This article explores the relationships between faculty library use, their perceptions of the importance of library resources, and its impact on their research productivity at a public research university. The authors used a self-reported faculty survey and publication records from a faculty activity reporting system to answer this question. Findings showed that faculty's perceptions of the library resource for their research had no relationships with faculty research productivity, whereas a positive correlation was found between the frequency of use of online journals and databases, and faculty research productivity. Qualitative findings revealed that faculty viewed the library as providing and purchasing the needed library resources, and that they valued the librarians and library services as essential to their teaching and research.

Education about scientific publishing and manuscript peer review is not universally provided in undergraduate science courses. Since peer review is integral to the scientific process and central to the identity of a scientist, we envision a paradigm shift where teaching peer review becomes integral to undergraduate science education. We hypothesize that teaching undergraduates how to peer review scientific manuscripts may facilitate their development of scientific literacy and identity formation. To this end, we developed a constructivist, service-learning curriculum for biology undergraduates to learn about the mechanisms of peer review using preprints and then to write and publish their own peer reviews of preprints as a way to authentically join the scientific community of practice. The curriculum was implemented as a semester-long intervention in one class and, in another class, as an embedded module intervention. Students' scientific literacy and peer review ability were assessed using quantitative methods. Student's perceptions of their scientific literacy and identity were assessed using thematic analysis of students' reflective writing. Here, we present data on the improvement in the peer review ability of undergraduates in both classes and data on the curriculum's interrelated impact on students' development of scientific literacy, identity, and belonging in peer and professional discourse spaces. These data suggest that undergraduates can and should be trained in peer review to foster the interrelated development of their scientific literacy, scientific identity, and sense of belonging in science.

This study aimed to reveal the trend of research on e-assessment in the field of educational sciences through scientific mapping and bibliometric analyses. For this purpose, the numerical distribution of research on e-assessment, citation analysis, research themes and the change of trend topics were examined. The publications to be examined were selected from WoS database according to PRISMA model, and 911 studies were included in the analysis. VOSviewer, Biblioshiny, Smart Bibliometrics and Leximancer software were used in data analysis. Apparently, there has been a significant increase in the number of research since 2005, and publications have been mostly produced in form of articles and papers. The most cited and the most productive countries are the USA, the United Kingdom and Australia, while the most cited journals are Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education and British Journal of Educational Technology. An analysis of the keyword map revealed that the themes of technology and motivation, blended learning and collaboration, interaction and innovative approaches, validity and reliability, higher education, quality, basic disciplines and COVID-19 were frequently emphasized in the studies on e-assessment. An analysis of trend topics by years showed that, between 2010 and 2021, the trend topic distribution changed to include topics such as COVID-19, academic integrity, engagement, cheating, case study, and higher education. All these findings reveal that e-evaluation activities have displayed a development and transformation over time with the effect of developing technology, the pandemic, the spread of e-learning, the expansion of communication opportunities and many other factors.

Media literacy is an essential area of discussion with its digital competencies and skills, the online opportunities it provides, and the risks it carries. The mobilization of today's media tools, the ability to connect to the network through smartphones regardless of time and place, and easy accessibility have brought new media tools to the centre of our lives. The speed and change in new communication technologies present new opportunities and risks, especially for children and young people. Today, the new media environment and tools have a social role in determining, transforming, shaping and giving new forms to social relations. Communication relationships, online behaviours and attitudes realized by technology are the subjects of many studies. Being constantly networked or connected is essential in young people's social identity construction and carries many risks. The individual who needs to be media literate in the face of traditional media has to be much more conscious and educated in the face of multi-media channels and productions that are renewed and changed with today's digital developments. In this context, structural changes and transformations in information and communication technologies have made it necessary to discuss new media literacy and new literacy skills, online opportunities and risks. As a result of the conceptual discussion, it has been revealed that individuals who have the digital competencies and skills of the 21st century, who can use online opportunities at the maximum level, who are aware of online risks and can minimize them, should be trained with new media literacy education.

The purpose of this research is to develop the learning media, i.e., a digital magazine, to improve the biological literacy skills of the students. The research method used Research and Development (R&D) with ADDIE develops models. The developed learning media, HAIBIO, consists of biofact, bio lab, bioword, and biogame. The instrument test of biological literacy consists of 30multiple-choice items based on four stages of biological literacy: nominal, functional, structural, and multidimensional. The validity test is conducted by paying attention to presentation, content, and language by two expert validators who say that media is valid to use in the class. The test of empirical validity is conducted for 30 students in class XI Science 1 in MAN 1 Bogor City. The empirical validity test results show that learning media are valid, and the instrument test found that 15 items are valid and five items are not. The reliability test result shows that 88% of respondents said that the instrument of biological literacy is reliable. The result of the normality test shows a significance value of 0,117 in [alpha] = 0.05, indicating that the data is normally distributed. The T-dependent test result shows a significance value of -7.679 with a t-table of -2.042 in [alpha] = 0.05. It shows that there is a higher enhancement score post-test than pre-test. The result of the N-Gain test is 0,44 in the medium category, and the effect size score is 2.93. That shows that HAIBIO e-magz is improving the biological literacy skills of the students.

