1. On the amenability of semigroups of entire maps and formal power series

Abstract

In this article, we investigate some relations between dynamical and algebraic properties of semigroups of entire maps with applications to semigroups of formal series. We show that two entire maps fixing the origin share the set of preperiodic points, whenever these maps generate a semigroup which contains neither free nor free abelian non-cyclic subsemigroups and one of the maps has the origin as a superattracting fixed point. We show that a subgroup of formal series generated by rational elements is amenable, whenever contains no free non-cyclic subsemigroup generated by rational elements. We prove that a left-amenable semigroup S of entire maps admits a invariant probability measure for a continuous extension of S on the Stone-Cech compactification of the complex plane. Finally, given an entire map f, we associate a semigroup S such that f admits no ergodic fixed point of the Ruelle operator, whenever every finitely generated subsemigroup of S admits a left-amenable Ruelle representation., Comment: 33 pages

Abstract

La expansión de los museos en Europa se desarrolló a lo largo del siglo XIX como fenómeno cultural. Pero durante el siglo XX, y en diferentes lugares del mundo, la función de ciertos museos fue evolucionando y especializándose con el objetivo de potenciar su función como elemento de contribución a los procesos de transformación social para la dignificación de la cultura de los pueblos. Desde entonces, el museo como institución entró a formar parte de los procesos educativos no formales, generalizables a las clases más populares aportando nuevas claves sobre el debate de qué es, o qué aspectos de la cultura, hay que exponer en los museos, y sobre todo de qué manera deben exponerse para tener un fin didáctico educativo o una misión de "concienciar conciencias" desde el punto de vista de la educación popular, a partir de un proceso integral de investigación participativa. El objeto de este trabajo es dar a conocer, en primer lugar, la evolución del museo como sistema de representación de los bienes patrimoniales, así como su interpretación a lo largo del siglo XX. Para ello se destaca una muestra de algunas experiencias del panorama mundial (Canadá, Ecuador). En segundo lugar se da a conocer la importancia que la nueva museología ha tenido en la defensa del reconocimiento de la diversidad cultural, con la exposición de dos realidades museísticas concretas. En último lugar se pretende reflexionar sobre la importancia de la relación entre los bienes culturales y la educación, centrándonos en el papel de los museos y en las relaciones que existen entre la educación patrimonial y su papel en la construcción de identidades sociales.

Abstract

We demonstrate fast control of the interatomic interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate by coherently coupling two atomic states with intra- and inter-state scattering lengths of opposite signs. We measure the elastic and inelastic scattering properties of the system and find good agreement with a theoretical model describing the interactions between dressed states. In the attractive regime, we observe the formation of bright solitons formed by dressed-state atoms. Finally, we study the response of the system to an interaction quench from repulsive to attractive values, and observe how the resulting modulational instability develops into a bright soliton train., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

This work reviews the origin, development, completion, and outcome of a trans-elastic ultracentrifuge project of Mexico's Nuclear Center through 1971 to 1986. The project had its origin in the search for an effect that supposedly would validate Birkhoff's gravity theory over Einstein's General Relativity. For this purpose an extraordinary ultracentrifuge was built which deserved the 1973 National Award for Instruments (Mexico). The ultracentrifuge was also used to investigate the feasibility of uranium enrichment by solid state centrifugation. Abstract

We present a detailed study of the scattering properties of ultracold mixtures of bosonic potassium atoms. We locate 20 previously unobserved Feshbach resonances in isotopic 39K-41K mixtures. These are assigned to s-wave molecular channels by comparison to an asymptotic bound state model and coupled channels calculations. Additional Feshbach resonances are studied in spin mixtures of a single potassium isotope, both in 39K and 41K. In particular, we characterize the parameters of a selected 39K Feshbach resonance by radio-frequency association of Feshbach molecules. Our results could be exploited to refine the model potentials for potassium scattering. Furthermore, these new Feshbach resonances enlarge the range of experiments possible with degenerate Bose-Bose mixtures., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Attractive Bose-Einstein condensates can host two types of macroscopic self-bound states of different nature: bright solitons and quantum liquid droplets. Here, we investigate the connection between them with a Bose-Bose mixture confined in an optical waveguide. We develop a simple theoretical model to show that, depending on atom number and interaction strength, solitons and droplets can be smoothly connected or remain distinct states coexisting only in a bi-stable region. Abstract

