Abstract

The southern African subcontinent and its surrounding oceans accommodate globally unique ecoregions, characterized by exceptional biodiversity and endemism. This diversity is shaped by extended and steep physical gradients or environmental discontinuities found in both ocean and terrestrial biomes. The region’s biodiversity has historically been the basis of life for indigenous cultures and continues to support countless economic activities, many of them unsustainable, ranging from natural resource exploitation, an extensive fisheries industry and various forms of land use to nature-based tourism. Being at the continent’s southern tip, terrestrial species have limited opportunities for adaptive range shifts under climate change, while warming is occurring at an unprecedented rate. Marine climate change effects are complex, as warming may strengthen thermal stratification, while shifts in regional wind regimes influence ocean currents and the intensity of nutrient-enriching upwelling. The flora and fauna of marine and terrestrial southern African biomes are of vital importance for global biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration. They thus deserve special attention in further research on the impacts of anthropogenic pressures including climate change. Excellent preconditions exist in the form of long-term data sets of high quality to support scientific advice for future sustainable management of these vulnerable biomes.

Abstract

Fronts, eddies, and upwelling shape larval fish habitats in the Canary Current Ecosystem. In the last five years, five sea-going expeditions have been undertaken to investigate the influence of these ocean processes on the life of fishes and their early life stages. The use of different sampling techniques (e.g. midi/maxi multinet, GULF VII, and CTD) allowed us to understand horizontal and vertical larval fish distribution patterns. Frontal zones that function as natural barrier for plankton drift were identified enabling the formation of spatially segregated larval fish assemblages. Mesoscale eddies compensated an offshore drift of water masses during the upwelling process retaining fish larvae at the shelf break. An upwelling intensity driven spatio-temporal niche partitioning was observed between larval round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) and larval European sardine (Sardina pilchardus). While climate models predict a change of the upwelling intensity in upwelling ecosystems, we suggest that dominance relationships of small pelagic fishes will fluctuate according to upwelling intensity variation. The results of our studies improve the understanding of how fishes avail the dominant physical features in upwelling ecosystems and aid to comprehend population dynamics.

Abstract

ICAWA : International Conference AWA, Lanzarote, ESP, 17-/04/2018 - 20/04/2018; An analysis based on a multi-decadal physical–biogeochemical hindcast simulation (1980-2009) was conducted to characterize the drivers of the spatial distribution of phytoplankton biomass and production in the north-west (NW) African upwelling system. To that end, a comparative box analysis representing homogeneous sub-regions in the NW African upwelling system has been conducted. The sub-regions have been defined using the near-surface horizontal circulation patterns. In each box, we analysed the dynamics of primary productivity and nutrients with regard to advective and diffusive matter fluxes at the boundaries and local biological production and/or uptake. The nature and variability of the matter exported from the coastal margin to the adjacent open ocean were also subsequently depicted. This variability of the primary production may impact the distribution and abundance of fish populations, and their associated fisheries, on a large range of timescales.

Abstract

Bottom trawlers land around 19 million tons of fish and invertebrates annually, almost one-quarter of wild marine landings. The extent of bottom trawling footprint (seabed area trawled at least once in a specified region and time period) is often contested but poorly described. We quantify footprints using high-resolution satellite vessel monitoring system (VMS) and logbook data on 24 continental shelves and slopes to 1,000-m depth over at least 2 years. Trawling footprint varied markedly among regions: from < 10% of seabed area in Australian and New Zealand waters, the Aleutian Islands, East Bering Sea, South Chile, and Gulf of Alaska to > 50% in some European seas. Overall, 14% of the 7.8 million-km2 study area was trawled, and 86% was not trawled. Trawling activity was aggregated; the most intensively trawled areas accounting for 90% of activity comprised 77% of footprint on average. Regional swept area ratio (SAR; ratio of total swept area trawled annually to total area of region, a metric of trawling intensity) and footprint area were related, providing an approach to estimate regional trawling footprints when highresolution spatial data are unavailable. If SAR was =0.1, as in 8 of 24 regions, therewas > 95% probability that > 90%of seabed was not trawled. If SAR was 7.9, equal to the highest SAR recorded, there was > 95% probability that >70% of seabed was trawled. Footprints were smaller and SAR was =0.25 in regions where fishing rates consistently met international sustainability benchmarks for fish stocks, implying collateral environmental benefits from sustainable fishing. © 2018 National Academy of Sciences. Abstract

