The general information, glucose and lipid metabolism indicators, and uric acid levels of all patients were compiled for data analysis.Results: (1) Hb, HGB concentration in mean red blood cells and RDW in PCOS patients were higher than those in non-PCOS patients, and MCV was lower than that in non-PCOS patients (P < 0.05); (2) Compared with Group A, patients in Group B had higher BMI, Hb, 2-hPG, FINS, 2-hINS, HOMA-IR, LDL-C, and uric acid levels while the QUICKI was lower; in Group C, the age, FSH, HDL-C, and LDL-C were higher, and AMH, BMI, T, TG, and uric acid level were lower (P< 0.05); compared with Group D, AMH, BMI, FINS, HOMA-IR, TG, uric acid level increased, while age, FSH, and QUICKI decreased in Group B; and Hb and T decreased in Group C (P< 0.05); (3) Pearson’s correlation analysis indicated that Hb in PCOS patients was positively correlated with BMI, FPG, 2-hPG, FINS, 2-hINS, and HOMA-IR, and negatively correlated with the QUICKI (P< 0.05); (4) Multi-factor logistic regression analysis suggested that the high Hb level in PCOS patients was an independent risk factor of IR (P< 0.05).Conclusion: Hb level in patients with PCOS was associated with BMI and glucose metabolism indicators; a high Hb level may be an independent risk factor for IR.Keywords: hemoglobin, insulin resistance, metabolic disorder, polycystic ovary syndrome

The patients’ general data, along with blood glucose, blood lipid, insulin, and sex hormone levels and other data, were collected. The TNF-α levels in the patients’ serum and uterine fluid were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Results: Compared with the patients in the control group, the body mass index (BMI), anti-Müllerian hormone, luteinizing hormone, testosterone (T), fasting insulin (FINS), homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) of patients with PCOS were higher, and high-density lipoprotein was lower (P < 0.05). The TNF-α levels in the serum and uterine fluid of patients with PCOS were higher than those in the control group (P < 0.01), and the TNF-α levels in the uterine fluid of these patients was significantly correlated with BMI, T, FINS, HOMA-IR, serum TNF-α, TG, and LDL (P < 0.05).Conclusion: There is local inflammation in the uterine cavity of patients with PCOS, and the detection of cytokines in uterine secretions may be a simple and feasible method of understanding the uterine microenvironment of patients with PCOS.Keywords: polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine fluid, TNF-α, insulin resistance, lipid metabolism

Plankton are fundamental to aquatic ecosystems, forming the base of the marine food web and playing a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. While the impact of environmental factors on marine plankton ecosystems has been widely studied, the seasonal variability in plankton diversity has received comparatively less attention. Here, we investigated the complexity and distribution of plankton species in Korean coastal waters in relation to seasonal environmental changes, particularly those linked to water mass characteristics and the presence of a thermocline, using alpha and beta diversity indices. A thermocline was observed at all stations in July, coinciding with the lowest diversity and richness, but was absent in September, when diversity indices peaked. In the upper layer above the thermocline, diatom species such as Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima and Skeletonema costatum were dominant. Analysis of the Shannon index suggested that planktonic ecosystems in the South Sea of Korea from May to September 2021 were well-balanced. A facile one-pot synthetic method has been developed for constructing 6- oxa -spiro[4.5]decane skeletons by merging the ring-opening of benzo[ c ]oxepines and formal 1,2-oxygen migration reactions. More than 30 examples of the 6- oxa -spiro[4.5]decane derivatives have been synthesized under transition-metal-free conditions.

Background: The pathologic feature of lung adenocarcinoma is extremely complex because the prognosis of same-stage lung adenocarcinoma significantly differs because of pathological diversity. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical association between histologic subtype and recurrence. Further, the prognostic significance of histologic subtype in stage I lung adenocarcinoma was examined., Methods: The medical records of 752 patients with pathological stage I lung adenocarcinoma were reviewed. The size of each histologic subtype was assessed. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to identify the prognostic significance of histologic subtype. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to validate the prognostic role of recurrence indicator., Results: The median age of the participants was 64 years, and female patients were predominant. The acinar-predominant subtype (44.7%) was the most common. According to each subtype size for predicting recurrence, >1 cm size of acinar subtype showed significant difference and the only presence of micropapillary and solid subtype themselves showed significant difference. As the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for recurrence, an acinar subtype size of >1 cm, or the presence of the micropapillary or solid subtypes was 0.710 (P<0.001). This variable was significant for recurrence in the multivariate analysis (P<0.001)., Conclusions: The presence of micropapillary, solid subtype or an acinar size of >1 cm are an independent prognostic factor of stage I lung adenocarcinoma. A more sizable acinar subtype affects the prognosis of stage I lung adenocarcinoma. Prorocentrin-5 ( 1 ) was isolated from the benthic marine dinoflagellate Prorocentrum lima . A combination of NMR spectroscopy, quantum chemical calculations, and chemical reactions was then employed to elucidate its molecular structure, including the configurations of all stereogenic centers. In cytotoxicity assays, prorocentin-5 exhibited potent activity against the HCT-116 and Neuro2a cell lines, with IC 50 values of 4.4 and 2.8 μM, respectively. Furthermore, 1 increased the apoptotic cell population and induced cell cycle arrest, leading to the accumulation of cells in the S or G2/M phase and an accompanying decrease in the G0/G1 phase in HCT-116, Neuro2a, and HepG2 cells.

A three-component annulation reaction and trifluoromethylation for the construction of 3-(trifluoromethyl)-4 H -pyrans using β-CF 3 -1,3-enynes, BrCF 2 CO 2 Et, and sulfoxonium ylides as readily available substrates has been developed. This metal-free process involves two C-F bond cleavages of β-CF 3 -1,3-enynes and a CF 3 group generated in situ from BrCF 2 CO 2 Et. This method is applicable to the late-stage modification of pharmaceutically active molecules.

