Abstract: Observations of very high energy gamma-rays from blazars provide information about acceleration mechanisms occurring in their innermost regions. Studies of variability in these objects allow a better understanding of the mechanisms at play. To investigate the spectral and temporal variability of VHE (>100 GeV) gamma-rays of the well-known high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 with the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes over a wide range of flux states. Data collected from 2005 to 2007 are analyzed. Spectra are derived on time scales ranging from 3 years to 4 minutes. Light curve variability is studied through doubling timescales and structure functions, and is compared with red noise process simulations. The source is found to be in a low state from 2005 to 2007, except for a set of exceptional flares which occurred in July 2006. The quiescent state of the source is characterized by an associated mean flux level of 4.32 +/-0.09 x 10^-11 cm^-2 s^-1 above 200 GeV, or approximately 15% of the Crab Nebula, and a power law photon index of 3.53 +/-0.06. During the flares of July 2006, doubling timescales of ~2 min are found. The spectral index variation is examined over two orders of magnitude in flux, yielding different behaviour at low and high fluxes,which is a new phenomenon in VHE gamma-ray emitting blazars. The variability amplitude characterized by the fractional r.m.s. is strongly energy-dependent and is proportional to E^(0.19 +/- 0.01). The light curve r.m.s. correlates with the flux. This is the signature of a multiplicative process which can be accounted for as a red noise with a Fourier index of ~2. This unique data set shows evidence for a low level gamma-ray emission state from PKS 2155-304, which possibly has a different origin than the outbursts. 5. Molecular cloning and characterization of a cDNA for the β subunit of human alcohol dehydrogenase

Abstract: Human alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) is encoded by at least five genes that fall into three classes. The class I ADH genes encode the three closely related α, β, and γ polypeptides. Molecular genetic analysis of class I ADH genes has been initiated by isolating a cDNA clone from a human adult liver cDNA library. A synthetic oligonucleotide mixture encoding a portion of the β subunit of ADH was used as an in situ hybridization probe for the cDNA library. One positively hybridizing clone, pADH12, which contained an 1100-base-pair cDNA insert, was subjected to DNA sequence analysis. The sequence indicated that the cDNA encoded information for the carboxyl-terminal 91 amino acids of a class I ADH and a 3' untranslated region of 593 nucleotides. Comparisons with the carboxyl terminus of the human ADH β subunit indicated that the cDNA encoded the β polypeptide. This probe may facilitate genetic studies of various human alcohol-related syndromes, as well as enable basic molecular studies on human ADH gene expression.

