The Science of Teaching Reading (STR) has received increasing attention as states continue to pass educational policy initiatives grounded in STR research. One major change resulting from STR policies is the heavy focus on the systematic instruction of phonics. Texas in particular has seen sweeping changes to their preservice teacher (PST) certification requirements, resulting in teacher education programs (TEPs) having to adjust their literacy preparation coursework in response to these changes. This shift leaves questions surrounding the potential displacement of other literacy practices in TEPs, such as the use of children's literature. Standalone children's literature courses have been a staple in TEPs historically; however, these courses have been slowly eliminated in other states as STR policies are adopted. Therefore, the present study uses content analysis methodology to understand how children's literature is positioned alongside the newly adopted STR policies in Texas. Through the examination of course descriptions and syllabi of literacy coursework, this content analysis seeks to determine the number of TEPs maintaining a standalone children's literature course and the primary focus of these courses. Additionally, the current study investigates how children's literature is being positioned in other literacy coursework to teach STR principles. The implications can provide TEPs as well as teacher educators insight on the repositioning of children's literature within coursework, as children's literature can serve a valuable role in the teaching of reading.

We investigate the emergence, mutation profile, and dissemination of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.214.2, first identified in Belgium in January 2021. This variant, featuring a 3-amino acid insertion in the spike protein similar to the Omicron variant, was speculated to enhance transmissibility or immune evasion. Initially detected in international travelers, it substantially transmitted in Central Africa, Belgium, Switzerland, and France, peaking in April 2021. Our travel-aware phylogeographic analysis, incorporating travel history, estimated the origin to the Republic of the Congo, with primary European entry through France and Belgium, and multiple smaller introductions during the epidemic. We correlate its spread with human travel patterns and air passenger data. Further, upon reviewing national reports of SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks in Belgian nursing homes, we found this strain caused moderately severe outcomes (8.7% case fatality ratio). A distinct nasopharyngeal immune response was observed in elderly patients, characterized by 80% unique signatures, higher B- and T-cell activation, increased type I IFN signaling, and reduced NK, Th17, and complement system activation, compared to similar outbreaks. This unique immune response may explain the variants epidemiological behavior and underscores the need for nasal vaccine strategies against emerging variants.

Deficit ideologies permeate urban spaces particularly when mostly Black and Brown students attend neighborhood schools. Wealth concentrated in suburban areas further perpetuates stereotypes of urban as deficient, but empirical data has yet to interrogate these ideas. Using the National Household Education Survey and regression analysis of variance, this research determines the relationship between parents' satisfaction with their child's school and school location (rural, suburban, urban). Then, using race as a moderator, this study aims to ascertain if there is a relationship between parental satisfaction by race and urbanicity of the school their child attends. Implications address the systemic and structural components that contribute to deficit ideologies.

Increasing evidence has shown that implicit learning shapes visuospatial attention, yet how such learning interacts with top-down, goal-driven attention remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between task goals and selection history using a location probability learning (LPL) paradigm. We tested whether a top-down spatial cue facilitates or interferes with the acquisition of implicit LPL. In a visual search task, participants were asked to give precedence to one of four, spatially cued, quadrants of the screen. Unbeknownst to them, there was an underlying uneven spatial probability in which the target appeared disproportionately often in the cued quadrant (37.5%) and a second, uncued quadrant (37.5%). To assess what participants had learned, neutral, uncued testing trials with an equal target location probability (25%) were used. Results revealed faster search times in the cued and the uncued high-probability quadrants compared to the two low-probability quadrants and these fast search times remained prevalent in the neutral testing blocks. Importantly, LPL was comparable between the cued and uncued locations in the testing blocks, suggesting that the spatial cue neither facilitated nor interfered with LPL. These results support the dual-system view of attention, revealing parallel systems supporting both goal-driven and experience-guided attention.