Although microalgae typically serve as prey for jellyfish ephyrae in marine food webs, this study investigated the potential of harmful microalgae to produce detrimental effects on the moon jellyfish Aurelia aurita. Understanding the biological interactions between Aurelia and microalgal species is crucial, particularly considering their common co-occurrence in coastal waters worldwide. We examined the effects of 11 protist strains, comprising seven species of harmful microalgae and two non-toxic microalgae, on A. aurita ephyrae. The rhythmic pulsation behavior of A. aurita was significantly suppressed when exposed to the raphidophytes Heterosigma akashiwo and Chattonella marina var. ovata and the dinoflagellates Amphidinium carterae, Coolia canariensis, and Pfiesteria piscicida. Notably, the media filtrates of all H. akashiwo strains and C. marina var. ovata killed ephyrae, implying a possible extracellular release of chemicals. Marine dinoflagellate species in the genus Alexandrium are well known to produce paralytic shellfish poison as well as common coastal species with cosmopolitan distribution. However, few studies on the feeding of copepods on Alexandrium species have been conducted. The toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax contains goniodomin A and causes red tides in many countries. To investigate the relationship between the toxic dinoflagellate A. pseudogonyaulax and the calanoid copepods Acartia spp., we quantified the ingestion rates of Acartia spp. feeding on A. pseudogonyaulax as a function of prey concentration. Additionally, we estimated grazing coefficients by integrating data from field observations of Acartia spp. and coexisting A. pseudogonyaulax with laboratory measurements of ingestion rates obtained during this investigation. Furthermore, we compared the ingestion rates of Acartia spp. and other predators feeding on Alexandrium species as previously reported. The ingestion rates of Acartia spp. on A. pseudogonyaulax increased continuously with increasing mean prey concentration. The highest values among the ingestion rate of Acartia spp. feeding on A . pseudogonyaulax was 3,407 cells predator -1 d -1 (4,872 ng C predator -1 d -1 ) at the given prey concentration. The calculated grazing coefficients for Acartia spp. on A. pseudogonyaulax in Shiwha Bay, Korea, were up to 0.073 d -1 . The emerging evidence of human infections with emerging viruses suggests their potential public health importance. A novel taxon of viruses named Statoviruses (for stool-associated Tombus-like viruses) was recently identified in the gastrointestinal tracts of multiple mammals. Here we report the discovery of respiratory Statovirus-like viruses (provisionally named Restviruses) from the respiratory tracts of five patients experiencing acute respiratory disease with Human coronavirus OC43 infection through the retrospective analysis of meta-transcriptomic data. Restviruses shared 53.1%-98.8% identities of genomic sequences with each other and 39.9%-44.3% identities with Statoviruses. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that Restviruses together with a Stato-like virus from nasal-throat swabs of Vietnamese patients with acute respiratory disease, formed a well-supported clade distinct from the taxon of Statoviruses. However, the consistent genome characteristics of Restviruses and Statoviruses suggested that they might share similar evolutionary trajectories. Background: Haemaphysalis longicornis is drawing attentions for its geographic invasion, extending population, and emerging disease threat. However, there are still substantial gaps in our knowledge of viral composition in relation to genetic diversity of H. longicornis and ecological factors, which are important for us to understand interactions between virus and vector, as well as between vector and ecological elements., Results: We conducted the meta-transcriptomic sequencing of 136 pools of H. longicornis and identified 508 RNA viruses of 48 viral species, 22 of which have never been reported. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrion sequences divided the ticks into two genetic clades, each of which was geographically clustered and significantly associated with ecological factors, including altitude, precipitation, and normalized difference vegetation index. The two clades showed significant difference in virome diversity and shared about one fifth number of viral species that might have evolved to "generalists." Notably, Bandavirus dabieense, the pathogen of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome was only detected in ticks of clade 1, and half number of clade 2-specific viruses were aquatic-animal-associated., Conclusions: These findings highlight that the virome diversity is shaped by internal genetic evolution and external ecological landscape of H. longicornis and provide the new foundation for promoting the studies on virus-vector-ecology interaction and eventually for evaluating the risk of H. longicornis for transmitting the viruses to humans and animals. To understand environmental effects affecting paralytic shellfish toxin production of Centrodinium punctatum, this study examined the growth responses, and toxin contents and profiles of a C. punctatum culture exposed to drastic changes of temperature (5-30 °C) and salinity (15-40). C. punctatum grew over a temperature range of 15-25 °C, with an optimum of 20 °C., and over a salinity range of 25-40, with optimum salinities of 30-35. This suggests that C. punctatum prefers relatively warm waters and an oceanic habitat for its growth and can adapt to significant changes of salinity levels. When C. punctatum was cultivated at different temperature and salinity levels, the PST profile included four major analogs (STX, neoSTX, GTX1 and GTX4, constituted >80 % of the profile), while low amounts of doSTX and traces of dc-STX and dc-GTX2 were also observed. Interestingly, though overall toxin contents did not change significantly with temperature, increases in the proportion of STX, and decreases in proportions in GTX1 and GTX4 were observed with higher temperatures. Salinity did not affect either toxin contents or profile from 25 to 35. Total annual net primary productions in marine and terrestrial ecosystems are similar. However, a large portion of the newly produced marine phytoplankton biomass is converted to carbon dioxide because of predation. Which food web structure retains high carbon biomass in the plankton community in the global ocean? In 6954 individual samples or locations containing phytoplankton, unicellular protozooplankton, and multicellular metazooplankton in the global ocean, phytoplankton-dominated bottom-heavy pyramids held higher carbon biomass than protozooplankton-dominated middle-heavy diamonds or metazooplankton-dominated top-heavy inverted pyramids. Bottom-heavy pyramids predominated, but the high predation impact by protozooplankton on phytoplankton or the vertical migration of metazooplankton temporarily changed bottom-heavy pyramids to middle-heavy diamonds or top-heavy inverted pyramids but returned to bottom-heavy pyramids shortly. This finding has profound implications for carbon retention by plankton communities in the global ocean.

