-sweetened beverages and fruit and vegetable consumption, and sleep duration by self-reported questionnaires in adolescents (12.5-17.5 years old) from Maringa/Brazil (BRACAH Study; n = 682) and ten European cities (HELENA Study; n = 1252) from nine different countries. Gender-specific cluster analyses were performed separately for each study, applying a combination of hierarchical and non-hierarchical methods. RESULTS: Girls showed equivalent behaviors: Sedentary; Active; Unhealthy Eating; Healthy Eating; while boys differed (Brazilian: Sedentary; Active; Healthy Eating; European: Sedentary; Healthy; Unhealthy Eating). In Brazil, we found no association between socioeconomic status and parental education. In European girls, the high socioeconomic status and both parents' university degree were associated with Healthy Eating. In European boys, the high socioeconomic status was associated with Unhealthy Eating, and the mothers' university degree was associated with the Healthy cluster. CONCLUSIONS: Adolescents show Sedentary behavior, regardless of their sex, country of origin, or socioeconomic condition.

INTRODUCTION Dietary pattern (DP) analysis has emerged as an alternative and complementary approach to addressing diet-diseases associations. (1) Traditional analysis in nutritional epidemiology typically reflects diet in relation to a [...], BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To assess dietary patterns (DPs) in European adolescents and to examine their relationship with several indicators of sedentary behaviour. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A multinational cross-sectional study was carried out in 2202 adolescents (45.4% boys) aged 12.5-17.5 years. A self-reported questionnaire with information on sedentary behaviours, separately for weekdays and weekend days, and two non-consecutive 24 h-recalls were used. Principal component analysis was used to obtain DPs, and linear regression examined the association between DPs scores and sedentary behaviour. RESULTS: Four DPs for boys ('plant based', 'snacking', 'breakfast' and 'health conscious') and five DPs for girls ('confectionary and snacking', 'plant based', 'breakfast', 'animal protein' and 'health conscious') were obtained. Boys who spent >4h/day watching television (TV) had lower adherence to the 'plant based', 'breakfast' and 'health conscious' DPs, and higher adherence to the 'snacking' DP. Higher computer use and internet use for recreational reason were associated with higher adherence to the 'snacking' DP. In girls, TV viewing and using internet for recreational reasons for >4h/day was associated with higher adherence to the 'confectionary and snacking' and lower adherence with 'health conscious' DP. Also, studying between 2 and 4h during weekend days was associated with lower adherence to the 'snacking' and with higher adherence to the 'plant based' and 'breakfast' DPs. CONCLUSION: Adolescents' DPs are related with the time spent in several sedentary behaviours. Such findings may help to generate interventions focusing on decreasing unhealthy dietary habits and specific sedentary behaviours. Abstract

Background Upper limb impairment affects activity and participation in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP). Pressure garment therapy (PGT) using compressive dynamic Lycra® garments is an innovative intervention proposed for the management of cerebral palsy consequences. The PROPENSIX study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a therapy using a Lycra® sleeve as compared to a placebo sleeve to improve bi-manual performance measured by the Assisting Hand Assessment (AHA) in children with unilateral cerebral palsy. Methods The PROPENSIX trial is a multicenter, prospective, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, randomized study. One hundred children with UCP, aged from 5 to 10, are randomly assigned as soon as they are recruited in a 1:1 ratio to perform usual daily activities, especially activities involving bimanual performances, with Lycra® sleeve or placebo sleeve during 6 months. The primary endpoint is the change in bimanual performance from inclusion to 6 months, evaluated by AHA. The secondary endpoints evaluate changes from inclusion to 6 months in other dimensions of the International Classification of Functioning (ICF), upper limb movement capacity assessed by Quality of Upper Extremity Skill Test (QUEST), and health-related quality of life evaluated by Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 3.0 Cerebral Palsy Module (PedsQLTM 3.0 CP Module) and in body structures and functions domain assessed by neuro-orthopedic examination and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP). Discussion The PROPENSIX study is the largest randomized controlled trial (RCT) aiming to evaluate the efficacy of a PGT using compressive dynamic Lycra® sleeve in UCP. Enhancement of children’s bimanual performance at the end of the 6 months wear of the Lycra® sleeve should improve evidence regarding this type of treatment and expand discussion about their recommendation in clinical practice. Abstract

Screen media usage has become increasingly commonplace in daily life with children initiating themselves to screen media at an early age. Given the high prevalence of screen viewing among children worldwide, its impact on children's health has become a cause for concern. Unfortunately, little information on the independent association between sleep habits and screen time in French children is currently available. The main aim of this study was to assess possible relationships between screen time and sleep habits (quality, duration, etc.) among young middle school students in France. A total of 448 (55 % girls) 11-to-12-year-olds from 5 schools were included. Body weight and height were measured according to standard procedures and BMI percentiles were determined based on international reference values. Sleep parameters were obtained by sleep diaries and visual estimations. A sleep diary was maintained for one week to record sleeping and waking times and related information. Information on lifestyle habits (sedentary behaviours, physical activity, and dietary intake) was obtained via standardised questionnaires. Participants were 11.5 (±0.4) years of age. From total sample, 25.5 % reported screen time ≥2hours/d during school days and 62.7 % during school-free days.
