Abstract

Muon identification is of paramount importance for the physics programme of LHCb. In the upgrade phase, starting from Run 3 of the LHC, the trigger of the experiment will be solely based on software. The luminosity increase to $2\times10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ will require an improvement of the muon identification criteria, aiming at performances equal or better than those of Run 2, but in a much more challenging environment. In this paper, two new muon identification algorithms developed in view of the LHCb upgrade are presented, and their performance in terms of signal efficiency versus background reduction is shown.

Abstract

The theorems of Kozlov and Sullivan characterize Gibbs measures as measures with positive continuous specifications. More precisely, Kozlov showed that every positive continuous specification on symbolic configurations of the lattice is generated by a norm-summable interaction. Sullivan showed that every shift-invariant positive continuous specification is generated by a shift-invariant interaction satisfying the weaker condition of variation-summability. These results were proven in the 1970s. An open question since that time is whether Kozlov's theorem holds in the shift-invariant setting, equivalently whether Sullivan's conclusion can be improved from variation-summability to norm-summability. We show that the answer is no: there exist shift-invariant positive continuous specifications that are not generated by any shift-invariant norm-summable interaction. On the other hand, we give a complete proof of an extension, suggested by Kozlov, of Kozlov's theorem to a characterization of positive continuous specifications on configuration spaces with arbitrary hard constraints. We also present an extended version of Sullivan's theorem. Aside from simplifying some of the arguments in the original proof, our new version of Sullivan's theorem applies in various settings not covered by the original proof. Abstract

We formulate and prove a very general relative version of the Dobrushin-Lanford-Ruelle theorem which gives conditions on constraints of configuration spaces over a finite alphabet such that for every absolutely summable relative interaction, every translation-invariant relative Gibbs measure is a relative equilibrium measure and vice versa. Neither implication is true without some assumption on the space of configurations. We note that the usual finite type condition can be relaxed to a much more general class of constraints. By "relative" we mean that both the interaction and the set of allowed configurations are determined by a random environment. The result includes many special cases that are well known. We give several applications including (1) Gibbsian properties of measures that maximize pressure among all those that project to a given measure via a topological factor map from one symbolic system to another; (2) Gibbsian properties of equilibrium measures for group shifts defined on arbitrary countable amenable groups; (3) A Gibbsian characterization of equilibrium measures in terms of equilibrium condition on lattice slices rather than on finite sets; (4) A relative extension of a theorem of Meyerovitch, who proved a version of the Lanford--Ruelle theorem which shows that every equilibrium measure on an arbitrary subshift satisfies a Gibbsian property on interchangeable patterns., Comment: 37 pages and 3 beautiful figures

Abstract

Since 2015, with the restart of the LHC for its second run of data taking, the LHCb experiment has been empowered with a dedicated computing model to select and analyse calibration samples to measure the performance of the particle identification (PID) detectors and algorithms. The novel technique was developed within the framework of the innovative trigger model of the LHCb experiment, which relies on online event reconstruction for most of the datasets, reserving offline reconstruction to special physics cases. The strategy to select and process the calibration samples, which includes a dedicated data-processing scheme combining online and offline reconstruction, is discussed. The use of the calibration samples to measure the detector PID performance, and the efficiency of PID requirements across a large range of decay channels, is described. Applications of the calibration samples in data-quality monitoring and validation procedures are also detailed.

Abstract

Background: Ameloblastoma is a locally destructive benign odontogenic tumor. While the neoplastic cells of conventional ameloblastoma can infiltrate the connective tissue and bone, in unicystic ameloblastoma the epithelium is encapsulated. The mechanisms driving ameloblastoma's bone resorption remains unclear. Methods: RNA sequencing (RNA‐seq) was performed in a discovery cohort of conventional ameloblastoma, and pathway enrichment analysis was carried out. mRNA levels of MMP13, a gene associated with bone resorption, were assessed using RT‐qPCR in a larger cohort of conventional ameloblastoma and in unicystic ameloblastoma. Zymogram gels and the immunoexpression profile of collagenase 3 (encoded by MMP13 gene) were evaluated as well. Results: Enriched pathways related to bone mineralization and upregulation of MMP13 were observed in ameloblastomas. Collagenolytic activity of collagenase 3 was detected in the tumor lysates. Collagenase 3 immunopositivity was observed in ameloblastomatous epithelium infiltrating the fibrous capsule of unicystic ameloblastoma. At the tumor–bone interface, collagenase 3 expression was detected in stromal cells, osteoblasts, and osteocytes. 44. Striated Duct Adenoma: A Case Report and a Scoping Review.

