Objective: To investigate the prevalence of blindness and visual impairment in adults and the related causes in China. Methods: A population-based cross-sectional survey was conducted during 2021 and 2022 among 13 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, including Beijing, Hebei, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Guangdong, Henan, Shanxi, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Chongqing, Yunnan, Sichuan, Heilongjiang, and Liaoning. Respondents were adults aged 18 years and above, and were classified into groups of young adults (18 to 39 years), middle-age adults (40 to 59 years), and the elderly (≥60 years). The examinations included visual acuity measurement, non-contact tonometry, slit-lamp examination, fundus photography, automatic refraction (non-mydriasis), and demographics (questionnaire). The diagnosis and distribution of eye diseases were analyzed. The Cochran-Armitage test was used for statistical processing. Results: A total of 93 123 adults with a mean age of 48.8 years (range, 18 to 101 years) completed the survey, and the response rate was 76.2% (93 123/122 191). There were 37 725 males (40.5%) and 55 398 females (59.5%), while 32 357 (34.75%) were aged 18 to 39, 29 127 (31.28%) were aged 40 to 59, and 31 639 (33.97%) were aged≥60. According to the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in the better eye of 93 123 adults, the blindness, moderate to severe visual impairment (low vision), and mild visual impairment were found in 280, 2 270, and 4 679 patients, respectively. Based on BCVA of the worse eye, the top three causes of blindness and low vision were cataract (1 271/2 982, 42.62%), uncorrected refractive error (433/2 982, 14.52%), and pathological myopia (90/2 982, 3.02%), without considering trauma or other undefined fundus diseases. Conclusions: From 2021 to 2022, the prevalence rates of blindness and low vision in Chinese adults were 0.30% and 2.44%, respectively. Cataract was the primary eye disease leading to blindness and low vision, and pathological myopia became the major cause of irreversible blindness in the population.

Artificial micro/nanomotors using active particles hold vast potential in applications such as drug delivery and microfabrication. However, upgrading them to micro/nanorobots capable of performing precise tasks with sophisticated functions remains challenging. Bubble microthruster (BMT) is introduced, a variation of the bubble-driven microrobot, which focuses the energy from a collapsing microbubble to create an inertial impact on nearby target microparticles. Utilizing ultra-high-speed imaging, the microparticle mass and density is determined with sub-nanogram resolution based on the relaxation time characterizing the microparticle's transient response. Master curves of the BMT method are shown to be dependent on the viscosity of the solution. The BMT, controlled by a gamepad with magnetic-field guidance, precisely manipulates target microparticles, including bioparticles. Validation involves measuring the polystyrene microparticle mass and hollow glass microsphere density, and assessing the mouse embryo mass densities. The BMT technique presents a promising chip-free, real-time, highly maneuverable strategy that integrates bubble microrobot-based manipulation with precise bioparticle mass and density detection, which can facilitate microscale bioparticle characterizations such as embryo growth monitoring., (© 2024 The Author(s). As one of the important blue carbon pools in tropical and subtropical intertidal zones, mangroves are widely distributed along the coast of Guangxi in China. To deeply explore the variations of potential suitable habitats for mangroves in China under the background of climate change, based on remote sensing interpretation data of coastal wetlands in Guangxi, global marine environment and bioclimatic environment data in 2021, we constructed a maximum entropy habitat distribution model to simulate the spatial distribution of potential suitable areas for mangroves and the invasive species, Spartina alterniflora, along the coast of Guangxi, and predicted the patterns under extreme climate change scenarios (SSP5-8.5). The results showed that the interpreted area of mangrove forests along the coastline of Guangxi was 9136.7 hm 2 in 2021, while the predicted area of potential suitable habitat area was 55955.9 hm 2 . Current distribution area of mangroves had basically covered its potential high suitability area and nearly 10% of the moderate suitability area. The current area of S. alterniflora was 1320.4 hm 2 , and the predicted area of potential high suitability area was twice of current area, indicating that there was still a large proportion of high suitability area that was not occupied by S. alterniflora . The most important environmental factors driving the distribution of potential habitats in mangroves were offshore Euclidean distance (62.2%), terrain deviation index (8.7%), average sea surface temperature in the hottest season (6.1%), and seabed terrain elevation (5.6%). The contribution of geographical conditions on mangrove distribution was predominant. Under the climate change scenario (SSP5-8.5), potential suitable area for mangroves would increase by 5.3%, while that for S. alterniflora would decrease by 3.1%. The overlapping proportion of the potential suitable area for mangroves and S. alterniflora was similar under current and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, being 15.2% and 14.5%, respectively. In the future, it is necessary to strengthen the protection and ecological restoration of mangroves along the coast of Guangxi and there is great challenge for preventing further invasion of S. alterniflora .