The current investigation presents an innovative palladium-catalyzed asymmetric carbonylative Heck esterification method. This approach facilitates the efficient synthesis of various chiral γ-ketoacid esters by utilizing o -alkenyliodobenzenes and arylboronic acids as primary substrates. This reaction achieves the creation of three carbon-carbon bonds, two carbon-oxygen bonds, and the establishment of a quaternary carbon center within a single step. The α-chiral γ-ketoacid esters were obtained in yields ranging from good to high yields, displaying enantiomeric excesses (ee's) levels up to 92% under mild reaction conditions.

Background: Predicting prognosis is complex due to a unique characteristic in stage IA lung adenocarcinoma. The feature indicated heterogeneous histologic subtype and ground glass opacity (GGO). Many studies demonstrated different prognoses according to histologic subtype or non-GGO lesion. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes following each histologic subtype size in stage IA lung adenocarcinoma and identify the prognostic impact of each histologic subtype size., Methods: The medical records of 550 patients with pathological stage IA lung adenocarcinoma were reviewed. Histologic subtype size was estimated by multiplying the tumor's maximum diameter by the proportion of each histologic subtype. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to identify the prognostic role of each histologic subtype size in stage IA lung adenocarcinoma., Results: The median age and tumor size were 63 [25-82] years and 1.8 [0.3-3] cm, respectively. Acinar (42.0%) and lepidic (44.4%) were the most common among the predominant subtype. Each subtype size was estimated and re-categorized following the current staging system. The disease-free interval (DFI) was significantly different following each histologic subtype size. Multivariate analysis for DFI revealed more acinar, micropapillary, and solid subtypes and fewer lepidic subtypes with worse prognoses., Conclusions: The prognosis for DFI is determined through a complex process by various variables in stage IA lung adenocarcinoma. There has been increasing global concern about the spillover transmission of pangolin-associated microbes. To assess the risk of these microbes for emergence as human pathogens, we integrated data from multiple sources to describe the distribution and spectrum of microbes harbored by pangolins. Wild and trafficked pangolins have been mainly recorded in Asia and Africa, while captive pangolins have been reported in European and North American countries. A total of 128 microbes, including 92 viruses, 25 bacteria, eight protists, and three uncharacterized microbes, have been identified in five pangolin species. Out of 128 pangolin-associated microbes, 31 (including 13 viruses, 15 bacteria, and three protists) have been reported in humans, and 54 are animal-associated viruses. The phylogenetic analysis of human-associated viruses carried by pangolins reveals that they are genetically close to those naturally circulating among human populations in the world. Pangolins harbor diverse microbes, many of which have been previously reported in humans and animals. Aliphatic trifluoromethyl ketones are a type of unique fluorine-containing subunit which play a significant role in altering the physical and biological properties of molecules. Catalytic methods to provide direct access to aliphatic trifluoromethyl ketones are highly desirable yet remain underdeveloped, partially owing to the high reactivity and instability of trifluoroacetyl radical. Herein, we report a photocatalytic synthesis of trifluoromethyl ketones from alkyl bromides with trifluoroacetic anhydride. The reaction features dual visible-light and halogen-atom-transfer catalysis, followed by an enabling radical-radical cross-coupling of an alkyl radical with a stabilized trifluoromethyl radical. Six-membered N-containing heterocycles, such as 2-piperidinone derivatives, with diverse substitution patterns are widespread in natural products, drug molecules and serve as key precursors for piperidines. Thus, the development of stereoselective synthesis of multi-substituted 2-piperidinones are attractive. However, existing methods heavily rely on modification of pre-synthesized backbones which require tedious multi-step procedure and suffer from limited substitution patterns. Herein, an organophotocatalysed [1 + 2 + 3] strategy was developed to enable the one-step access to diverse substituted 2-piperidinones from easily available inorganic ammonium salts, alkenes, and unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Polygonatum odoratum is appreciated for its edible and medicinal benefits especially for lung protection. However, the contained active components have been understudied, and further research is required to fully exploit its potential application. We aimed to probe into the beneficial effects of Polygonatum odoratum polysaccharide (POP) in lipopolysaccharide-induced lung inflammatory injury mice. POP treatment could ameliorate the survival rate, pulmonary function, lung pathological lesions, and immune inflammatory response. POP treatment could repair intestinal barrier, and modulate the composition of gut microbiota, especially reducing the abundance of Klebsiella , which were closely associated with the therapeutic effects of POP. Investigation of the underlying anti-inflammatory mechanism showed that POP suppressed the generation of pro-inflammatory molecules in lung by inhibiting iNOS + M1 macrophages. Background: Childhood trauma has a significant impact on the development of adolescents, which may lead to interpersonal and psychological problems. Determining the incidence and consequences of childhood trauma in psychiatric clinical practice is of great significance., Methods: A survey was conducted among adolescents with mood disorders. Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Adolescent Non-Suicidal-Self-Injury Behavior Function Assessment Scale (ANBFAS) and a series of psychological scales were filled face to face. Path analysis was used to examine the causation structure of childhood trauma-related symptoms., Results: A total of 117 participants (74.5%) had experienced at least one type of trauma. Interpersonal and psychological features of adolescent patients with childhood trauma were detailed in this study. The path analysis model showed that the relationships between childhood trauma and NSSI were mediated by depressive symptoms and thinking disorders, respectively, whereas depressive symptoms individually mediated the correlation between childhood trauma and sleep disturbances in adolescent patients with psychiatric disorders (χ 2 /df = 1.23)., Conclusion: For adolescent patients with childhood trauma, psychological counseling for interpersonal relationships should start with families and peers. To better understand the role of resting cysts in the outbreak of paralytic shellfish poisoning and bloom dynamics in Jinhae-Masan Bay, Korea, this study investigated the germination features of ellipsoidal Alexandrium cysts isolated from sediments collected in winter and summer under different combinations of temperature and salinity. Morphology and phylogeny of germling cells revealed that the ellipsoidal Alexandrium cysts belong to Alexandrium catenella (Group I). The cysts could germinate across a wide range of temperature (5-25 °C) with germination success within 5 days, indicating that continuous seeding for the maintenance of vegetative cells in the water column may occur through the year without an endogenous clock to regulate germination timing. In addition, the cyst germination of A. catenella (Group I) was not controlled by seasonal salinity changes. Activation and cleavage of carbon-carbon (C-C) bonds is a fundamental transformation in organic chemistry while inert C-C bonds cleavage remains a long-standing challenge. Retro-Diels-Alder (retro-DA) reaction is a well-known and important tool for C-C bonds cleavage but less been explored in methodology by contrast to other strategies. Herein, we report a selective C(alkyl)-C(vinyl) bond cleavage strategy realized through the transient directing group mediated retro-Diels-Alder reaction of a six-membered palladacycle, which is obtained from an in situ generated hydrazone and palladium hydride species. This unprecedented strategy exhibits good tolerances and thus offers new opportunities for late-stage modifications of complex molecules. DFT calculations revealed that an intriguing retro-Pd(IV)-Diels-Alder process is possibly involved in the catalytic cycle, thus bridging both Retro-Diels-Alder reaction and C-C bond cleavage. We anticipate that this strategy should prove instrumental for potential applications to achieve the modification of functional organic skeletons in synthetic chemistry and other fields involving in molecular editing., (© 2023. Long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) have special advantages in the detection of salt concentrations due to small volume, corrosion resistance and immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, it is very difficult to distinguish low-concentration salt solutions with usual LPFGs owing to the poor sensitivity. In this paper, the detection capability of the LPFG to low-concentration salt solutions was significantly improved by assembling salt-containing poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and salt-containing poly (sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS). Experimental results showed that, the responsive wavelength range of the LPFG was remarkably broadened in low-concentration salt solutions after assembling nanofilms. The suitable detection range of the PDDA/PSS films coated LPFG for salt concentrations was 0-3%. In such a range, the average refractive index sensitivity and the average salinity sensitivity of the LPFG was as high as 29545.9 nm/RIU and 52.2 nm/% respectively. Compared with the LPFG without nanofilms, the discrimination ability of the PDDA/PSS films coated LPFG to 0-3% salt solutions increased by 568 times. The analysis demonstrated that PDDA and salt in the assembly solutions played a pivotal role in the above effects. Background: Internet is gradually reshaping adolescents' behaviors in China. It is important to identify the prevalence and risk factors to predict Internet addiction among adolescent psychiatric patients., Methods: The survey was conducted among inpatient or outpatient adolescent patients with mental disorders. All participants were interviewed face-to-face and completed Young Internet Addiction Test and other relevant assessments. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to exam between-group differences of internet addiction., Result: The prevalence for internet addiction (mild to severe) in adolescent psychiatric patients was 80.2%, where the prevalence for "medium and severe internet addiction was 25.5%. Logistic regression analysis identified two independent predictors for "medium and severe internet addiction" including the total score of Adolescent Non-suicidal-self-injury (NSSI) Behavior Function Assessment Scale (ANBFAS) and the diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) (R 2 =0.27, p = .02 for total ANBFAS score, p = .01 for GAD) in psychiatric adolescent patients., Conclusion: The prevalence of internet addiction is notably high among adolescent psychiatric patients in China. Coping for Internet addiction in adolescent psychiatric patients should conclude the coping of NSSI and GAD.

