Abstract

In this paper, we describe an experiment measuring low-$Q^2$ elastic electron-proton scattering using a newly developed cryogenic supersonic gas jet target in the A1 three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz Microtron. We measured the proton electric form factor within the four-momentum transfer range of $0.01\le Q^2 \le 0.045(\text{GeV/c})^2$. The experiment showed consistent results with the existing measurements. The data we collected demonstrated the feasibility of the gas jet target and the potential of future scattering experiments using high-resolution spectrometers with this gas jet target., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

A cryogenic supersonic gas jet target was developed for the MAGIX experiment at the high-intensity electron accelerator MESA. It will be operated as an internal, windowless target in the energy-recovering recirculation arc of the accelerator with different target gases, e.g., hydrogen, deuterium, helium, oxygen, argon, or xenon. Detailed studies have been carried out at the existing A1 multi-spectrometer facility at the electron accelerator MAMI. This paper focuses on the developed handling procedures and diagnostic tools, and on the performance of the gas jet target under beam conditions. Considering the special features of this type of target, it proves to be well suited for a new generation of high-precision electron scattering experiments at high-intensity electron accelerators.

Abstract

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $\overline{\rm P}$ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton-nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the \textit{Phase One} setup. Abstract

A continuous cryogenic hydrogen cluster-jet target has been developed for laser-plasma interaction studies, in particular as a source for the acceleration of protons. Major advantages of the cluster-jet target are the compatibility with pulsed high repetition lasers and the absence of debris. The cluster-jet target was characterized using the Mie-scattering technique allowing to determine the cluster size and to compare it with an empirical prediction. In addition, an estimation of the cluster beam density was performed. The system was implemented at the high power laser system ARCTURUS and first successful measurements show the acceleration of protons after irradiation by high intensity laser pulses with a repetition rate of five Hertz., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: p¯ p→ Λ¯ Λ and p¯ p→ Ξ¯ +Ξ-. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA.

Abstract

The study of baryon excitation spectra provides insight into the inner structure of baryons. So far, most of the world-wide efforts have been directed towards N∗ and Δ spectroscopy. Nevertheless, the study of the double and triple strange baryon spectrum provides independent information to the N∗ and Δ spectra. The future antiproton experiment P¯ANDA will provide direct access to final states containing a Ξ¯ Ξ pair, for which production cross sections up to μb are expected in p¯p reactions. With a luminosity of L= 10 31 cm- 2 s- 1 in the first phase of the experiment, the expected cross sections correspond to a production rate of ∼106events/day. With a nearly 4 π detector acceptance, P¯ANDA will thus be a hyperon factory. In this study, reactions of the type p¯p → Ξ¯ +Ξ∗ - as well as p¯p → Ξ¯ ∗ +Ξ- with various decay modes are investigated. For the exclusive reconstruction of the signal events a full decay tree fit is used, resulting in reconstruction efficiencies between 3 and 5%. This allows high statistics data to be collected within a few weeks of data taking.

Abstract

The study of baryon excitation spectra provides insight into the inner structure of baryons. So far, most of the world-wide efforts have been directed towards $N^*$ and $\Delta$ spectroscopy. Nevertheless, the study of the double and triple strange baryon spectrum provides independent information to the $N^*$ and $\Delta$ spectra. The future antiproton experiment PANDA will provide direct access to final states containing a $\bar{\Xi}\Xi$ pair, for which production cross sections up to $\mu$b are expected in $\bar{p}p$ reactions. With a luminosity of $L=10^{31}\,cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ in the first phase of the experiment, the expected cross sections correspond to a production rate of $\sim 10^6$ events$/$day. With a nearly $4\pi$ detector acceptance, PANDA will thus be a hyperon factory. In this study, reactions of the type $\bar{p}p\rightarrow \bar{\Xi}^+ \Xi^{*-}$ as well as $\bar{p}p\rightarrow \bar{\Xi}^{*+} \Xi^{-}$ with various decay modes are investigated. For the exclusive reconstruction of the signal events a full decay tree fit is used, resulting in reconstruction efficiencies between $3\,\%$ and $5\,\%$. Abstract

