Search

Late-time ($\sim$ year) radio follow-up of optically-discovered tidal disruption events (TDEs) is increasingly resulting in detections at radio wavelengths, and there is growing evidence for this late-time radio activity to be common to the broad class of sub-relativistic TDEs. Detailed studies of some of these TDEs at radio wavelengths are also challenging the existing models for radio emission. Using all-sky multi-epoch data from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), taken as a part of the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS), we searched for radio counterparts to a sample of optically-discovered TDEs. We detected late-time emission at RACS frequencies (742-1032\,MHz) in five TDEs, reporting the independent discovery of radio emission from TDE AT2019ahk and extending the time baseline out to almost 3000\,days for some events. Overall, we find that at least $22^{+15}_{-11}$\% of the population of optically-discovered TDEs has detectable radio emission in the RACS survey, while also noting that the true fraction can be higher given the limited cadence (2 epochs separated by $\sim 3\,$ years) of the survey. Finally, we project that the ongoing higher-cadence ($\sim 2$\,months) ASKAP Variable and Slow Transients (VAST) survey can detect $\sim 20$ TDEs in its operational span (4\,yrs), given the current rate from optical surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, comments welcome

Several sources of repeating coherent bursts of radio emission with periods of many minutes have now been reported in the literature. These ``ultra-long period'' (ULP) sources have no clear multi-wavelength counterparts and challenge canonical pulsar emission models, leading to debate regarding their nature. In this work we report the discovery of a bright, highly-polarised burst of radio emission at low Galactic latitude as part of a wide-field survey for transient and variable radio sources. ASKAP\,J175534.9$-$252749.1 does not appear to repeat, with only a single intense two-minute $\sim 200$\,mJy burst detected from 60~hours of observations. The burst morphology and polarisation properties are comparable to those of classical pulsars but the duration is more than one hundred times longer, analogous to ULPs. No comparable bursts are detected in the rest of our widefield survey to date. Combined with the existing ULP population, this suggests that these sources have a strong Galactic latitude dependence and hints at an unexplored population of transient and variable radio sources in the thin disk of the Milky Way. The resemblance of this burst with both ULPs and pulsars calls for a unified coherent emission model for objects with spin periods from milliseconds to tens of minutes. However, whether or not these are all neutron stars or have the same underlying power source remains open for debate.

We present a systematic search for tidal disruption events (TDEs) using radio data from the Variables and Slow Transients (VAST) Pilot Survey conducted using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Historically, TDEs have been identified using observations at X-ray, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths. After discovery, a few dozen TDEs have been shown to have radio counterparts through follow-up observations. With systematic time-domain radio surveys becoming available, we can now identify new TDEs in the radio regime. A population of radio-discovered TDEs has the potential to provide several key insights including an independent constraint on their volumetric rate. We conducted a search to select variable radio sources with a single prominent radio flare and a position consistent within 2$\sigma$ of the nucleus of a known galaxy. While TDEs were the primary target of our search, sources identified in this search may also be consistent with active galactic nuclei exhibiting unusual flux density changes at the timescales probed, uncharacteristically bright supernovae, or a population of gamma-ray bursts. We identify a sample of 12 radio-bright candidate TDEs. The timescales and luminosities range from ~6 to 230 days and ~10$^{38}$ to 10$^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$, consistent with models of radio emission from TDEs that launch relativistic jets. After calculating the detection efficiency of our search using a Monte Carlo simulation of TDEs, and assuming all 12 sources are jetted TDEs, we derive a volumetric rate for jetted TDEs of 0.80$^{+0.31}_{-0.23}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$, consistent with previous empirically estimated rates., Comment: 37 pages, 37 figures, accepted to ApJ