Objective: To explore the rate of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) resistance to levofloxacin and clarithromycin and the common mutation patterns of resistance genes in Ningxia, and to assess the concordance between phenotypic resistance and genotypic resistance. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Patients diagnosed with Hp infection in 14 hospitals in Ningxia region from February 2020 to May 2022 were retrospectively selected. Hp strains were isolated from gastric biopsy specimens of Hp-infected patients and subjected to phenotypic drug sensitivity testing and detection of resistance genes to analyze the rate of Hp resistance to levofloxacin and clarithromycin and the common mutation patterns of resistance genes in Ningxia region; and the concordance rate and Kappa concordance test were used to assess the concordance between phenotypic resistance and genotypic resistance. Results: A total of 1 942 Hp strains were isolated and cultured, and among the infections, 1 069 cases (55.0%) were male and 873 cases (45.0%) were female, aged (50.0±12.5) years (15-86 years). The rates of Hp resistance to levofloxacin and clarithromycin in Ningxia were 42.1% (818/1 942) and 40.1% (779/1 942), respectively, and the rate of dual resistance to both was 22.8% (443/1 942). The rate of resistance to levofloxacin and clarithromycin of Hp strains from female patients was higher than in male patients (levofloxacin: 50.4%(440/873) vs 35.4%(378/1 069); clarithromycin: 44.4%(388/873) vs 36.6%(391/1 069), both P <0.001). Among the GyrA gene mutations associated with levofloxacin resistance, the differences in mutation rate of amino acid at positions 87 and 91 were statistically significant in both drug-resistant and sensitive strains(both P <0.001), except for Asn87Thr. Hp strains were statistically significant for levofloxacin (Kappa=0.834, P <0.001) and clarithromycin (Kappa=0.829, P <0.001) had good concordance in resistance at the phenotypic and genotypic levels. Conclusion: The resistance of Hp to levofloxacin and clarithromycin in Ningxia region is severe, and there is good consistency between genotypic and phenotypic resistance.

Background: Studies have shown that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can enhance the effect of meniscus repair, but some studies have suggested different views on the role of PRP. Therefore, a meta-analysis was conducted to determine whether PRP can enhance the effect of meniscus repair with respect to pain reduction and improved functionality and cure rate in patients with meniscus injury., Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library Databases, clinicaltrials.gov, and the CNKI Database were searched from their inception till December 1, 2020. The RCTs reporting the outcomes of the Pain Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Lysholm score, healing rate, and adverse events were included. The risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane collaborative tools. The simulated results were expressed with effect size and 95% confidence interval, and sensitivity and subgroup analysis were performed., Results: The meta-analysis included 8 RCTs and 431 participants. Compared with the control group, use of PRP during meniscus surgery significantly improved the VAS (SMD: -0.40, P = .002, 95%CI: -0.66 to -0.15) and Lysholm score (MD: 3.06, P < .0001, 95%CI: 1.70-4.42) of meniscus injury, but the PRP showed no benefit in improving the healing rate of meniscus repair (RR: 1.22, P = .06, 95%CI: 0.99-1.51). No serious adverse events were reported in any study., Conclusions: PRP is safe and effective in improving the effect of meniscus repair as augment. Background: Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) is known to improve cognitive impairment caused by Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, but studies are lacking with respect to the efficacy of iTBS on poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI)., Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) iTBS on improving cognitive function in stroke patients., Methods: Fifty-eight patients with PSCI are randomly divided into iTBS (n = 28) and sham stimulation groups (n = 30). Both groups receive routine cognitive-related rehabilitation. The iTBS group is treated with iTBS intervention of the left DLPFC, and the sham stimulation group is treated with the same parameters at the same site for 2 weeks. Outcome measures are assessed at baseline (T0) and immediately after the last intervention (T1) by mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Oxford cognitive screen, and event-related potential P300., Results: There are no differences in baseline clinical characteristics between the two groups. After intervention, the MMSE scores and P300 amplitude increase significantly for both groups, and the P300 incubation period reduces significantly. The change value of the iTBS group is significantly higher than that of sham stimulation group (p < .05). Compared with the sham stimulation group, the iTBS group has more significant changes in semantic comprehension and executive function (p < .05)., Conclusion: iTBS can effectively and safely improve overall cognitive impairment in stroke patients, including semantic understanding and executive function, and it also has a positive impact on memory function. Future randomized controlled studies with large samples and long-term follow-up should be conducted to further validate the results of the present study., (© 2022 The Authors. Introduction: As one of the basic components of Astragalus, Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) has a protective effect on endothelial injury caused by diabetes. AS-IV stimulated endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) to secrete exosomes loaded with miR-21. This study aimed to investigate the effects of AS-IV-mediated EPCs exosomal miR-21 (EPC-exos-miR-21) on high glucose (HG) damaged endothelial cells., Materials and Methods: After the isolation of EPCs derived from fetal umbilical cord blood, exosomes of EPCs were obtained by differential centrifugation. The morphology of exosomes was observed by electron microscopy. The particle size distribution of exosomes was detected by Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were treated with 33 mM glucose to establish an HG injury model. Flow cytometry and TUNEL assay were used to characterize the surface markers of primary EPCs and the apoptosis of HUVECs. The gene and protein expression were detected by qPCR, immunofluorescence, and Western blotting. A dual luciferase assay was used to verify the targeting relationship of miR-21 with PTEN., Results: HG environment led to time- and dose-dependent inhibition and enhancement of autophagy and apoptosis in HUVECs. AS-IV stimulated EPCs to secrete exosomes loaded with miR-21. Exosomes secreted by EPCs pretreated with AS-IV [EPC-exo(ASIV)] promoted autophagy and inhibited apoptosis in HG-impaired HUVECs. PTEN is a target of miR-21. MiR-21 carried by EPC-exo(ASIV) repressed PTEN expression in HG-impaired HUVECs. In contrast, p-AKT, p-mTOR, p-PI3K, cleaved PARP and PARP levels were upregulated. Compared to the HG group, the expression of autophagy regulatory genes (ATG5, beclin1 and LC3) was enhanced in the EPC-exo(ASIV) group and EPC-exo(ASIV)-miR-21 mimic group. In contrast, apoptosis-positive regulatory genes (Bax, caspase-3 and caspase-9) were attenuated. Further overexpression of PTEN reversed the expression of these genes., Conclusions: AS-IV-mediated EPC-exos-miR-21 could enhance autophagy and depress apoptosis in HG-damaged endothelial cells via the miR-21/PTEN axis.

