Observations of crystal-like ordering of fine particles in plasmas were first reported in 1994, when we succeeded to observe it by growing carbon fine particles in a methane plasma. Video cameras and Mie-scattering ellipsometry were applied for the analyses of fine particles and their crystal ordering. 3D and 2D crystal structures were observed for smaller and larger particles, respectively. The former structures were fcc, fco, and bct, but bcc structure was not observed. The result is due to the fact that the rearrangement from fcc to fco or bct occurs with both constant particle density in horizontal planes and constant interplane vertical distance. Behaviors of fine particles under microgravity were observed and analyzed using ready-made and injected fine particles. Its experimental result showed that the resultant force composed of electrostatic and ion drag forces pushes fine particles outward from the center forming a void.

The size and refractive index of particles can be analyzed through the measurement of polarization state of scattered light. The change of polarization state in Mie scattering has been represented by ellipsometric parameters, Ψ and Δ, like the reflection ellipsometry. The analysis method is called Mie-scattering ellipsometry. By in-process Mie-scattering ellipsometry, the growth processes of carbon particles in argon plasma and in methane plasma were analyzed. It was found that carbon particles grow by coagulation in argon plasma, while they grow by carbon coating in methane plasma. It is also shown that imaging Mie-scattering ellipsometry has the potential for the easier confirmation of optical adjustment from a long distance, as well as for the analysis of spatial distribution of particle size.

We defined the context area of the context manager defined by the HL7 CCOW. We developed the libraries to enable the EUA and PSA functions. We modified six existing information systems to use the EUA/PSA libraries. These modifications require the considerable effort, but otherwise we achieved good seamless operation. Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)(ISAS)), Sagamihara, Kanagawa Japan, Fine particle plasmas serve as a unique and otherwise-difficult-to-realize system where effects of strong coupling can be analyzed directly on the particle level. A drawback is the large mass of fine particles and the microgravity environment enables us to perform ideal experiments. On the International Space Station (ISS), the facility PK-3Plus for fine particle plasma experiments has been operated by Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) and Joint Institute for High Temperatures (JIHT). As the next-generation facility, the launch of PK-4 has been planned and experimental tests have been done on the ground and on the air plane (parabolic flights). The purpose of this Working Group is to propose appropriate themes for PK-4. The main part of PK-4 is a long straight discharge tube where the plasma with the cylindrical symmetry can be generated. By the activity of previous years, we have analyzed the behavior of strongly coupled fine particles with the cylindrical symmetry such as formation of Coulomb crystals by the theory and simulations. Microgravity experiments of fine-particle plasma were carried out and fine-particle ordering and behavior have been analyzed in the change of gravitational conditions. Fine particles aligned in radial directions were observed under microgravity, while they were aligned in the vertical direction under gravity.