The relativistic outflows that produce Long GRBs (LGRBs) can be described by a structured jet model where prompt $\gamma$-ray emission is restricted to a narrow region in the jet's core. Viewing the jet off-axis from the core, a population of afterglows without an associated GRB detection can be predicted. In this work, we conduct an archival search for these `orphan' afterglows (OAs) with minute-cadence, deep ($g\sim23$) data from the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) taken as part of the Deeper, Wider, Faster programme (DWF). We introduce a method to select fast-evolving OA candidates within DWF data that comprises a machine learning model, based on a realistic synthetic population of OAs. Using this classifier, we recover 51 OA candidates. Of these candidates, 42 are likely flare events from M-class stars. The remaining nine possess quiescent, coincident sources in archival data with angular profiles consistent with a star and are inconsistent with the expected population of LGRB host galaxies. We therefore conclude that these are likely Galactic events. We calculate an upper limit on the rate of OAs down to $g<22$ AB mag of 7.46\,deg$^{-2}$yr$^{-1}$ using our criteria and constrain possible jet structures. We also place an upper limit of the characteristic angle between the $\gamma$-ray emitting region and the jet's half opening angle. For a smooth power-law and a power-law with core jet model respectively, these values are $58.3^{\circ}$ and $56.6^{\circ}$, for a power-law index of 0.8 and $75.3^{\circ}$ and $76.8^{\circ}$ for a power-law index of 1.2., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Gravitational lensing is proven to be one of the most efficient tools for studying the Universe. The spectral confirmation of such sources requires extensive calibration. This paper discusses the spectral extraction technique for the case of multiple source spectra being very near each other. Using the masking technique, we first detect high Signal-to-Noise (S/N) peaks in the CCD spectral image corresponding to the location of the source spectra. This technique computes the cumulative signal using a weighted sum, yielding a reliable approximation for the total counts contributed by each source spectrum. We then proceed with the subtraction of the contaminating spectra. Large widefield surveys make possible the serendipitous discovery of rare sub-classes of pulsars. One such class are "spider"-type pulsar binaries, comprised of a pulsar in a compact orbit with a low-mass (sub)stellar companion. In a search for circularly-polarized radio sources in ASKAP Pilot Survey observations, we discovered highly variable and circularly polarized emission from a radio source within the error region of the $\gamma$-ray source {4FGL}~J1646.5$-$4406. The variability is consistent with the eclipse of a compact, steep-spectrum source behind ablated material from a companion in a $\sim 5.3\,$h binary orbit. Based on the eclipse properties and spatial coincidence with {4FGL} J1646.5$-$4406, we argue that the source is likely a recycled pulsar in a "redback" binary system. Using properties of the eclipses from ASKAP and Murchison Widefield Array observations, we provide broad constraints on the properties of the eclipse medium. We identified a potential optical/infra-red counterpart in archival data consistent with a variable low-mass star. Using the Parkes Radio Telescope "Murriyang" and MeerKAT, we searched extensively for radio pulsations but yielded no viable detections of pulsed emission. We suggest that the non-detection of pulses is due to scattering in the intra-binary material, but scattering from the ISM can also plausibly explain the pulse non-detections if the interstellar dispersion measure exceeds $\sim$600$\,$pc$\,$cm$^{-3}$. Orbital constraints derived from optical observations of the counterpart would be highly valuable for future $\gamma$-ray pulsation searches, which may confirm the source nature as a pulsar., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 13 Pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

We present radio observations of 24 confirmed and candidate strongly lensed quasars identified by the Gaia Gravitational Lenses (GraL) working group. We detect radio emission from 8 systems in 5.5 and 9 GHz observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and 12 systems in 6 GHz observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). The resolution of our ATCA observations is insufficient to resolve the radio emission into multiple lensed images, but we do detect multiple images from 11 VLA targets. We have analysed these systems using our observations in conjunction with existing optical measurements, including measuring offsets between the radio and optical positions, for each image and building updated lens models. These observations significantly expand the existing sample of lensed radio quasars, suggest that most lensed systems are detectable at radio wavelengths with targeted observations, and demonstrate the feasibility of population studies with high resolution radio imaging.

