Abstract

International audience; Between 1999 and 2001, the Institut de protection et de sûreté nucléaire (IPSN) has carried out dosimetry measurements for the Institut français pour la recherche et la technologie polaire (IFRTP), in order to estimate the dose received by the staff working at the "dôme C" (Antarctic), on the forthcoming base CONCORDIA. This dose is almost due to cosmic rays. Thermoluminescent detectors have been used to measure the part of the dose expected from particles with low energy transfer (LET). The contribution of high LET particles to the whole dose has been estimated both by direct measurements using track detectors, and from the low LET component, by extrapolation of its result. The relative contribution of low LET and high LET particles to the total dose equivalent can be deduced from the altitude of "dôme C". Results are presented in term of effective dose, which is estimated, for one year spent at "dôme C", to 2.1 mSv. © 2002 EDP Sciences.

Abstract

The metrology of high-energy neutron fields is important because of the increase in the number of high-energy accelerators in research and medicine in Europe, where high-energy neutrons are the dominant component of the radiation field present outside the shielding ; high-energy neutrons can also be a secondary component of the fields in the beam delivery system and in the patient’s body in hadrontherapy and the occupational exposure to cosmic radiation where highenergy neutrons are a significant component of the total cosmic radiation field in aircraft and in spacecraft. The energy range of neutrons in these fields extends from thermal energies to several gigaelectron volts.

Abstract

In the case of a radiological accident due to external exposure, the assessment of the organs and whole body dose received by the victim is fundamental information for therapeutic strategy. Two complementary dosimetric techniques based on physical means are used in routine practice in the laboratory: Monte Carlo (MC) calculations and ESR spectroscopy performed on materials removed from the victim. The aim of the present study is to provide data relevant for a quick assessment of the dose distribution in case of accidental overexposure using dose ESR measurements performed on one or several points of the body. The chosen configurations were, on the one hand, standard homogeneous exposures (ICPR 74) and, on the other hand, exposures typical of accidental situations (source at 1m, in a pocket, in a hand and contaminated floor). The study was performed for monoenergetic photons and neutrons, and several sources (60Co, 137Cs, 192Ir, 252Cf and AmBe). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
