A species of haplochromine cichlid fish of the genus Diplotaxodon Trewavas, endemic to Lake Malaŵi is described: Diplotaxodon dentatus, new species. All eight type specimens were trawled together off Thumbi East Island in the Southeastern arm of the lake at 73 meters in 1985. They were initially identified as D. argenteus because the teeth on the oral jaws were fully exposed with a closed mouth. The shorter snout length of D. dentatus (26.6–29.2 % HL) clearly separates it from D. argenteus (31.7–34.2 % HL). A plot of a principal components analysis further supports the separation of D. dentatus from D. argenteus.

Two species of haplochromine cichlid fishes of the genus Diplotaxodon Trewavas, endemic to Lake Malaŵi are described: Diplotaxodon longimaxilla, new species, and Diplotaxodon altus, new species. Diplotaxodon altus is diagnosed from other species in the genus based on body depth (35.1–37.8% SL), number of gill rakers (21–26), and a smaller cheek depth (18.2–20.0% HL). Diplotaxodon longimaxilla is delimited from other Diplotaxodon spp. based on body depth (28.9–32.4% SL), horizontal eye diameter (HED 27.1–32.1% HL), smaller cheek depth (15.2–19.4% HL), and number of lateral-line scales (35–38). Other authors have indicated that several other Diplotaxodon spp. occur, but too few specimens were available to permit detailed comparisons. The two new species occur sympatrically at depths of between 40–130 m. Processed fish and fish products have high nutritional value, longer shelf life and fetch better prices on the market in contrast to freshly caught fish which are highly perishable. Processing, however, alters nutrient composition of a product underpinning the need for caution when consuming processed products. The study analyzed the effect of traditional smoking and sun drying on proximate composition (moisture, protein, fat and ash) of Diplotaxodon species locally known as Ndunduma. This is an important commercial cichlid species harvested across the entire Lake Malawi by both artisanal and commercial fishers. Fresh Diplotaxodon fish samples were collected from fishers’ boats in the southwestern part of Lake Malawi, Malawi immediately after catch early in the morning. The fish were washed then weighed and thereafter, smoked in a traditional smoking kiln and sun dried on reed mats. Determined percent moisture, protein, fat and ash content for smoked fish were: 12.22±0.05, 55.30±1.67, 25.31±2.78 and 12.96±0.72, respectively, while corresponding values for fish that were sun dried were: 24.28±0.14, 52.80±1.28, 22.36±0.26 and 13.81±0.14, respectively. Overall, results show reduced protein content in processed fish (smoked and sun dried) (P0.05). Significantly low moisture content in smoked fish is indicative of a product with longer shelf life since moisture favours rapid microbial growth causing freshness quality deterioration. Deep water environments are characterized by low levels of available light at increasingly narrow spectra, great hydrostatic pressure and reduced dissolved oxygen - conditions predicted to exert highly specific selection pressures. In Lake Malawi over 800 cichlid species have evolved, and this adaptive radiation extends into the “twilight zone” below 100 metres. We use population-level RAD-seq data to investigate whether four endemic deep water species (Diplotaxodon spp.) have experienced divergent selection within this environment. We identify candidate genes including regulators of photoreceptor function, photopigments, lens morphology and haemoglobin, many not previously implicated in cichlid adaptive radiations. Co-localization of functionally linked genes suggests co-adapted “supergene” complexes. Comparisons of Diplotaxodon to the broader Lake Malawi radiation using genome resequencing data revealed functional substitutions in candidate genes. Our data provide unique insights into genomic adaptation to life at depth, and suggest genome-level specialisation for deep water habitat as an important process in cichlid radiation.