TMEM16F is a calcium-activated phospholipid scramblase and nonselective ion channel, which allows the movement of lipids bidirectionally across the plasma membrane. While the functions of TMEM16F have been extensively characterized in multiple cell types, the role of TMEM16F in the central nervous system remains largely unknown. Here, we sought to study how TMEM16F in the brain may be involved in neurodegeneration. Using a mouse model that expresses the pathological P301S human tau (PS19 mouse), we found reduced tauopathy and microgliosis in 6- to 7-mo-old PS19 mice lacking TMEM16F. Furthermore, this reduction of pathology can be recapitulated in the PS19 mice with TMEM16F removed from neurons, while removal of TMEM16F from microglia of PS19 mice did not significantly impact tauopathy at this time point. Moreover, TMEM16F mediated aberrant phosphatidylserine exposure in neurons with phospho-tau burden. These studies raise the prospect of targeting TMEM16F in neurons as a potential treatment of neurodegeneration.

Texas is home to a burgeoning linguistically diverse population, which has contributed to the exponential growth of bilingual education programming across the state. One program type, two-way dual language (TWDL), has become a popular enrichment model of bilingual education and has received increased attention and funding at the state level. While bilingual education was originally intended to serve linguistically diverse, primarily Latinx, students, there is a growing body of research that suggests the rapid growth of TWDL has come to serve primarily white, affluent, English-dominant students. The present study sought to contribute to this research by examining the locations of TWDL within two major cities in Texas: San Antonio and Austin. This tale of two cities employed a critical race spatial analysis to describe TWDL locational patterns within San Antonio and Austin based on neighborhood demographics including race/ethnicity and socioeconomics. Findings suggest that access to TWDL in each city is based on differing factors, with the socio-historical contexts of San Antonio and Austin playing a major role in the accessibility of TWDL today. Implications for policy makers, city leaders, and district decision-makers are considered.

We sequenced and comprehensively analysed the genomic architecture of 98 fluorescent pseudomonads isolated from different symptomatic and asymptomatic tissues of almond and a few other Prunus spp. Phylogenomic analyses, genome mining, field pathogenicity tests, and in vitro ice nucleation and antibiotic sensitivity tests were integrated to improve knowledge of the biology and management of bacterial blast and bacterial canker of almond. We identified Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, P. cerasi, and P. viridiflava as almond canker pathogens. P. syringae pv. syringae caused both canker and foliar (blast) symptoms. In contrast, P. cerasi and P. viridiflava only caused cankers, and P. viridiflava appeared to be a weak pathogen of almond. Isolates belonging to P. syringae pv. syringae were the most frequently isolated among the pathogenic species/pathovars, composing 75% of all pathogenic isolates. P. cerasi and P. viridiflava isolates composed 8.3 and 16.7% of the pathogenic isolates, respectively. Laboratory leaf infiltration bioassays produced results distinct from experiments in the field with both P. cerasi and P. syringae pv. syringae, causing significant necrosis and browning of detached leaves, whereas P. viridiflava conferred moderate effects. Genome mining revealed the absence of key epiphytic fitness-related genes in P. cerasi and P. viridiflava genomic sequences, which could explain the contrasting field and laboratory bioassay results. P. syringae pv. syringae and P. cerasi isolates harboured the ice nucleation protein, which correlated with the ice nucleation phenotype. Results of sensitivity tests to copper and kasugamycin showed a strong linkage to putative resistance genes. Isolates harbouring the ctpV gene showed resistance to copper up to 600 μg/ml. In contrast, isolates without the ctpV gene could not grow on nutrient agar amended with 200 μg/ml copper, suggesting ctpV can be used to phenotype copper resistance. All isolates were sensitive to kasugamycin at the label-recommended rate of 100μg/ml.

Lascar volcano, located in northern Chile, is among the most active volcanoes of the Andean Central Volcanic Zone (CVZ). Its activity culminated in the last major explosive eruption in April 1993. Lascar andesites which erupted in April 1993 have a phase assemblage composed of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, Fe–Ti oxides, and rhyolitic glass. To better constrain storage conditions and mechanisms of magmatic differentiation for andesitic magmas in a thick continental crust, crystallization experiments were performed in internally heated pressure vessels at 300 and 500 MPa, in the temperature (T) range of 900–1050 °C, at various water activities (aH2O) and oxygen fugacities (logfO2 between QFM+1.5 and QFM+3.3 at aH2O =1; QFM is quartz–fayalite–magnetite oxygen buffer). The comparison of experimental products with natural phase assemblages, phase compositions, and whole-rock compositions was used to estimate magma storage conditions and to reconstruct the magma plumbing system. We estimate that Lascar two-pyroxene andesitic magmas were stored at 975±25 °C, 300±50 MPa, and logfO2 of QFM+1.5±0.5, under H2O-undersaturated conditions with 2.5 wt % to 4.5 wt % H2O in the melt. The geochemical characteristics of the entire suite of Lascar volcanics indicates that a fractionating magmatic system located at a depth of 10–13 km is periodically replenished with less evolved magma. Some eruptive stages were dominated by volcanic products resulting most probably from the mixing of a mafic andesitic magma with a felsic component, whereas compositional variations in other eruptive stages are better explained by crystal fractionation processes. The relative importance of these two mechanisms (mixing vs. crystal fractionation) may be related to the amount and frequency of magma recharge in the reservoir.