This paper reports on Monte Carlo simulation results for future measurements of the moduli of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors, vertical bar G(E)vertical bar and vertical bar G(M)vertical bar, using the (p) over barp -> mu(+)mu(-) reaction at PANDA (FAIR). The electromagnetic form factors are fundamental quantities parameterizing the electric and magnetic structure of hadrons. This work estimates the statistical and total accuracy with which the form factors can be measured at PANDA, using an analysis of simulated data within the PandaRoot software framework. The most crucial background channel is (p) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-), due to the very similar behavior of muons and pions in the detector. The suppression factors are evaluated for this and all other relevant background channels at different values of antiproton beam momentum. The signal/background separation is based on a multivariate analysis, using the Boosted Decision Trees method. An expected background subtraction is included in this study, based on realistic angular distributions of the background contribution. Systematic uncertainties are considered and the relative total uncertainties of the form factor measurements are presented.

Abstract

Capture and sequestration of CO2 released by conventional fossil fuel combustion is an urgent need to mitigate global warming. In this work, main CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) systems are reviewed, with the focus on their integration with renewables in order to achieve power plants with nearly zero CO2 emissions. Among these technologies under development, the Dry Carbonate Process shows several advantages. This manuscript analyses the integration of a CO2 sorption-desorption cycle based on Na2CO3/NaHCO3 into a coal fired power plant (CFPP) for CO2 capture with solar support for sorbent regeneration. The Dry Carbonate Process relies on the use of a dry regenerable sorbent such as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) to remove CO2 from flue gases. Na2CO3 is converted to sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) through reaction with CO2 and water steam. Na2CO3 is regenerated when NaHCO3 is heated, which yields a gas stream mostly containing CO2 and H2O. Condensation of H2O produces a pure CO2 stream suitable for its subsequent use or compression and sequestration. In this paper, the application of the Dry Carbonate CO2 capture process in a coal-based power plant is studied with the goal of optimizing CO2 capture efficiency, heat and power requirements. Integration of this CO2 capture process requires an additional heat supply which would reduce the global power plant efficiency by around 9–10%. Dry Carbonate Process has the advantage compared with other CCS technologies that requires a relatively low temperature for sorbent regeneration (< 200 °C). It allows an effective integration of medium temperature solar thermal power to assist NaHCO3 decarbonation. This integration reduces the global system efficiency drop to the consumption associated with mechanical parasitic consumption, resulting in a fossil fuel energy penalty of 3–4% (including CO2 compression). 32. Carbon capture and utilization for sodium bicarbonate production assisted by solar thermal power

Abstract

In this paper, a novel carbon capture and utilization process is proposed. It is based on using a fraction of the captured carbon dioxide to produce sodium bicarbonate, a widely used product in the chemical and food industries. The process couples the Dry Carbonate process for carbon dioxide capture with sodium bicarbonate production. Raw material is trona or sodium sesquicarbonate dehydrate, which is a relatively abundant mineral composed by approximately 46% sodium carbonate and 35% sodium bicarbonate by weight. In the process, trona is firstly converted into sodium carbonate in a fluidized bed reactor operated at 180–200 °C and 1 bar. Heat required in the fluidized bed reactor for decomposing trona can be supplied by renewable sources such as low/medium temperature solar energy or biomass. A fraction of the sodium carbonate generated is recirculated for carbon dioxide capture by means of the dry carbonate process. The rest is converted to sodium bicarbonate in a carbonating tower through the reaction with carbon dioxide and water. After separation of sodium bicarbonate and other salts from water, the sodium bicarbonate produced is suitable for direct sale. The use of renewable sources for supplying the energy required at the sorbent regenerator and for trona decomposition yields a near-zero carbon dioxide emissions global system. As case of study, carbon dioxide capture coupled to sodium bicarbonate production has been analysed for a 15 MWel coal fired power plant. Heat required in the carbon capture process penalizes the global system efficiency by a 10.2%, which is reduced just to the electricity parasitic consumption for solids transport and carbon dioxide compression (∼3%) if renewable energy sources are integrated. From an economic perspective, the penalty in electricity consumption is fully compensated by the new by-product sales. 41. The Münster cluster-jet target for the future P̅ANDA experiment

Abstract

For high precision storage ring experiments as the future P̅ANDA experiment, very sophisticated internal targets have to be used. For this purpose, a state-of-the-art cluster-jet target was developed at the University Münster. Basically, hydrogen is cooled to cryogenic temperatures and pressed through a specially shaped Laval nozzle to form a cluster-jet expanding into vacuum. Due to the stability and large mass of the clusters, a practically undisturbed flight path in vacuum of above 5 m is possible, leading to manifold possible applications, including the interaction with a storage ring beam at a distance of 2.25 m as desired for the P̅ANDA experiment. With a first prototype target, the “proof-of-principle” was delivered, and after first improvements the world record in target thickness in such large distance to the nozzle was measured. Based on this work, the final P̅ANDA cluster-jet target was developed and built up, and is presented in this article.

