The potential vectors of West Nile virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, WNV) in Doña Ana County, NM, were determined during 2004 and 2005. Trapping was conducted using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention miniature light-traps baited with dry ice, and gravid traps baited with a hay infusion. In addition, sentinel chickens were housed at four of the trapping locations to monitor WNV epizootic transmission. In total, 5,576 pools consisting of 115,797 female mosquitoes were tested for WNV by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, of which 152 from 13 mosquito species representing six genera were positive. Culex tarsalis Coquillett, Culex quinquefasciatus Say, Culex erythrothorax Dyar, Aedes vexans (Meigan), and Psorophora columbiae (Dyar & Knab) accounted for 86% of all detections. Based on the frequency of WNV detection, our data indicate primary and secondary vector roles for Cx. tarsalis and Cx. quinquefasciatus, respectively, with Cx. erythrothorax, Ae. vexans, and Ps. columbiae as occasional vectors of WNV in Dofia Ana County. Other species testing positive for the virus included Aedes aegypti (L.), Anopheles franciscanus McCracken, Culex stigmatosoma Dyar, Culiseta inornata (Williston), Ochlerotatus dorsalis (Meigan), Ochlerotatus sollicitans (Walker), Ochlerotatus trivittatus (Coquillett), and Psorophora signipennis (Coquillett). Although they occurred after initial WNV detections in mosquitoes, in total, 21 seroconversions in sentinel chickens were detected during the study.

To study the susceptibility of wading birds to eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus and to determine their potential as reservoir or amplifying hosts, fledgling glossy ibises (Plegadis falcinellus) and snowy egrets (Egretta thula) were captured in New Jersey (USA) and shipped to Colorado (USA) where they were experimentally inoculated with EEE virus. All 16 snowy egrets and 14 (93%) of 15 of the glossy ibises inoculated became viremic with moderate titers, and all survivors developed neutralizing antibody. Six ibises and two egrets died during the first week after inoculation, and EEE virus was isolated from the tissues of three birds. Our experimental results support field evidence about the relative involvement of glossy ibises and snowy egrets in the epizootiology of EEE virus in New Jersey.

Eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus (EEEV) is perpetuated in eastern North America in a mosquito-wild bird maintenance cycle that involves Culiseta melanura (Coquillett) as the principal enzootic vector and passerine birds as the primary amplifying hosts. We examined the role of birds in the EEEV cycle at a site in southern New Jersey where EEEV cycles annually at high levels. Birds and mosquitoes were sampled during three epiornitics and one season of limited virus activity. We examined antibody prevalence in birds in relation to eight physical and natural history characteristics. Our goal was to compare EEEV cycling in C. melanura and the primary avian hosts better to understand the mechanisms that initiate annual epiornitics. Antibody prevalence was highest in the Blue Jay (62%), Wood Thrush (60%), and Tufted Titmouse (44%). Resident status of birds was the natural history characteristic most closely linked to participation in the EEEV cycle. Species spending the greatest amount of time at our study site (permanent residents, summer residents) had the highest antibody rates. We captured viremic birds as early as 25 May, 51 d before we first detected virus in C. melanura. We recaptured 10 after hatching year adults and one hatching year (HY) bird that seroconverted before we detected virus in C. melanura. We also found EEEV antibody in 15 HY birds up to 31 d before we isolated EEEV from C. melanura. We provide evidence that a cryptic cycle develops weeks before epiornitic cycling is detected in C. melanura by traditional laboratory techniques, indicating that the early season cycle is initiated by the recrudescence of latent virus in previously infected birds.