Abstract: We present a measurement of azimuthal correlations between inclusive J/psi and charged hadrons in p-Pb collisions recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The J/psi are reconstructed at forward (p-going, 2.03 < y < 3.53) and backward (Pb-going, -4.46 < y < -2.96) rapidity via their mu(+)mu(-) decay channel, while the charged hadrons are reconstructed at mid-rapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.8). The correlations are expressed in terms of associated charged-hadron yields per W . trigger. A rapidity gap of at least 1.5 units is required between the trigger J/psi and the associated charged hadrons. Possible correlations due to collective effects are assessed by subtracting the associated per-trigger yields in the low-multiplicity collisions from those in the high-multiplicity collisions. After the subtraction, we observe a strong indication of remaining symmetric structures at Delta phi approximate to 0 and Delta phi approximate to pi), similar to those previously found in two-particle correlations at middle and forward rapidity. The corresponding second-order Fourier coefficient (v(2) ) in the transverse momentum interval between 3 and 6 GeV/c is found to be positive with a significance of about 5 sigma. The obtained results are similar to the J/psi v(2) coefficients measured in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV, suggesting a common mechanism at the origin of the J/psi v(2) . Abstract: First results on the longitudinal asymmetry and its effect on the pseudorapidity distributions in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider are obtained with the ALICE detector. The longitudinal asymmetry arises because of an unequal number of participating nucleons from the two colliding nuclei, and is estimated for each event by measuring the energy in the forward neutron-Zero-Degree-Calorimeters (ZNs). The effect of the longitudinal asymmetry is measured on the pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles in the regions vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.9, 2.8 < eta < 5.1 and -3.7 < eta < -1.7 by taking the ratio of the pseudorapidity distributions from events corresponding to different regions of asymmetry. The coefficients of a polynomial fit to the ratio characterise the effect of the asymmetry. A Monte Carlo simulation using a Glauber model for the colliding nuclei is tuned to reproduce the spectrum in the ZNs and provides a relation between the measurable longitudinal asymmetry and the shift in the rapidity (y(0)) of the participant zone formed by the unequal number of participating nucleons. The dependence of the coefficient of the linear term in the polynomial expansion, c(1), on the mean value of y(0) is investigated. (C) 2018 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: The accretion of matter onto a massive black hole is believed to feed the relativistic plasma jets found in many active galactic nuclei (AGN). Although some AGN accelerate particles to energies exceeding 10^12 electron Volts (eV) and are bright sources of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission, it is not yet known where the VHE emission originates. Here we report on radio and VHE observations of the radio galaxy M87, revealing a period of extremely strong VHE gamma-ray flares accompanied by a strong increase of the radio flux from its nucleus. Abstract: 8 Pages, 2 Figures; Accepted on Nov 6, 2007 for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics; AIMS: Very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) gamma-ray studies were performed for 18 active galactic nuclei (AGN) from a variety of AGN classes. METHODS: VHE observations of a sample of 14 AGN, considered candidate VHE emitters, were made with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) between January 2005 and July 2007. Large-zenith-angle observations of three northern AGN (Mkn 421, Mkn 501, 1ES 1218+304), known to emit VHE gamma rays, were also performed in order to sample their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) above 1 TeV. In addition, the VHE flux from 1ES 1101-232, previously detected by HESS in 2004-2005, was monitored during 2006 and 2007. RESULTS: As significant detections from the HESS observation program are reported elsewhere, the results reported here are primarily integral flux upper limits. The average exposure for each of the 14 VHE-candidate AGN is ~7 h live time, and the observations have an average energy threshold between 230 GeV and 590 GeV. Abstract: We present the results of a search for pulsed very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from young pulsars using data taken with the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope system. Data on eleven pulsars, selected according to their spin-down luminosity relative to distance, are searched for gamma-ray signals with periodicity at the respective pulsar spin period. Special analysis efforts were made to improve the sensitivity in the 100 