This study utilizes quantitative content analysis (QCA) and deductive qualitative approach (DQA) grounded in Ruiz's orientations of language planning to understand the landscape of bilingual educational research. This QCA included targeted counts from bilingual journal articles (n = 102) covering methodology, participants, region, and bilingual program. DQA used coding methods to infer whether programs maintained a positive or negative iteration of bilingualism. The QCA suggests that articles published are centered on qualitative methodologies, conducted in elementary dual-language classrooms, and concentrated in the northeastern and western US. The DQA demonstrates programs maintain a language-as-resource orientation. These findings provide important implications for researchers studying bilingual education.

The rapid growth of social media popularity and consequently social media marketing is creating a challenge in terms of the appropriate teaching strategy. Advances in technology are racing ahead of clear terminology. The definitions of Public Relations (PR) and Advertising are being widened to encompass more digital activities and this turf war is causing confusion within the industry, the academic world, and the classroom. This article addresses the need for more research on teaching social media marketing from a strategic perspective based on Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) objectives. It explores the use of the Paid/Owned/Earned Media (POEM) framework as a form of engaged pedagogy and part of the Active Blended Learning framework. Adopting a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, 40 student applications of the POEM framework were analyzed, and the results indicate that it enables students to identify activities within an integrated campaign and their impact on the customer journey. These results were supported by a qualitative analysis of the views of three experienced educators in this field. It is proposed that the application of classifications, such as Paid, Owned, and Earned media, are more useful when teaching social media marketing within IMC than the classifications of Advertising and PR.

The diffusive exchange of major elements in Na-series tephrite–phonolite diffusion couples with compositions relevant to the Canary Islands magmatism was determined at 300 MPa and variable H2O concentrations (0.3 wt % to 3.3 wt %), temperatures (1150 to 1300 °C), and fO2 levels (NNO−1.5 to NNO+1.7). Composition-dependent effective binary diffusion coefficients were determined from concentration–distance profiles. Results show a wide range of diffusivities for different cations, consistently following the sequence Na ≫ Al ≫ K ≥ Mg = Fe = Ca > Si > Ti, with a mild diffusivity contrast (0.2–0.8 log units) between tephritic and phonolitic melts. Na is the fastest component, with diffusivities falling ∼1.0 log units above those of Si for any given condition. An anomalously fast Al diffusion is observed, with DAl falling ∼0.4 log units above Si and ∼0.6 log units below Na, suggesting a prevalence of Al–alkali coupling across our range of run conditions. The relationships between log D and H2O content in melt for all cations in an intermediate composition are strongly nonlinear and can be fitted using an exponential function with a convergence in diffusion coefficients for different temperatures with increasing H2O content. Thus, Arrhenius analyses result in a decrease in activation energies from 222–293 kJ mol−1 at 1.7 wt % H2O to 48–112 kJ mol−1 at 3.0 wt % H2O. These results provide new data on chemical interdiffusion in highly alkaline Na-rich melts and suggest that H2O content plays a key role in increasing the chemical efficiency of magma mixing at low temperatures. The obtained dataset is used to test chemical controls of magma mixing in the El Abrigo ignimbrite, Tenerife, where banded pumices involving basanitic–tephritic to phonolitic magmas are common in several compositionally bimodal ignimbrite units.