We present the detection of 661 known pulsars observed with the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope at 888 MHz as a part of the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS). Detections were made through astrometric coincidence and we estimate the false alarm rate of our sample to be ~0.5%. Using archival data at 400 and 1400 MHz, we estimate the power law spectral indices for the pulsars in our sample and find that the mean spectral index is -1.78 +/- 0.6. However, we also find that a single power law is inadequate to model all the observed spectra. With the addition of the flux densities between 150 MHz and 3 GHz from various imaging surveys, we find that up to 40% of our sample shows deviations from a simple power law model. Using Stokes V measurements from the RACS data, we measured the circular polarization fraction for 9% of our sample and find that the mean polarization fraction is ~10% (consistent between detections and upper limits). Using the dispersion measure (DM) derived distance we estimate the pseudo luminosity of the pulsars and do not find any strong evidence for a correlation with the pulsars' intrinsic properties., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (18 pages, 16 figures), comments are welcome

We present the detection of rotationally modulated, circularly polarized radio emission from the T8 brown dwarf WISE J062309.94-045624.6 between 0.9 and 2.0 GHz. We detected this high proper motion ultracool dwarf with the Australian SKA Pathfinder in $1.36$ GHz imaging data from the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey. We observed WISE J062309.94-045624.6 to have a time and frequency averaged Stokes I flux density of $4.17\pm0.41$ mJy beam$^{-1}$, with an absolute circular polarization fraction of $66.3\pm9.0\%$, and calculated a specific radio luminosity of $L_{\nu}\sim10^{14.8}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$. In follow-up observations with the Australian Telescope Compact Array and MeerKAT we identified a multi-peaked pulse structure, used dynamic spectra to place a lower limit of $B>0.71$ kG on the dwarf's magnetic field, and measured a $P=1.912\pm0.005$ h periodicity which we concluded to be due to rotational modulation. The luminosity and period we measured are comparable to those of other ultracool dwarfs observed at radio wavelengths. This implies that future megahertz to gigahertz surveys, with increased cadence and improved sensitivity, are likely to detect similar or later-type dwarfs. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are bursts of electromagnetic energy released when supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centers of galaxies violently disrupt a star that passes too close. TDEs provide a new window to study accretion onto SMBHs; in some rare cases, this accretion leads to launching of a relativistic jet, but the necessary conditions are not fully understood. The best studied jetted TDE to date is Swift J1644+57, which was discovered in gamma-rays, but was too obscured by dust to be seen at optical wavelengths. Here we report the optical discovery of AT2022cmc, a rapidly fading source at cosmological distance (redshift z=1.19325) whose unique lightcurve transitioned into a luminous plateau within days. Observations of a bright counterpart at other wavelengths, including X-rays, sub-millimeter, and radio, supports the interpretation of AT2022cmc as a jetted TDE containing a synchrotron "afterglow", likely launched by a SMBH with spin $a \gtrsim 0.3$. Using 4 years of Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey data, we calculate a rate of $0.02 ^{+ 0.04 }_{- 0.01 }$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ for on-axis jetted TDEs based on the luminous, fast-fading red component, thus providing a measurement complementary to the rates derived from X-ray and radio observations. Correcting for the beaming angle effects, this rate confirms that about 1% of TDEs have relativistic jets. We report the discovery of a highly circularly polarized, variable, steep-spectrum pulsar in the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) Variables and Slow Transients (VAST) survey. The pulsar is located about $1^\circ$ from the center of the Large Magellanic Cloud, and has a significant fractional circular polarization of $\sim$20%. We discovered pulsations with a period of 322.5 ms, dispersion measure (DM) of 157.5 pc cm$^{-3}$, and rotation measure (RM) of $+456$ rad m$^{-2}$ using observations from the MeerKAT and the Parkes telescopes. This DM firmly places the source, PSR J0523$-$7125, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This RM is extreme compared to other pulsars in the LMC (more than twice that of the largest previously reported one). The average flux density of $\sim$1 mJy at 1400 MHz and $\sim$25 mJy at 400 MHz places it among the most luminous radio pulsars known. It likely evaded previous discovery because of its very steep radio spectrum (spectral index $\alpha \approx -3$, where $S_\nu \propto \nu^\alpha$) and broad pulse profile (duty cycle $\gtrsim35$%). We discuss implications for searches for unusual radio sources in continuum images, as well as extragalactic pulsars in the Magellanic Clouds and beyond. Our result highlighted the possibility of identifying pulsars, especially extreme pulsars, from radio continuum images. Observations of the extragalactic ($z=0.0141$) transient AT2018cow established a new class of energetic explosions shocking a dense medium, which produce luminous emission at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths. Here we present detailed