The publication Horizons of Interest is conceived as a theoretical material for deeper understanding of visual imagination and art creation. The monograph opens the interdisciplinary dialogue not only about the image and its related visuality, but also technical processing and educational processes both in art and with art. The aim is to explore the contemporary relationship between education and visual communication in contexts which emphasise intercultural strategies and promote active citizenship. The publication combines the theoretical frame from the field of art, philosophy, sociology, education, and the positive practice in art museums and intercultural studies. The interdisciplinary feature of the texts allows us to address intercultural issues supporting the idea of being an active part of the interpretation of artistic languages. The use of diversified languages and media allows the broadening of interdisciplinary channels and modes of dialogue, provided that there is effective accessibility (both physical and cultural) to the various types of visual-artistic communication.

ContextThe risk stratification of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is crucial in clinical decision making. The most widely accepted method to assess risk of recurrent/persistent disease is described in the 2015 American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines. However, recent research has focused on the inclusion of novel features or questioned the relevance of currently included features.ObjectiveTo develop a comprehensive data-driven model to predict persistent/recurrent disease that can capture all available features and determine the weight of predictors.MethodsIn a prospective cohort study, using the Italian Thyroid Cancer Observatory (ITCO) database (NCT04031339), we selected consecutive cases with DTC and at least early follow-up data (n = 4773; median follow-up 26 months; interquartile range, 12-46 months) at 40 Italian clinical centers. A decision tree was built to assign a risk index to each patient. The model allowed us to investigate the impact of different variables in risk prediction.ResultsBy ATA risk estimation, 2492 patients (52.2%) were classified as low, 1873 (39.2%) as intermediate, and 408 as high risk. The decision tree model outperformed the ATA risk stratification system: the sensitivity of high-risk classification for structural disease increased from 37% to 49%, and the negative predictive value for low-risk patients increased by 3%. Feature importance was estimated. Several variables not included in the ATA system significantly impacted the prediction of disease persistence/recurrence: age, body mass index, tumor size, sex, family history of thyroid cancer, surgical approach, presurgical cytology, and circumstances of the diagnosis.ConclusionCurrent risk stratification systems may be complemented by the inclusion of other variables in order to improve the prediction of treatment response. A complete dataset allows for more precise patient clustering.

Nell’agosto del 1961, a Zagabria per la mostra nove tendencije, si riunì un gruppo di artisti, provenienti da diverse aree culturali: italiana, francese e tedesca. Le neoavanguardie così costituitesi erano maturate nello stesso ambiente culturale, quello della rivista “Čovjek i Prostor” (Uomo e spazio), che era stato un laboratorio anche per l’attività critica di Vera Horvat Pintarić (1926) e principalmente di Matko Meštrović (1933) e Radoslav Putar (1929-1994). Osservando i nuovi fermenti artistici di ambito italiano, francese e tedesco, questi ultimi due studiosi contribuirono, ognuno con un peso diverso, a elaborare l’ideologia originaria della manifestazione internazionale di nove tendencije.

Rationale: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) are debilitating diseases associated with divergent histopathological changes in the lungs. At present, due to cost and technical limitations, profiling cell types is not practical in large epidemiology cohorts (n>1000). Here, we used computational deconvolution to identify cell types in COPD and IPF lungs whose abundances and cell type-specific gene expression are associated with disease diagnosis and severity., Methods: We analyzed lung tissue RNA-seq data from 1026 subjects (COPD, n=465; IPF, n=213; control, n=348) from the Lung Tissue Research Consortium. We performed RNA-seq deconvolution, querying thirty-eight discrete cell-type varieties in the lungs. We tested whether deconvoluted cell-type abundance and cell type-specific gene expression were associated with disease severity., Results: The abundance score of twenty cell types significantly differed between IPF and control lungs. In IPF subjects, eleven and nine cell types were significantly associated with forced vital capacity (FVC) and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO), respectively. Aberrant basaloid cells, a rare cells found in fibrotic lungs, were associated with worse FVC and DLCO in IPF subjects, indicating that this aberrant epithelial population increased with disease severity. Alveolar type 1 and vascular endothelial (VE) capillary A were decreased in COPD lungs compared to controls. An increase in macrophages and classical monocytes was associated with lower DLCO in IPF and COPD subjects. In both diseases, lower non-classical monocytes and VE capillary A cells were associated with increased disease severity. Alveolar type 2 cells and alveolar macrophages had the highest number of genes with cell type-specific differential expression by disease severity in COPD and IPF. In IPF, genes implicated in the pathogenesis of IPF, such as matrix metallopeptidase 7, growth differentiation factor 15, and eph receptor B2, were associated with disease severity in a cell type-specific manner., Conclusion: Utilization of RNA-seq deconvolution enabled us to pinpoint cell types present in the lungs that are associated with the severity of COPD and IPF. This knowledge offers valuable insight into the alterations within tissues in more advanced illness, ultimately providing a better understanding of the underlying pathological processes that drive disease progression.
