We investigated the effects of static and dynamic fatigue on motor synergies, focusing on their hierarchical control. Specifically, we examined whether changes in fatigue influence the central nervous system's ability to preserve movement stability. In addition to exploring the direct impact of fatigue on motor synergies, we also analyzed its effects at two distinct levels of hierarchical control, aiming to elucidate the mechanisms by which fatigue alters motor coordination and stability. Thirteen healthy, young and right-handed male participants took part in the study. Participants performed a bilateral accurate force production task under static and dynamic fatigue conditions at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction level with elbow flexors. Muscle activity level were collected from five muscles of each limb: biceps brachii, brachialis, brachioradialis, flexor carpi radialis, and flexor carpi ulnaris. The results revealed distinct effects of fatigue on isometric force production in the elbow joint tasks. On the higher level of hierarchy control of synergies, there were non-significant effects of different types of fatigue on movement performance, however, on the lower level we observed a strong effect of fatigue on forming motor synergies. There was no significant difference between the type of applied fatigue protocol on force and muscle activity data, nevertheless, the contribution of involved muscles to the task has changed. Our findings indicate that the central nervous system employs specific strategies to counteract fatigue and preserve movement stability during performance. However, the precise mechanisms by which variability at lower levels of hierarchical control influence higher levels remain unclear, highlighting a critical gap in our understanding of motor coordination under fatigue. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the anticipation of a mechanical perturbation applied to the arm during a reach-to-grasp movement elicits anticipatory adjustments in the reach and grasp components. Additionally, we aimed to evaluate whether anticipatory adjustments in the upper limb might be global or specific to the direction of the perturbation. Methods: Thirteen healthy participants performed reach-to-grasp with perturbations randomly applied to their dominant limb. Participants were presented with three types of trials: unperturbed (control), trials perturbed in a predictable manner (either Up or Down), or perturbed in a partially predictable manner (knowledge about the perturbation but not its specific direction). EMG activity of 16 muscles, as well as the kinematics of wrist, thumb, and index finger, were acquired and analyzed. Results and discussion: When the perturbation was expected, EMG activity of the triceps and pectoralis major muscles significantly increased about 50 – 200 ms before the perturbation onset. Peak acceleration of the reach was significantly higher and occurred earlier relative to control trials. Similar adjustments were observed in the grasp kinematics, reflected as significantly shorter time to peak aperture velocity and acceleration, as well as in increased activity of flexor and extensor digitorum 100–200 ms before perturbation onset. In summary, our data demonstrate that knowledge of an upcoming perturbation of reach during reach-to-grasp action triggers anticipatory adjustments not only in the muscles controlling the reach component, but also in those controlling grasp. Introduction: Ankle stiffness is a factor that contributes to maintaining balance and counteracts the forces of gravity as the body sways. Stability while standing quietly depends on its value. Intrinsic ankle stiffness refers to (i) the passive resistance provided by the structural components of the ankle joint itself, such as the ligaments and joint capsules, (ii) a property of the joint that remains constant regardless of the external forces applied, (iii) a characteristic that affects the stability and control of the ankle joint. The aim is to present compilation of the results published in the researchers' work makes it possible to analyze changes in the value of ankle stiffness for perturbations of different amplitude. Material and Methods: The review is based on articles identified through searches of Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus. There were no restrictions on the publication date. The Boolean search strategy was used. Results: Ankle stiffness changes with increasing sway amplitude. Its values are greater for perturbations of smaller amplitudes and, therefore, cannot be represented by a single value. Passive stiffness reduces sway and allows time for the active system to respond. The interaction of these two mechanisms ensures the stability of an upright posture. Conclusions: Ankle stiffness is a parameter that can be applied in clinical practice. The exact determination of the range of stiffness values is a useful tool to define a motor organization/reorganization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS) among children with cerebral palsy (CP) who were living in Tanzania. Two physiotherapy trainees, each blinded to the other's test findings, independently administered the TCMS to 38 children with CP (16 female; M age = 7.2, SD = 4.8 years) twice over sessions separated by a 30-day interval. We assessed internal consistency and intra/inter-rater reliability using Cronbach's alpha and the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), respectively. We examined measurement error through Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) and Minimal Detectable Change (MDC). We assessed construct validity with Spearman's correlation coefficient between the TCMS and both the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and the Manual Ability Classification System (MACS). We found a frank floor effect. Internal consistency (α = 0.945) and reliability indices were excellent for the total scale (ICC for intra-rater reliability = 0.985, inter- reliability = 0.997) and for each sub-scale score. We found low values of SEM (1.7 points) and MDC (4.8 points). Construct validity was supported by moderate and strong correlations between the TCMS and the GMFCS and MACS in this sample. We conclude that the psychometric properties of the TMCS support its clinical and research use for youth with CP in low-income settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors used two analyses developed within the framework of the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis to quantify multimuscle synergies during voluntary body sway: analysis of intertrial variance and analysis of motor equivalence with respect to the center of pressure (COP) trajectory. Participants performed voluntary sway tasks in the anteroposterior direction at 0.33 and 0.66 Hz. Muscle groups were identified in the space of muscle activations and used as elemental variables in the synergy analyses. Changing mechanical and vision feedback-based constraints led to significant changes in indices of sway performance such as COP deviations in the uninstructed, mediolateral direction and indices of spontaneous postural sway. In contrast, there were no significant effects on synergy indices. These findings show that the neural control of performance and of its stability may involve different control variables and neurophysiological structures. There were strong correlations between the indices of motor equivalence and those computed using the intercycle variance analysis. This result is potentially important for studies of patients with movement disorders who may be unable to perform multiple trials (cycles) at any given task, making analysis of motor equivalence of single trials a viable alternative to explore changes in stability of actions. The electromyography (EMG) signals have been widely utilized in human-robot interaction for extracting user hand/arm motion instructions. A major challenge of the online interaction with robots is the reliable EMG recognition from real-time data. However, previous studies mainly focused on using steady-state EMG signals with a small number of grasp patterns to implement classification algorithms, which is insufficient to generate robust control regarding the dynamic muscular activity variation in practice. Introducing more EMG variability during training and validation could implement a better dynamic-motion detection, but only limited research focused on such grasp-movement identification, and all of those assessments on the non-static EMG classification require supervised ground-truth label of the movement status. In this study, we propose a framework for classifying EMG signals generated from continuous grasp movements with variations on dynamic arm/hand postures, using an unsupervised motion status segmentation method. We collected data from large gesture vocabularies with multiple dynamic motion phases to encode the transitions from one intent to another based on common sequences of the grasp movements. Two classifiers were constructed for identifying the motion-phase label and grasptype label, where the dynamic motion phases were segmented and labeled in an unsupervised manner. The proposed framework was evaluated in real-time with the accuracy variation over time presented, which was shown to be efficient due to the high degree of freedom of the EMG data.