This study aimed to determine the utilization of research results of the selection of marine fungi for milkfish ("Chanos chanos") feed. The study was conducted in stages, starting with identifying the issues in the learning activities of biotechnology concepts, followed by experiments to identify research methods and products, selecting an adaptation of research findings as the learning source content, and application and development of research findings as learning. The data and information were gathered through an interview grid and a questionnaire, and the findings of the surveys were then analyzed qualitatively. The results of a selection study of marine fungi from Dua Island, Banten, Indonesia as feed for milkfish related to basic competency (KD) 3.10 and 4.10 can be used as learning resources as digital magazines for class XII high school students. Thus, media can help student in learning process.

This systematic review aims to document, analyze and synthesize the latest research related to reflective teaching and professional development in pre-service English teachers. The reasoning behind this review is to substantiate that acquiring a reflective teaching practice can be the best alternative for novice teachers to open their minds, renovate their teaching methodologies and knowledge, and adapt their teaching practice to be able to become outstanding language educators. Thirteen articles have been systematically reviewed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline and five exploration issues emerged: (a) the relation between reflective teaching and professional development, (b) reflective teaching benefits, (c) the efficacy of reflective teaching, (d) the continuity of reflective teaching and (e) reflective teaching strategies. The obtained results show different advantageous benefits such as learning from peers by sharing similar experiences, structure and restructure of new teaching knowledge, and the development of continuous resilience to deal with and overcome difficulties in the professional practice. This review suggests that future research should concentrate on programs addressing the importance of being reflective by introducing the topic before teaching practicum which is key for faster integrated professional development.

The aim of higher education is to make the student the protagonist of their learning. In this context, the researchers must create appropriate scenarios that enable students to explore and develop critical thinking both independently and cooperatively while making use of information technology. This paper presents a model of pedagogical practice in the subject of Introduction to Research Methodology (IRM) based on the construction of literature maps applying John W. Creswell's research design theory through the use of virtual whiteboards. 120 students from the seventh cycle of the study plan of the School of Architecture of the National University of San Agustín participated. As a result, the model used in this paper enabled students to collect and organize the data necessary to formulate their research and develop critical thinking based on scientific knowledge. In this process, it was possible to reflect on the importance of emphasizing the development of critical and creative thinking skills in order to create literary maps that contribute to the comprehensive education of students. It should be noted that students are obliged to be protagonists in the construction of their knowledge especially in subjects that develop competencies related to scientific research.

Reports on a panel discussion held at LILAC 2022 on student academic reading during the COVID-19 pandemic. Draws on data from two surveys, but also discusses the implications of this research for teachers and information literacy (IL) practitioners. In summary, students carried out almost all their academic reading in electronic format, due to the restrictions in place. However, in common with research conducted prior to the pandemic, their preferences for reading in print format remained. Students also report doing less of their assigned readings, feeling more tired as well as reporting other negative health benefits from excess use of screens and devices. The study has implications for librarians, learning developers and for academic staff assigning course readings to students. Ongoing research in this area is recommended.

Preprint articles are available on servers, such as arXiv and ChemRxiv, at no-cost to benefit the movement toward open access of research. However, the use of preprint research articles as a reference source in academia is not heavily documented. To examine if researchers are utilizing preprint articles, this paper examines citation trends in the dissertations of chemistry and physics PhD candidates who studied at four University Centers in the State University of New York system (SUNY). Using citation analysis methodology, references cited in PhD dissertations published between 2018-2021 were analyzed. Key findings showed that PhD candidate authors cited preprint articles at a low rate, and relied on traditional resources for their dissertations, such as articles and books. Physics preprints were cited with more frequency than chemistry preprints. This data provides a benchmark for tracking the use of physics and chemistry preprints in academic research. The results of this study are also useful for examining library collections, particularly around core journal titles. Additionally, this paper raises questions about the information literacy skills of doctoral students. The doctoral students' best practices of using preprints could be explored in future research.

Using data from seven R1 and R2 universities in Ohio, this study seeks to determine the extent of usage of full-text e-journal articles stored across multiple platforms. Specifically, COUNTER 5 data is presented from five major academic journal publishers (Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Oxford, Wiley, and Springer), looking at usage within each of the publishers' respective platforms, as well as in EBSCO, JSTOR, and OhioLINK's Electronic Journal Center platform. The overarching goal of the analysis is to identify where exactly usage occurred for this e-journal content within the different platforms, especially in cases where an individual title has duplicate full-text access. Analysis of this data was conducted using Tableau and Excel. Findings raise significant questions about end-user behavior in terms of students' and faculty's ability to locate full text, regardless of whether it is discoverable from Google or other commercial search engines. The findings also suggest a strong connection between EBSCO usage and the academic calendar, with peak usage (as a percentage of overall usage) occurring in October, November, March, and April. Lastly, findings for Taylor & Francis e-journals within EBSCO call into question what these duplicate holdings mean for "big deal" subscription packages.