Aedes albopictus (Skuse) mosquitoes were fed on snowy egrets, Egretta thula (Thayer and Bangs), that had been infected by subcutaneous inoculation of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus. Freshly fed mosquitoes were frozen and tested to determine how much virus they had ingested. Other fed mosquitoes from the same lots were incubated for 7 d at 27 degrees C before testing. Seven lots of Ae. albopictus fed on viremic birds. Based on average amounts of virus ingested and day 7 virus infection rates in mosquitoes from the same lots, the amount of virus required to infect 50% of the mosquitoes was calculated to be 10(2.8) Vero cell plaque-forming units (PFU). The infection threshold (i.e., the amount of virus required to infect from 1 to 5% of mosquitoes) was determined to be < or = 10 PFU per blood meal. These parameters indicate that Ae. albopictus is sufficiently susceptible to infection with EEE virus to enable it to acquire infectious doses from a wide variety of viremic birds and possibly from equines.

Monk parakeets have been introduced into North America within the past 15 years and are apparently becoming established in several geographical regions. Several physiological responses of monk parakeets related to climatic tolerance were examined, and it is concluded that the species is equipped physiologically to occupy most climatic situations with the exception of arctic and subarctic regions and waterless deserts. The standard metabolic rate, determined during the winter, was 44% lower at night (1.17 ml O 2 g -1 hr -1 ) than during the day (1.68 ml O 2 g -1 hr -1 ). Monk parakeets are relatively tolerant of low air temperature (Ta) and showed no signs of hypothermia at Ta's as low as-8°C. The birds were unable to maintain body weight on a diet of air-dried seeds without supplemental water. Monk parakeets possess excellent capabilities for increasing evaporative water loss at high Ta's, being able to dissipate up to 153% of their metabolic heat production at 44°C. This species responds to high Ta's with open-mouthed panting. During panting the thick, moist tongue is raised and lowered in synchrony with the thorax. Thus, monk parakeets may employ lingual flutter to augment evaporative cooling; a mechanism analogous to the gular flutter of other nonpasserine birds.

Metabolism and insulation of monk parakeets were determined in summer and compared with previously reported winter values. Fasting levels of metabolism were the same in winter and summer during the daytime: nighttime values were significantly lower in winter (6.11 versus 8.20 Wkg -1 ). Evaporative water loss at 20-30° C was significantly lower in winter (2.24 versus 3.05 mg H 2 O g -1 h -1 ). Winter birds were better able to maintain body temperature (Tb) independent of ambient temperature (Ta) below 20° C than were summer birds. Coefficients of dry heat transfer determined for Tb-Ta gradients greater than 10° C were not significantly different for the two seasons. Similarly, the slope of the line relating oxygen consumption to Ta below thermal neutrality (i.e. thermal conductance) was the same in winter and summer birds, indicating no seasonal change in overall body insulation. Literature review revealed a relation between seasonal change in fasting metabolic rate (FMR) and body size in birds. Winter FMR as a fraction of summer FMR is inversely, related to body mass (Mb) by the equation; winter FMR/summer FMR=1.49 Mb -0.077 where Mb is in grams. Thus, in small birds FMR is higher in winter than summer, while for large birds (>200 g) the converse is true.

This study examines the relative importance of habitat and season in determining size and composition of foraging flocks of European Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris). We hypothesized that if season was the principal determinant of flock size, variation across seasons (within habitat) would be greater than variation across habitats (within season). The calendar year was divided into 6 seasons corresponding to major stages in the annual cycle of starlings. After measuring the availibility of 15 foraging habitats occurring within the study area, we drove a 184 km route weekly (over a 17 month period) to census starling flock size, species composition, habitat use, and activity.Although flock size was influenced by both season and habitat, it varied relatively less within seasons (across habitats). Only five of nine seasons showed significant habitat effects, and two (of the five) were significant mainly because of large aggregations in habitats with unusually abundant food (e.g. feedlots, cornfields). In contrast, eight of nine habitats showed significant seasonal effects. The only exception (hay) was little used (<1% of all birds observed). For starlings the activities associated with seasonal events of the annual cycle were a major influence on patterns of social foraging. Habitat factors were less important because of constraints imposed by seasonal factors, but under some conditions (e.g. drought, clumped food supply) they became dominant.