millimeter- through centimeter-wave observations of a similar transient, ZTF20acigmel (AT2020xnd) at $z=0.2433$. Using observations from the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array and the Very Large Array, we model the unusual millimeter and radio emission from AT2020xnd under several different assumptions, and ultimately favor synchrotron radiation from a thermal electron population (relativistic Maxwellian). The thermal-electron model implies a fast but sub-relativistic ($v\approx0.3c$) shock and a high ambient density ($n_e\approx4\times10^{3}$cm$^{-3}$ at $\Delta t\approx40$ days). The X-ray luminosity of $L_X\approx10^{43}$ erg sec$^{-1}$ exceeds simple predictions from the radio and UVOIR luminosity and likely has a separate physical origin, such as a central engine. Using the fact that month-long luminous ($L_\nu\approx 2\times10^{30}$ erg sec$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ at 100 GHz) millimeter emission appears to be a generic feature of transients with fast ($t_{1/2}\approx3$ days) and luminous ($M_\mathrm{peak}\approx -21 $mag) optical light curves, we estimate the rate at which transients like AT2018cow and AT2020xnd will be detected by future wide-field millimeter transient surveys such as CMB-S4, and conclude that energetic explosions in dense environments may represent a significant population of extragalactic transients in the 100 GHz sky., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures. We present XMM-Newton X-ray observations of nine confirmed lensed quasars at $1 \lesssim z \lesssim 3$ identified by the Gaia Gravitational Lens program. Eight systems are strongly detected, with 0.3--8.0 keV fluxes $F_{0.3-8.0} \gtrsim 5 \times 10^{-14}\ {\rm erg}\ {\rm cm}^{-2}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$. Modeling the X-ray spectra with an absorbed power law, we derive power law photon indices and 2--10 keV luminosities for the eight detected quasars. In addition to presenting sample properties for larger quasar population studies and for use in planning for future caustic crossing events, we also identify three quasars of interest: a quasar that shows evidence of flux variability from previous ROSAT observations, the most closely-separated individual lensed sources resolved by XMM-Newton, and one of the X-ray brightest quasars known at $z>3$. We report the discovery of a highly-polarized, highly-variable, steep-spectrum radio source, ASKAP J173608.2-321635, located $\sim$4\,deg from the Galactic center in the Galactic plane. The source was detected six times between 2020 January and 2020 September as part of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder Variables and Slow Transients (ASKAP VAST) survey at 888\,MHz. It exhibited a high degree ($\sim 25$\%) of circular polarization when it was visible. We monitored the source with the MeerKAT telescope from 2020 November to 2021 February on a 2--4 week cadence. The source was not detected with MeerKAT before 2021 February 07 when it appeared and reached a peak flux density of 5.6\,mJy. The source was still highly circularly polarized, but also showed up to 80\% linear polarization, and then faded rapidly with a timescale of one day. The rotation measure of the source varied significantly, from $-11.8\pm0.8$\,rad\,m$^{-2}$ to $-64.0\pm1.5$\,rad\,m$^{-2}$, over three days. No X-ray counterpart was found in follow-up \textit{Swift} or \textit{Chandra} observations about a week after the first MeerKAT detection, with upper limits of $\sim 5.0\times10^{31}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$ (0.3--8\,keV, assuming a distance $\sim10$ kpc). No counterpart is seen in new or archival near-infrared observations down to $J=20.8$\,mag. We discuss possible identifications for ASKAP J173608.2-321635 including a low-mass star/substellar object with extremely low infrared luminosity, a pulsar with scatter-broadened pulses, a transient magnetar, or a Galactic Center Radio Transient: none of these fully explains the observations, which suggests that ASKAP J173608.2-321635 may represent part of a new class of objects being discovered through radio imaging surveys., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, Accepted by ApJ

The Variables and Slow Transients Survey (VAST) on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is designed to detect highly variable and transient radio sources on timescales from 5 seconds to $\sim 5$ years. In this paper, we present the survey description, observation strategy and initial results from the VAST Phase I Pilot Survey. This pilot survey consists of $\sim 162$ hours of observations conducted at a central frequency of 888~MHz between 2019 August and 2020 August, with a typical rms sensitivity of 0.24~mJy~beam$^{-1}$ and angular resolution of $12-20$ arcseconds. There are 113 fields, \red{each of which was observed for 12 minutes integration time}, with between 5 and 13 repeats, with cadences between 1 day and 8 months. The total area of the pilot survey footprint is 5\,131 square degrees, covering six distinct regions of the sky. An initial search of two of these regions, totalling 1\,646 square degrees, revealed 28 highly variable and/or transient sources. Seven of these are known pulsars, including the millisecond pulsar J2039--5617. Another seven are stars, four of which have no previously reported radio detection (SCR~J0533--4257, LEHPM~2-783, UCAC3~89--412162 and 2MASS J22414436--6119311). Of the remaining 14 sources, two are active galactic nuclei, six are associated with galaxies and the other six have no multiwavelength counterparts and are yet to be identified.