This article explains how teachers can use educational vlogging as a tool to facilitate students' reflective practice in primary schools. Vlogging is a short duration video recording that engages the learner in critical self-reflection. The widespread accessibility of digital devices in Irish schools offer primary teachers opportunities to use vlogging as a tool to enable students to reflect on their learning, and gather learning analytics that provide insight into the learning process. The Educational Entrepreneurial Approach (EEA) (Crotty, 2014) to action research was employed to show how examining a COVID-19 school news broadcasting project provided the rationale for developing and creating an e-learning course. This course consisted of fifteen educational videos that aimed to enable teachers to facilitate student vlogging in a disadvantaged primary school. Research data was gathered through reflective journaling and validated through meetings between me as researcher (Author 1), my Supervisor (Author 2), and fellow students on the MSc. in Education and Training Management (eLearning) colleagues -- hereafter referred to as MEME. Findings offer insights into the benefits and limitations of educational vlogging and detail how creating the e-learning course, "Vlogging in the Primary School," was transformative for me and for the school. The outcomes indicate that educational vlogging can potentially benefit teachers and students in Irish primary schools and beyond.

This article explores the application of journal quality and credibility evaluation tools to library science publications. The researchers investigate quality and credibility attributes of forty-eight peer-reviewed library science journals with open access components using two evaluative tools developed and published by librarians. The results identify common positive and negative attributes of library science journals, compare the results of the two evaluation tools, and discuss their ease of use and limitations. Overall, the results show that while library science journals do not fall prey to the same concerning characteristics that librarians use to caution other researchers, there are several areas in which publishers can improve the quality and credibility of their journals.

About half of Library and Information Science (LIS) journals continue to charge authors to publish articles open access (OA) or do not offer OA publishing at all. To further investigate the financial and other perceived barriers preventing these LIS journals from transitioning to no-publishing fee OA models, this exploratory project surveyed lead editors for each identified LIS journal. Results indicate most of the journals have not discussed transitioning to a no-publishing fee OA model, and that finances are the main barrier. Most also indicated a lack of awareness of their journal's budget. The most popular no-publishing fee OA model was Subscribe to Open.

Contemporary literature suggests that music education is stuck in a cycle of cultural reproduction in which music teachers and curriculum writers value Western art music more than culturally-diverse and modern, technology-saturated music's, and train the next generation to hold similar views. A MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) was developed to challenge music teachers' worldviews and to develop critical thinking about the field. In this mixed-methods study, we analysed 18 months of qualitative and quantitative data provided by the more than 1,600 course participants in response to paedagogical "provocations" to assess whether it was successful in prompting critical thinking and worldview change. We used three methods to interrogate three distinct datasets: basic content analysis of participants' publicly written reflections, statistical analysis of peer marking and context-network maps of peer comments. Between-methods triangulation crystallised our findings. We find that through required peer-review of public postings, an online community of practice formed, that it encouraged teachers to engage deeply with new ideas, and engage in Critical Thinking. We find that those who had a disposition towards critical thinking in the early assessments responded most positively to the pedagogy of provocation and were consistently prepared to question their own worldview and practice.

One of the most vital forms of dialogue for a novice teacher is the inner dialogue of reflective practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate if and how blogging supports the ability of preservice teachers (PSTs) to reflect on their student teaching experience. Findings suggest that blogging may serve as both response and stimuli, providing a structure for interns to consider past and future practice. Perspective taking also seemed prompted by self-questioning. Photos within blog posts may serve as semiotic mediators, offering reflective cues. Furthermore, blogging may offer opportunities for PSTs to process and regulate emotion, important in a profession strained by burnout.

In this paper, we use data from 44 Danish families to develop a new conceptual framework for analysing family learning environments and how they shape children's opportunities in the Scandinavian context. We use data from qualitative interviews and a new smartphone app to outline six key dimensions of family learning environments that intersect in four types, which we label Expansive curators, Recreational home dwellers, Casual pragmatists and Disempowered strugglers. The dimensions and types of family learning environments provide a conceptual framework for (1) identifying a set of mechanisms that might explain intergenerational associations in socioeconomic outcomes; (2) linking dimensions of family learning environments often studied in isolation (e.g. family activities and networks); (3) incorporating dimensions of learning environments rarely considered (e.g. day care and children's use of digital devices); and (4) distinguishing socioeconomic gradients in family learning environments.

This case study aimed to explore Saudi EFL students' attitudes towards learning writing by using blogging in practicing their writing activities and tasks. It also sought to measure the effectiveness of blogging as an effective approach to enhance student's writing abilities. The participants in this study were five students second-year undergraduate EFL students studying in the Department of English in Saudi university. The participants had completed a writing skills course as a compulsory course in their study program. A semi-structured interview was used to acquire data for this case study in order to learn about learners' blogging experiences. The semi-structured interview data were analyzed thematically. The findings showed that the learners' attitudes were positive toward using the class blog as a beneficial approach in EFL writing classes. Furthermore, they confirmed that their English writing skills improved as a result of blogging. Additionally, they mentioned that blogging enabled them to build an interactive learning environment in which they could share their experiences and perspectives with their peers and learn from one another. Finally, the study, emphasizes the importance of using blogging in EFL writing classes and recommends that blogging to be part of writing teaching curricula at the university level.