The dinoflagellate family Suessiaceae comprises cosmopolitan species distributed across polar and tropical waters in both marine and freshwater ecosystems, encompassing free-living forms, symbionts, and parasites. Recently, species diversity within the family has rapidly expanded, now including a few species reported to cause red tides. Despite their ecological and evolutionary importance, classifying them within Suessiaceae is difficult due to the limitations of the existing molecular markers-the highly conserved small subunit ribosomal gene (SSU rDNA) and the presence of two indel regions of sequence fragments of the large subunit ribosomal gene (LSU rDNA)-resulting in poorly resolved phylogenetic relationships. We assessed mitochondrial cytochrome b (cob) and cytochrome c oxidase 1 (cox1) genes to develop robust molecular markers that can reveal the genetic diversity of the family Suessiaceae. The divergences of cob and cox1 sequences among the species in the family were greater than the SSU rDNA but less than the LSU rDNA and the ITS region. Moreover, the distinctive topology inferred from the mitochondrial genes provided high resolution among the suessiacean species. We examined the validity of the genetic markers using phylogenomics based on 2,023 core proteins. The divergence of the cob phylogeny was most consistent with that of the phylogenomic results. With the development of autonomous vehicles, activities in the indoor spaces of autonomous vehicles are diversifying. Therefore, as the operating range of the interior parts increases, the occupant becomes sensitive to the operating noise of autonomous vehicles. Therefore, to reduce operating noise, it is necessary to analyze the causal relationship between the mechanical/electrical noise characteristics of the motor and sound quality. In this paper, we propose a methodology to analyze the relationship between the noise frequency components and the sound quality of small motors used in automobile interior parts. Two types of motors were selected for this study, and noise measurements and analyses were performed by applying the design proposed in this study. Subjective sound quality evaluations were conducted using the 12 pairs of adjectives extracted from the survey. The results suggest that subjective sound quality evaluation scores should be converted to Z-scores to ensure the reliability of the statistical analysis. In addition, we present a critical sound quality value that can be used as a criterion for determining whether the sound quality is positive (good quality) or negative (bad quality). Sound quality regression models explain the causal relationship between rotational frequency components of the motor and subjective sound quality characteristics. Thus, a method for analyzing the effect of the rotational frequency component of the motor on the sound quality is presented, which suggests that it can be used as basic research data to improve the noise performance of the motor.