Quantum droplets are small clusters of atoms self-bound by the balance of attractive and repulsive forces. Here we report on the observation of a novel type of droplets, solely stabilized by contact interactions in a mixture of two Bose-Einstein condensates. We demonstrate that they are several orders of magnitude more dilute than liquid helium by directly measuring their size and density via in situ imaging. Moreover, by comparison to a single-component condensate, we show that quantum many-body effects stabilize them against collapse. We observe that droplets require a minimum atom number to be stable. Below, quantum pressure drives a liquid-to-gas transition that we map out as a function of interaction strength. These ultra-dilute isotropic liquids remain weakly interacting and constitute an ideal platform to benchmark quantum many-body theories., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, includes supplementary material

However, information is limited on pathways to triple therapy in the UK.Patients and Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using de-identified patient-level data from UK primary care electronic medical records from January 1, 2005 to May 1, 2016. Data were included from patients who had their first triple therapy regimen (index date) recorded during the study period and a minimum of 12 months’ pre-index data. Treatment pathways to triple therapy were recorded, and the proportion of patients on triple therapy before their COPD diagnosis was determined. Adherence to triple therapy was estimated using the proportion of days covered (PDC).Results: After applying eligibility criteria, 82,300 patients were included, with a mean age at COPD diagnosis of 64.7 years. The major treatment pathway (27.9%) was the first initiation of ICS+LABA prior to triple therapy. Following COPD diagnosis, the median time to triple therapy was approximately 3.5 years. The estimated mean adherence to triple therapy was 81.8% PDC. Multivariate analysis showed that the following groups were more likely to have received previous therapy prior to triple therapy: females (versus males), patients with asthma (versus those without asthma), severe COPD (versus those with non-severe COPD), or fewer exacerbations (versus those with more exacerbations).Conclusion: Treatment pathways to triple therapy in the UK are diverse, highlighting the need to better understand factors involved in clinical decision-making.Keywords: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, patient pathways, real-world, retrospective study, treatment initiation, triple therapy

Poor adherence is characterized by underuse of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), often accompanied by over-reliance on short-acting β2-agonists for symptom relief. To identify drivers of poor medication adherence, a targeted literature search was performed in MEDLINE and EMBASE for articles presenting qualitative data evaluating medication adherence in asthma patients (≥ 12 years old), published from January 1, 2012 to February 26, 2018. A thematic analysis of 21 relevant articles revealed several key themes driving poor medication adherence, including asthma-specific drivers and more general drivers common to chronic diseases. Due to the episodic nature of asthma, many patients felt that their daily life was not substantially impacted; consequently, many harbored doubts about the accuracy of their diagnosis or were in denial about the impact of the disease and, in turn, the need for long-term treatment. This was further compounded by poor patient-physician communication, which contributed to suboptimal knowledge about asthma medications, including lack of understanding of the distinction between maintenance and reliever inhalers, suboptimal inhaler technique, and concerns about ICS side effects. Other drivers of poor medication adherence included the high cost of asthma medication, general forgetfulness, and embarrassment over inhaler use in public. Overall, patients’ perceived lack of need for asthma medications and medication concerns, in part due to suboptimal knowledge and poor patient-physician communication, emerged as key drivers of poor medication adherence. Abstract

Individuals with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion are at increased risk of poor outcomes. Intravenous thrombolysis with tenecteplase might improve outcomes in this population. We aimed to test the superiority of intravenous tenecteplase over non-thrombolytic standard of care in patients with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion or focal perfusion abnormality.