The detection of gravitational waves from a neutron star merger, GW170817, marked the dawn of a new era in time-domain astronomy. Monitoring of the radio emission produced by the merger, including high-resolution radio imaging, enabled measurements of merger properties including the energetics and inclination angle. In this work we compare the capabilities of current and future gravitational wave facilities to the sensitivity of radio facilities to quantify the prospects for detecting the radio afterglows of gravitational wave events. We consider three observing strategies to identify future mergers -- widefield follow-up, targeting galaxies within the merger localisation and deep monitoring of known counterparts. We find that while planned radio facilities like the Square Kilometre Array will be capable of detecting mergers at gigaparsec distances, no facilities are sufficiently sensitive to detect mergers at the range of proposed third-generation gravitational wave detectors that would operate starting in the 2030s.

We present a search for extragalactic fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) during Phase I of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). We identify 38 candidates with durations above half-maximum light 1 d < t1/2 < 12 d, of which 28 have blue (g-r<-0.2 mag) colors at peak light. Of the 38 transients (28 FBOTs), 19 (13) can be spectroscopically classified as core-collapse supernovae (SNe): 11 (8) H- or He-rich (Type II/IIb/Ib) SNe, 6 (4) interacting (Type IIn/Ibn) SNe, and 2 (1) H&He-poor (Type Ic/Ic-BL) SNe. Two FBOTs (published previously) had high-S/N predominantly featureless spectra and luminous radio emission: AT2018lug and AT2020xnd. Seven (five) did not have a definitive classification: AT 2020bdh showed tentative broad H$\alpha$ in emission, and AT 2020bot showed unidentified broad features and was 10 kpc offset from the center of an early-type galaxy. Ten (six) have no spectroscopic observations or redshift measurements. We present multiwavelength (radio, millimeter, and/or X-ray) observations for five FBOTs (three Type Ibn, one Type IIn/Ibn, one Type IIb). Additionally, we search radio-survey (VLA and ASKAP) data to set limits on the presence of radio emission for 22 of the transients. All X-ray and radio observations resulted in non-detections; we rule out AT2018cow-like X-ray and radio behavior for five FBOTs and more luminous emission (such as that seen in the Camel) for four additional FBOTs. We conclude that exotic transients similar to AT2018cow, the Koala, and the Camel represent a rare subset of FBOTs, and use ZTF's SN classification experiments to measure the rate to be at most 0.1% of the local core-collapse SN rate., Comment: Replaced following peer-review process. 46 pages, 20 figures. We present a search for radio afterglows from long gamma-ray bursts using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Our search used the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey, covering the entire celestial sphere south of declination $+41^\circ$, and three epochs of the Variables and Slow Transients Pilot Survey (Phase 1), covering $\sim 5,000$ square degrees per epoch. The observations we used from these surveys spanned a nine-month period from 2019 April 21 to 2020 January 11. We crossmatched radio sources found in these surveys with 779 well-localised (to $\leq 15''$) long gamma-ray bursts occurring after 2004 and determined whether the associations were more likely afterglow- or host-related through the analysis of optical images. In our search, we detected one radio afterglow candidate associated with GRB 171205A, a local low-luminosity gamma-ray burst with a supernova counterpart SN 2017iuk, in an ASKAP observation 511 days post-burst. We confirmed this detection with further observations of the radio afterglow using the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 859 days and 884 days post-burst. Combining this data with archival data from early-time radio observations, we showed the evolution of the radio spectral energy distribution alone could reveal clear signatures of a wind-like circumburst medium for the burst. Finally, we derived semi-analytical estimates for the microphysical shock parameters of the burst: electron power-law index $p = 2.84$, normalised wind-density parameter $A_* = 3$, fractional energy in electrons $\epsilon_{e} = 0.3$, and fractional energy in magnetic fields $\epsilon_{B} = 0.0002$., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We discuss observational strategies to detect prompt bursts associated with gravitational wave events using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Many theoretical models of binary neutron stars mergers predict that bright, prompt radio emission would accompany the merger. The detection of such prompt emission would greatly improve our knowledge of the physical conditions, environment, and location of the merger. However, searches for prompt emission are complicated by the relatively poor localisation for gravitational wave events, with the 90\% credible region reaching hundreds or even thousands of square degrees. Operating in fly's eye mode, the ASKAP field of view can reach $\sim$1000 deg$^2$ at $\sim 888\,{\rm MHz}$. This potentially allows observers to