Abstract

Zero-index materials (ZIMs) have become popular because of their unique optical behaviors, such as infinite effective wavelengths and spatially uniform electromagnetic distributions. The all-dielectric ZIMs, Dirac-like cone-based zero-index materials (DCZIMs) are used in various photonic applications owing to their superior optical properties, such as finite impedances, zero Ohmic losses, and high compatibility with photonic circuits. We propose a more general and simple approach that is independent of the Dirac-like cone mode for realizing near-zero index (NZI) behavior in all-dielectric waveguides. This approach can be applied to various dielectric materials up to the necessary NZI bandwidth. Si3N4 and Ge NZI waveguides are demonstrated for achieving broadband and narrowband NZI, respectively. The proposed broadband NZI waveguide achieves a bandwidth of 140 nm for neff < 0.1 (neff = effective refractive index) at telecommunication wavelengths, which is 2 times larger than that of the reported NZI waveguides. Further, NZI waveguide-based beam steering was demonstrated with a wide steering range delta theta 105 degrees across the radiation angle of theta 0 degree. The proposed NZI-waveguide design principle and beam steering present a feasible approach for the development of photonic circuits and zero-index-based photonic applications.

2. Finite-Area Membrane Metasurfaces for Enhancing Light-Matter Coupling in Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Abstract

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are at the forefront of nanophotonics because of their exceptional optical characteristics. The 2D architecture of TMDCs facilitates efficient light absorption and emission, holding tantalizing potential for next-generation nanophotonic and quantum devices. Yet, the atomic thinness limits their interaction volume with light, affecting light-matter interaction and quantum efficiency. The light coupling in the 2D layered TMDCs can be enhanced by integration with photonic structure, and the metasurfaces supporting bound states in the continuum (BICs) offer strong confinement of optical fields, ideal for coupling with 2D TMDCs. Here, we demonstrate enhanced light-matter coupling by integrating TMDC monolayers, including WSe2and MoS2, with a finite-area membrane metasurface, leading to amplified and high-quality-factor (Q-factor) spontaneous emission from quasi-BIC-coupled TMDC monolayers. The high-Q-factor emission extends over an area with a scale of a few micrometers while maintaining the high-Qfactor across the emission area. Notably, the suspended finite-area membrane metasurface, which is freestanding in air rather than positioned atop a substrate, minimizes radiation loss while enhancing light-matter interaction in the TMDC monolayer. Furthermore, the predominantly in-plane dipole orientation of excitons within TMDC monolayers results in distinctive enhancement behaviors for emission, contingent on the excitation power, when coupled with quasi-BIC modes exhibiting TE and TM resonances. This work introduces a nanophotonic platform for robust coupling of membrane metasurfaces with 2D materials, offering possibilities for developing 2D material-based nanophotonic and quantum devices.

3. Solution‐Processed Perovskite Quantum Dot Quasi‐BIC Laser from Miniaturized Low‐Lateral‐Loss Cavity.

Abstract

Laser devices produced via solution‐processed perovskite quantum dots (QDs) offer broad spectral tunability as well as ease of fabrication. Utilizing quasi‐bound states in the continuum (quasi‐BIC) modes, solution‐processed QD laser devices have been demonstrated with a nanostructure coated in a thin‐film gain media configuration. However, light leakage through thin‐film guiding from the cavity side edges becomes more pronounced when shrinking the cavity size, posing challenges for the miniaturization of quasi‐BIC‐based lasers. Here, the fabrication of well‐defined patterns of QDs via a solution process allows them to take advantage of the pattern edges to reduce losses through the cavity edges. A single‐mode BIC laser is reported by using CsPbBr3 QDs with a narrow linewidth of ≈0.1 nm. Importantly, a miniaturized quasi‐BIC laser is realized with a device size as small as 10 × 10 µm2, making it the smallest among existing solution‐processed BIC lasers.