Cadmium (Cd) has been reported to exhibit antitumor effects against chemically induced liver tumors. However, the antitumor effects of Cd are not completely understood. Metallotherapy, the use of a toxic metal to attack liver tumors, could be a viable strategy. In the present study, 8-week old, male, C57BL/6 mice were administered injections of diethylnitrosamine (DEN) (90 mg/kg, and then 50 mg/kg 2 weeks later), followed by liver tumor promotion with carbon tetrachloride. Cadmium chloride was administered in the drinking water (1000 ppm) from 21-40 weeks after DEN initiation. Body weights were recorded and liver tumor formation was monitored via ultrasound. At the end of experiments, livers were removed, weighed, and the tumor incidence, tumor numbers and tumor size scores were recorded. Liver histology and metallothionein (MT) immunostaining were performed. After DEN injection, animal body weight decreased, and then slowly recovered with time. Cd treatment did not affect animal body weight gain. Ultrasound analysis detected liver tumors 35 weeks after DEN injection, and the mice were necropsied at 40 weeks. Liver/body weight ratios increased in the DEN and DEN + Cd groups. Cd treatment decreased the tumor incidence (71 vs. 17%), tumor numbers (15 vs. 2) and tumor scores (22 vs. 3) when compared with the DEN only group. Histopathology showed hepatocyte degeneration in all groups, and immunohistochemistry showed MT-deficiency in the liver tumors, while MT staining was intensified in the surrounding tissues. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR showed increases in α-fetoprotein level in DEN-treated livers, and increases in MT-2 and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) levels in Cd-treated livers. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Mercury sulfides (HgS) are frequently included in Ayurveda, Tibetan and Chinese medicines to assist the presumed therapeutic effects, but the ethnopharmacology remains elusive. The present study examined the protective effects of α-HgS-containing Hua-Feng-Dan and β-HgS-containing 70 Wei-Zhen-Zhu-Wan (70W, Rannasangpei) against Parkinson's disease mice induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) plus 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)., Method: A single injection of LPS (5 mg/kg ip) was given to adult male C57BL/6 mice, and 150 days later, the low dose of MPTP (15 mg/kg, ip, for 4 days) was given to produce the "two-hit" Parkinson's disease model. Together with MPTP treatment, mice were fed with clinically-relevant doses of Hua-Feng-Dan (0.6 g/kg) and 70W (0.2 g/kg) for 35 days. Rotarod test was performed to examine muscle coordination capability. At the end of the experiment, brain was transcardially perfused with paraformaldehyde, the substantia nigra was sectioned for microglia (Iba1 staining) and dopaminergic neuron (THir staining) determination. Colon bacterial DNA was extracted and subjected to qPCR analysis with 16S rRNA probes., Results: The low-grade, chronic neuroinflammation produced by LPS aggravated MPTP neurotoxicity, as evidenced by decreased motor activity, intensified microglia activation and loss of dopaminergic neurons. Both Hua-Feng-Dan and 70W increased rotarod activity and ameliorated the pathological lesions in the brain. In gut microbiomes examined, LPS plus MPTP increased Verrucomicrobiaceae, Methanobacteriaceae, Pronicromonosporaceae, and Clostridaceae species were attenuated by Hua-Feng-Dan and 70W., Conclusions: α-HgS-containing Hua-Feng-Dan and β-HgS-containing 70W at clinical doses protected against chronic LPS plus MPTP-induced toxicity to the brain and gut, suggesting HgS-containing traditional medicines could target gut microbiota as a mechanism of their therapeutic effects., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest All authors declare no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Although oxidase mimetic nanozymes have been widely investigated, specific biological molecules have rarely been explored as substrates, particularly in the case of ascorbate oxidase (AAO) mimetic nanozymes. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time that copper(II) oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) catalyze the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) by dissolved O 2 (as a green oxidant) to form dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA), thus functioning as a new kind of AAO mimic. Under neutral conditions, the Michaelis-Menten constant of CuO NPs (0.1302 mm) is similar to that of AAO (0.0840 mm). Furthermore, the robustness of CuO NPs is greater than that of AAO, thus making them suitable for applications under various conditions. As a demonstration, a fluorescence AA sensor based on the AAO mimetic activity of CuO NPs was developed. To obtain a fluorescent product, o-phenylenediamine (OPDA) was used to react with the DHAA produced by the oxidation of AA catalyzed by CuO NPs. The developed sensor was cost-effective and easy to fabricate and exhibited high selectivity/sensitivity with a wide linear range (1.25×10 -6 to 1.125×10 -4  m) and a low detection limit (3.2×10 -8  m). Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Hua-Feng-Dan (HFD) is a traditional Chinese medicine used for neurological disorders. HFD contains cinnabar (HgS) and realgar (As 4 S 4 ). The ethnopharmacological basis of cinnabar and realgar in HFD is not known., Aim of the Study: To address the role of cinnabar and realgar in HFD-produced neuroprotection against neurodegenerative diseases and disturbance of gut microbiota., Materials and Methods: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) plus rotenone (ROT)-elicited rat dopaminergic (DA) neuronal damage loss was performed as a Parkinson's disease animal model. Rats were given a single injection of LPS. Four months later, rats were challenged with the threshold dose of ROT. The clinical dose of HFD was administered via feed, starting from ROT administration for 46 days. Behavioral dysfunction was detected by rotarod and Y-maze tests. DA neuron loss and microglial activation were assessed via immunohistochemical staining and western bolt analysis. The colon content was collected to extract bacterial DNA followed by real-time PCR analysis with 16S rRNA primers., Results: LPS plus ROT induced neurotoxicity, as evidenced by DA neuron loss in substantia nigra, impaired behavioral functions and increased microglial activation. HFD-original (containing 10% cinnabar and 10% realgar) rescued loss of DA neurons, improved behavioral dysfunction and attenuated microglial activation. Compared with HFD-original, HFD-reduced (3% cinnabar and 3% realgar) was also effective, but to be a less extent, while HFD-removed (without cinnabar and realgar) was ineffective. In analysis of gut microbiome, the increased Verrucomicrobiaceae and Lactobacteriaceae, and the decreased Enterobacteeriaceae by LPS plus ROT were ameliorated by HFD-original, and to be the less extent by HFD-reduced., Conclusion: Cinnabar and realgar are active ingredients in HFD to exert beneficial effects in a neurodegenerative model and gut microbiota., (Copyright © 2019. Background: Handan Eye Study (HES), a large population-based cohort study in rural area of northern China, was one of the few studies focusing on the major eye diseases of rural Chinese population. The aim of this study was to introduce the design, methodology and to assess the data quality of the follow-up phase of HES., Methods: All participants were recruited in Yongnian county of Handan city between 2012 and 2013. Main outcomes were measured by visual quality scales and ocular examinations. We performed the Chi-square test to make comparison of categorical data among groups, One-way analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to make comparison of continuous data among groups, a post-hoc test was done to make further pairwise comparison. Inter-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Kappa coefficients were used to evaluate the consistency between different operators. Logistic regression was used to explore the influence factors of death, odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to estimate the effect size of each influence factor., Results: The follow-up rate was 85.3%. Subjects were classified into three groups: the follow-up group (n = 5394), the loss to follow-up group (n = 929), and the dead group (n = 507), comparison of their baseline information was done. Compared with the other two groups, age of the dead group (66.52 ± 10.31 years) was the oldest (Z = 651.293, P < 0.001), male proportion was the highest (59.0%) (χ = 42.351, P < 0.001), only 65.9% of the dead finished middle school education (Z = 205.354, P < 0.001). The marriage percentage, body mass index (BMI), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and intra-ocular pressure of the dead group was the lowest either. Spherical equivalent error (SER) of the dead group was the highest. Besides, history of smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease were more common in the dead group. Multivariate analysis showed that age (OR = 1.901, 95% CI: 1.074-1.108), gender (OR = 0.317, 95% CI: 0.224-0.448), and BCVA (OR = 0.282, 95% CI: 0.158-0.503) were associated with death. While between the follow-up group and the loss to follow-up group, there was only difference on age, gender, BMI, systolic blood pressure and SER. The Cronbach coefficients of all scales used in the follow-up were ≥0.63 and the cumulative variances were ≥0.61, indicating good reliability and validity. The ICCs and Kappa coefficients between different operators were ≥0.69., Conclusions: HES has a high follow-up rate and a low risk of loss to follow-up bias. Age, gender, and BCVA are influence factors of death. Specifically, male subjects are at a higher risk of death than female, age is a risk factor of death while BCVA is a protective factor for death.