Abstract

Nitrites have emerged as promising therapeutic agents for cardiovascular diseases, alongside nitrates. While chronic use of organic nitrates is well recognized to lead to vascular tolerance, the tolerance associated with nitrite therapy remains incompletely understood. The aim of the present study was to investigate vascular tolerance to sodium nitrite and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Endothelium-denuded aortic rings isolated from male Balb/C mice were incubated with either the EC 50 (10 -4  mol/L) or EC 100 (10 -2  mol/L) concentration of sodium nitrite for 15 min to induce tolerance. The EC 100 concentration of sodium nitrite induced vascular tolerance. Pre-incubation with captopril and losartan effectively reversed sodium nitrite-induced tolerance. Similarly, pre-incubation with L-NAME and L-arginine prevented sodium nitrite-induced tolerance. Increased levels of reactive oxidative species (ROS) and reduced bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) were observed in tolerant aortas. Increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and decreased catalase activity were also verified in tolerant aortas. Both captopril and L-NAME prevented the increased levels of ROS observed in tolerant aortas. Furthermore, pre-incubation with catalase effectively prevented sodium nitrite-induced tolerance. Our findings suggest that sodium nitrite induces vascular tolerance through a signaling pathway involving the renin-angiotensin system, nitric oxide synthase, and ROS. Abstract

Objective and Design: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ethanol exposure on epigenetic markers in bone marrow (BM) and their impact on inflammatory response during Aspergillus fumigatus infection., Results: Chronic ethanol exposure decreased H3K27me3 enrichment in the Il6 promoter region while increased H3K4me3 enrichment in Tnf. Chimeric mice were generated by transplanting BM from mice exposed to ethanol or water. Infection of ethanol-chimeric mice culminated in higher clinical scores, although there was no effect on mortality. However, previous chronic exposure to ethanol affects persistently the inflammatory response in lung tissue, demonstrated by increased lung damage, neutrophil accumulation and IL-6, TNF and CXCL2 production in ethanol-chimeric mice, resulting in a decreased neutrophil infiltration into the alveolar space. Neutrophil killing and phagocytosis were also significantly lower. Moreover, BM derived macrophages (BMDM) from ethanol-chimeric mice stimulated with A. fumigatus conidia exhibited higher levels of TNF, CXCL2 and IL-6 release and a higher killing activity. The Il6 promoter of BMDM from ethanol-chimeric mice exhibited a reduction in H3K27me3 enrichment, a finding also observed in BM donors exposed to ethanol., Conclusions: These evidences demonstrate that prior chronic alcohol exposure of bone-marrow modify immune effector cells functions impairing the inflammatory response during A. fumigatus infection. Abstract

Aims: The consumption of highly refined carbohydrates increases systemic inflammatory markers, but its potential to exert direct myocardial inflammation is uncertain. Herein, we addressed the impact of a high-refined carbohydrate (HC) diet on mice heart and local inflammation over time., Main Methods: BALB/c mice were fed with a standard chow (control) or an isocaloric HC diet for 2, 4, or 8 weeks (HC groups), in which the morphometry of heart sections and contractile analyses by invasive catheterization and Langendorff-perfused hearts were assessed. Cytokines levels by ELISA, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity by zymography, in situ reactive oxygen species (ROS) staining and lipid peroxidation-induced TBARS levels, were also determined., Key Findings: HC diet fed mice displayed left ventricular hypertrophy and interstitial fibrosis in all times analyzed, which was confirmed by echocardiographic analyses of 8HC group. Impaired contractility indices of HC groups were observed by left ventricular catheterization, whereas ex vivo and in vitro indices of contraction under isoprenaline-stimulation were higher in HC-fed mice compared with controls. Peak levels of TNF-α, TGF-β, ROS, TBARS, and MMP-2 occur independently of HC diet time. Abstract