cover most of the 90\% credible region quickly enough to detect prompt emission. We use skymaps for GW170817 and GW190814 from LIGO/Virgo's third observing run to simulate the probability of detecting prompt emission for gravitational wave events in the upcoming fourth observing run. With only alerts released after merger we find it difficult to slew the telescope sufficiently quickly as to capture any prompt emission. However, with the addition of alerts released \textit{before} merger by negative-latency pipelines we find that it should be possible to search for nearby, bright prompt FRB-like emission from gravitational wave events. Nonetheless, the rates are low: we would expect to observe $\sim$0.012 events during the fourth observing run, assuming that the prompt emission is emitted microseconds around the merger, Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We report the discovery and panchromatic followup observations of the young Type Ic supernova, SN2020oi, in M100, a grand design spiral galaxy at a mere distance of $14$ Mpc. We followed up with observations at radio, X-ray and optical wavelengths from only a few days to several months after explosion. The optical behaviour of the supernova is similar to those of other normal Type Ic supernovae. The event was not detected in the X-ray band but our radio observation revealed a bright mJy source ($L_{\nu} \approx 1.2 \times 10^{27} {\rm erg\,s}^{-1} {\rm Hz}^{-1}$). Given, the relatively small number of stripped envelope SNe for which radio emission is detectable, we used this opportunity to perform a detailed analysis of the comprehensive radio dataset we obtained. The radio emitting electrons initially experience a phase of inverse Compton cooling which leads to steepening of the spectral index of the radio emission. Our analysis of the cooling frequency points to a large deviation from equipartition at the level of $\epsilon_e/\epsilon_B \gtrsim 200$, similar to a few other cases of stripped envelope SNe. Our modeling of the radio data suggests that the shockwave driven by the SN ejecta into the circumstellar matter (CSM) is moving at $\sim 3\times 10^{4}\,{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$. Assuming a constant mass-loss from the stellar progenitor, we find that the mass-loss rate is $\dot{M} \approx 1.4\times 10^{-4}\,{M}_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$, for an assumed wind velocity of $1000\,{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$. We present a systematic search for optical counterparts to 13 gravitational wave (GW) triggers involving at least one neutron star during LIGO/Virgo's third observing run. We searched binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star black hole (NSBH) merger localizations with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and undertook follow-up with the Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) collaboration. The GW triggers had a median localization of 4480 deg^2, median distance of 267 Mpc and false alarm rates ranging from 1.5 to 1e-25 per yr. The ZTF coverage had a median enclosed probability of 39%, median depth of 20.8mag, and median response time of 1.5 hr. The O3 follow-up by the GROWTH team comprised 340 UVOIR photometric points, 64 OIR spectra, and 3 radio. We find no promising kilonova (radioactivity-powered counterpart) and we convert the upper limits to constrain the underlying kilonova luminosity function. Assuming that all kilonovae are at least as luminous as GW170817 at discovery (-16.1mag), we calculate our joint probability of detecting zero kilonovae is only 4.2%. If we assume that all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6mag (extrapolated peak magnitude of GW170817) and fade at 1 mag/day (similar to GW170817), the joint probability of zero detections is 7%. If we separate the NSBH and BNS populations, the joint probability of zero detections, assuming all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6mag, is 9.7% for NSBH and 7.9% for BNS mergers. Moreover, <57% (<89%) of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6mag assuming flat (fading) evolution, at 90% confidence. If we further account for the online terrestrial probability for each GW trigger, we find that <68% of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6mag. Comparing to model grids, we find that some kilonovae must have Mej < 0.03 Msun or Xlan>1e-4 or phi>30deg to be consistent with our limits. (Abridged), Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We present the full panchromatic afterglow light curve data of GW170817, including new radio data as well as archival optical and X-ray data, between 0.5 and 940 days post-merger. By compiling all archival data, and reprocessing a subset of it, we have evaluated the impact of differences in data processing or flux determination methods used by different groups, and attempted to mitigate these differences to provide a more uniform dataset. Simple power-law fits to the uniform afterglow light curve indicate a $t^{0.86\pm0.04}$ rise, a $t^{-1.92\pm0.12}$ decline, and a peak occurring at $155\pm4$ days. The afterglow is optically thin throughout its evolution, consistent with a single spectral index ($-0.584\pm0.002$) across all epochs. This gives a precise and