Mercury (Hg) is generally considered as a toxic metal; yet the biological outcomes of Hg-containing compounds are highly dependent upon their chemical forms. We hypothesize that mercury sulfide (HgS) is different from HgCl 2 and methylmercury (MeHg) in producing intestinal Hg absorption and disruption of gut microbiome. To test this hypothesis, mice were given orally with HgS (α-HgS, 30 mg/kg), Zuotai (β-HgS, 30 mg/kg), HgCl 2 (33.6 mg/kg, equivalent Hg as HgS), or MeHg (3.1 mg/kg, 1/10 Hg as HgS) for 7 days. Accumulation of Hg in the duodenum and ileum after HgCl 2 (30-40 fold) and MeHg (10-15 fold) was higher than HgS and Zuotai (~2-fold). HgCl 2 and MeHg decreased intestinal intake peptide transporter-1 and Ost-β, and increased ileal bile acid binding protein and equilibrative nucleoside transporter-1. The efflux transporters ATP-binding cassette sub-family C member-4 (Abcc4), Abcg2, Abcg5/8, and Abcb1b were increased by HgCl 2 and to a lesser extent by MeHg, while HgS and Zuotai had minimal effects. Bacterial DNA was extracted and subjected to 16S rDNA sequencing. Operational taxonomic unit (OTU) results showed that among the 10 phyla, HgS increased Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, while HgCl 2 increased Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria and decreased Firmicutes; among the 79 families, HgS increased Rikenellaceae, Lactobacillaceae, Helicobacteraceae, and decreased Prevotellaceae, while HgCl 2 increased Odoribacteraceae, Porphyromonadaceae, and decreased Lactobacillaceae; among the 232 genus/species, HgS and Zuotai affected gut microbiome quite differently from HgCl 2 and MeHg. qPCR analysis with 16S rRNA confirmed sequencing results. Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) are phase-I metabolic enzymes playing important roles in drug metabolism, dietary chemicals and endogenous molecules. Age is a key factor influencing P450s expression. Thus, age-related changes of CYP 1-4 families and bile acid homeostasis-related CYPs, the corresponding nuclear receptors and a few phase-II genes were examined. Livers from male Sprague-Dawley rats at fetus (-2 d), neonates (1, 7, and 14 d), weanling (21 d), puberty (28 and 35 d), adulthood (60 and 180 d), and aging (540 and 800 d) were collected and subjected to qPCR analysis. Liver proteins from 14, 28, 60, 180, 540 and 800 days of age were also extracted for selected protein analysis by western blot. In general, there were three patterns of their expression: Some of the drug-metabolizing enzymes and related nuclear receptors were low in fetal and neonatal stage, increased with liver maturation and decreased quickly at aging (AhR, Cyp1a1, Cyp2b1, Cyp2b2, Cyp3a1, Cyp3a2, Ugt1a2); the majority of P450s (Cyp1a2, Cyp2c6, Cyp2c11, Cyp2d2, Cyp2e1, CAR, PXR, FXR, Cyp7a1, Cyp7b1. Cyp8b1, Cyp27a1, Ugt1a1, Sult1a1, Sult1a2) maintained relatively high levels throughout the adulthood, and decreased at 800 days of age; and some had an early peak between 7 and 14 days (CAR, PXR, PPARα, Cyp4a1, Ugt1a2). The protein expression of CYP1A2, CYP2B1, CYP2E1, CYP3A1, CYP4A1, and CYP7A1 corresponded the trend of mRNA changes. It is desirable but challenging to assemble various biomimetic properties into a functional catalytic cascade system. In this work, cupric oxide nanoparticles were investigated as oxidase mimics for the aerobic oxidation of cysteine to cystine with the generation of hydrogen peroxide. Coupling this property with the peroxidase-like activity of CuO nanoparticles, we constructed a self-organized cascade reaction system based on a single-component nanozyme, which includes the oxidation of cysteine to yield cystine and hydrogen peroxide and the hydrogen peroxide-mediated oxidation of terephthalic acid to produce a fluorescence change. Based on this artificial enzymatic cascade reaction system, a fluorometric assay method with a low detection limit of 6.6nM was established for cysteine determination. This platform was then applied for the detection of cysteine in pharmaceutical products and human plasma, which yielded satisfactory results. Surgical treatment of cataract is the emphasis of prevention of blindness in China. In the past ten years, cataract prevention work has made great strides. However, the cataract surgery rate (CSR) in one million people is still far away from the developed countries, and not enough to eliminate the blindness of cataract in our country. The CSR is related to many factors. In this article, the issue of the CSR increase is commented from four aspects, including improving the quantity and quality of cataract surgery, increasing the allocation of ophthalmic resources to primary hospitals, strengthening the cooperation between the urban and backward areas in ophthalmology, and the economic factors. It is hoped that our ophthalmic practitioners pay more attention to the prevention of blindness, and the quantity and quality of cataract surgery could be increased. Objective: To determine the prevalence of trachoma in urban and rural area in China. To provide the data evidence for the strategies of eliminating trachoma in China., Methods: Survey was conducted in 13 suspect trachoma high prevalence provinces according to the World Health Organization trachoma grading system and Trachoma Rapid Assessment(TRA)., Results: From 2004 to 2007, a total number of examined children which were younger than 10 years old was 59 630. The prevalence of TF was 0.94%. To sum up the data of 2004 and 2005, the prevalence of active trachoma was 1.71% for children.TT and CO was not reported. The results for subjects older than 50 years old showed that the prevalence of TT was 0.34%. We examined 26 857 adults in both 2004 and 2005.The prevalence of TF, TI, TS and CO was 0.03%,0.08%,0.88% and 0.05% respectively., Conclusions: The prevalence of active trachoma of younger children was under 5%. However,the prevalence of TT of the adults was not reached the target.

