Abstract

We present an open-access dataset of grape harvest dates (GHD) series that has been compiled from international, French and Spanish literature and from unpublished documentary sources from public organizations and from wine-growers. As of June 2011, this GHD dataset comprises 380 series mainly from France (93% of the data) as well as series from Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Luxemburg. The series have variable length (from 1 to 479 data, mean length of 45 data) and contain gaps of variable sizes (mean ratio of observations/series length of 0.74). The longest and most complete ones are from Burgundy, Switzerland, Southern Rhône valley, Jura and Ile-de-France. The most ancient harvest date of the dataset is in 1354 in Burgundy. The GHD series were grouped into 27 regions according to their location, to geomorphological and geological criteria, and to past and present grape varieties. The GHD regional composite series (GHD-RCS) were calculated and compared pairwise to assess their reliability assuming that series close to one another are highly correlated. Most of the pairwise correlations are significant (p-value < 0.001) and strong (mean pairwise correlation coefficient of 0.58). As expected, the correlations tend to be higher when the vineyards are closer. The highest correlation (R = 0.91) is obtained between the High Loire Valley and the Ile-de-France GHD-RCS. The strong dependence of the vine cycle on temperature and, therefore, the strong link between the harvest dates and the temperature of the growing season was also used to test the quality of the GHD series. The strongest correlations are obtained between the GHD-RCS and the temperature series of the nearest weather stations. Moreover, the GHD-RCS/temperature correlation maps show spatial patterns similar to temperature correlation maps. The stability of the correlations over time is explored. The most striking feature is their generalised deterioration at the late 19th–early 20th century. The possible effects on GHD of the phylloxera crisis, which took place at this time, are discussed. The median of all the standardized GHD-RCS was calculated. The distribution of the extreme years of this general series is not homogenous. Extremely late years all occur during a two-century long time window from the early 17th to the early 19th century, while extremely early years are frequent during the 16th and since the mid-19th century.

Abstract

In this article, the authors reflect on an interesting and complex period in French history, that which occurred after the death of Louis XIV when the country was ruled by Philippe II, the Duke of Orléans. The authors consider the relatively brief regency (1715–1723) as an example of a special type of historical epoch, which they denote with the term “conservative transition”. Characteristic of monarchical and authoritarian regimes, such epochs are distinguished by a comparatively peaceful transition of power in conditions of social instability that threaten revolution and/or or coup d’état. As a result of such transitions, the authorities are strengthened and power is transferred to the same social group in whose hands it lay before the beginning of the crisis. The experience of Philippe of Orléans and his advisor Guillaume Dubois demonstrates that guaranteeing a conservative transition requires extraordinary political and economic measures and the skilful mobilisation of the ruling class. This discussion of the regency allows the authors to offer a concise description of France at the moment of Peter I’s visit (April-June 1717) and to propose a new view of this extremely controversial period in French history., В статье приведены авторские размышления об интересном и сложном периоде во французской истории, когда после смерти Людовика XIV страной правил его племянник Филипп II, герцог Орлеанский. Относительно короткий период Регентства (1715–1723) авторы рассматривают как пример особого типа исторических эпох, которые они объединяют под зонтичным термином «консервативный переход». Такие эпохи, характерные для монархических и авторитарных режимов, характеризуются относительно мирным транзитом власти в условиях явной социальной нестабильности, грозящей перерасти в революцию и/или государственный переворот, причем в результате этого транзита власть укрепляется и передается тем же социальным группам, в чьих руках она находилась до наступления кризиса. Опыт Филиппа Орлеанского и его советника, а позднее первого министра аббата Дюбуа показывает, что обеспечение консервативного перехода требует принятия неординарных политико-экономических мер и умелой мобилизации правящего класса. Рассуждения о Регентстве, с одной стороны, позволяют авторам дать сжатое описание того состояния, в котором пребывало Французское королевство в момент его посещения Петром I (апрель-июнь 1717 г.), с другой – предложить новый взгляд на этот весьма неоднозначный период французской истории.

Abstract

6 Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE), 91191 Gif-sur-Yvette, France ABSTRACT: Time-series of growing season air temperature anomalies in the Parisian region and of Pinot noir grape harvest dates (GHD) in Burgundy (1676-2004) are analyzed in the frequency domain. Variability of both time-series display 3 significant frequency-bands (peaks significant at the 5% level): (1) a low-frequency-band (multi-decadal) with a 25 yr peak period, (2) a 3 to 8 yr band period (inter-annual) with a 3.1 yr peak period, and (3) a 2 to 3 yr band period (quasi-bien- nial) with a 2.4 yr peak period. Joint sea surface temperature/sea level pressure (SST/SLP) EOF analyses based on data from the 20th century along with spatio-temporal patterns for the above frequency-bands, are presented. SST anomalies were found to display early significant spatial SST patterns in the north Atlantic ocean (air temperature lagging by 6 mo) similar to those ob - tained from EOF analyses. It is proposed that the robust power spectra for the above frequency- bands are linked with Atlantic climate variability modulating western European climate: (1) the global Multi-Decadal Oscillation (MDO) with its Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO) foot- print, (2) the Atlantic Inter-Annual (IA) fluctuations, and (3) the Atlantic Quasi-Biennial (QB) fluc- tuations. Moreover these specific western European climate signals are perceived as contributors to the timing of GHD in Burgundy. Thus, advance knowledge on the evolution and phasing of the above climate fluctuations become important elements for viticulture and wine industry management, since anthropogenic effects could have modified time-series patterns, particularly since the mid-1980s.

Abstract

Dog-days, cold periods, grape-harvests (France, 15-19th centuries). The climate history can be based on several kinds of data. In the present paper, French records of grape-harvest dates in Burgundy from 1370 to 1890 were used for evaluate the climates at these various period of time. These results reveal that temperatures as high as those reached in the 1990s have occurred several times in Burgundy since 1370. Correlations between temperatures and historic data are presented.

Abstract

French records of grape-harvest dates in Burgundy were used to reconstruct spring-summer temperatures from 1370 to 2003 using a process-based phenology model developed for the Pinot Noir grape. Our results reveal that temperatures as high as those reached in the 1990s have occurred several times in Burgundy since 1370. However, the summer of 2003 appears to have been extraordinary, with temperatures that were probably higher than in any other year since 1370.