Background: The histological subtype has been introduced in invasive lung adenocarcinoma. The predominant micropapillary and solid subtypes are categorized as high-grade patterns and provide a worse prognosis. However, the prognostic analysis of high-grade patterns has not previously been fully investigated. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the prognostic role of high-grade patterns in pathological stage I lung adenocarcinoma., Methods: Patients with stage I lung adenocarcinoma and micropapillary or solid components were reviewed. Clinicopathological features and clinical course were compared in these subtypes, and prognostic factors were analyzed in high-grade patterns., Results: The patients were classified into five groups based on the presence of micropapillary or solid subtypes, namely, micropapillary predominant, solid predominant, both nonpredominant subtypes, only minor micropapillary subtype, and only minor solid subtype present. Disease-free interval was significantly different, and the micropapillary predominant group showed worse disease-free interval (p = 0.001). Contrastingly, the solid predominant group showed significantly worse overall survival among high-grade patterns (p = 0.035). The multivariate analysis revealed an association between smoking, micropapillary predominant, blood vessel invasion, and visceral pleural invasion with recurrence and more association between solid predominant and visceral pleural invasion with overall survival., Conclusions: Clinical results were different in stage I high-grade adenocarcinoma. The predominant micropapillary subtype is the independent prognostic factor for recurrence. However, the solid subtype is the significant factor for overall survival. Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has attracted more and more attention from schools, mental health workers and even the whole society in China. The aim of this study was to explore influencing factors and clinical characteristics of NSSI in adolescent psychiatric patients in China, and provide valuable information for the intervention and treatment of NSSI., Methods: The sample included 157 adolescents, 114 were female (72.6%), aged 12-18 years ( M = 15.39, SD = 1.81). Assessments were performed using Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form, the Revised Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire, the modified version of Adolescents Self-Harm Scale, Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, the Young Mania Rating Scale and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Clinical characteristics were collected from electronic medical record system., Results: Adolescent patients with NSSI experienced more adverse life events including peer bullying, childhood trauma and romantic relationship trouble. They had more times of hospitalization, higher dosage of psychotic medication, and more severe depressive symptoms., Conclusions: It is very necessary to evaluate negative life events, including childhood trauma, peer bullying etc., in adolescent patients with NSSI. It has important clinical implications for evaluating the risk factors of NSSI and giving effective intervention treatment. Three voratin compounds ( 1 - 3 ) were isolated from the symbiotic marine dinoflagellate Effrenium voratum . The planar structures of 1 - 3 were determined by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and HRESIMS, and the relative and absolute configurations were established using ROESY correlations, Mosher's method, and quantum calculations. All of the compounds are zwitterionic and contain a dihydroindolizinium ring and a spiroketal moiety. Compounds 1 - 3 were found to exhibit therapeutic effects against benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), as evaluated using testosterone propionate-treated LNCap and RWPE-1 human prostate cells. This excellent activity suggests that 1 - 3 are promising for the development of BPH treatments.

Ovataline ( 1 ), which is a polar metabolite containing a hexahydroquinoline moiety, was isolated from cultures of the marine dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata . 1 was characterized as a zwitterionic compound with hexahydroquinoline and tetrahydropyran rings. The configurations of the chiral centers in 1 were established using ROESY correlations, J- based configurational and Mosher reaction analyses, and density functional theory calculations. 1 exhibited a 78% (1 μM) inhibition of type II 5α-reductase in testosterone propionate-induced RWPE-1 human prostatic cells.

Direct alkylation of the C-H bond arenes in a selective manner is a long-standing challenge. Herein, a metal-free photocatalytic regioselective C-H alkylation method for electron-rich arenes with both activated and unactivated alkenes was developed. The reaction tolerates a wide range of aromatic rings with diverse substitution patterns, as well as terminal and internal alkenes, providing a general and straightforward metal-free method for C-C bond formation from inert C-H bonds. The Raphidophyceae is an ecologically important eukaryotic lineage of primary producers and predators that inhabit marine and freshwater environments worldwide. These organisms are of great evolutionary interest because their plastids are the product of eukaryote-eukaryote endosymbiosis. To obtain deeper insight into the evolutionary history of raphidophycean plastids, we sequenced and analyzed the plastid genomes of three freshwater and three marine species. Our comparison of these genomes, together with the previously reported plastid genome of Heterosigma akashiwo , revealed unexpected variability in genome structure. Unlike the genomes of other analyzed species, the plastid genome of Gonyostomum semen was found to contain only a single rRNA operon, presumably due to the loss of genes from the inverted repeat (IR) region found in most plastid genomes. In contrast, the marine species Fibrocapsa japonica contains the largest IR region and overall plastid genome for any raphidophyte examined thus far, mainly due to the presence of four large gene-poor regions and foreign DNA. Two plastid genes, tyr C in F. japonica and He. akashiwo and ser C in F. japonica , appear to have arisen via lateral gene transfer (LGT) from diatoms, and several raphidophyte open reading frames are demonstrably homologous to sequences in diatom plasmids and plastid genomes. A group II intron in the F. japonica psb B gene also appears to be derived by LGT. Background: Tumor size is a valuable prognostic factor because it is considered a measure of tumor burden. However, it is not always correlated with the tumor burden. This study aimed to identify the prognostic role of pathological tumor proportional size using the proportion of tumor cells on the pathologic report after curative resection in pathologic stage I lung adenocarcinoma., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 630 patients with pathologic stage I lung adenocarcinoma after lung resection for curative aims. According to the pathologic data, the proportion of tumor cells was reviewed and pathological tumor proportional size was estimated by multiplying the maximal diameter of the tumor by the proportion of tumor cells. We investigated the prognostic role of pathological tumor proportional size., Results: The median tumor size was 2 cm (range: 0.3-4), and the median pathological tumor proportional size was 1.5 (range: 0.12-3.8). This value was recategorized according to the current tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) classification, and 184 patients showed down staging compared with the current stage. The survival curve for disease-free survival using pathological tumor proportional size showed more distinction than the current stage classification. Multivariate analysis revealed that a down stage indicated a favorable prognostic factor., Conclusion: Pathological tumor cell proportional size may be associated with prognosis in stage I lung adenocarcinoma. The present study aimed to investigate the possible mechanism of action of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in endometrial glucose transporter-4 (GLUT-4) expression regulation by detecting the expression levels of endometrial inflammatory factors and GLUT-4 in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). A total of 140 patients were included in this study and divided into four groups: the PCOS group, the obesity + PCOS group, the normal group, and the obesity group (n = 35 each). The general clinical data of all patients were collected, and their expression levels of TNF-α, nuclear factor kappa B p65 (NF-κBp65), and GLUT-4 in the endometrium were tested via immunohistochemistry. Endometrial stromal cells were cultured in vitro and treated with TNF-α or pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) + TNF-α, and the expression levels of NF-κBp65, phospho-NF-κBp65 (p-NF-κBp65), and GLUT-4 were tested using Western blotting (WB) before and after treatment. As a result, we got: 1) Compared with the normal group, the abundance of the protein for TNF-α and NF-κBp65 in the endometrium of the patients with PCOS was elevated, while the expression level of GLUT-4 was decreased; the difference was statistically different (P < 0.05). The comparison between the obesity + PCOS group and the PCOS group yielded the same results. 2) According to the WB results, compared with the normal group, the abundance of the protein for endometrial GLUT-4 was decreased in the PCOS group, and the expression levels of p-NF-κBp65 and NF-κBp65 were increased in the obesity + PCOS group; the differences were statistically different (P < 0.05). The addition of TNF-α could decrease the abundance of the protein for GLUT-4 and increase the abundance of the protein for p-NF-κBp65. After treatment with PDTC + TNF-α, the abundance of the protein for p-NF-κBp65 decreased and GLUT-4 increased compared with the TNF-α group; these values were close to those of the control group. We concluded that the abundance of the proteins for local inflammatory factors in the endometrial cells of patients with PCOS was increased, indicating that TNF-α could affect the expression of endometrial GLUT-4 in such patients by activating the p-NF-κBp65 signaling pathway.