updated estimate of the electron power-law index, $p=2.168\pm0.004$. By studying the diffuse X-ray emission from the host galaxy, we place a conservative upper limit on the hot ionized ISM density, $<$0.01 cm$^{-3}$, consistent with previous afterglow studies. Using the late-time afterglow data we rule out any long-lived neutron star remnant having magnetic field strength between 10$^{10.4}$ G and 10$^{16}$ G. Our fits to the afterglow data using an analytical model that includes VLBI proper motion from Mooley et al. (2018), and a structured jet model that ignores the proper motion, indicates that the proper motion measurement needs to be considered while seeking an accurate estimate of the viewing angle., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. The jet opening angle and inclination of GW170817 -- the first detected binary neutron star merger -- were vital to understand its energetics, relation to short gamma-ray bursts, and refinement of the standard siren-based determination of the Hubble constant, $H_0$. These basic quantities were determined through a combination of the radio lightcurve and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) measurements of proper motion. In this paper we discuss and quantify the prospects for the use of radio VLBI observations and observations of scintillation-induced variability to measure the source size and proper motion of merger afterglows, and thereby infer properties of the merger including inclination angle, opening angle and energetics. We show that these techniques are complementary as they probe different parts of the circum-merger density/inclination angle parameter space and different periods of the temporal evolution of the afterglow. We also find that while VLBI observations will be limited to the very closest events it will be possible to detect scintillation for a large fraction of events beyond the range of current gravitational wave detectors. Scintillation will also be detectable with next generation telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array, 2000 antenna Deep Synoptic Array and the next generation Very Large Array, for a large fraction of events detected with third generation gravitational wave detectors. Finally, we discuss prospects for the measurement of the $H_0$ with VLBI observations of neutron star mergers and compare this technique to other standard siren methods.

On 2019 August 14, the Advanced LIGO and Virgo interferometers detected the high-significance gravitational wave (GW) signal S190814bv. The GW data indicated that the event resulted from a neutron star--black hole (NSBH) merger, or potentially a low-mass binary black hole merger. Due to the low false alarm rate and the precise localization (23 deg$^2$ at 90\%), S190814bv presented the community with the best opportunity yet to directly observe an optical/near-infrared counterpart to a NSBH merger. To search for potential counterparts, the GROWTH collaboration performed real-time image subtraction on 6 nights of public Dark Energy Camera (DECam) images acquired in the three weeks following the merger, covering $>$98\% of the localization probability. Using a worldwide network of follow-up facilities, we systematically undertook spectroscopy and imaging of optical counterpart candidates. Combining these data with a photometric redshift catalog, we ruled out each candidate as the counterpart to S190814bv and we placed deep, uniform limits on the optical emission associated with S190814bv. For the nearest consistent GW distance, radiative transfer simulations of NSBH mergers constrain the ejecta mass of S190814bv to be $M_\mathrm{ej} < 0.04$~$M_{\odot}$ at polar viewing angles, or $M_\mathrm{ej} < 0.03$~$M_{\odot}$ if the opacity is $\kappa < 2$~cm$^2$g$^{-1}$. Assuming a tidal deformability for the neutron star at the high end of the range compatible with GW170817 results, our limits would constrain the BH spin component aligned with the orbital momentum to be $ \chi < 0.7$ for mass ratios $Q < 6$, with weaker constraints for more compact neutron stars. We present results from a search for a radio transient associated with the LIGO/Virgo source S190814bv, a likely neutron star-black hole (NSBH) merger, with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. We imaged a $30\,{\rm deg}^2$ field at $\Delta T$=2, 9 and 33 days post-merger at a frequency of 944\,MHz, comparing them to reference images from the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey observed 110 days prior to the event. Each epoch of our observations covers $89\%$ of the LIGO/Virgo localisation region. We conducted an untargeted search for radio transients in this field, resulting in 21 candidates. For one of these, \object[AT2019osy]{AT2019osy}, we performed multi-wavelength follow-up and ultimately ruled out the association with S190814bv. All other candidates are likely unrelated variables, but we cannot conclusively rule them out. We discuss our results in the context of model predictions for radio emission from neutron star-black hole mergers and place constrains on the circum-merger density and inclination angle of the merger. This survey is simultaneously the first large-scale radio follow-up of an NSBH merger, and the most sensitive widefield radio transients search to-date.

