Introduction: Hospitalization is a stressful event that affects the nutritional status of adults and elderly. Inpatients with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent a vulnerable group facing an increased risk of malnutrition. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of malnutrition in Algerian inpatients with non-communicable diseases in a public hospital in Skikda (Algeria). Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive survey carried out during one month from the 15th November 2020 to the 10th December 2020, with inpatients with at least one NCD (cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases). The assessment of their nutritional status was carried out using the Subjective Global Assessment tool (SGA). Results: One hundred and five patients were included. One of two patients had at least one non communicable disease. In our study, the SGA allowed us to estimate the malnutrition prevalence at 44.76% (ranks B and C: moderate and severe malnutrition). Our study showed a length of stay (LOS) of 4.14±7.69days. Conclusion: The considerable prevalence of malnutrition was, in part, due to reduced food intake and short LOS. In order to detect and prevent malnutrition, the nutritional status assessment must be included in the routine of health care in Algeria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset. In this period, meals become exclusively nocturnal, and the traditional dishes served are often rich in fats and carbohydrates. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of Ramadan fasting on the sports activities, diet, and anthropometry of the basketball players of the clubs of eastern Algeria. Methods: This transversal study was conducted on 32 basketball players. Data were collected on the sports activities, diet (24-hour food recall, frequency of usual food consumption), and length of sleep using questionnaires. In addition, anthropometric measurements were performed. Results: The basketball players trained more frequently during normal periods compared to Ramadan (4.3±0.4 vs. 2.0±0.1 day/week; P<0.001) and hydrated in the evening during Ramadan (2.7±0.7 liters/day). The contribution of carbohydrates exceeded the recommendations. A significant difference was observed in the frequency of food consumption between normal periods and Ramadan for the fruits and vegetables group (P<0.001), fatty and sweet products (P<0.001), and beverage group (P<0.01). However, no significant difference was observed in the length of sleep between the two periods (P=0.621), and the body components did not change (weight, body mass index, brachial muscle circumference, and total muscle mass). Conclusion: According to the results, Ramadan fasting had no significant effects on the diet, sports activities, and anthropometry of the basketball players. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims: Different diagnostic tools are used in the identification of malnutrition in hospitalized patients. The aim of this article is to review the main diagnostic tools used in the assessment of nutritional status of inpatients with NCDs in the last ten years. Methods: Data needed for this review were collected through searching PubMed, Sciencedirect and Google Scholar databases, for the period from 2010 to 2020. MeSH keywords included "non-communicable diseases" "nutritional status" "nutritional status assessment" "malnutrition" "inpatients". The data were summarized and were analyzed using Content Analysis. Result: Out of 374 articles, 10 articles were included in the study. Regarding the contents extracted, data were categorized into 2 topics namely; criteria of diagnosis of malnutrition of NCDs'inpatients and tools of nutritional status assessment of NCDs'inpatients. Three criteria of diagnosis were reviewed: diagnosis of the disease, age and nutritional variables. The main tools of diagnosis are: BBT tool, GLIM criteria, GNRI, MNA, MST and MUST, NRS 2002, SGA and PG-SGA, SNAQ and anthropometric parameters. Conclusion: this review represent nutritional status assessment tools all combined in one reference that makes it easier for researchers, health professionals and nutritionists to choose the appropriate tool according to their research goals (diagnosis, prediction, evaluation), their samples (adults, elderly),and their available resources. Introduction: During the month of Ramadan, muslims change their lifestyle. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of Ramadan fasting on the energy intake and anthropometry of type 2 diabetics. Methods: Epidemiological study by questionnaire were collected before (T0), during (T1) and after (T3) Ramadan 2013. The data were collected during medical consultations in sanitary establishments in two regions of the central highlands (Boussaâda) and the south-east of Algeria (Djamaâ). The survey card concerned a food recording and anthropometry repeated during the 3 time periods mentioned before. Results: The study concerned 476 diabetics (255 women, 221 men) with the mean age of 54.9±4.7 years old. 66.4%of diabetics of Boussaâda and 61.8%of Djamaâ followed nutritional education sessions preparing for fasting (p>0.05). The number of fasting days during the month of Ramadan is 24.0±1.7days. By comparing both of the regions, no significant difference was observed in the energy intake distribution and in macronutriments of the diabetics (p>0.05). By comparing the 3 periods, the diabetics of Boussaâda had an energy intake significantly increased at T1 (p=0.000). In Djamaâ, the energy intake decreased fromT0 to T2 (p=0.000). The energy distribution of macronutrients remained stable (p>0.05) between the three periods. Body mass index, waist circumference and the waist-to-hip ratiowere significantly decreased fromT0 toT2 (p<0.05). Conclusion: Ramadan had an influence on the energy intake and anthropometry of diabetics. Food consumed during the fast-breaking meal is characterized by its richness in carbohydrates and lipids. Nutritional education sessions provide the diabetic patients deciding to fast with a chance for properly managing their condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