Abstract

El consumo de tabaco es uno de los principales factores de riesgo relacionados con la aparición de patología pulmonar. Las enfermedades comunmente relacionadas con el tabaquismo son el cáncer de pulmón y la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC). Sin embargo, en los últimos años se ha prestado especial interés a la asociación entre el tabaquismo y el desarrollo de distintas enfermedades intersticiales pulmonares (EPID)1. De hecho, se considera que la bronquiolitis respiratoria asociada a EPID (BR-EPID), la neumonía intersticial descamativa (NID) y la histiocitosis pulmonar de células de Langerhans son debidas al tabaquismo. Con el presente artículo pretendemos realizar una revisión sistemática de las principales EPID relacionadas con el tabaquismo.

Despite its importance, it is not routinely measured in clinical practice. Little is currently known about the relationship, if any, between PIF through DPI devices, routine spirometry and disease outcomes.Aim: The aim of this study was to identify potential predictors of PIF for different DPIs from spirometric parameters and patient characteristics and explore the association between PIF and follow-up events.Patients and methods: A retrospective observational study at discharge among patients hospitalized for a COPD exacerbation at Attikon hospital, Athens, Greece. Spirometry was performed using an Easy on-PC™ spirometer. PIF was measured through four DPI resistances using the In-Check™ DIAL. Regression analyses were used to investigate the association between PIF through resistances and spirometric parameters obtained at discharge, comorbidities and demographic parameters.Results: Forty-seven COPD patients (mean [±SD], age 71 [±9] years, 72% males, 51% current smokers) were included in this study. Overall, 85% and 15% were classified as GOLD (2017) groups D and C, respectively. Most prevalent comorbidities were hypertension (70%) and cardiovascular disease (53%). In the final regression model, higher PIF was significantly associated with the following: higher FEV1 and % predicted peak expiratory flow (PEF) for Turbohaler® (R-squared value 0.374); higher FEV1 and diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) for Aerolizer® (R-squared value 0.209) and higher FEV1, younger age and diagnosis of ischemic heart disease (IHD) for Diskus® (R-squared value 0.350). Abstract

En el año 2011, la Asociación Internacional para el Estudio del Cáncer de Pulmón, la Sociedad Americana de Medicina Torácica y la Sociedad Europea de Patología Respiratoria (IASLC / ATS / ERS), publicaron una nueva clasificación histológica del adenocarcinoma pulmonar. Esta clasificación se ocupa de muchos aspectos que afectan directamente a la práctica clínica diaria y abre nuevas puertas para futuras investigaciones. Con ello existe una clara distinción entre le- siones preinvasivas, mínimamente invasivas e invasivas. Gracias a su enfoque multidisciplinario, difiere significativa- mente de la antigua clasificación de 2004 propuesta por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), que fue escrita principalmente por patólogos. Las modificaciones principales de esta clasificación incluyen la abolición del término “carcinoma bronquioloalveolar”, el establecimiento de nuevos sistemas de clasificación para la resección y biopsia, el énfasis de la prueba molecular y la evaluación histológica integral de las muestras tumorales. Con este artículo preten- demos realizar una revisión lo más actualizada posible sobre esta nueva clasificación del adenocarcinoma pulmonar y sus principales implicaciones pronósticas y de tratamiento.

Abstract

Resumen: Objetivo: Describir los resultados conseguidos en una consulta de diagnóstico rápido de cáncer de pulmón (CDR-CP). Comparar estos mismos datos con los pacientes evaluados mediante la sistemática habitual (NCDR-CP). Material y métodos: Se incluyeron los pacientes con CP diagnosticados en la CDR desde octubre 2014 hasta mayo de 2016. Se registró el tiempo desde la primera consulta hasta el inicio del tratamiento, datos de hospitalización, sexo, edad, hábito tabáquico, estadio, tipo histológico y tratamiento. Se han comparado estos mismos datos con los pacientes de CP valorados mediante la NCDR desde enero 2013 hasta mayo 2016. Resultados: Se diagnosticaron de CP 67 pacientes (45,3%) mediante la CDR. Más del 80% de los casos cumplieron las recomendaciones existentes.