Those who choose teaching as a second career bring with them a "dowry" from their former career including: work experience, distinctive organizational culture, professional knowledge, competences and skills, and experience working under managers. These skills and competences may play a distinctive role in the professional socialization process of second career teachers. Qualitative research was used to perform content analysis of 1,298 reflective blogs' posts written by 98 second career teachers during their first year of teaching in secondary education in Israel. The findings yielded two main themes: (1) Reverberations of the former career in the second career including two sub-categories: (a) Former career as a teaching benefactor and (b) Former career as a hindrance to successful shift to teaching; and (2) Expressions of parenting as a former career. The discussion section presents some practical implication for teacher educators and high-schools' principals for a quality professional integration of second career teachers in to teaching.

This study investigates how article downloads from ScienceDirect changed after Temple University Libraries downsized its all-inclusive Elsevier big deal bundle to a selective custom package. After the libraries lost current-year access to nearly half of Elsevier's active journals, the total downloads from Elsevier journals declined by 16.2 percent over three years. Combined use of still-subscribed and open access journals fell 10.6 percent in the same three years, suggesting that the drop in total use is due not only to the loss of journals but also to factors that would affect the remaining journals, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and a slight decrease in enrollment. Patrons may have substituted articles from still-subscribed and open access journals for those that were canceled, though the data are not conclusive. Reliance on open access appears to have increased.

With the development of Web 2.0 technologies, the studies conducted in this field are diversifying and quite different results are obtained. In the current study, the contributions of wikis and blogs, which are considered as web 2.0 technologies, to academic performance were examined with meta-analysis method. The studies following quasi-experimental approach and have a control group with pretest-posttest measures published both in Turkish and English are included in the study. In consideration of the criteria determined, 19 studies were selected to be considered for the current study. The studies having participants from nine different countries were coded, and then they were analyzed in a meta-analysis software called CMA. As the distribution of data was heterogeneous, a random effects model was selected and the analysis was performed. Effect size (E++) according to the analysis performed by the Hedge's g value and 95% confidence interval was found as 0.740. Results show that the impact of web 2.0 technologies on academic performance is positive and moderate.

With the transition to online teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for identifying effective methods of assessment has become paramount. The methods of traditional summative in-person, paper-and-pencil exams could not be adapted to the online environment. In case of unsupervised (non-proctored) exams it was impossible to ensure students' academic honesty. Some universities have offered remotely supervised (proctored) examinations, which has been a rare exception. The pandemic prompted teachers to innovate their assessment practice and apply formative assessment methods as an alternative to traditional summative assessment. They have started using tasks such as e-portfolios, online learning journals, blogs, online presentations, creative writing, and open-book exams, which present golden opportunities to involve students in the assessment process. This study aims to explore assessment-related experiences of language and communication teachers at higher education institutions (HEIs) during the pandemic. Our mixed-method research combines an international survey administered to university language and communication teachers (N=301) with in-depth interviews with a selection of participants (n=18) of the same background. The results provide valuable insights into the perceptions that university language and communication teachers have of effective assessment methods and pedagogical approaches engaging learners in assessment. The implications of the study advocate a growing trend toward a wider use of learner-centered assessment.

The range of study programs in finance and the ways how to study due to place, time, and focus has increased in recent years. Students can choose what and how they want to learn. If someone finds an appropriate program he must decide to study face-to-face, online, or in a hybrid format. Finance is often a duty in business administration or related study programs. For many students in those classes the financial topics are bleak. This leads to a passive consumption of contents and ends often in dropping out. The aim of this research was to discuss methods to activate and keep learners motivated by using well selected media in teaching. To identify which media is used in teaching, a literature review was done. Teaching annual reports and other official reports available in English and/or German from several international educational institutions are read, compared, and analyzed. Additionally, secondary academic literature is checked for further examples. In a first step, therefore, different techniques to active students, such as collaboration or interaction, are discussed critically on a literature base. In a second step, based on the techniques, a selection matrix was obtained that supports educators to select the right medium to deal with a certain technique. Many examples were found that might assist educators in the practical use of the selection matrix.

The various possibilities that social media offers to language learners and teachers have long been recognized by researchers within the field of language instruction, and many studies have been carried out in an attempt to address and unpack its potential contributions. This paper aims to review such research on the use of mainstream social media in language teaching and learning published in "Computer Assisted Language Learning," a top tier (i.e., Q1) journal indexed in major citation index systems (e.g., Arts & Humanities Citation Index, the Social Sciences Citation Index and Scopus), between the years 2016-2020 inclusive. For the purposes of the study, a total of 23 articles that meet the selection criteria is reviewed and presented in five sections. The first section deals with the majority of the articles, which are found to be on the use of social networking in language teaching and learning. In the following sections, studies on the use of videoconferencing, wikis, blogging and forums are discussed. Collectively, the studies reviewed in this paper outline a critical role for the use of social media in language instruction and the study aims to provide valuable insights for researchers, teachers and learners.