Aim: To evaluate intra-session repeatability and reproducibility of optical quality parameters measured at objective and subjective best focuses in a double-pass system., Methods: Thirty Chinese healthy adults (19 to 40 years old) meeting our inclusion criterion were enrolled in the study. After a basic eye examination, two methods of optical quality measurement, based on subjective and objective best focuses were performed using the Optical Quality Analysis System (OQAS) with an artificial pupil diameter of 4.0 mm., Results: With each method, three consecutive measurements of the following parameters: the modulation transfer function cutoff frequency (MTFcutoff), the Strehl(2D) ratio, the OQAS values (OVs) at contrasts of 100%, 20%, 9% and the objective scatter index (OSI) were performed by an experienced examiner. The repeatability of each method was evaluated by the repeatability limit (RL) and the coefficient of repeatability (COR). Reproducibility of the two methods was evaluated by intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and the 95% limits of agreement (Bland and Altman analysis). Thirty subjects, seven females and twenty three males, of whom 15 right eyes and 15 left eyes were selected randomly for recruitment in the study. The RLs (percentage) for the six parameters measured at objective focus and subjective focus ranged from 8.44% to 15.13% and 10.85% to 16.26%, respectively. The CORs for the two measurement methods ranged from 8.27% to 14.83% and 10.63% to 15.93%, respectively. With regard to reproducibility, the ICCs for the six parameters of OQAS ranged from 0.024 to 0.276. The 95% limits of agreement obtained for the six parameters (in comparison of the two methods) ranged from -0.57 to 42.18 (MTFcutoff), -0.01 to 0.23 (Strehl(2D) ratio), -0.02 to 1.40 (OV100%), -0.10 to 1.75 (OV20%), -0.14 to 1.80 (OV9%) and -1.46 to 0.18 (OSI)., Conclusion: Measurements provided by OQAS with either method showed a good repeatability. However, the results obtained from the two different measurement methods showed a poor reproducibility. These findings suggest that it might be best to evaluate patients' optical quality by OQAS using the best focus as chosen automatically by the instrument.

