Abstract

In order to develop 100% bio-based high-grade epoxy composites, in this study, bio-based epoxy thermosets and hemp slivers are processed and characterized by different technologies. Epoxy resins are synthesized from the diglycidylether of Eugenol, extracted from cloves. They are cured with bio-based acid anhydrides. The physicochemical properties of the resulting epoxy resins are characterized using thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and nanoindentation. The mechanical properties of hemp fibres extracted from the slivers are also determined using tensile tests. After their processing and characterization, these bio-based constituents are then used to manufacture unidirectional composites by thermocompression. Composite specimens are tested under 3-points bending. Preliminary results show a stiffness of about 9 GPa and a strength of approximately 170 MPa for a fibres volume fraction of 22%. These mechanical properties are promising since they make this material competitive to substitute petroleum-based composites in secondary structural applications.

Abstract

This paper is the first thorough analysis of takini, a hallucinogen used by the shamans of several peoples in Suriname, French Guiana, and the region east of the Para in Brazil. The drug is contained in the latex of the Brosimum acutifolium tree, and until now, its psychotropic properties appeared inconsistent with the more general medicinal uses of the tree in the surrounding region. Our chemical and botanical studies reveal that the active ingredient of takini is bufotenine; and that this compound is only contained in the subspecies Brosimum acutifolium Huber subsp. acutifolium C.C. 46. Viscoelastic Properties of Plant Fibers: Dynamic Analysis and Nanoindentation Tests.

Abstract

It is now established that plant fibers are suitable reinforcements to replace or to complete synthetic fibers for composite applications. They have many well-known advantages such as being renewable, biodegradable and having high specific mechanical properties and intrinsic damping properties that can impart attractive benefits to composite materials. When compared to glass and carbon fibers reinforced polymer composites, PFCs exhibit generally higher damping properties. This is commonly attributed to the polymeric nature of the fibers. It could also result from their hierarchical structure and microstructural specificities. Indeed, damping in composite materials is induced by several microscopic level mechanisms related to the viscoelasticity of both matrix and fibers, but also by the fiber/matrix interface and the friction between fibers inside bundles or between layers. The presence of lumen could also play a role. At this stage, the damping source is not well identified, and the design and the optimization of composites, for structural applications, are then difficult. A better knowledge of the physical phenomena involved is therefore necessary. A first approach is proposed using dynamic nanoindentation. Different dynamic loading paths are applied to plant fiber composites. Flax fibers are tested in situ in the composite. Indents were performed using predefined grids. The sinusoidal signal of force and penetration depth as a function of time are post-processed to ensure a reliable determination of the loss factor. Finally, damping maps are plotted. Results allow the variation of elastic and damping properties in the fiber/fiber and fiber/matrix interphases to be quantified and thus to shed new light on the origins of damping in PFCs. In a second time, a specific experimental set-up is developed based on the analysis of the transverse (bending) vibratory response of a fiber clamped at one end, free at the other one. Both forced (using a piezoelectric actuator) or free (using a release of a static constraint) movements can be generated. The loss factor is then identified from the vibration displacement by tracking the fiber free-end recorded with a high-speed camera. 47. Assessing Hafting Adhesive Efficiency in the Experimental Shooting of Projectile Points: A new Device for Instrumented and Ballistic Experiments.

Abstract

With the aim of providing better control of shooting experiments performed with replicas of prehistoric projectiles, we have conducted an instrumental archaeology study on the efficiency of prehistoric projectile points by placing emphasis on their adhesion and ballistic characteristics. In order to avoid any reproducibility problems, hafting adhesives were made with controlled mixtures of commercial rosin (also called 'colophany') and beeswax added as a plasticizer. An original experimental device has been developed to instrument a bow, allowing the control of both the trajectories and the velocities of the different shoots. In the course of an experimental programme on Sauveterrian microliths from the Mesolithic period of the South of France, the experimental system was applied to composite replica projectile tips of Mesolithic hunters. Arrows being shot at transparent targets were filmed in order to evaluate the penetration length and residual damage. Interestingly, this study reveals that the properties of the mixture are highly dependent on the velocity of the arrows. It was shown that-contrary to previous experiments that usually used a mixture in which rosin predominates- the most efficient adhesive is made of 70 wt% beeswax with only 30 wt% rosin. This result is of great importance for improving further shooting experiments and overcoming the problems frequently mentioned due to the loss of the flint armatures before they reach the animal target, or at least before penetration. When using this appropriate mixture, the lateral armatures are resistant to most of the shots. Experiments performed on real boars' flesh have also shown that the presence of lateral microliths allows the laceration inflicted on the target to be enlarged.