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are a representative class of emerging contaminants. This study aimed to investigate the PPCP removal performance and application safety of a biochar fabricated using the invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides (APBC). According to scanning electron microscopy and pore size analyses, APBC exhibited a porous structure with a specific surface area of 857.5 m 2 /g. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated the presence of surface functional groups, including phosphorus-containing groups, C=O, C=C, and -OH. The adsorption experiment showed that the maximum removal efficiency of ibuprofen was 97% at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L and APBC dosage of 0.8 g/L. The adsorption kinetics were fitted by the pseudo-second-order model with the highest correlation coefficient (R 2  = 0.9999). The adsorption isotherms were well described by the Freundlich model (R 2  = 0.9896), which indicates a dominant multilayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of APBC was 172 mg/g. A toxicity evaluation, based on Chlorella pyrenoidosa and human epidermal BEAS-2B cells, was carried out using a spectrum analysis, thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide assay, and flow cytometry. Background: Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of lung cancer and most adenocarcinomas have heterogeneous subtypes. Acinar-predominant adenocarcinoma is the most common. This study aimed to identify the prognostic impact of other mixed histological subtypes in acinar-predominant lung adenocarcinoma., Methods: The medical records of patients with pathological stage IA acinar-predominant lung adenocarcinoma between January 2010 and April 2016 were reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups according to the proportion of the lepidic subtype, with a cutoff value of 20%, and prognostic factors were analyzed., Results: A total of 215 patients with stage IA acinar-predominant adenocarcinoma were reviewed. The 20% or more lepidic subtype group had a low value of SUVmax (p = 0.001), good differentiation (p < 0.001) and a low incidence of the solid histological subtype (p = 0.016). Recurrence was significantly lower in the 20% or more lepidic subtype group (p = 0.008). The disease-free survival (p = 0.007) and overall survival (p = 0.046) were significantly different between the two groups. Multivariate analysis showed that lymphovascular invasion (p = 0.006) and no or less than 20% lepidic subtype (p = 0.036) were significant prognostic factors for disease-free survival., Conclusions: The lepidic proportion may be useful to predict recurrence in acinar-predominant stage IA lung adenocarcinoma., (© 2021 The Authors. Background: Patients with early lung cancer are the best candidates for surgical resection. However, those patients with high grade patterns (micropapillary or solid) do not have a good prognosis, even if they have been diagnosed with stage I lung adenocarcinoma. A new modified grading system has been introduced and this study aimed to identify the prognostic role of the new grading system in patients with stage IA lung adenocarcinoma., Methods: Patients with pathological stage IA lung adenocarcinoma, according to the eighth TNM classification who underwent curative resection, were reviewed. The pathological data of stage IA adenocarcinoma was reviewed 1 (grade 1: lepidic predominant with no or less than 20% of high grade patterns, grade 2: acinar or papillary predominant with no or less than 20% of high grade patterns, grade 3: any tumor with 20% or more of high grade patterns). Prognostic factors were analyzed for disease-free interval (DFI) and overall survival (OS) using Cox proportional models., Results: The medical records of 429 patients with stage IA lung adenocarcinoma were reviewed. DFI (p < 0.001) and OS (p < 0.001) were significantly lower in patients diagnosed with grade 3 compared with grade 1 and grade 2. Multivariate analysis showed that smoking (p = 0.013), value of SUVmax (p = 0.005), lymphovascular invasion (p = 0.004) and grade 3 (p = 0.008) were significant prognostic factors for DFI., Conclusions: The proportion of high grade patterns showed a different prognosis, even if curative resection had been performed for stage IA adenocarcinoma. Despite N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is functionally important in various biological processes, its role and the underlying regulatory mechanism in the liver remain largely unexplored. In the present study, we showed that fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO, an m6A demethylase) was involved in mitochondrial function during hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI). We found that the expression of m6A demethylase FTO was decreased during HIRI. In contrast, the level of m6A methylated RNA was enhanced. Adeno-associated virus-mediated liver-specific overexpression of FTO (AAV8-TBG-FTO) ameliorated the HIRI, repressed the elevated level of m6A methylated RNA, and alleviated liver oxidative stress and mitochondrial fragmentation in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) was a downstream target of FTO in the progression of HIRI. FTO contributed to the hepatic protective effect via demethylating the mRNA of Drp1 and impairing the Drp1-mediated mitochondrial fragmentation. Collectively, our findings demonstrated the functional importance of FTO-dependent hepatic m6A methylation during HIRI and provided valuable insights into the therapeutic mechanisms of FTO.