Aims: Obesity can lead to the loss of the anticontractile properties of perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT). Given that cafeteria (CAF) diet reflects the variety of highly calorie and easily accessible foods in Western societies, contributing to obesity and metabolic disorders, we sought to investigate the impact of CAF diet on PVAT vasoactive profile and the involvement of renin-angiotensin system, oxidative stress, and cyclooxygenase pathway., Main Methods: Male Balb/c mice received standard or CAF diet for 4 weeks. Oral glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity tests were performed, and fasting serum glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride parameters were determined. Vascular reactivity, fluorescence and immunofluorescence analyzes were carried out in intact thoracic aorta in the presence or absence of PVAT., Key Findings: CAF diet was effective in inducing obesity and metabolic disorders, as demonstrated by increased body weight gain and adiposity index, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance and insulin insensitivity. Importantly, CAF diet led to a significant decrease in aortic contractility which was restored in the presence of PVAT, exhibiting therefore a contractile profile. The contractile effect of PVAT was associated with the activation of AT 1 receptor, reactive oxygen species, cyclooxygenase-1, thromboxane A 2 and prostaglandin E 2 receptors., Significance: These findings suggest that the contractile profile of PVAT involving the renin-angiotensin system activation, reactive oxygen species and cyclooxygenase-1 metabolites may be a protective compensatory adaptive response during early stage of CAF diet-induced obesity as an attempt to restore the impaired vascular contraction observed in the absence of PVAT, contributing to the maintenance of vascular tone., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that there are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2022. Abstract

Vascular dysfunction induced by angiotensin-II can result from direct effects on vascular and inflammatory cells and indirect hemodynamic effects. Using isolated and functional cultured aortas, we aimed to identify the effects of angiotensin-II on cyclooxygenase (COX) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and evaluate their impact on vascular reactivity. Aortic rings from mice were incubated overnight in culture medium containing angiotensin-II (100 nmol/L) or vehicle to induce vascular disfunction. Vascular reactivity of cultured arteries was evaluated in a bath chamber. Immunofluorescence staining for COX-1 and COX-2 was performed. Nitric oxide (NO) formation was approached by the levels of nitrite, a NO end product, and using a fluorescent probe (DAF). Oxidative and nitrosative stress were determined by DHE fluorescence and nitrotyrosine staining, respectively. Arteries cultured with angiotensin-II showed impairment of endothelium-dependent relaxation, which was reversed by the AT 1 receptor antagonist. Inhibition of COX and iNOS restored vascular relaxation, suggesting a common pathway in which angiotensin-II triggers COX and iNOS, leading to vasoconstrictor receptors activation. Moreover, using selective antagonists, TP and EP were identified as the receptors involved in this response. Endothelium-dependent contractions of angiotensin-II-cultured aortas were blunted by ibuprofen, and increased COX-2 immunostaining was found in the arteries, indicating endothelium release of vasoconstrictor prostanoids. Angiotensin-II induced increased reactive oxygen species and NO production. An iNOS inhibitor prevented NO enhancement and nitrotyrosine accumulation in arteries stimulated with angiotensin-II. Abstract

Objective: Dengue fever is one of the most important arboviral diseases in the world, and its severe forms are characterised by a broad spectrum of systemic and cardiovascular hallmarks. However, much remains to be elucidated regarding the pathogenesis triggered by Dengue virus (DENV) in the heart. Herein, we evaluated the cardiac outcomes unleashed by DENV infection and the possible mechanisms associated with these effects., Methods: A model of an adapted DENV-3 strain was used to infect male BALB/c mice to assess haemodynamic measurements and the functional, electrophysiological, inflammatory and oxidative parameters in the heart., Results: DENV-3 infection resulted in increased systemic inflammation and vascular permeability with consequent reduction of systolic blood pressure and increase in heart rate. These changes were accompanied by a decrease in the cardiac output and stroke volume, with a reduction trend in the left ventricular end-systolic and end-diastolic diameters and volumes. Also, there was a reduction trend in the calcium current density in the ventricular cardiomyocytes of DENV-3 infected mice. Indeed, DENV-3 infection led to leucocyte infiltration and production of inflammatory mediators in the heart, causing pericarditis and myocarditis. Moreover, increased reactive oxygen species generation and lipoperoxidation were also verified in the cardiac tissue of DENV-3 infected mice., Conclusions: DENV-3 infection induced a marked cardiac dysfunction, which may be associated with inflammation, oxidative stress and electrophysiological changes in the heart.
