Switched reluctance motor (SRM) provide a potential candidate for electric vehicle (EV) applications due to rigid structure, potentially low production cost, the absence of permanent magnets, excellent power-speed characteristics, and high reliability and robustness. This paper aims to review the current research on the design, winding topologies, converter topologies, and control methods of switched reluctance motors (SRMs). Torque ripple and vibration are the main drawbacks of SRMs, which constrain their application. To conquer these drawbacks, multi-phase SRMs (MSRMs), optimum structure, and control methods of SRMs have been utilized over the past decades. In this paper, MSRMs with multiple combinations of stator/rotor poles and winding arrangements are investigated. Different converter topologies are compared, and a full-bridge converter is suitable for SRMs used in EVs. Torque sharing function, direct torque control, and direct instantaneous torque control are the main control methods to reduce the torque ripple of SRMs, which have been comprehensively summarized.

Purpose This paper aims to propose an effective method to verify poles polarities of switched reluctance motors (SRMs). Different from the ways of detection poles polarities by permanent magnet in SRMs, the difference of self-inductance between different winding connections is used to verify the pole polarity. Design/methodology/approach First, the winding connections with the forward and reverse series are proposed. The magnetic circuit models are established to analyze the flux linkage of different winding connections. Then, according to the difference of inductance characteristics, including the self-inductance and the mutual inductance affected by the adjacent poles, it is theoretically feasible to verify the polarity of each pole. Finally, the proposed method is verified by the simulation and experiment on a six-phase SRM. Findings First, compared to the reverse series, the forward series can produce larger self-inductance when one phase is excited at the same current excitation, which can be used to verify the poles polarities of one phase with different winding connection. Second, the mutual inductance can be used to distinguish the winding connections. Third, the difference of the maximum self-inductance of the winding, which is composed of two adjacent windings, can be used to verify the polarities of the adjacent poles. Originality/value This paper proposes an effective method to verify poles polarities of SRMs.

The effect of the winding connections on the static torque in six-phase switched reluctance motors (SRMs) is investigated in this paper. Different winding connections for the six-phase SRMs are shown and compared. Under the conditions of different winding connections, the self-inductance and mutual inductance of a six-phase SRM are compared and analyzed. Six-phase SRMs can be running in two-phase excitation mode and three-phase excitation mode, and in these two modes, the static torque characteristics with different poles polarities arrangements are compared and analyzed. The comparison of the static torque in a six-phase SRM with different winding connections is obtained by the Maxwell 2D and experiments. Based on the results, an optimal winding connection mode for starting stage of the six-phase SRMs is proposed.

Purpose Inductance, torque and iron loss are the key parameters of switched reluctance motors for belt-driven starter generators. This paper aims to present the analysis of a segmented rotor switched reluctance motor (SSRM) with three types of winding connections for hybrid electric vehicle applications by using a two-dimensional finite element method. Design/methodology/approach The rotor of the studied SSRM consists of a series of discrete segments, while the stator is made up of exciting and auxiliary teeth. First, the concept and structures of the different winding connections are introduced. Then, the magnetic flux path of the three types of winding connections for the SSRM is described. Second, the magnetic flux distributions in the three parts, i.e. the stator yoke, the stator tooth and the rotor segment, are described in detail to calculate the iron losses. Third, three SSRMs with the different winding arrangements are analyzed and compared to evaluate the distinct features of the studied SSRM. The analysis and comparison mainly include self-inductances, mutual inductances, phase currents, output torque and iron loss. Findings It is found that the self-inductances of the three types of winding connections are almost equal, and only the SSRM1 has a positive mutual inductance. In addition, the current waveforms of SSRM1 and SSRM2 are regular. However, it is irregular in SSRM3. It is shown that SSRM1 has better characteristics, such as higher output torque, high power density, lower torque ripple and iron loss. Originality/value This paper proposes and analyzes three novel winding connections for the SSRM to provide guidance for enhancing the output torque and reducing the iron loss to achieve high efficiency.

In this paper, a new nonlinear lumped parameter equivalent circuit model is proposed to calculate the core losses of a novel 16/10 segmented rotor switched reluctance motor (SSRM) for belt-driven starter generators. The model investigates the hysteresis, eddy current and anomalous losses by using the method of energy conservation. Four parameters are introduced in the proposed model to consider the effects of saturation and leakage flux in SSRM. They are the incremental leakage inductance, the incremental equivalent winding resistance, the incremental magnetizing inductance, and the incremental equivalent core-loss resistance. This model can overcome the hysteresis effects of winding resistance and leakage inductance on the current, and improve the accuracy of the parameters. To illustrate the advantages of the proposed model, an experiment platform is developed. Experimental results show that the proposed model can significantly improve the calculation accuracy of core losses of the SSRM. The accuracy is better than the conventional Epstein frame method. The proposed core-loss model and analysis method can be applied to other kinds of switched reluctance motors.

Different from conventional SRMs, the stator of the proposed SSRM consists of two types of stator poles, i.e., exciting and auxiliary poles, and the rotor is constructed from a series of discrete segments. The topology and operation principle of this proposed SSRM are illustrated firstly, and then the design rules are listed. In addition, the finite element method (FEM) is employed to get the static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed SSRM. Finally, the simulation results are presented to show the validity of the proposed SSRM for BSGs.

The stator of proposed SSRM consists of two types of stator poles: exciting pole and auxiliary pole, and the rotor of proposed SSRM is made up of a series of discrete segments. Firstly, the concept of the conventional SRM and proposed machine is presented. Secondly, the design rules of proposed SSRM are described. Finally, the finite element method (FEM) is employed to get the static characteristics of the proposed SSRM, including the magnetic flux distribution, magnetic flux density, inductance characteristic, torque characteristic and continuous torque. Result shows that the torque ripple of proposed SSRM is low.