We identified a highly-polarized, steep-spectrum radio source in a deep image with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope at 888 MHz. After considering and rejecting a stellar origin for this source, we discovered a new millisecond pulsar (MSP) using observations from the Parkes radio telescope. This pulsar has period 2.77 ms and dispersion measure 228.27 pc/cm**3. Although this pulsar does not yet appear to be particularly remarkable, the short spin period, wide profile and high dispersion measure do make it relatively hard to discover through traditional blind periodicity searches. Over the course of several weeks we see changes in the barycentric period of this pulsar that are consistent with orbital motion in a binary system, but the properties of any binary need to be confirmed by further observations. While even a deep ASKAP survey may not identify large numbers of new MSPs compared to the existing population, it would be competitive with existing all-sky surveys and could discover interesting new MSPs at high Galactic latitude without the need for computationally-expensive all-sky periodicity searches., Comment: ApJ, in press

We revisit the K -band period-luminosity (P-L) relations of Galactic red supergiants using Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes and up to 70 yr of photometry from AAVSO and ASAS campaigns. In addition, we examine 206 LMC red supergiants using 50 yr of photometric data from the Digitised Harvard Astronomical Plate Collection. We identified periods by computing power spectra and calculated the period-luminosity relations of our samples and compared them with the literature. Newly available data tighten the P-L relations substantially. Identified periods form two groups: one with periods of 300-1000 days, corresponding to pulsations, and another with Long Secondary Periods between 1000 and 8000 days. Among the 48 Galactic objects we find shorter periods in 25 stars and long secondary periods in 23 stars. In the LMC sample we identify 85 and 94 red supergiants with shorter and long secondary periods, respectively. The P-L relation of the Galactic red supergiants is in agreement with the red supergiants in both, the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Andromeda Galaxy. We present detailed submillimeter- through centimeter-wave observations of the extraordinary extragalactic transient AT2018cow. The apparent characteristics -- the high radio luminosity, the long-lived emission plateau at millimeter bands, and the sub-relativistic velocity -- have no precedent. A basic interpretation of the data suggests $E_k \gtrsim 10^{48}$ erg coupled to a fast but sub-relativistic ($v \approx 0.13c$) shock in a dense ($n_e \approx 3 \times 10^{5}\,$cm$^{-3}$) medium. We find that the X-ray emission is not naturally explained by an extension of the radio-submm synchrotron spectrum, nor by inverse Compton scattering of the dominant blackbody UVOIR photons by energetic electrons within the forward shock. By $\Delta t \approx20\,$days, the X-ray emission shows spectral softening and erratic inter-day variability. Taken together, we are led to invoke an additional source of X-ray emission: the central engine of the event. We present 2-9 GHz radio observations of GW170817 covering the period 125-200 days post-merger, taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. Our observations demonstrate that the radio afterglow peaked at $149\pm2$ days post-merger and is now declining in flux density. We see no evidence for evolution in the radio-only spectral index, which remains consistent with optically-thin synchrotron emission connecting the radio, optical, and X-ray regimes. The peak implies a total energy in the synchrotron-emitting component of a ${\rm few}\times 10^{50}\,$erg. The temporal decay rate is most consistent with mildly- or non-relativistic material and we do not see evidence for a very energetic off-axis jet, but we cannot distinguish between a lower-energy jet and more isotropic emission.

We present low-frequency spectral energy distributions of 60 known radio pulsars observed with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope. We searched the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) survey images for 200-MHz continuum radio emission at the position of all pulsars in the ATNF pulsar catalogue. For the 60 confirmed detections we have measured flux densities in 20 x 8 MHz bands between 72 and 231 MHz. We compare our results to existing measurements and show that the MWA flux densities are in good agreement., Comment: 20 pages. Accepted for publication in PASA