Despite the growing interest of academia in public outreach, little is known about what university students, among who are future researchers, take away from their academic education in terms of research dissemination opportunities. In this study, we analyzed social science students' discourses on creative dissemination practices in relation to standardized dissemination practices. Our findings reveal that student's conceptions of creative research dissemination (CRD) are diverse and influenced by varying perceptions of knowledge, the public, and creativity. Discourses on CRD are also strongly linked with values such as innovation and impact on society, but the concrete meaning of these values often remains undefined. We propose rethinking the academic context at the educational level so it offers a platform for multimodal formats of research dissemination. This would require encouraging students to take a stance toward how they envision a progressive academic future.

A qualified teaching method is hard to achieve without traditional classroom lessons. For learning purposes, students need to interact and influence each other, like being part of an osmotic process. They need to learn in a stimulating environment, developing the ability to manage conflicts and to compare opinions. How can this be possible during a pandemic? In an innovative distance learning experiment, students have been involved in significant changes to traditional teaching methods, forced to reinvent themselves and give up face-to-face interactions. General Medicinal Chemistry and Medicinal and Toxicological Chemistry I courses at Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro (UMG) accepted the pandemic call for challenge by renewing their teaching approach, trying to re-establish the sense of community jeopardized by distance learning. Students have been involved in the creation of a multimedia tool, called "MedChemBlog", an innovative distance learning experiment. The aim was to improve the understanding of the chemical structures and drug molecular mechanisms of action, in a unique constructive fashion provided by scientific websites and databases, e.g., Protein Data Bank, DrugBank, and PubChem. In this way, students have been involved in the creation of the course's blog, their "MedChemBlog", revealed as a collector of "food for thought" for present and future students.

Open access (OA) publishing presents university librarians, administrators, and faculty researchers with a paradox of both opportunities and challenges. For faculty researchers in particular, the decision of whether to pursue OA publication of their scholarship is driven by their perceptions of the credibility and quality of OA publishing. While there is a variety of extant literature broaching these perceptions, there are few quantitative analyses with an n greater than 100 respondents, and a notable lack of research in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study mitigates this gap in scholarship regarding OA publishing, offering a quantitative analysis of a survey sample of 134 UAE faculty researchers. We find statistically significant findings regarding the relationship between one's position on OA and length of publishing career and professorial rank. Similarly, we find that those with favourable views of OA publishing are more likely to believe that OA journals are peer reviewed, increase likelihood of being cited, allow authors to repost content, and are a more principled alternative to traditional publishers. Those who believe that their research should be freely available to all readers or that OA publishing broadens their research impact were also highly likely to hold favourable views of OA publishing. Finally, our findings suggest that support for OA publishing at the departmental and institutional level remains ambiguous, with findings yielding contradicting results on the matter. The study contributes to content regarding scholarship, library science, and university administration.

Mzuzu University Library provides various e-library services to postgraduate students. However, a minimal amount is known regarding the use of these e-library services by postgraduate students. This mixed methods quantitative study aimed to investigate postgraduate students' use of e-library services. The findings reveal that 95% of postgraduate students knew about e-library services. In comparison, 83% knew internet access, and 73% knew e-journals service from 10 e-library services that Mzuzu University offers. Further, 80% and 64% of postgraduate students used the internet and e-journals, respectively, while other e-library services were the least used. Additionally, 68% of users were satisfied with the internet and 64% were confident with e-journals. Factors such as usefulness, availability of support, and resources influenced postgraduate students' use of e-library services. Inadequate infrastructure and staff support discouraged some users from effectively using e-library services. Training and marketing are highly recommended.

In fall 2019, students at the University of Mississippi began the process of starting the university's first creative publication for/by LGBTQ+ students and allies. Over the course of two years, I helped these students plan, create, and produce their zine. These kinds of texts promote identity-formation and help students feel greater connection to campus as they see the coexistence of their embodied identities within their academic community. Early in our production process, I realized our localized context presented certain theoretical, ethical, and practical issues in the formation of this counterpublic. Because of the function of counterpublics, "Missy's" early editorial discussions centered on audience and means of circulation. This personal reflection explores literacy practices connected to our publication of a queer zine in a conservative part of the country.

Given academia's frequent use of publication metrics and the inconsistencies in metrics across disciplines, this study examines how various disciplines are treated differently by metric systems. We seek to offer academic librarians, university rank and tenure committees, and other interested individuals guidelines for distinguishing general differences between journal bibliometrics in various disciplines. This study addresses the following questions: How well represented are different disciplines in the indexing of each metrics system (Eigenfactor, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar)? How does each metrics system treat disciplines differently, and how do these differences compare across metrics systems? For university libraries and academic librarians, this study may increase understanding of the comparative value of various metrics, which hopefully will facilitate more informed decisions regarding the purchase of journal subscriptions and the evaluation of journals and metrics systems. This study indicates that different metrics systems prioritize different disciplines, and metrics are not always easily compared across disciplines. Consequently, this study indicates that simple reliance on metrics in publishing or purchasing decisions is often flawed.

The blog and distance learning: the former can enhance, enlighten, and elevate the educational experience for the student and the teaching experience for the instructor. And blogs are especially suited for the asynchronous environment where nearly everything is written and remains throughout the course, so students can continually refer to the blog and interact with it, while instructors can use it to highlight or reenforce various components of the course. This article provides a miniguide to constructing and implanting blogs that will result in an overall improvement to the effectiveness of courses.