GeV gamma-ray energy domain in an attempt to reduce the gap between satellite and ground-based gamma-ray instruments. No significant evidence for pulsed emission is found in any data set. Differential upper limits on pulsed energy flux are determined for all selected pulsars in the approximate gamma-ray energy range between 100 GeV and 50 TeV, using different limit determination methods, testing a wide range of possible pulsar light curves and energy spectra. The limits derived here imply that the magnetospheric VHE gamma-ray production efficiency in young pulsars is less than 10^-4 of the pulsar spin-down luminosity, requiring spectral turnovers for the high-energy emission of four established gamma-ray pulsars, and constrain the inverse Compton radiation component predicted by several outer gap models., 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: The blazar 1ES 1101-232 was observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) of Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (ACT) in 2004 and 2005, for a live time of 43 hours. VHE (E > 10^11 eV) gamma-rays were detected for the first time from this object. VHE observations of blazars are used to investigate the inner parts of the blazar jets, and also to study the extragalactic background light (EBL) in the near-infrared band. Observations in 2005 were conducted in a multiwavelength campaign, together with the RXTE satellite and optical observations. In 2004, simultaneous observations with XMM-Newton were obtained. 1ES 1101-232 was detected with H.E.S.S. with an excess of 649 photons, at a significance of 10 sigma. The measured VHE gamma-ray flux amounts to dN/dE = (5.63 +- 0.89) x 10^-13 (E/TeV)^-(2.94 +- 0.20) cm^-2 s^-1 TeV^-1, above a spectral energy threshold of 225 GeV. No significant variation of the VHE gamma-ray flux on any time scale was found. 1ES 1101-232 exhibits a very hard spectrum, and at a redshift of z=0.186, is the blazar with the highest confirmed redshift detected in VHE gamma-rays so far. The data allow the construction of truly simultaneous spectral energy distributions of the source, from the optical to the VHE band. Using an EBL model with \nu F_\nu = 14 nW m^-2 sr^-1 at 1.5 \mu m as presented in Aharonian et al. Abstract: The high-frequency peaked BL Lac PKS 2155-304 at redshift z=0.116 is a well-known VHE (>100 GeV) gamma-ray emitter. Since 2002 its VHE flux has been monitored using the H.E.S.S. stereoscopic array of imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia. During the July 2006 dark period, the average VHE flux was measured to be more than ten times typical values observed from the object. This article focuses solely on an extreme gamma-ray outburst detected in the early hours of July 28, 2006 (MJD 53944). The average flux observed during this outburst is I(>200 GeV) = (1.72$\pm$$0.05_{\rm stat}$$\pm$$0.34_{\rm syst}$) $\times$ 10$^{-9}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, corresponding to ~7 times the flux, I(>200 GeV), observed from the Crab Nebula. Peak fluxes are measured with one-minute time scale resolution at more than twice this average value. Variability is seen up to ~600 s in the Fourier power spectrum, and well-resolved bursts varying on time scales of ~200 seconds are observed. There are no strong indications for spectral variability within the data. Abstract: AIMS: To investigate the very high energy (VHE: >100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from the high-frequency peaked BL Lac 1ES 0229+200. METHODS: Observations of 1ES 0229+200 at energies above 580 GeV were performed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) in 2005 and 2006. RESULTS: 1ES 0229+200 is discovered by HESS to be an emitter of VHE photons. A signal is detected at the 6.6 sigma level in the HESS observations (41.8 h live time). The integral flux above 580 GeV is (9.4 +- 1.5 {stat} +- 1.9 {syst}) x 10^{-13} cm^{-2} s^{-1}, corresponding to ~1.8% of the flux observed from the Crab Nebula. The data show no evidence for significant variability on any time scale. The observed spectrum is characterized by a hard power law (Gamma = 2.50 +- 0.19 {stat} +- 0.10 {syst}) from 500 GeV to ~15 TeV. CONCLUSIONS: The high-energy range and hardness of the observed spectrum, coupled with the object's relatively large redshift (z=0.1396), enable the strongest constraints so far on the density of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) in the mid-infrared band. Assuming that the emitted spectrum is not harder than Gamma_{int} ~ 1.5, the HESS data support an EBL spectrum ~ lambda^{-1} and density close to the lower limit from source counts measured by Spitzer, confirming the previous indications from the HEGRA data of 1ES 1426+428 (z=0.129). Irrespective of the EBL models used, the intrinsic spectrum of 1ES 0229+200 is hard, thus locating the high-energy peak of its spectral energy distribution above a few TeV., 5 pages, 4 figures; Accepted for publication in A&A Letters on September 23, 2007

