This book presents a child-centred approach to migrant children's experiences in education. Using a decolonising framework, the book interrogates the diversity of migrant experiences in the global South and North.The book brings together researchers and practitioners from education, childhood studies, sociology, and linguistics to debate and theorise key methodological and empirical issues in migrant children's experiences through education. It focuses on how diverse forms of global mobilities are key to transforming educational experiences of children and considers the interplay of class, race, gender, geography, and learning settings. By doing so, the book uncovers particular challenges for addressing sustainable development goals relating to education and inclusive development. Diversifying the study of migration and development, the book challenges the Eurocentrism of the discipline and contributes to ongoing efforts to liberate the field from labels and discourses that further marginalise migrant children.Using an intersectional and decolonising approach to address an important gap in the diversity of migrant experiences, the book will be of great interest to researchers, scholars, and students in the field of migration studies, sociology of education, intercultural education, and international development.

This compilation delves into the attitudes of teachers in the Greek educational system concerning their cooperation with the parents of newcomers through a questionnaire employed as a quantitative tool and results analyzed through a statistical analysis. In one study, the authors examine DREAMers'motivations for attending college and for persisting throughout the college application process. Particular attention is paid to their parents'influence during this process. Practices that teachers can use for promoting immigrant students'social relationships and participation are described using research took place in North-Finland and included immigrant students from a variety of countries. The closing study examines acculturation, a process resulting in the imprinting of the host culture on the non-native culture.

In this edited volume, authors analyze how symbolic boundaries of belonging are negotiated and reflected upon by school actors in different educational contexts and how that contributes to a richer understanding of the ways in which'we-ness'acts as a fundamentally structuring force in immigrant incorporation. The analyses draw on cultural sociologist Jeffrey Alexander's work on civil sphere theory, thus grasping both the solidaristic dimensions of incorporation and processes of exclusion. Chapters are guided by two major themes: school choice/ethnic school segregation and religion/faith in schooling. Both of these themes provide rich examples of how immigrant school actors negotiate the symbolic codes that define boundaries of belonging/non-belonging in different communities. This focus will broaden the understanding of how educational practices and formal schooling works in relation to immigrant incorporation into different school cultures, as well as in the Swedish civilsphere.

One fifth of the population of the United States belongs to the immigrant or second generations. While the US is generally thought of as the immigrant society par excellence, it now has a number of rivals in Europe. The Next Generation brings together studies from top immigration scholars to explore how the integration of immigrants affects the generations that come after. The original essays explore the early beginnings of the second generation in the United States and Western Europe, exploring the overall patterns of success of the second generation.While there are many striking similarities in the situations of the children of labor immigrants coming from outside the highly developed worlds of Europe and North America, wherever one looks, subtle features of national and local contexts interact with characteristics of the immigrant groups themselves to create variations in second-generation trajectories. This study is concerned with the ways in which a dozen'knowledge-based societies'of Western Europe and the English-speaking world respond to unprecedented cultural and linguistic diversity resulting from the flow of immigrants and refugees since World War II. It asks how public policy has sought to use schooling to minimize the potentially divisive and inequitable effects of this diversity and to provide opportunities to the children of immigrants. It asks also how the nature of each of these societies affects the meaning of integration into each of them.