Background: The Ostomy Adjustment Scale (OAS) has been widely used to measure the adjustment to an ostomy. Although the instrument had been used among subjects from various backgrounds, psychometric properties had never been evaluated., Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to test the psychometric properties of the OAS among Chinese colostomy patients, and the secondary aim was to examine the predictors of colostomy adjustment., Methods: The translated OAS was tested using a convenience sample of 207 colostomy patients from a university-affiliated cancer center in China., Results: The content validity of the OAS was 0.91. Four items were removed during the process of validity and reliability testing. The final Chinese version of the OAS consisted of 30 items (OAS-C-30) with 4 subscales as follows: negative affect, normal functioning, therapy attitude, and life worry. The Cronbach's α, the intraclass correlation, and a split-half Spearman-Brown coefficient for the total scale were 0.915, 0.902 and 0.871, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that stoma self-efficacy, stoma acceptance, excessive aerofluxus, constipation, family relationship, and body image loss were the predictors of adjustment among Chinese colostomy patients., Conclusion: The OAS-C-30 has been proven to be a valid and reliable measure to assess the adjustment among colostomy patients., Implications for Practice: The OAS-C-30 is a useful instrument to assess and monitor the level of adjustment among patients with permanent colostomies. The identified predictor variables for adjustment also provide insights to clinicians to assist them in planning interventions to facilitate the adjustment of colostomy patients.

The purpose of this analysis is to determine the effectiveness of dressing material in the prevention of pressure ulcers. Results showed that hydrocolloid, foam, and film were more effective than a standard care protocol in patients at risk for pressure ulcers.