This study aims to unpack the reflective learning processes involved in developing a Masters' research project proposal as part of a multidisciplinary Research Design course. Using inductive analysis, we explored students' reflective blogs written over a period of a semester and defined the reflections according to an adaptation of Hatton and Smith's (1995) framework. Our findings are that the nature of each individual blog topic affected the quality and level of reflection, which in turn is affected by the 'learning ecology' (Harvey, Coulson, & McMaugh, 2016 p. 12). More highly scaffolded blogs showed greater evidence of reflective practice. Likewise the nature of the practice (starting research) influenced reflection, since many processes are internal rather than requiring explicit practice to reflect on. In addition, as nascent practitioner researchers, the students are also involved in reflexivity rather than reflection and therefore some topics encouraged this form of reflection more than others did. This study is significant in that it explores reflection in research and practitioner contexts, focuses on early career researchers/practitioners and brings a multidisciplinary perspective.

This is a response to Michael J. Boyle's "To Act with Justice and Love Tenderly: Exploring the Church's Call for Inclusion." While Janice L. Benton agrees with his suggestions of self-reflection, retreats, and guided explorations of the Church documents, she also recommends gathering the perspectives of individuals with disabilities by talking with them and reading blogs and articles from disability-rights advocates, reflecting a more inclusive dynamic of working together versus the helper and helped mentality. Also while he offers a thoughtful conclusion to his article, she would add to urge Catholic school teachers, administrators, and other personnel to see the student as you see any other student without focusing or dwelling on the disability and to remember that well-documented Church teaching is without equivocation--all means all (Racunas, 2017). Social media can be a support during the initial training of communication professionals, although most studies on social media and learning have mainly focused on other professional groups. The purpose of this article is to explore how communication students learn and their use of social media platforms, in order to identify the role of social media in supporting communication students' learning. Data was collected using a questionnaire sent to communication students of the UOC and analyzed using a clustering technique, to identify student profiles based on how they organize their learning and their use of social media platforms. Our results suggest that there are 5 main student profiles: (i) students that learn through many contexts with strong support of Wikipedia, Blogs and YouTube; (ii) students with preference for academically guided learning resources; (iii) students with preference for informal and digital learning contexts, supported by social networks; (iv) students with preference for physical and formal contexts with a slight support of interactive social media platforms and (v) students detached academically with low use of learning resources and occasional use of social media platforms. Findings show that in the formative stage, there is a different degree of utility of social media among communication students, with a division between platforms that we could designate as more static and sources of information (Wikipedia, blogs or YouTube) and more interactive and dynamic (Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn). The findings of this article can help to inform and make communication studies more flexible, collaborative and personalized oriented. In follow up studies, it would be interesting to delve further into how COVID-19 has affected the role of social media platforms.

Background: The Internet provides individuals with intellectual disability with access to information and participation in a broader society, but it also presents risks when content is difficult to comprehend. This study aimed to test whether students with intellectual disability enhanced their comprehension of online blogs as a function of the format (text vs. video) and linguistic simplification. Method: Young students with intellectual disability read or watched text and video-blog posts about environment, health, society, and technology in their original version or a linguistically simplified/easy-to-read version. Then, they completed tests that assessed their reading processing (e.g., calibration) and comprehension of blog content. Results: Participants predicted that they would correctly answer 80% of the comprehension questions, but their average comprehension of the blog posts was 55%, regardless of the condition. Previous levels of students' reading comprehension skills predicted their blog comprehension scores and interacted with format and simplification. Those participants with higher reading comprehension skills learned more from non-simplified than from simplified blog posts while those with lower levels of reading comprehension skills did not benefit from linguistic simplification nor video-blog format although the difference with regard to higher comprehenders was lower in the video and simplified conditions. Conclusions: Improving reading comprehension abilities of students with intellectual disability is essential to prevent the digital divide while linguistic simplification is not a useful accommodation and even counterproductive for higher reading comprehenders.

Reading comprehension is still considered as a part of new literacy required to encounter the Industry 4.0. Reading comprehension in this era is related to reading the data presented in technology. In addition to students' ability to understand readings, students sort positive and negative information in a reading through reading comprehension. Students can also get used to utilize the internet access to read various information and stories. Therefore, the presence of the Industry 4.0 is considered to not have negative effects on students. This research focuses on examining the online magazine-based reading workshop model towards the improvement of fourth grade students' reading comprehension skills. The research employed quasi experiment methods with a nonequivalent group design. The research sample was selected purposively from fourth grade students in primary schools in Cimahi City. The data were collected using the test of reading comprehension skills and were analyzed using inferential statistics with the assistance of the SPSS 21.0 program. Through this research, the researchers are expected that the online magazine-based reading workshop model has an effect on the improvement of the fourth-grade students' reading comprehension skills.