Direct and selective synthesis of primary amines from easily available precursors is attractive yet challenging. Herein, we report the rapid synthesis of primary amines from alkenes via metal-free regioselective hydroamination at room temperature. Ammonium carbonate was used as ammonia surrogate for the first time, allowing for efficient conversion of terminal and internal alkenes into linear, α-branched, and α-tertiary primary amines under mild conditions. Microalgae fuel food webs and biogeochemical cycles of key elements in the ocean. What determines microalgal dominance in the ocean is a long-standing question. Red tide distribution data (spanning 1990 to 2019) show that mixotrophic dinoflagellates, capable of photosynthesis and predation together, were responsible for ~40% of the species forming red tides globally. Counterintuitively, the species with low or moderate growth rates but diverse prey including diatoms caused red tides globally. The ability of these dinoflagellates to trade off growth for prey diversity is another genetic factor critical to formation of red tides across diverse ocean conditions. Detailed morphological documentation is provided for established Proschkinia taxa, including the generitype, P. bulnheimii, and P. complanata, P. complanatula, P. complanatoides and P. hyalosirella, and six new species. All established taxa are characterized from original material from historical collections. The new species described in this paper (P. luticola, P. staurospeciosa, P. impar, P. modesta, P. fistulispectabilis, and P. rosowskii) were isolated from the Western Pacific (Yellow Sea coast of Korea) and the Atlantic (Scottish and Texas coasts). Thorough documentation of the frustule, valve and protoplast architecture revealed the combination of characters diagnostic of the genus Proschkinia: a single-lobed chloroplast; a broad girdle composed of U-shaped, perforated bands; the position of the conopeate raphe-sternum relative to the external and internal valve surface; and the presence of an occluded process through the valve, termed the "fistula". Seven strains of Proschkinia were grown in culture and five of these were sequenced for nuclear ribosomal SSU and plastid-encoded rbcL. Phylogenetic analysis recovered a clade of Proschkinia with Fistulifera, another fistula-bearing diatom genus, and together these were sister to a clade formed of the Stauroneidaceae; in turn, all of these were sister to a clade composed of Parlibellus and two monoraphid genera Astartiella and Schizostauron. Despite morphological similarities between Proschkinia and the Naviculaceae, these two taxa are distant in our analysis. Background: Although bullectomy is the most curative treatment in primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP), postoperative recurrence is not uncommon. New bulla formation at the staple line is the most common cause of recurrence. However, the mechanism is not known. We believe that the pressure gradient plays the main role in new bulla formation. A large resection amount induces a prolonged pressure gradient for obliteration of the residual space. This study aimed to identify the association between resected lung volume and recurrence., Methods: The medical records of patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) bullectomy were reviewed between October 2010 and December 2017. A total of 396 patients underwent surgery for spontaneous pneumothorax. The electronic medical records (EMRs) of the patients were reviewed. Patients with secondary spontaneous pneumothorax were excluded. Patients who were diagnosed with emphysema on CT were excluded. Patients with PSP were excluded from the study if the bulla was not located in the apex or if there was no ruptured bulla at the time of the operation. Patients who lacked EMRs were also excluded. We reviewed the medical records of 276 patients. The apical resected lung volume was estimated using a conical volumetric formula with the use of the specimen size. The risk factors for postoperative recurrence were analyzed., Results: The median age was 19 years old (range 13-36). A total of 261 patients were male (94.6%). The median body weight and body mass index (BMI) were 58 kg (range 40-82) and 18.92 (range 15.21-26.47), respectively. In 24 patients, both sides were operated on simultaneously. The resected lung volume was obtained by using a conical volumetric formula, and the value was divided by the BMI value. The median value was 1.43 (0.03-5.67). The median operative time was 35 min (range 15-120). The median postoperative day was 4 (range 2-12). Age (p = 0.006), the value of the resected lung volume divided by BMI (p = 0.003), bilateral bullectomy (p = 0.013) and transverse diameter (p = 0.034) were associated with postoperative recurrence according to the univariate analysis. According to the multivariate analysis, age and the value of the lung volume divided by BMI were significant risk factors for postoperative recurrence., Conclusions: Younger age and a large resected lung volume and a low BMI are associated with postoperative recurrence after VATS bullectomy for PSP.

