Background/Objectives: Inflammation is a vital response of the immune system, frequently linked to the development and progression of numerous chronic and autoimmune diseases. Targeting inflammation represents an attractive strategy to prevent and treat these pathologies. In this context, many pathways, including pro-inflammatory cytokines secretion, NFκB activation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, inflammasome activation and arachidonic acid metabolism could be highlighted and addressed. Several plant materials have traditionally been used as effective and non-harmful anti-inflammatory agents. However, well-established scientific evidence is lacking, and their mechanisms of action remain unclear. The current article compares the effects of seven plant extracts, including Quercus robur L. (Oak), Plantago lanceolata L. (narrowleaf plantain), Plantago major L. (broadleaf plantain), Helichrysum stoechas L. (immortelle or helichrysum), Leontopodium nivale alpinum Cass. (edelweiss), Medicago sativa L. (alfafa) and Capsella bursa-pastoris Moench (shepherd's purse) on different inflammatory pathways. Results: All of the plant extracts significantly affected ROS production, but their action on cytokine production was more variable. As the Quercus robur extract showed the highest efficacy in our models, it was subsequently assessed on several inflammatory signaling pathways. Quercus robur significantly decreased the secretion of IFNγ, IL-17a, IL-12, IL-2, IL-1β and IL-23 in stimulated human leucocytes, and the expression of TNFα, IL-6, IL-8, IL-1β and CXCL10 in M1-like macrophages. Additionally, a significant reduction in PGE2 secretion, COX2, NLRP3, caspase1 and STAT3 expression and NFκB p65 phosphorylation was observed. Conclusions: Our results clearly indicate that Quercus robur has a potent anti-inflammatory effect, making it a promising candidate for both the treatment and prevention of inflammation and related diseases, thereby promoting overall well-being. Purpose: The aim of this study was to test the effects of chair-based exercise programs on salivary stress hormones, physical fitness, and functional autonomy of institutionalized older women. Method: In total, 47 participants (80 ± 8.04 years old) were recruited and allocated into three groups: chair-based aerobic exercises (CAE, n = 19), chair-based elastic-band strength exercises (CSE, n = 15), and a control group (CG, n = 13). A 14-week exercise intervention was done for the CAE and CSE groups, two times per week, in no consecutive days. Members of the CG did not participate in any type of exercise but kept their regular lifestyle. Fear of falling, autonomy, physical fitness, salivary cortisol, and alpha-amylase levels were assessed before and after the intervention. Results: The CAE group improved upper and lower body strength, agility--dynamic balance, and autonomy, with fear of falling decreasing significantly (p < 0.05, moderate effect size). Both exercise groups showed a trend toward an increase in salivary alpha-amylase levels (CAE = 43%, d = 0.31, and CSE = 44%, d = 0.41). Conclusion: Both exercise programs were able to improve functional autonomy, even in elders older than 80 years of age. It might be interesting to investigate the effectiveness of combining both aerobic and strength exercises in a unique protocol. The modulation effect of exercise in the hormonal responses needs to be further explored.

Stressful situations lead to change in or damage to the central nervous system, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and autonomic function. Techniques for reducing stress such as yoga and mindfulness meditation have been reported to improve emotional regulation and mindfulness skill, as well as stress response. Mindfulness skill relies on intense focus to quiet the mind and bring concentration to the present moment. The present study was a randomized control trial to investigate the effects of an 8-week training program (three 45-minute sessions/week, one session with an instructor and two sessions as home practice) in mindfulness meditation or in yoga on stress and related variables in healthy people. Forty-four healthy participants were randomly allocated to one of three groups: a mindfulness group (n = 16), a yoga group (n = 13), and a control group (n = 15). The yoga training significantly modified heart rate variability, contributing to decreased relative power of the low-frequency band; the relative power of the high-frequency band increased after training. The mindfulness meditation training significantly improved mindfulness skill and concentration performance. In the present study, yoga was associated with increased heart rate variability and mindfulness meditation was associated with an increase in mindfulness skill and concentration performance. Inflammation is a vital protective response to threats, but it can turn harmful if chronic and uncontrolled. Key elements involve pro-inflammatory cells and signaling pathways, including the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, NF-κB, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Ampelopsis grossedentata, or vine tea, contains dihydromyricetin (DHM) and myricetin, which are known for their various health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the impact of an extract of A. grossedentata leaves (50 µg/mL) on inflammation factors such as inflammasome, pro-inflammatory pathways, and macrophage polarization, as well as its antioxidant properties, with a view to combating the development of low-grade inflammation. Ampelopsis grossedentata extract (APG) significantly decreased ROS production and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFNγ, IL-12, IL-2, and IL-17a) in human leukocytes. In addition, APG reduced LPS/IFNγ -induced M1-like macrophage polarization, resulting in a significant decrease in the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6, along with a decrease in the percentage of M1 macrophages and an increase in M0 macrophages. Simultaneously, a significant decrease in NF-κB p65 phosphorylation and in the expression of inflammasome genes (NLRP3, IL-1β and Caspase 1) was observed. The results suggest that Ampelopsis grossedentata could be a promising option for managing inflammation-related chronic diseases. We investigated whether psychological and physical stress induced by training or competition influence the secretory immune system among 12 highly trained young female gymnasts. Salivary levels of secretory IgA and cortisol responses to gymnastic training session or competition were assessed a total of 10 times, immediately before and after two training sessions which had different intensities and just before and after a major competition. These parameters were also measured on two non-training days. The Brunel Mood Scale was also used to assess the gymnasts's overall mood on each test day. IgA:Prorein ratio was calculated. Significant decreases in this ratio were found after each exercise session, related to the physiological and psychological stress induced by exercise. Over the 5-mo. training period the presession IgA:Protein ratios were unchanged. Gymnasts registered any episodes of upper respiratory tract infection. Bouts of exercise induce transitory effects on the immune system in relation to the workload and the stress induced by the exercise without any relation to increased susceptibility to illness in children.