We performed a cross-sectional study of 82 Chinese patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) enrolled during an 18-month period. We used a clinical interview to evaluate a Chinese version of the nonmotor symptoms questionnaire (NMSQuest) as an instrument for measuring the nonmotor symptoms (NMS) in Chinese patients with PD. The patients' cognitive deficit, depression/sleep, disease severity and motor status were assessed based on the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), the Hamilton depression scale (HAMD)/Parkinson's disease sleep scale (PDSS), the modified Hoehn and Yahr staging scale (H&Y) and the unified Parkinson's disease rating scale part III (UPDRS III), respectively. Thirty items distributed in nine different domains of the NMSQuest were evaluated, and the association between the NMSQuest and MMSE, H&Y, UPDRS, HAMD and PDSS was identified. Significant correlations were observed between the NMSQuest and disease duration (rs = 0.272, p = 0.013), UPDRS total score (rs = 0.444, p < 0.001), UPDRS II (rs = 0.415, p < 0.001) and UPDRS III (rs = 0.228, p = 0.039). Furthermore, the sleep disorder and mood (depression/anxiety) domain of the NMSQuest were significantly correlated with the PDSS (rs = -0.471, p < 0.001) and HAMD (rs = 0.687, p < 0.001), respectively. Our results indicate that the Chinese version of the NMSQuest, a useful screening tool, can be considered as a comprehensive, practical measure for NMS evaluation in Chinese PD patients. The NMSQuest highlights the prevalence of the wide range of NMS and indicated good responsiveness and interpretability. We strongly recommend routine use of the simplified Chinese version of NMSQuest in this country.

In this study, we report the relationship between hyperuricemia and hypertension in a middle-aged Chinese population, emphasizing the difference of gender. The cross-sectional study was conducted among 1776 adults aged 45-60 years, who participated in the Hefei Nutrition and Health Study (2012). Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid (SUA)> 420 μmol/l for men, and > 360 μmol/l for women. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg. Anthropometric measurements and biochemical data were collected using standardized procedures. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between hyperuricemia and hypertension with adjustment of potential confounding factors. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), SBP, DBP, fasting glucose, SUA and the prevalence of hyperuricemia and hypertension were significantly higher in male than in female (p < 0.001). Females had significantly higher levels of triglycerides (TG) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (5.23 ± 0.87 vs 5.12 ± 1.01, p < 0.05, 1.50 ± 0.37 vs 1.28 ± 0.41, respectively.) than males. Simple correlation analysis showed that SUA was positively associated with WC and TG. In addition, after adjusting for potential confounders, hyperuricemia was associated with increased risk of hypertension in both males and females, with odds ratios (95% CI) of 1.680 (1.110-2.543) and 1.065 (1.012-1.118), respectively. Conclusions: The association of hyperuricemia with hypertension was stronger in males than in females, and middle-aged men with hyperuricemia had greater association with hypertension. Our findings remain to be confirmed in future prospective studies.

A novel fluorescent hydrogen peroxide sensor was developed based on the peroxidase-like activity of cupric oxide nanoparticles. Cupric oxide nanoparticles effectively catalyzed the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into hydroxyl radicals. Then terephthalic acid was oxidized by hydroxyl radical to form a highly fluorescent product. The linear range of hydrogen peroxide estimated to be 5.0 × 10(-6)-2.0 × 10(-4)M with a detection limit of 3.4 × 10(-7)M. Moreover, this detection system enabled the sensing of analytes which can enzymatically generate hydrogen peroxide. By coupling the oxidation of glucose or L-lactate catalyzed by their corresponding oxidase enzymes with terephthalic acid oxidation catalyzed by cupric oxide nanoparticles, sensitive assays of glucose and l-lactate with detection limits of 1.0 × 10(-6) and 4.5 × 10(-8)M were realized. Background: The aim of this research was to explore quality of life (QOL) and acceptance of disability and social support of colostomy patients as well as the relationship between these factors., Methods: A descriptive, correlational study was conducted using four scales: the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Colorectal Cancer-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-CR38) scales, the Acceptance of Disability Scale (ADS), and the Social Relational Quality Scale (SRQS). A convenience sample of 111 colostomy patients from four hospitals in Guangzhou who underwent colostomy operation at least one month prior to the study and who visited the stoma clinic or association from August 2011 to February 2012 was evaluated for inclusion in the study. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 17.0 software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA)., Results: The patients' general health status was better than the reference level recommended by European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, and the overall ADS score was average. The SRQS score was similar to that found in a Hong Kong study. The general health status and dimensions of QOL were significantly correlated with ADS and all of its dimensions (P < 0.05). The general health status and dimensions of QOL were also significantly correlated with SRQS and all of its dimensions (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: QOL, acceptance of disability, and social relational quality of colostomy patients were closely related. Our results emphasize that patients should work to form rational values and close bonds with families and friends to achieve a better QOL.

A new wide-angle endoscope for visible light observation on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) has been recently developed. The head section of the optical system is based on a mirror reflection design that is similar to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor-like wide-angle observation diagnostic on the Joint European Torus. However, the optical system design has been simplified and improved. As a result, the global transmittance of the system is as high as 79.6% in the wavelength range from 380 to 780 nm, and the spatial resolution is <5 mm for the full depth of field (4000 mm). The optical system also has a large relative aperture (1:2.4) and can be applied in high-speed camera diagnostics. As an important diagnostic tool, the optical system has been installed on the HT-7 (Hefei Tokamak-7) for its final experimental campaign, and the experiments confirmed that it can be applied to the investigation of transient processes in plasma, such as ELMy eruptions in H-mode, on EAST.