Several studies have reported an association between hypertension and upper aerodigestive tract cancer, but no large-scale, population-based studies have been conducted to confirm this.The aim of this study was to explore the association between hypertension and risk of upper aerodigestive tract cancer in Koreans. Participants who underwent a national health screening examination from January 1 to December 31, 2009 (n = 9,746,606) were enrolled. We assessed the development of oral, laryngeal, or esophageal cancer until 2016 using records from the Korean Health Insurance claims database during the study period. During the seven-year follow-up period, 6,062, 2,658, and 4,752 subjects were newly diagnosed with oral, laryngeal, and esophageal cancer, respectively. Participants with metabolic syndrome had the highest risk of developing oral cancer (hazard ratio (HR) 1.09, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03-1.16), laryngeal cancer (HR 1.27, 95% CI 1.17-1.38), and esophageal cancer (HR 1.11, 95% CI 1.04-1.19). Hypertension was a remarkable risk factor for each cancer (HR 1.11, 95% CI 1.04-1.17 for oral cancer; HR 1.23, 95% CI 1.13-1.33 for laryngeal cancer; HR 1.25, 95% CI 1.18-1.33 for esophageal cancer) after adjusting for age and other variables including gender, smoking status, alcohol intake, exercise, body mass index, and diabetes. Patients with untreated hypertension were at highest risk of developing oral cancer (HR 1.15; 95% CI 1.05-1.26), laryngeal cancer (HR 1.25; 95% CI 1.09-1.44), and esophageal cancer (HR 1.47; 95% CI 1.33-1.63) after adjusting for confounders. Hypertension was associated with the risk of oral, laryngeal, and esophageal cancer, despite of the lack of detailed biochemical information including the cancer cell types (squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma), cancer stage, physical findings and other medical history. Further studies are warranted to determine the reasons for this association and to establish effective interventions in this vulnerable population.

Objective: Moxifloxacin (MFX) shows good in vitro activity against Mycobacterium abscessus and can be a possible antibiotic therapy to treat M. abscessus infection; however, other studies have shown a lower or no activity. We aimed to evaluate MFX activity against M. abscessus using zebrafish (ZF) model in vivo ., Methods: A formulation of M. abscessus labeled with CM-Dil was micro-injected into ZF. Survival curves were determined by recording dead ZF every day. ZF were lysed, and colony-forming units (CFUs) were enumerated. Bacteria dissemination and fluorescence intensity in ZF were analyzed. Inhibition rates of MFX and azithromycin (AZM, positive control) were determined and compared., Results: Significantly increased survival rate was observed with different AZM concentrations. However, increasing MFX concentration did not result in a significant decrease in ZF survival curve. No significant differences in bacterial burdens by CFU loads were observed between AZM and MFX groups at various concentrations. Bacterial fluorescence intensity in ZF was significantly correlated with AZM concentration. However, with increasing MFX concentration, fluorescence intensity decreased slightly when observed under fluorescence microscope. Transferring rates at various concentrations were comparable between the MFX and AZM groups, with no significant difference., Conclusion: MFX showed limited efficacy against M . abscessus in vivo using ZF model. Background: Bullectomy with pleural procedure is the most effective means of treating primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP). However, recurrences after thoracoscopic bullectomy are unexpectedly frequent. Our aim was to identify the premonitory imaging features after thoracoscopic bullectomy that may associate with recurrences in PSP., Methods: The medical records of all patients undergoing thoracoscopic bullectomy for PSP between January 2013 and September 2016 were subject to review. A total of 154 procedures performed on 147 patients qualified for study. Clinical outcomes and characteristics of patients were reviewed and serial chest radiographies were assessed, analyzing risk factors for postoperative recurrences., Results: Median age of the male-predominant cohort (93.5%) was 19 (range, 15-39) years. Median operative time was 35 min, none reflecting complications. Postoperatively, diaphragmatic tenting was identified in 78 patients (50.6%), and pleural residual cavity was identified by chest radiography in 102 (66.2%). After discharge, remained diaphragmatic tenting (38/154, 24.7%) and pleural residual cavity (52/154, 33.8%) were identified by chest radiography. In univariate analysis, remained diaphragmatic tenting (P=0.026) and length of pleural residual cavity (P=0.024) emerged as risk factors for recurrence; and both reached significance in multivariate analysis (P=0.020 and P=0.018, respectively)., Conclusions: Remained diaphragmatic tenting after thoracoscopic surgery for PSP may be associated with the risk of postoperative recurrence., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interest: All authors have completed the ICMJE uniform disclosure form (available at http://dx.doi.org/10.21037/jtd.2019.11.46). Visible light driven nitrene transfer and insertion reactions of organic azides are an attractive strategy for the design of C-N bond formation reactions under mild reaction conditions, the challenge being lack of selectivity as a free nitrene reactive intermediate is usually involved. Herein is described an iron(iii) porphyrin catalysed sp 3 C-H amination and alkene aziridination with selectivity by using organic azides as the nitrogen source under blue LED light (469 nm) irradiation. The photochemical reactions display chemo- and regio-selectivity and are effective for the late-stage functionalization of natural and bioactive compounds with complexity. Significant global warming increases over the last century have resulted in recent research focused on practices to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Agricultural management practices, such as nitrogen (N) fertilization and aerated irrigation (AI), have significantly increased crop yields by improving soil water and fertilizer availability, and have been widely adopted in recent years. However, the interactive impact of different growing seasons and management practices in the greenhouse on GHG emissions is unclear. This greenhouse study was conducted during Spring and Autumn cultivation periods in Yangling, China with five N application rates (0, 50, 150, 200,250 kg ha -1 ) and two irrigation methods (AI and conventional irrigation [CK]). The results indicated that AI and N application both increased tomato yield, but also increased soil CO 2 and N 2 O emissions. The temperature was 4 °C higher during Spring cultivation than during Autumn cultivation, which significantly (P < 0.05) increased soil emissions of CO 2 , N 2 O, and net GHG by 10.6%, 43.8%, and 12.3%, respectively. However, the yield in Spring cultivation only increased by 5.1% (P > 0.05). Thus, among the selectable cultivation seasons, the cooler season (Autumn) along with AI and 200 kg N ha -1 , was recommended to farmers to avoid adverse effects of a warming environment. AI and 150 kg N ha -1 in Spring cultivation could be recommended as an alternative measure to local farmers. Our results suggest that in a future warmer climate, reducing nitrogen fertilizer rate in conjunction with the use of AI will remain important practices for maintaining crop yield while reducing soil net GHG emissions.