Major environmental changes can trigger dramatic evolutionary change. Lake Malawi contains an adaptive radiation of more than 800 haplochromine species that have evolved within the last 2–4 million years. Using mitochondrial DNA sequences, we reconstructed temporal changes in effective size of 46 populations from 28 species within the flock. All populations showed expansions within the last million years, but timescales differed substantially. Offshore pelagic species of the genera Diplotaxodon and Rhamphochromis underwent rapid population expansions on average 175,000 and 290,000 years ago, respectively. By contrast, shallow-water benthic-living species underwent rapid population expansions within the last 50,000 years. These results suggest that populations of pelagic taxa persisted through major Pleistocene megadroughts between 160,000 and 90,000 years ago when the lake was smaller, shallower, more saline and turbid. They also suggest that populations of inshore demersal taxa were smaller or absent during these low stands, only expanding when the lake rose towards present levels. Given many shallow-water and benthic-living haplochromine species in Lake Malawi exhibit extreme local endemism, we suggest that many have originated since the last major lake rise. Such new ecological opportunity may have been critical for the evolution of high cichlid species richness that now characterises littoral habitats.

Male nuptial colour hues are important for the maintenance of reproductive isolation among cichlid fish species, and environmental changes that lead to narrower light spectra can lead to hybridization. However, cichlid species can naturally co-occur in narrow light spectrum habitats, such as turbid shallow lakes and the deep benthic zones of African rift lakes. Closely related species from narrow light spectrum habitats tend to differ little in the palette of male nuptial colours, thus for these taxa differences in colour patterns may be more important than differences in colour hue for species recognition. To investigate this hypothesis we examined morphometric and genetic differentiation among males of four sympatric putative species within the deep-water genus Diplotaxodon . These taxa live in a narrow-light spectrum environment where only blue light is present, and males differ primarily in ‘monochromatic’ black, white and silver patterning of the body and fins. Significant genetic differentiation was present among taxa in both microsatellite DNA and mitochondrial DNA, including one pair with no significant morphometric differentiation. Thus, these taxa represent reproductively isolated biological species, a result consistent with male nuptial patterning being important for species recognition and assortative mating. As such, we suggest that narrow-light spectra need not always represent barriers to effective visually mediated mate recognition.

Allopatric processes of speciation have routinely been presented to explain the extraordinary radiation of the East African Great Lakes cichlid fish species flocks. The 21 or more species of pelagic cichlids within the Lake Malawi flock appear to have lake-wide distributions that challenge such a concept. Data from six microsatellite DNA loci indicate single, panmictic populations across the lake of three Diplotaxodon species. Levels of variability at these loci suggest that populations have been large and stable. Mitochondrial DNA sequence data (872 bp of control region + 981 bp of the NADH-2) from 90 species, representing all major clades within the Lake Malawi flock, indicate reciprocal monophyly of the pelagic clade. We suggest that these data support a hypothesis that speciation in sympatry is more plausible (and widespread) within the cichlid species flocks than previously thought.

Lake Malawi/Niassa is the second largest rift valley lake in Africa, with an area of 28 800 km2, and an average and maximum depth of 292 m and>700 m, respectively. The lake is well known for the great diversity of fish occurring in the inshore zone. However, the offshore fish community is poorly documented. To rectify this, regular sampling was undertaken over two years, using trawl and gillnets at six offshore locations. This paper reports on the species composition, spatial distribution and breeding biology of the dominant cichlids species from the offshore pelagic zone. Cichlids formed approximately 88% of the offshore fish biomass. Most abundant were two species of zooplanktivores in the genus Diplotaxodon that made up 71% of the offshore fish biomass. An undescribed species, given the cheironym D. ‘bigeye’, was mainly found at a depth of 220 m during the day, but moved into near surface waters at night when the moon was full. This species was absent from the shallow regions of the lake. The most abundant offshore species was D. limnothrissa, which was distributed evenly throughout the lake to depths of 220 m. A less common offshore zooplanktivore was Copadichromis quadrimaculatus that formed 5% of the biomass and was confined to the upper 100 m of the water column. The main piscivores were in the genus Rhamphochromis and formed approximately 10% of the offshore fish biomass. The two dominant taxa were R. longiceps and the ‘large Rhamphochromis’ group, and both were more common in the southern half of the lake. The former occurred mainly in the upper 100 m of the water column and the latter mainly at depths of 100–150 m. The length at maturity and fecundity for the dominant offshore species were estimated and seasonal breeding cycles determined from gonad activity and gonado-somatic indices.