Technologies have acquired strategic importance and have been defined as unprecedented educational tools. In this study, we analysed the use that 1,488 Spanish adolescents made of five tools (i.e. search engines, wikis, blogs, podcasts and instant messaging), and the impact that use of these tools had on their academic performance in science, mathematics, Spanish language and English. To this end, we explored frequency of use, time spent, purpose, place of use and level of satisfaction for each of the tools, as well as academic performance in the four subjects analysed, using the HEGECO instrument. Results revealed differential patterns in the use of technologies according to purpose, and in academic performance according to sex, age and use of the tools. Adolescents used search engines and wikis to carry out academic tasks, and podcasts for entertainment. In relation to academic performance, females presented better mean performance in linguistic subjects, and younger adolescents did so in all the subjects analysed. In relation to use of tools, the use of search engines was associated with better performance in science, Spanish language and English, while the use of podcasts was associated with better performance in mathematics. The implications of these results are discussed and evaluated.

There is a dearth of research on the perceptions of faculty members in educational leadership regarding open access publications. This reality may exist because of a lack of funding for educational leadership research, financial obstacles, tenure demands, or reputation concerns. It may be that there are simply fewer established open access publishers with reputable impact factors to encourage publication by members in the field. The current study seeks to answer the following question: "What are the perceptions of educational leadership faculty members in UCEA about open access publishing?" The results are based on responses from 180 faculty members in the field of educational leadership.

Since the 1960s-1970s, the implementation of Computer-Assisted Language Learning concept has contributed to the progress made on Foreign Language Learning (FLL) in numerous ways. It has enabled the teachers and language learners to enrich the language learning process with improved interactivity with certain learning materials and gave rise to several opportunities for the development of applications in further implementation of the concept. At the present time, it is possible to witness a wide range of software and hardware developed for CALL that are able to present innovative and creative means for CALL which are, to some extent, proven successful in engaging foreign language learners with greater effectiveness. This research has been prepared in efforts of gaining a proper insight on utilization of the technological means and opportunities in CALL, and with aims to comprise an idea regarding the effects of the mentioned technologies which are and were used on CALL. In other words, this research presents an overview regarding history and typology of CALL and also types of programs in CALL.

Following a rapid development in technology, many information sources are now digitized. Consequently, individuals are expected to demonstrate the skills needed to critically evaluate, synthesize, and effectively use those sources. In this context, information literacy and information technology, especially skills with Web 2.0 tools, have become concepts that directly affect each other's development. This study investigated the information literacy self-efficacy and use of Web 2.0 tools among architectural students in particular. A t-test and ANOVA were performed on the data collected through a questionnaire survey. The results revealed that there was no difference in information literacy self-efficacy according to the participants' gender or duration of internet use but did vary with the level of their knowledge of foreign languages and Web 2.0 tools. In addition, instant messaging systems were the most preferred of the Web 2.0 tools to use for educational purposes. Ranked from most to least preferred, other Web 2.0 tools included Facebook-Twitter, video sharing platforms, blogs, wikis, and podcasts.

Digital and social media have grown exponentially to become highly influential spheres of public communication -- increasingly crowded, contested, and corrupted, and increasingly in need of scholarly engagement. As public debate is conducted more through social and digital media, alternative metrics ('altmetrics') that are generated from social and digital media platforms become important as indicators of impact and engagement. We review the growth of amplifier platforms and the academic and contextual reasons for their growth. Amplifier platforms are defined to distinguish them from traditional media outlets (where the scholarly voice is mediated through and 'gatekept' by journalists, whose editors retain final control), personal blogs (very few of which can be maintained over time) and from social media platforms (where the scholarly voice is accorded no presumptive standing). A significant range of amplifier platforms is canvassed while acknowledging that in Australia, the amplifier platform "The Conversation" plays a central role.

Vocabulary teaching and learning has always been a difficult task for both language teachers and learners since every language learner needs to learn a large number of words for successful communication in the target language. To alleviate the vocabulary learning process, teachers and researchers are looking for new vocabulary learning strategies not only to teach vocabulary easily but also to enhance language learners' vocabulary knowledge as well. Audio-visual materials, as an incidental vocabulary learning strategy, seem to be beneficial in second/foreign language classrooms. The current literature review focuses on audio-visual materials and their effects on vocabulary learning by reviewing the most recent research studies carried out to investigate the effects of this strategy on the enhancement of vocabulary knowledge of the second/foreign language learners. To do this, three 2018 research studies from different international, peer-reviewed journals--Computer Assisted Language Learning, Language Learning & Technology, and Studies in Second Language Acquisition - were selected and discussed. The results of this literature review highlighted the positive effects of implementing audio-visual materials on vocabulary learning. The results also showed that audio-visual materials can help language learners to improve their vocabulary knowledge of the target language. The vocabulary knowledge of the second/foreign language learner can be enhanced incidentally through watching videos and hearing words in meaningful contexts and communication. A brief summary of each research study as well as some guidelines for future research were provided.

Universities have been promoting study abroad programmes for a long time to improve intercultural competence. However, the mere exposure to cultural differences while studying abroad does not ensure intercultural competence, unless study abroad students' reflective processes are explicitly targeted. The article presents the results of a short intervention grounded in the problem-based approach aimed at improving intercultural competence in study abroad students. Students were assigned to three conditions: a video-log condition (in which they have to narrate a critical incident occurred to them), a reflection-induced video-logs (in which they were prompted to reflect on the video-logs produced), and an active control condition. The reflection-induced video-log intervention improved students' perceived proficiency in Italian and perceived opportunities for cultural reflection, but it did not contribute to improve students' applicable and conceptual knowledge of intercultural competence.

