Abstract

In this present study, experimental infestations of the definitive hosts of cattle Sarcocystis were realized to identify the species existing in our regions. For that purpose, 200 g of a mixture of oesophagi and diaphragms infested by cysts of Sarcocystis were administered to 7 dogs, 2 cats and 2 Magot monkeys. Only dogs excreted oocystes and sporocystes of Sarcocystis cruzii, although cysts with thick wall were present in broyats.

Abstract

Ovine meat is a major protein source in Algeria. Hygiene of food stuffs is an important concern in food production since food poisoning is a danger for public health. Two slaughterhouses were investigated in this study. Ten carcasses were sampled in each slaughterhouse during 4 consecutive weeks. The amount of total aerobic mesophilic flora and of Enterobacteriaceae was calculated on the 80 carcasses. The results were evaluated regarding european regulation 2001/471/EC. For both slaughterhouses, the total aerobic mesophilic bacteria counts 4.84 log10 CFUs/cm2 were close to the upper limit (5 log10CFUs/cm2). The Enterobacteriaceae counts for the two slaughterhouses were 4.38 log10CFUs/cm2 and 3.30 log10 CFUs/cm2, respectively. These values were above the upper acceptable limit (2.5 log10 CFUs/cm2). In conclusion, the ovine carcasses, in Algeria, seem to be heavily contaminated by bacteria constituting a risk of food poisoning. Key words: Ovine slaughterhouse, hygiene, carcass, contamination.

Abstract

In Algeria, cattle fasciolosis is a parasitic pathology very frequently met at slaughterhouses level; however its prevalence on a national scale is unknown. To this end, we conducted a study on the prevalence of fasciolosis to Fasciola hepatica in 202 bovine breedings in the area of Mitidja (northern Algerian center), from February to May 2005. 1,870 serums were analyzed by an ELISA method and 1,870 faeces underwent coproscopic analyses. No eggs of Fasciola hepatica were detected by the coprologic analysis. The serologic analysis highlighted an infestation of the bovines by Fasciola hepatica with a average prevalence of 18.54% within two localities (Dar El beida and Blida) with a prevalence of 0%.