1. Studies of diel feeding periodicity, rates of food consumption and diet composition of pelagic fish were undertaken to resolve the dispute regarding the existence of a vacant niche for a pelagic zooplanktivore in Lake Malawi. 2. Six species of zooplanktivore were abundant in the offshore pelagic zone, these were: Diplotaxodon limnothrissa, D. 'bigeye', Rhamphochromis longiceps and Copadichromis quadrimaculatus (all haplochromine cichlids), Synodontis njassae (Mochokidae) and Engraulicypris sardella (Cyprinidae). The main piscivores were cichlids of the genus Rhamphochromis. 3. All cichlids were daytime feeders; some showed peaks in feeding activity at dawn and dusk that were related to vertical migration patterns of their prey. Synodontis njassae was able to feed throughout the day, but fed most actively at night. 4. Food consumption: biomass ratios (Q/B yr-1) calculated from diel stomach contents data were 5.87-7.13 for D. limnothrissa, 12.79 for D. 'bigeye', 4.20-24.7 for R. longiceps and 6.45 for S. njassae. Annual Q/B ratios for other species, which ranged from 4.74 to 9.28, were obtained from an empirical model relating food consumption to fish morphology. Published estimates were used for E. sardella and Opsaridium microcephalum (Cyprinidae). An estimate of total prey consumption by the pelagic fish population was obtained from Q/B ratios and fish biomass estimates from acoustic surveys covering the entire offshore pelagic zone of the lake (24 000 km2). 5. Diplotaxodon limnothrissa, R. longiceps and C. quadrimaculatus had a broad range of diets, with the ability to switch from crustacean zooplankton to larvae and pupae of Chaoborus edulis (Diptera) or larval and juvenile E. sardella. Diplotaxodon 'bigeye' and S. njassae fed almost exclusively on fourth-instar larvae and pupae of C. edulis. Engraulicypris sardella fed mainly on crustacean zooplankton. The main prey of the large piscivorous Rhamphochromis species were Diplotaxodon spp. and E. sardella. 6. The fish community consumed only 3% of estimated crustacean zooplankton production directly. Predation pressure was intense (> 80% of estimated production consumed by predators) on late instars of the zooplanktivorous C. edulis larvae and on E. sardella larvae. Rhamphochomis spp. consumed 22-43% of estimated production of the zooplankton-eating fishes. 7. Although many members of the fish community do not feed directly on crustacean zooplankton, so that the food-chain supporting fish production involves an extra trophic level, it is considered that the endemic fish community is well adapted to feeding on the low-density prey in the pelagic zone, and that there is no vacant feeding niche.

Target strength (TS) may be estimated as a function of fish length (L) by comparing in situ acoustic measurements with the fish size distribution from trawl catches. The acoustic and fishing data are directly comparable only if they are samples from the same population, but the TS measurements depend on the detection of isolated targets which may not be representative of the ensonified population. Errors may occur through the false detection of multiple targets, and the size-dependence of schooling density means that larger fish are more likely to be detected. We show that such effects can result in the estimated TS being biased high. We describe a stochastic method for estimating the constant b in the formula TS=20 Log (L)−b, by a least-squares fitting procedure. It is assumed that the echo-amplitude has a Rayleigh distribution. The method has been applied to data from surveys of cichlids in Lake Malawi. From 33 independent measurements of Diplotaxodonspp. around 15 cm in length, b is 67.4±0.2 dB.

A new species of pelagic haplochromine cichlid of the genus Diplotaxodon is described from Lake Malawi, Africa. The species, which attains a size of 14cm s. L., feeds mainly on zooplankton, shows no sexual dimorphism in size or body proportions, breeds throughout the year and lives at depths of 20 to at least 120 m. Approximately 600 tonnes of the species were caught by trawlers in 1990–1991, in the south–eastern arm of the lake alone. It appears that this species is a major component of the pelagic community, and occupies an ecological role similar to that of the clupeid Limnothrissa miodon in Lake Tanganyika.
