23. Electrochemical degradation of methylene blue accompanied with the reduction of CO2 by using carbon nanotubes grown on carbon fiber electrodes.

Abstract

In this study, the degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) dye accompanied with the reduction of CO2 was performed in an electrochemical (EC) process by using carbon nanotubes grown on carbon fiber (CNTs/CFM) electrodes as the cathode and anode in a two-compartment electrochemical cell. The growth of CNTs on CFM via chemical vapor deposition led to the significant improvement in physicochemical properties of CNTs/CFM which were beneficial for the EC process. The effects of various operating parameters including supporting electrolytes (KHCO3 and H2SO4), initial concentration of MB (5, 10, 15 and 20 mg L− 1) and applied currents (10, 50 and 100 mA) on the degradation of MB were investigated. The results confirmed the vital influence of applied current and initial concentration of MB while the supporting electrolytes played a minor role in MB degradation. On the contrary, the influence of electrolytes in the performance of CO2 reduction was more significant on the production and selectivity of generated products. The optimal electrochemical system included 0.1 M KHCO3 as the electrolyte and an applied current of 50 mA in anodic cell and CO2 saturated solution in cathodic cell; such a system resulted in the EC degradation efficiency of 72% at the MB initial concentration of 10 mg L− 1 in the anodic cell and production of 4.7 mM cm− 2 CO, 67 mM cm− 2 H2, and 11.3 mg L− 1 oxalic acid in the cathodic cell corresponding to the Faradaic efficiencies of 28, 40 and 4%, respectively. The results of reusability test deduced that the stability of CNTs/CFM was still satisfactory after 4 runs. The results of this study demonstrated the good applicability of CNTs/CFM to be simultaneously used the electrodes for the EC oxidation of dye and the EC reduction of CO2 to obtain valuable compounds. Abstract

In this study, TiO2 nanotube (TiO2NT) arrays were successfully synthesized via two-step anodization in organic electrolyte solutions composed of ethylene glycol, 0.5 wt% NH4F, and 3.0 wt% H2O. The effect of aged electrolytes on the morphological and photocatalytic properties of the obtained TiO2NTs was investigated. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, UV–Vis absorption spectrometry, and photoluminescence measurements were also conducted to evaluate the physicochemical properties of the TiO2NTs synthesized with electrolytes of various ages. The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2NTs was characterized by photocurrent measurements and phenol degradation assay. The results confirmed the strong dependence of the morphology of the NTs on the aged electrolyte. Anodization of Ti foil with aged electrolytes led to not only reductions in morphological defects but also enhancement of the order of the TiO2NTs. The longer the aging time, the thicker the NT wall and the shorter the tube length obtained. Prolonged aging of the electrolyte resulted in the formation of TiO2NTs with a nanoporous surface, which could be attributed to the deposition of Ti(OH)4. The results collectively indicate that improvements in the photocatalytic property of the TiO2NT samples could be obtained when synthesis is conducted with aged electrolytes. The aging process of the electrolytes was clearly demonstrated to promote the structural integrity and photocatalytic ability of the obtained TiO2NTs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Effects of Burn-off and Activation Temperature on Preparation of Activated Carbon from Corn Cob Agrowaste by CO2and Steam

Abstract

Previous studies have successfully demonstrated that corn cob is a suitable precursor for production of good activated carbon by chemical activation. However, respond to the need for cleaner production, this study focuses on the physical activation by gasifying agents such as CO2and steam. The activation temperatures under investigation are 1073 and 1173 K. Within the limit of 50 wt% burn-off, experimental results reveal that the BET surface area, pore volume, and average pore diameter of the resulting activated carbon generally increase with the extent of burn-off in both gasifying agents and at both temperatures. The higher activation temperature can overcome the drawbacks of a longer period of activation required to attain larger surface area and can offer higher potential to produce activated carbon of greater adsorption capacity from agriculture wastes such as corn cobs. Additionally, the BET surface areas of properly prepared activated carbons can satisfy commercial requirements, when compared with commercial activated carbon. The BET surface areas of the activated carbons after about 71 and 59 wt% burn-off of CO2and steam activations at 1173 K are 1705 and 1315 m2/g, respectively, indicating high adsorption capacities. Thus, it is feasible to produce high-quality microporous activated carbon from corn cob agrowaste using N2carbonization followed by physical activation with CO2or steam.