Abstract

Introduction: Striated duct adenoma (SDA) is a rare benign salivary gland tumor with a recently described genetic signature. Recurrent oncogenic mutations affecting the IDH2 gene differentiate SDA from its primary differential diagnosis of canalicular adenoma. Here, we report a case of SDA affecting the parotid gland with IDH1/2 mutation-specific immunohistochemical positivity. Additionally, we provide a scoping review developed according to the Cochrane Methodology and reported following the Joana Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist to synthesize all previously published cases of SDA. The review protocol was registered on the Open Science Framework (OSF) platform (https://osf.io/7mztg). The searches were performed using Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and LILACS, with no date or language limit. Studies were evaluated for eligibility, extracted, and compiled in a narrative form. Seven studies with 20 patients with SDA, including ours, were analyzed. The tumors mainly affected the parotid gland (13/20) in patients with a mean age of 62 years and did not display sex predilection. Swelling was the leading clinical symptom. The mean follow-up duration was 26 months with no recurrence or metastasis after resection. Conclusion: Awareness of the clinicopathological features and the use of IDH1/2 mutation-specific immunohistochemistry are pivotal for the consistent identification of SDA, and assessment for true biological potential will require increased follow-up and scrutiny. Abstract

Targeted therapy has the potential to be used in the neoadjuvant setting for odontogenic tumors, reducing the morbidities associated with major surgery. In this regard, the aim of this study was to summarize the current evidence on the different forms of targeted therapy, effectiveness, and drawbacks of this course of treatment. Four databases were searched electronically without regard to publication date or language. Grey literature searches and manual searches were also undertaken. Publications with sufficient clinical data on targeted therapy for odontogenic tumors were required to meet the criteria for eligibility. The analysis of the data was descriptive. A total of 15 papers comprising 17 cases (15 ameloblastomas and 2 ameloblastic carcinomas) were included. Numerous mutations were found, with BRAF V600E being most common. Dabrafenib was the most utilized drug in targeted therapy. Except for one case, the treatment reduced the size of the lesion (16/17 cases), showing promise. Most of the adverse events recorded were mild, such as skin issues, voice changes, abnormal hair texture, dry eyes, and systemic symptoms (e.g., fatigue, joint pain, and nausea). It is possible to reach the conclusion that targeted therapy for ameloblastoma and ameloblastic carcinoma may be a useful treatment strategy, based on the findings of the included studies. This view from practice presents participatory methods in the ‘Leadership, Communication, and Climate Change’ program in the context of environmental conservation and indigenous community development in the Vaupés region of the Colombian Amazon. The primary goal of the program is to contribute to the formulation of indigenous community development projects that enhance environmental protection and improve the quality of life for participating communities, while respecting and promoting the cultural identity of indigenous peoples. The ‘Leadership, Communication, and Climate Change’ program aims to foster an exchange of knowledge between academics, environmental practitioners, and indigenous leaders from the region of Vaupes, in the eastern boundaries of the Colombian Amazon. Abstract

Key Clinical Message: Whole‐exome sequencing (WES) analysis of an expansive case florid cemento‐osseus dysplasia were reported for the first time. Also, the new potential candidate genes were reported to expand our knowledge about their molecular pathogenesis. We report a case of expansive florid cemento‐osseus dysplasia in a 32‐year‐old female patient who presented an expansive tumoral lesion in the anterior mandible. As florid cemento‐osseus dysplasia have only been molecularly investigated using targeted‐sequencing, fragments of the lesion were collected and subjected to molecular investigation using WES to assess somatic mutations as well as copy number alterations. No gains and losses of chromosomal arms or segments longer than 1 Mb were detected. Our findings revealed a pathogenic stopgain variant at the KIF5C gene, a stoploss variant at MAPK10, and missense SNV at COL6A2 at DCDC1, suggesting potential candidate genes associated with florid cemento‐osseus dysplasia. Abstract

SMA actuators are a group of lightweight actuators that offer advantages over conventional technology and allow for simple and compact solutions to the increasing demand for electrical actuation. In particular, an increasing number of SMA torsional actuator applications have been published recently due to their ability to supply rotational motion under load, resulting in advantages such as module simplification and the reduction of overall product weight. This paper presents the conceptual design, operating principle, experimental characterization and working performance of torsional actuators applicable in active rudder in aeronautics. The proposed application comprises a pair of SMA torsion springs, which bi-directionally actuate the actuator by Joule heating and natural cooling. The experimental results confirm the functionality of the torsion springs actuated device and show the rotation angle of the developed active rudder was about 30° at a heating current of 5 A. After the design and experiment, one of their chief drawbacks is their relatively slow operating speed in rudder positioning, but this can be improved by control strategy and small modifications to the actuator mechanism described in this work.