Abstract: The high-frequency peaked BL Lac PG 1553+113 was observed in 2005 with the H.E.S.S. stereoscopic array of imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia. Using the H.E.S.S. standard analysis, an excess was measured at the 4.0 sigma level in these observations (7.6 hours live time). Three alternative, lower-threshold analyses yield >5 sigma excesses. The observed integral flux above 200 GeV is (4.8 +/- 1.3_{stat} +/- 1.0_{syst}) x10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}, and shows no evidence for variability. The measured energy spectrum is characterized by a very soft power law (photon index of Gamma=4.0 +/- 0.6). Although the redshift of PG 1553+113 is unknown, there are strong indications that it is greater than z=0.25 and possibly larger than z=0.78. The observed spectrum is interpreted in the context of VHE gamma-ray absorption by the Extragalactic Background Light, and is used to place an upper limit on the redshift of z, 5 pages, 3 figures; accepted (Jan. 19, 2006) for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

37. Quadricyclane Radical Cation Q+: Formation and Isomerization in Liquid Methylcyclohexane

Abstract: The radical cation of quadricyclane (Q) was studied by pulse radiolysis at 133 K with methylcyclohexane (MCH) as solvent, saturated with N2O. The known solvent radical cations, MCH⁺ and its precursor M^+*, are expected to produce Q⁺ by charge transfer. Although Q⁺ was known not to absorb in the visible λ-range, there was a very early absorption band at λmax = 720 nm (the transient is called Q^+*), which eventually transformed into the cation of norbornadiene (NBD⁺) with λmax = 650 nm. The analysis of the geminate ion kinetics with the semiempirical t^-0.6 kinetic law revealed that Q^+* decays faster than the isomer NBD⁺ is built up. Q^+* must be a precursor to the nonabsorbing Q⁺, which eventually isomerizes to NBD⁺, followed by a back reaction with Q to re-form Q⁺. The quantitative analysis revealed that a substantial amount of the cations is lost before NBD⁺ is formed. This loss to a fragment or isomer (called F⁺) occurs from Q^+*. As this loss dropped drastically for very low [Q], Q^+* must increasingly be bypassed by lowering [Q]. It turns out that Q^+* is produced from M^+* only (the higher energy precursor of the solvent radical cation MCH⁺) in competition with the transformation of M^+* to MCH⁺, the latter becoming dominant at low [Q], increasingly producing Q⁺ directly from MCH⁺ without going through Q^+*. The loss yield (F⁺) correspondingly loses. The complete mechanism is given (Scheme 3). All the rate constants and the free ion contributions of all cations were determined and, together with the known Gfi value, the absorption coefficients were derived. Comparing these results with a mechanism proposed recently by Adam et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1995, 117, 9693) suggests that Q^+* corresponds to their cation Q⁺(l), where the lateral bonds are oxidized, Q⁺ to their cation Q⁺(i), where the internal bonds are oxidized, and F⁺ to the Q⁺ isomer BHD⁺ (the bicyclo[3.2.0]hepta-2,6-diene cation). The precursor ion M^+* of the solvent, which is responsible for the Q^+* production must be of higher energy than MCH⁺; however, its structure remains unknown. The two precursor cations, M^+* and Q^+*, are critically compared and discussed.

38. Chloroform Anion Fragmentation in Liquid Methylcyclohexane: t-0.6 Simulation of the Geminate Ion Kinetics

Abstract: The chloroform anion in liquid methylcyclohexane (MCH) fragments during the time scale of geminate ion recombination (143 K ≤ T ≤ 193 K). Its lifetime can only be determined if the geminate ion kinetics can be calculated. The t^-^0.6 semiempirical law is used. Because CHCl3 quenches M⁺*, the precursor of the solvent radical cation MCH⁺, much less effectively than N2O, the fragmentation of M⁺* to produce the methylcyclohexene cation (MCHene⁺) has to be considered by theory. The t^-0.6 simulation therefore was modified to include the two parallel reactions of the M⁺* decay, which are forming mixed ion pairs (MCHene⁺, MCH⁺/X^-). It is found that mixed pairs are still describable by the t^-0.6 linearity, yet the mobility factor δ (slope of t^-0.6) is now λ-dependent. Complete simulation of the ionic mechanism yields the following results: (1) The fragmentation rate constant for %@mt;sys@%CHCl%@sx@%3%@be@%-%@sxx@%%@mx@% is k1(143 K) = (3.6 ± 0.3) × 10⁶ s^-1 with Eact = 4.6 ± 0.5 kJ/mol and logA = 8.2 ± 0.2. The lifetime of 280 ns is substantially larger than expected from gas phase data. (2) By applying the known Gfi values to the free ion spectra at 143 K, 153 K, and 173 K, the absorption coefficients of the %@mt;sys@%CHCl%@sx@%3%@be@%-%@sxx@%%@mx@% band were determined and a Lorentzian line shape fitted: λmax = 470 nm, εmax = 1900 ± 30 M^-1 s^-1 and a width of hwhm = 28 ± 2 nm. (3) Assuming that the M⁺* fragmentation (kfrag) and the natural relaxation to MCH⁺ (k0) are the same as in N2O-saturated MCH, the quenching rate constant at 143 K may be derived: k2(M⁺* + CHCl3 → MCH⁺) = (7.7 ± 2.6) × 10⁶ M^-1 s^-1. Quenching by CHCl3 therefore is about four times slower than by N2O; the yield of the olefinic cation (MCHene⁺) is strongly increased relative to the MCH⁺ yield. Furthermore, the ratio quenching/fragmentation with chloroform as solute is found to increase with temperature, suggesting that fragmentation at room temperature might have much less importance.

