1. Chiral active systems near a substrate: Emergent damping length controlled by fluid friction

Abstract

Chiral active fluids show the emergence of a turbulent behavior characterized by multiple dynamic vortices whose maximum size is specific for each experimental system. This is in contrast to hydrodynamic simulations in which the size of vortices is only limited by the system size. We propose and develop an approach to model the effect of friction close to a surface in a particle based hydrodynamic simulation method in two dimensions, in which the friction coefficient can be related to the system parameters and to the emergence of a damping length. This length limits the size of the emergent vortices, and influences other relevant system properties such as the actuated velocity, rotational diffusion, or the cutoff of the energy spectra. Comparison of simulation and experimental results show a good agreement which demonstrates the predictive capabilities of the approach, which can be applied to a wider class of quasi-two-dimensional systems with friction., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We study the orientational dynamics of heavy silica microrods flowing through a microfluidic channel. Comparing experiments and Brownian dynamics simulations we identify different particle orbits, in particular in-plane tumbling behavior, which cannot be explained by classical Jeffery theory, and we relate this behavior to the rotational diffusion of the rods. By constructing the full, three-dimensional, orientation distribution, we describe the rod trajectories and quantify the persistence of Jeffery orbits using temporal correlation functions of the Jeffery constant. We find that our colloidal rods lose memory of their initial configuration in about a second, corresponding to half a Jeffery period., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

MuB is a non-specific DNA-binding protein and AAA+ ATPase that significantly influences the DNA transposition process of bacteriophage Mu, especially in target DNA selection for transposition. While studies have established the ATP-dependent formation of MuB filament as pivotal to this process, the high-resolution structure of a full-length MuB protomer and the underlying molecular mechanisms governing its oligomerization remain elusive. Here, we use cryo-EM to obtain a 3.4-Å resolution structure of the ATP(+)-DNA(+)-MuB helical filament, which encapsulates the DNA substrate within its axial channel. The structure categorizes MuB within the initiator clade of the AAA+ protein family and precisely locates the ATP and DNA binding sites. Further investigation into the oligomeric states of MuB show the existence of various forms of the filament. These findings lead to a mechanistic model where MuB forms opposite helical filaments along the DNA, exposing potential target sites on the bare DNA and then recruiting MuA, which stimulates MuB's ATPase activity and disrupts the previously formed helical structure. When this happens, MuB generates larger ring structures and dissociates from the DNA. Here, Zhao et al. use cryo-EM to show how MuB forms helical filaments around DNA. 35. Role and mechanism of specialized pro-resolving mediators in obesity-associated insulin resistance.

Abstract

With the changing times, obesity has become a characteristic epidemic in the context of the current era. Insulin resistance (IR) is most commonly caused by obesity, and IR is a common basis of the pathogenesis of many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and type 2 diabetes, which seriously threaten human life, as well as health. A major pathogenetic mechanism of obesity-associated IR has been found to be chronic low-grade inflammation in adipose tissue. Specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) are novel lipid mediators that both function as "stop signals" for inflammatory reaction and promote inflammation to subside. In this article, we summarize the pathogenesis of obesity-associated IR and its treatments and outline the classification and biosynthesis of SPMs and their mechanisms and roles in the treatment of obesity-associated IR in order to explore the potential of SPMs for treating metabolic diseases linked with obesity-associated IR. Abstract

We report an entropy-driven orientational hopping transition in a magnetically confined colloidal Janus rod. In a magnetic field, the sedimented rod randomly hops between horizontal and vertical states: the latter state comes at a substantial gravitational cost at no reduction of magnetic potential energy. The probability distribution over the angles of the rod shows that the presence of an external magnetic field leads to the emergence of a metastable vertical state separated from the ground state by an effective barrier. This barrier does not come from the potential energy but rather from the vast gain in phase space available to the rod as it approaches the vertical state. The loss of rotational degree of freedom that gives rise to this effect is a statistical mechanical analogue of the phenomenon of gimbal lock from classical mechanics., Comment: To be published in Physical Review Letters

48. Measuring Spherical and Nonspherical Binary Particles: Mixing and Segregation in a Rotating Drum Using Machine Learning-Assisted Image Processing

Abstract

Rotating drum experiments on binary mixtures of plastic spheres with wood spheres, wood cylinders, plastic cylinders, and wood cubes were investigated, respectively. A high-resolution camera was employed to record the flow behaviors of the binary mixtures. A machine learning-assisted image processing method was developed to segment the particles of different shapes, and its superiority was demonstrated by comparing the results with the pixel and artificial counting methods. This method was used to analyze the images recorded from binary mixture experiments to explore the effects of rotating speed, particle shape, and density differences on mixtures’ radial and axial mixing and segregation behavior. The results show that the particle shape and density difference significantly affect the resolution angle of the binary mixture containing plastic spheres. In the radial direction, the degree of mixing of the binary mixtures containing wood spheres and cubes is not sensitive to speed. The degree of mixing of the binary mixture containing cylindrical particles increases linearly with the rotating speed within a specific range. The particle shape significantly affects the radial segregation of the binary mixtures. In contrast, the rotating speed has a negligible effect on the radial segregation of binary mixtures containing wood spheres, cylinders, and cubes.