The short form cultural intelligence scale (SFCQ) is a theory-based, short measure of cultural intelligence that captures the original theoretical intent of a multifaceted culture general form of intelligence that is related to effective intercultural interactions. Validity is established with 3526 participants in five language groups. Results provide evidence for construct and criterion-related validity of the measure, and indicate that cultural intelligence is a single latent factor reflected in three intermediate facets of cross cultural knowledge, skills and cultural metacognition. The measure is modestly related to but distinct from emotional intelligence and personality, and it correlates positively with several indicators of multicultural experience. Abstract

Mapping trawling pressure on the benthic habitats is needed as background to support an ecosystem approach to fisheries management. The extent and intensity of bottom trawling on the European continental shelf (0–1000 m) was analysed from logbook statistics and vessel monitoring system data for 2010–2012 at a grid cell resolution of 1 1 min longitude and latitude. Trawling intensity profiles with seabed impact at the surface and subsurface level are presented for 14 management areas in the North-east Atlantic, Baltic Sea and Mediterranean Sea. The footprint of the management areas ranged between 53–99% and 6–94% for the depth zone from 0 to 200 m (Shallow) and from 201 to 1000 m (Deep), respectively. Largest footprints per unit landings were observed off Portugal and in the Mediterranean Sea. Mean trawling intensity ranged between 0.5 and 8.5 times per year, but was less in the Deep zone with a maximum intensity of 6.4. Highest intensities were recorded in the Skagerrak-Kattegat, Iberian Portuguese area, Tyrrhenian Sea and Adriatic Sea. Bottom trawling was highly aggregated. For the Shallow zone the seabed area where 90% of the effort occurred comprised between 17% and 63% (median 36%) of the management area. Footprints were high over a broad range of soft sediment habitats. Using the longevity distribution of the untrawled infaunal community, the seabed integrity was estimated as the proportion of the biomass of benthic taxa where the trawling interval at the subsurface level exceeds their life span. Abstract

This project has attempted to evaluate the effectiveness of the fisheries management measure known as the “Plaice Box” (PB) for the conservation of plaice and other species of marine organisms in the south-eastern North Sea. The study provides an inventory of existing information and collects new material on the effects of the PB on the conservation of plaice and the impact of the PB on various components of the commercial fishing fleets. Based on an analysis of key processes that affect the impact of the PB, modifications will be explored to improve the positive effect on the conservation of plaice and other species of marine organisms, including catches and bycatches of other marketable fish. An economic assessment of the consequences of those modifications, in terms of their cost-effectiveness, and implications for profitability of the activity is presented. Finally, the data requirements for future evaluations of the effects of the PB on conservation is discussed.

Abstract

Macroramphosus spp. (Centriscidae, Macroramphosinae) are the most abundant demersal fishes on the Great Meteor Seamount (GMR, subtropical NE Atlantic, 30degrees N, 28.5degrees W). Previous investigations evidenced the existence of two species that differed in morphology and diet. A deep-bodied benthos feeding type (b-type), M. scolopax, could be significantly distinguished from a slender planktivorous type (p-type), M. gracilis. In this study we investigate whether dietary differences are also significant. Based on a novel null model termed ortho-RA3 in accordance with Lawlor (1980), the analysis of dietary overlap revealed significant differences between feeding types for two of three hypotheses that were tested, i.e., between-group differences and within-group differences for M. gracilis. Reasons for the failure of the third hypothesis (within-group differences for M scolopax) are discussed. Our results 4 reinforce the hypothesis of two competing species of snipefishes at GMR

Abstract

One specimen of the largetooth cookiecutter shark Isistius plutodus was caught in the northeastern Atlantic at 43°58' N; 28°32' W. This is the first record of this rare species in the northeastern Atlantic and the northernmost point of its known distribution.