Abstract Oxide heterostructures exhibit a vast variety of unique physical properties. Examples are unconventional superconductivity in layered nickelates and topological polar order in (PbTiO3)n/(SrTiO3)n superlattices. Although it is clear that variations in oxygen content are crucial for the electronic correlation phenomena in oxides, it remains a major challenge to quantify their impact. Here, we measure the chemical composition in multiferroic (LuFeO3)9/(LuFe2O4)1 superlattices, mapping correlations between the distribution of oxygen vacancies and the electric and magnetic properties. Using atom probe tomography, we observe oxygen vacancies arranging in a layered three-dimensional structure with a local density on the order of 1014 cm−2, congruent with the formula-unit-thick ferrimagnetic LuFe2O4 layers. The vacancy order is promoted by the locally reduced formation energy and plays a key role in stabilizing the ferroelectric domains and ferrimagnetism in the LuFeO3 and LuFe2O4 layers, respectively. The results demonstrate pronounced interactions between oxygen vacancies and the multiferroic order in this system and establish an approach for quantifying the oxygen defects with atomic-scale precision in 3D, giving new opportunities for deterministic defect-enabled property control in oxide heterostructures.

Over the past two years teacher education programs across the world have faced unprecedented and unexpected challenges that have led to a rapid reconfiguration of in-person teacher training to online formats. For many, this meant reimagining how practice-based teacher education could be envisioned in an online space and without field experiences in P-12 schools. This collaborative autoethnography critically examined how two teacher educators conceptualized the shift to online education, and their attempts to construct meaningful experiences. Our conclusions highlight virtual modeling and enactments as powerful tools to foster content and pedagogical knowledge, decomposition, collaboration, feedback, and reflection. We posit that carefully crafted practice-based learning opportunities, regardless of delivery mode, benefit preservice teachers.

Interdisciplinary learning does not just happen. One of the great challenges facing interdisciplinary programs is figuring out how to gain collective clarity around program identity (values, principles, and purpose) and make connections between mission-based curricular and co-curricular activities that support interdisciplinary learning for students. The EdD in Interdisciplinary Leadership Program at Creighton University has worked to develop a strategy for strengthening the role of interdisciplinarity both within and beyond the EdD program by establishing a local chapter of the Interdisciplinary Honor Society founded by the Association of Interdisciplinary Studies, Alpha Iota Sigma. This article focuses on the first steps of creating the chapter, as we document the process of making connections between the EdD program and the honor society, including a discussion of the findings from a quality improvement survey completed by some of the first honor society members on how the inaugural year of our membership in the organization helped support their interdisciplinary learning. The objective of this article is to aid interdisciplinary educators in enhancing the life-long interdisciplinary endeavor of their students and alumni by reviewing the scholarship on program identity and co-curricular offerings and by demonstrating the value of specific practices (such as joining the AIS Honor Society as we at Creighton did) that explicitly engage students in interdisciplinary learning outside the classroom.

Background and purpose: Neer 2-part surgical neck fractures are the most common displaced proximal humerus fractures. We aimed to evaluate patient-reported outcome in a consecutive series of older people receiving nonoperative treatment. Methods: This is a single-center prospective cohort study. We included patients aged 60 or above referred to a Danish university hospital. The preregistered protocol followed the recommendations from randomized trials. Patients were followed at the outpatient clinic at 2, 6, and 24 weeks. After 24 weeks, they were evaluated with Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS, 0–48, 48 best) and EuroQoL 5 dimensions, 3 levels (EQ-5D-3L, –0.624 to 1, 1 best). Clinical failure was defined as conversion to surgery or OSS ≤ 24. Population norms were reported to interpret the cohort data, but no formal statistical comparisons between historical cohorts were planned. We used descriptive statistics to report rates and proportions. Results: For 36 months, 268 patients (mean age 76, 79% female) with Neer 2-part surgical neck fractures received non-surgical treatment. After excluding patients with concomitant fractures, dementia, or death, complete follow-up was available for 167 patients. 8 patients (3.0%) had surgery. The mean OSS was 37.2 (SD 8.1), which equals 78% of maximum shoulder function. The norm for the population of the same age and gender was 82%. The mean EQ-5D-3L score was 0.79 (SD 0.16), while the norm for the same-age population was 0.82. 16 (10%) had an OSS score of 24 or below. Conclusion: Non-surgical treatment in older people with Neer 2-part surgical neck fractures resulted after 6 months in patient-reported shoulder function and quality of life close to that of the Danish background population.