Abstract: A detailed study of the vibrational structure of the silasesquioxanes H8Si8O12 and H10Si10O15 based on INS, IR, and Raman spectra and on a normal-coordinate analysis is reported. The inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectrum of crystalline H8Si8O12 is in good agreement with the optical data and allowed the assignment of optically forbidden transitions. The previously published force field, determined from IR and Raman data of H8Si8O12 and D8Si8O12, provided a good fit to the INS frequencies and intensities except in the O−Si−H bending region, which is sensitive to intermolecular interactions. The INS spectrum, a comparison of the Raman spectra of dissolved and solid H8Si8O12, and published diffraction data were used to analyse the influence of crystal packing. A modified force field was developed which is adapted to crystalline H8Si8O12 and distinguishes between O−Si−H bending force constants for the axial and the equatorial hydrogen atoms. Excellent agreement with all spectra was thus obtained. This force field was also applied to the INS spectra of H10Si10O15 and D8Si8O12. Based on a normal-coordinate analysis of the INS data, the total mean-square displacements (msd) of the hydrogen atoms of H8Si8O12 were extracted as well as limits for the total msd of the silicon atoms. The msd's and the neutron diffraction values are in good agreement, showing that no or very little static disorder is present in crystalline H8Si8O12. Based on the msd's, the lowest internal torsional frequency was estimated to be 41 ± 7 cm^-1.

40. A Precursor to the Solvent Radical Cation MCH+: Pulse Radiolysis of Liquid Methylcyclohexane (MCH) at 143 K

Abstract: It is shown by pulse radiolysis that in N2O-saturated methylcyclohexane (MCH) the solvent radical cation MCH⁺ is formed, but in argon-saturated MCH, the olefinic fragment cation methylcyclohexene⁺ (MCHexene⁺) is obtained. From simulations of the geminate ion kinetics with the t^-0.6 semiempirical rate law, it is concluded that both cations must have a common precursor: some excited state of MCH⁺, called M⁺*. This precursor either fragments to form MCHexene⁺ or is quenched, e.g. by N2O, to form MCH⁺, or relaxes in the MCH environment. The corresponding rate constants at 143 K are kfrag = (2.5 ± 0.5) × 10⁶ s^-1, k2(M⁺* + N2O) = (3.1 ± 0.5) × 10⁷ M^-1 s^-1 and k0 = (3.2 ± 1.6) × 10⁵ s^-1. The mobility of M⁺* was assumed to correspond to that of the fast MCH⁺, i.e. DM+* ≈ DMCH+ = (1.8 ± 0.2) × 10^-6 cm² s^-1. The mobility of the solvated electron, De-solv, was determined to be (1.6 ± 0.2) × 10^-6 cm² s^-1. From a Lorentzian line shape analysis of the free ion intercept spectra, the individual yields for both systems were derived. The optimal line parameters are the following: for MCH⁺ λmax = 570 nm, hwhm (half-width at half-maximum) = 19000 cm^-1; for MCHexene⁺ λmax = 450 nm, hwhm = 5500 cm^-1; and for e^-solv λmax = 1900 nm, hwhm = 4500 cm^-1. Using the known free ion yield (Gfi = 0.06 ± 0.015 (100 eV)^-1) the absorption coefficients are calculated to be: ε(MCHexene⁺)450nm = 2260 ± 200 M^-1 cm^-1, ε(MCH⁺)570nm = 1910 ± 150 M^-1 cm^-1, ε(e^-solv)700nm = 1100 ± 50 M^-1 cm^-1, and ε(M⁺*)600nm = 700 ± 50 M^-1 cm^-1. The error limits given are due to the line shape analysis only. There is an additional systematic effect due to the error-limit for the Gfi-value (±25%): all ε-values become higher if the Gfi-value should be smaller.