Writing formats have expanded beyond the pen to include new technologies, particularly in this era of immediate digital communication. Rehabilitation professionals are not routinely incorporating writing formats using technology, such as texting, keyboard, or tablet interfaces when evaluating and treating adult writing disorders. The purpose of this study was to obtain normative baseline information about the writing behaviors of typical adults across generations. A total of 199 respondents, ages 18-106, provided data on rating importance of format, frequency of use, and ranking of writing activities. Findings indicated that the importance of technology for communication, learning, and work activities exists across the generations (except the centenarian). Written forms of enjoyment, such as crossword puzzles, song lyrics, and story writing, were meaningful to younger as well as older generations. Obtaining client perspectives on writing activities and formats that are personally relevant and meaningful can help the clinician create a more client-based program.

This study utilizes COUNTER 5 data from the University of Dayton (UD) to measure full-text retrievals of e-journal articles from five major academic journal publishers (Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Oxford, Wiley, and Springer). Usage data from these publishers' e-journals within EBSCO is compared to the same content when accessed from publisher platforms such as Wiley Online Library or SpringerLINK. Building on previous studies that have largely focused on links (or referrals) from the library discovery layer to publisher platforms, this study analyzes usage of full text-articles stored within EBSCO Discovery Service and EBSCOhost subject databases to consider how these full-text holdings within EBSCO might affect referrals to publisher platforms. The findings indicate that full-text article holdings within EBSCO are used more often than the same content in publisher platforms, suggesting that UD students and researchers rely heavily on--and likely often start with--EBSCO for their learning and research.

Graduate online learners have specific needs and challenges highlighted in the research on graduate online education. This systematic review examined 271 studies on broader research themes on graduate online education. Publication trends by year and journal outlets were analyzed. Descriptive statistics were tabulated for research context, participants, discipline, methods, and research themes. Among the studies published on graduate online education in this review, 59% were published in the United States, with 32% studied at the master's level and 59% in the education discipline. About 39% of the studies used quantitative methods, while 37% used qualitative methods. Online engagement was the most studied research theme (24%), followed by learner characteristics (13.7%) in graduate online education. Very few studies (5.2%) focused on the organizational level. Implications for online graduate learners, instructors, program directors, administrators, and future research recommendations are provided.

This paper investigates how psychological needs spurring self-determined motivation relate to collective efficacy for flourishing in online learning communities. Self-determination theory posits individuals experience intrinsic motivation to flourish at educational tasks because of targeted satisfaction of the three psychological needs: autonomy, relatedness, and competence. However, studies conducted to investigate collective, technology-assisted learning processes suggest competence and relatedness may play a pivotal role in online community engagement and knowledge-sharing. Moreover, informal gaming experiences may mirror the collaborative skills needed in online educational/professional communities. These insights suggest confidence in one's abilities to contribute to a community, the perception of a strong, supportive social culture in the online classroom, and informal online experiences may lead to self-determined motivation enabling agents in distributed, technology-assisted classrooms to collectively flourish. Little work has been done to examine effects of need satisfaction on collective efficacy in using online technologies. To fill this research gap, we used structural equation modelling to investigate perceptions of 636 undergraduate students enrolled in classes within an education department at a midwestern university employing weekly asynchronous blogging. Our results suggest students' experience with multiplayer gaming, and need satisfaction towards competence and relatedness correlate with higher collective efficacy in technology-assisted classrooms employing discussion forums.

This study investigated the effectiveness of Vlogs on the motivational beliefs of trainee teachers in the practicum period. It also offers their perceptions of Vlogs for professional development. The participants were 54 trainee teachers from a university located in the north-west of Turkey. In this study, a pretest post-test quasi-experimental design with a control group was adopted to test the effects of using Vlogs on motivation. To collect qualitative data, semi-structured interviews were conducted in the experimental group. The results indicated that Vlogs had significantly positive effects on the sub-factors of motivation such as intrinsic goal orientation, control beliefs, self-efficacy, and task value. The experimental group had lower extrinsic goal orientation scores in comparison with the control group. The trainee teachers reported that Vlogs were a potential media not only for self-assessment, reflection, and peer learning but also for the development of techno-pedagogical skills in teacher education along with challenges of their use.

Information and communication technology (ICT) not only improved communication in the 21st century, but it also led to rethinking the facilitation of online learning. University students in the information age have access to the internet, chat rooms, Twitter, and other social media. However, the literature reveals that most students use these technological tools for social and entertainment purposes rather than for learning (Holmfeld et al., 2012), and this contrasts with the perception that students use technology for online learning. At the University of South Africa (UNISA), an open distance and e-learning (ODeL) model, in which learning is mediated through technology, was instituted in 2016 even though there are still challenges to seeing it fully functional. The facilitation of online learning includes cell phones, video cameras, podcasts, and blogs, and UNISA uses a communication platform called myUnisa where academics and students can communicate with each other on a social learning platform that is more formal and controlled. In order to explicate the importance of online learning, the theories in this article will give insight into e-tutors on online training.