Experts trace a congruent trend, pinpointed as originating around the 2010s (Grose, 2020) and only accelerating in the pandemic and its aftermaths: the rise of social media activity relating to parents’ performances of their substance abuse – what this paper defines as “#winemom culture” – with a broader social tendency, a general increase in “rates of high-risk drinking” that lead to such outcomes as “long-term health damage” and “dangers to family” (Macarthur, n.d.). I interrogate the ethics of moralizing against #winemom culture under COVID-19 culture and its aftermaths through exclusively quantitative metrics or surface-level analysis. As with anything coded according to the “momification of the Internet” (Dewey, 2015), such cultures are often disregarded, seen as superficial or in receipt of unchecked judgments. I trace the following question: What can #winemom culture reveal about how parents are processing and communicating within this moment? And begin from the premise that there are as-yet undetermined drivers motivating what appears to be a “zoning out” (Heyes, 2020) in the mediation of #winemom culture production. This project then opens into an analysis of how to actually study digital feminist practices in this current moment, one that is defined by methodological crises surrounding the increasing complexities of enacting justice in social media research. This paper thus serves as a methodological disquisition for feminist researchers attempting to perform ethically just social media research.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the incidence of injuries to the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve (IPBSN) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) with an oblique incision for hamstring graft harvesting. Methods: In total, 59 knees (from 57 patients) were evaluated in the follow-up of ACLR for six months. We drew a horizontal line parallel to the ground, passing through the most medial portion of the surgical incision and another, perpendicular to the first, starting at the tibial tuberosity (TT). We measured the length and angle of the cut, the distances from its most medial point to the perpendicular line, and from the TT to the horizontal line. Skin sensitivity was tested with a brush and the altered sensitivity area was measured. Patients were asked about difficulties in activities daily of living (ADL). Results: A total of 27 knees (45.7%) had sensory disorders, which persisted until the sixth postoperative month in 92.6% of them. The ADL were compromised in one knee (3.7%). No significant differences were found between the groups with and without changes in sensitivity regarding age, affected side, incision angle, or measured distances. The incision size was larger in the group without alteration in sensitivity. Conclusions: An oblique incision did not avoid IPBSN injuries. This condition rarely compromised the ADL. Abstract Individual InAs/GaAs quantum dots are studied by micro-photoluminescence. By varying the strength of an applied external magnetic field and/or the temperature, it is demonstrated that the charge state of a single quantum dot can be tuned. This tuning effect is shown to be related to the in-plane electron and hole transport, prior to capture into the quantum dot, since the photo-excited carriers are primarily generated in the barrier.

Little information is presently available regarding the frequency of the silent shedders of respiratory viruses in healthy sport horses and their impact on environmental contamination. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the detection frequency of selected respiratory pathogens in nasal secretions and environmental stall samples of sport horses attending a multi-week equestrian event during the summer months. Six out of fifteen tents were randomly selected for the study with approximately 20 horse/stall pairs being sampled on a weekly basis. Following weekly collection for a total of 11 weeks, all samples were tested for the presence of common respiratory pathogens (EIV, EHV-1, EHV-4, ERAV, ERBV, and Streptococcus equi ss equi (S. equi)) using qPCR. A total of 19/682 nasal swabs (2.8%) and 28/1288 environmental stall sponges (2.2%) tested qPCR-positive for common respiratory pathogens. ERBV was the most common respiratory virus (17 nasal swabs, 28 stall sponges) detected, followed by EHV-4 (1 nasal swab) and S. equi (1 nasal swab). EIV, EHV-1, EHV-4 and ERAV were not detected in any of the study horses or stalls. Only one horse and one stall tested qPCR-positive for ERBV on two consecutive weeks. All the other qPCR-positive sample results were related to individual time points. Furthermore, only one horse/stall pair tested qPCR-positive for ERBV at a single time point. The study results showed that in a selected population of sport horses attending a multi-week equestrian event in the summer, the frequency of the shedding of respiratory viruses was low and primarily restricted to ERBV with little evidence of active transmission and environmental contamination.
