Professor Emeritus is an honourary title recognising distinguished academic service. It is conferred to selected faculty members of a university upon their retirement. This exploration of the role of professor emeritus on campuses aims to stimulate debate about how universities could use their knowledge and skills as mentors for students, faculty, and campus wide initiatives. Numerous studies have documented the transition difficulties that health care students experience when they move into paid professional practice. Addressed in this paper are three questions that challenge post-secondary educators. (1) What might a successful transition look like for a "new" health care professional? (2) What individual actions could we, as educators, initiate to promote successful transitions for our students? Should we accept mentoring as an effective strategy to support students' transition, and if so (3) What might demonstrate effective mentorship? The evidence suggests that the process of transition into professional life for health care workers may be facilitated when post-secondary education experiences include the development of strong professional networks, the provision of supportive learning opportunities, supports for developing self-confidence in their new roles are provided and mentoring continues after graduation. Promoting health and wellness is a focus of social entrepreneurs within the health care professions. With the educational offerings of social entrepreneurship expanding within the health care programs of post-secondary institutions, assessing its current knowledge state is essential. Decisions about how and what to teach should be grounded in the best available evidence. The purpose of this preliminary scoping review was to provide an overview of best practices in curriculum content and methods of teaching social entrepreneurship for students in the health care professions. Publication, if successful, is exhilarating! Aspiring academic scholars recognize the contribution that peer-reviewed publications make to their careers. It identifies their engagement with their discipline. For students, the benefits of publishing a paper include bolstering their levels of confidence and knowledge and demonstrating to them how they can contribute to their chosen profession. However, inexperience can cause trepidations of the unknown or negative emotions when the writing and publication process goes amiss. Described in this paper is the background, structure, content, and limitations of a writing workshop the authors initiated during a recent conference. The purpose of the workshop was to aid both academic colleagues and students in publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals. It was designed as an introductory interactive session to stimulate conversation about the publishing experience.

A legislatively regulated and self-regulating profession, such as nursing, holds its members (registered nurses) accountable to the public it serves for the continuous development of the competencies they profess to hold. A requirement for competency is lifelong learning and can be evidenced through certification. In this paper, the interrelationship of lifelong learning, certification, and registered nursing practice is examined. Strategies used to support certification through a lifelong learning approach are described.

The purpose of this descriptive case study is to promote understanding of the University of the Third Age (U3A) as an approach to facilitating lifelong learning opportunities for and with older adults. This case study is specific to the development of a University of the Third Age in Calgary (U3A Calgary). The benefits of lifelong learning for older adults and communities are described. The benefits are followed by the articulation of the work done by the project team in moving the U3A Calgary from an idea to reality.

In this study, the experiences of seven female health professionals learning online are examined and, in this context, the implications for online course designs and future research are discussed. The instruments of data collection include individual telephone interviews, journals written by the participants during online courses, and e-­mails exchanged by the participants and researcher. The principles of qualitative research are integrated into the process of collecting and analyzing the data. Participants identified lack of face­-to-­face interaction and overload of work as major challenges to learning online. Increase in confidence and the opportunity to belong to a community of learners were cited as rewards of learning online. In addition, the participants identified preferences for contextual and experiential learning, and for learning environments that foster collaboration. Participants agree that interacting with other classmates, building local support, and developing a mentoring relationship with instructors are key aspects of a successful learning experience

Delirium is a complex neurocognitive manifestation of an underlying medical or surgical abnormality such as substance abuse, infection, sepsis, or organ failure. A recognized risk factor for delirium is advanced age (age >65 years). The projected demographic changes over the next 2 decades suggest that the number of aging adults will grow dramatically, and emergency nurses will see an increasing number of older patients manifesting the wide range of neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with delirium. An examination of 5 commonly used delirium assessment tools was undertaken specific to clinical features, use, scoring, findings, advantages, and disadvantages. Numerous factors contribute to the lack of effective delirium recognition. However, emergency nurses, with educational support, can successfully use the delirium assessment tools to recognize delirium. Emergency nurses face challenges in recognizing delirium. One key challenge for many of these nurses is the appropriate use of assessment tools suitable for the ED setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transformational leadership (TL) is a highly discussed approach in the literature for many professions. Likewise, the TL approach continues to be explored in a myriad of nursing contexts to demonstrate its advantages for practice and client health. The tension between custody and care is particular to correctional nursing practice, such as the correctional priorities of safety and security that often override caring‐focused nursing practice. Presented herein, is information relating to correctional nursing leadership as found in the minimal, available literature; and hypothetical examples of how correctional nursing leaders can use TL are provided. Measuring the influence of TL on practice and offender health can assist in determining if this approach is an appropriate "fit" for the correctional nursing context. The dearth of literature regarding correctional nursing leadership must be addressed to advance this subspecialty of nursing and promote offender health. The intent is not to argue that TL is the only applicable leadership approach for this subspecialty of nursing.
