This document presents the mission and strategy of the Italian Competence Centre on Open Science, FAIR, and EOSC. The Competence Centre is an initiative born within the Italian Computing and Data Infrastructure (ICDI), a forum created by representatives of major Italian Research Infrastructures and e-Infrastructures, with the aim of promoting sinergies at the national level, and optimising the Italian participation to European and global challenges in this field, including the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), the European Data Infrastructure (EDI) and HPC. This working paper depicts the mission and objectives of the ICDI Competence Centre, a network of experts with various skills and competences that are supporting the national stakeholders on topics related to Open Science, FAIR principles application and participation to the EOSC. The different actors and roles are described in the document as well as the activities and services offered, and the added value each stakeholder can find the in Competence Centre. The tools and services provided, in particular the concept for the portal, though which the Centre will connect to the national landscape and users, are also presented. A critical step in the data collection process is the prior sharing of definitions central to the content of the survey. This glossary aims to support the respondents throughout the data collection process, within a landscape where the heterogeneity of language use and terminology may otherwise cause misunderstanding and misinterpretation.

Facilitating the use and exchange of biological samples and associated health data in large cross-border collaborations is essential to promoting biomedical research. However, practices for the ethical review of research projects are not harmonized across European countries and there are no systems for mutual recognition of ethical approval decisions (RECognition). Variations in legal frameworks provide an additional level of complexity to this landscape. Thus shared information on Research Ethics Committee (REC) requirements in different EU countries is a critical element for a harmonized and collaborative environment. It leads to a need for an updated mapping of ethics review processes for biobank-based research at European level. To promote a framework of mutual RECgnition, it is key to understand the common needs and challenges and the national level REC workflows, needs and requirements. The Task Force REC, as a part of the ELSI Services of BBMRI-ERIC dedicated to RECs͛ needs and issues, has launched a pilot survey targeting nine EEA Countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Norway, United Kingdom) as the first step of an extensive European REC mapping of practices and legal landscapes for ethical approval.

Lipidomics is a lipid-targeted metabolomics approach that aims to the comprehensive analysis of lipids in biological systems in order to highlight the specific functions of lipid species in health and disease. Lipids play pivotal roles as they are major structural components of the cellular membranes and energy storage molecules but also, as most recently shown, they act as functional and regulatory components of intra- and intercellular signaling. Herein, emphasis is given to the recently highlighted roles of specific bioactive lipids species, as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)-derived mediators (generally known as eicosanoids), endocannabinoids (eCBs), and lysophospholipids (LPLs), and their involvement in the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)-related inflammatory scenario. Indeed, MSCs are a heterogenous population of multipotent cells that have attracted much attention for their potential in regulating inflammation, immunomodulatory capabilities, and reparative roles. The lipidomics of the inflammatory disease osteoarthritis (OA) and the influence of MSCs-derived lipids have also been addressed.

Il sito delle Colombare di Negrar di Valpolicella, oggetto di ricerche all'inizio degli anni Cinquanta del secolo scorso, �� ora al centro di un progetto di indagini archeologiche e paleoambientali a cura dell'Universit�� degli Studi di Milano e della Soprintendenza archeologia belle arti e paesaggio per le province di Verona, Rovigo e Vicenza. La documentazione archeologica finora disponibile indica che il sito fu occupato nel Neolitico recente e prosegu��, apparentemente senza soluzione di continuit��, fino alla tarda et�� del Bronzo. La sua fondazione si inserisce con ogni probabilit�� nel quadro di attivit�� sistematiche di estrazione, lavorazione ed esportazione della pregiata selce dei Lessini occidentali, ma la sua lunga durata implica un radicamento nel territorio di carattere in senso lato agricolo. Una metodologia di indagine rigorosamente interdisciplinare �� orientata allo studio delle relazioni tra la comunit�� stanziata alle Colombare e il territorio circostante, e si avvale del contributo di numerosi istituti di ricerca. Particolarmente importanti in questo contesto di studi sono i risultati degli studi pollinici e archeobotanici che evidenziano una economia agricola relativamente sviluppata, con tracce di cerealicoltura e attivit�� di raccolta di frutti spontanei. Tra questi risultano particolarmente importanti la vite e il nocciolo, specie che dovevano essere presenti nel sito e probabilmente accudite e preservate in quanto sistematicamente utilizzate per l'alimentazione umana. Le datazioni radiocarboniche documentano, a partire dagli ultimi secoli del quinto millennio avanti Cristo, una riduzione delle specie arboree a vantaggio delle specie erbacee, interpretabile come effetto di estesi fenomeni di disboscamento. I dati archeozoologici, per quanto sostanzialmente inaffidabili dal punto di vista funzionale e del dettaglio cronologico, segnalano una prevalenza di animali domestici, tra cui spiccano grandi bovini tipicamente neolitici e attivit�� di caccia specialmente a carico dei grandi ungulati di habitat forestale. I dati di estremo dettaglio derivanti dalle ricerche paleoambientali alle Colombare di Negrar consentono alcune considerazioni sulla costruzione del paesaggio agrario in area alpina e prealpina durante la preistoria recente e la protostoria, e sulle sue peculiarit�� rispetto al meglio noto ambito Padano., IpoTESI di Preistoria, V. 14 (2021)

The world is facing an unprecedented public health challenge with the COVID-19 pandemic; this has necessitated numerous efforts being deployed by governments, health agencies and individual institutions – including in the biobanking community – to develop effective tests, toolkits, treatments and vaccines to stem its spread and help fight it. To achieve this goal, the collection, analysis and timely sharing of samples and related data becomes instrumental in collective global research efforts. Aligned to these efforts is the prevalence for automated data processing and digital technologies such as location data and contact tracing applications as part of the toolkits. In this respect, biobanks are important infrastructures for access to these samples and data. Besides availability, quality and technical infrastructures, also ethical, legal and societal issues (ELSI) are particularly crucial in this regard. Public health ethics, personal data protection, ethics of data sharing, protection of consent and vulnerability as well as compliance issues within international data sharing have gained urgency in COVID-19 research. Against this backdrop, BBMRI-ERIC ELSI Services & Research held a webinar that took a closer look at these issues. The webinar took place on April 24th, 2020; the recording is available here. This document not only answers the questions posed during the webinar but ventures into much detail on the topics raised as a result. It also showcases two examples from Germany (presented by Prof. Roland Jahns) and Italy (presented by Prof. Marialuisa Lavitrano), as well as a detailed commentary on contact-tracing-apps from a legal perspective (presented by Gauthier Chassang). The document thus lays the foundation for further discussion on ELSI and COVID-19 in the context of biobanking.