To achieve the needed accuracy in the reconstruction of the event geometry, low-energy (≤ 200 MeV) events converting in the silicon detector layers of the LAT tracker have to be used. We present preliminary results of the ongoing effort within the LAT collaboration to measure gamma-ray polarization. We discuss the statistical and systematic uncertainties affecting such a measurement. We show that a 5σ minimum detectable polarization (MDP) of ≈ 30 − 50% could be within reach for the brightest gamma-ray sources as the Vela and Crab pulsars and the blazar 3C 454.3, after 10 years of observation. To estimate the systematic uncertainties, we stack bright AGN, and use this stack as a test source. LAT sensitivity to polarization is estimated comparing the data to a simulation of the expected unpolarized emission of the stack. We measure a 5σ sensitivity limit corresponding to a polarization degree of ≈ 37%. Abstract: The astrophysical journal 826(1), 76 (2016). doi:10.3847/0004-637X/826/1/76, MeV blazars are a sub-population of the blazar family, exhibiting larger-than-average jet powers, accretion luminosities, and black hole masses. Because of their extremely hard X-ray continua, these objects are best studied in the X-ray domain. Here, we report on the discovery by the Fermi Large Area Telescope and subsequent follow-up observations with NuSTAR, Swift, and GROND of a new member of the MeV blazar family: PMN J0641−0320. Our optical spectroscopy provides confirmation that this is a flat-spectrum radio quasar located at a redshift of z = 1.196. Its very hard NuSTAR spectrum (power-law photon index of ~1 up to ~80 keV) indicates that the emission is produced via inverse Compton scattering off of photons coming from outside the jet. The overall spectral energy distribution of PMN J0641−0320 is typical of powerful blazars and, using a simple one-zone leptonic emission model, we infer that the emission region is located either inside the broad line region or within the dusty torus., Published by Univ.11032, Chicago, Ill. 49. Effect of diabetes and peritonitis on the peritoneal equilibration test.

Abstract: Peritoneal equilibration tests (PET) were performed on 47 patients (15 diabetics) who had been on CAPD for 1 to 112 months. Among new patients on CAPD (1 to 3 months) with no history of peritonitis, diabetics had higher D/PCr than non-diabetics (P < 0.02). However, after > or = 7 months of CAPD, in patients with < or = 2 episodes of peritonitis, glucose and creatinine transport rates were lower (P < 0.05) in diabetic than non-diabetic patients. Among patients on CAPD for > or = 7 months, creatinine (P < 0.05) and glucose transport (P < 0.01) were higher in patients with a history of > or = 3 episodes of peritonitis than in those with < or = 2 episodes. Drain volumes did not differ between any of the subgroups (all P > 0.05). The observations in patients newly established on CAPD were substantiated in a larger study of 55 non-diabetic and 35 non-insulin dependent diabetic patients. D/D0 glucose correlated with plasma glucose (r = 0.40, P < 0.02) in the diabetic group. Net ultrafiltration was reduced in hyperglycemic (P = 0.022) but not normoglycemic diabetics (non-diabetics 231 +/- 167 ml, hyperglycemic diabetics 127 +/- 177 ml, normoglycemic diabetics 238 +/- 159 ml). Creatinine clearance was higher in normoglycemic (P = 0.02) but not hyperglycemic diabetics (non-diabetics 6.8 +/- 0.9 ml/min, hyperglycemic diabetics 6.9 +/- 0.8 ml/min, normoglycemic diabetics 7.4 +/- 0.7 ml/min). 50. Somatic discomforts among depressed women.

Abstract: An inventory of 69 somatic discomforts was used to identify those discomforts most likely to be concurrent with a clinically severe depression in a sample of 223 recently hospitalized women. The inventory provided scores for each of 15 classes of discomfort. The classes of discomfort with the highest average score for the depressed sample at admission also yielded significantly lower scores for a nonpatient control sample (P less than .05). The four classes of discomfort most pertinent to depression were designated autonomic, wakefulness, dry mouth, and fatigue. The items of discomfort contributing to these classes showed a statistically significant diminution in severity during treatment (P less than .05).