Many computational approaches developed to identify protein complexes in protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks perform their tasks based only on network topologies. The attributes of the proteins in the networks are usually ignored. As protein attributes within a complex may also be related to each other, we have developed a PCIA algorithm to take into consideration both such information and network topology in the identification process of protein complexes. Given a PPI network, PCIA first finds information about the attributes of the proteins in a PPI network in the Gene Ontology databases and uses such information for the identification of protein complexes. PCIA then computes a Degree of Association measure for each pair of interacting proteins to quantitatively determine how much their attribute values associate with each other. Based on this association measure, PCIA is able to discover dense graph clusters consisting of proteins whose attribute values are significantly closer associated with each other. PCIA has been tested with real data and experimental results seem to indicate that attributes of the proteins in the same complex do have some association with each other and, therefore, that protein complexes can be more accurately identified when protein attributes are taken into consideration.

Objective: To investigate the influence of preventive pericardial devascularization on the life quality of patients with advanced schistosomiasis., Methods: The clinical data of advanced schistosomiasis patients who received the preventive pericardial devascularization from January 2000 to December 2009 (140 cases) were collected and analyzed retrospectively, and other 81 cases without preventive pericardial devascularization served as controls. Results Compared with that of the control group, the long term upper gastrointestinal rebleeding within 3 years of the study group was much fewer (P < 0.01), while that of more than 5 years was fewer (P < 0.05); there were no differences in ascites and hepatic coma between the two groups (P > 0.05); the abilities of daily life and labor of the study group were much better than those of the control group (P < 0.01), and those of taking care of themselves and lost ability of labor were not significant between the two groups (P > 0.05); the long term death rate after surgery of the study group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion The effect of preventive pericardial devascularization in the treatment of advanced schistosomiasis is reliable and the life qualities of the patients improve.

Phloem-mobile insecticides are preferred to achieve economically useful activity. However, only a few phloem-mobile synthetic insecticides are available. One approach to converting nonmobile insecticides into phloem-mobile types is introducing sugar to the parent compound. To test whether the addition of a glucose group to a non-phloem-mobile insecticide enables conversion into phloem-mobile, N-[3-cyano-1-[2,6-dichloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-[(trifluoromethyl)sulfinyl]-1H-pyrazol-5-yl]-1-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-methanamine (GTF) was prepared through click chemistry. A phloem-mobility test in Ricinus communis L. seedlings confirmed that GTF was mobile in the sieve tubes. Although GTF exhibited lower insecticidal activity against the third-instar larvae of Pzlutella xylostella than fipronil did, it can be reconverted into fipronil in adult plants of castor bean, thereby offsetting the decrease of insecticidal activity. Therefore, the presence of a glucose core confers phloem mobility to fipronil.

Some compounds that contain glucose groups can be transported across the plasma membrane into the cells through hexose transporters. To test the hypothesis that glucose-conjugated insecticides also have similar uptake and translocation properties, a novel fluorescent conjugate (12) was prepared by conjugating glucose and 7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazole with 4-iodo-1-phenylpyrazoles. Its fluorescence spectra and uptake by suspension-cultured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.cv.) cells were studied. The fluorescence spectra showed long wavelengths with maximum emission at 530nm. After incubating tobacco cell suspensions in 10μM conjugate for 0.5h, green fluorescence of 12 was clearly visible in the cells under fluorescence microscopy. After 2h of incubation, more than 70% of 12 was absorbed. Carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone, phloridzin and glucose drastically inhibited uptake. In concentration-dependent uptakes, the uptake rate of 12 showed a saturable component and was in accordance with Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Objective: To investigate the effect of organic gallium and gallium chloride on bone metabolism and their therapeutic effect against tretinoin-induced osteoporosis in rats., Methods: Rat models of osteoporosis was established with intragastric administration of tretinoin at the daily dose of 85 mg/kg for 15 days and randomized into control, organic gallium and gallium chloride groups. After administration of the corresponding treatments (none for the control group) for 4 weeks, the changes of the indices for osteoporosis were evaluated through biochemical and pathological approaches., Results: Tretinoin induced obvious changes in bone structure and contents of bone calcium and other elements, causing also significantly increased tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP), which suggested the development of osteoporosis. Administration of organic gallium and gallium chloride treatments increased the bone density, bone cortex thickness and the percentage of bone trabecula, and Ga, Ca, P contents in the femur and teeth, but lowered the activity of TRAP and AKP, suggesting decreased bone conversion rate. Compared with gallium chloride, organic gallium required smaller dose with better safety to produce better therapeutic effect., Conclusion: Organic gallium can be safe and effective for treatment of tretinoin-induced osteoporosis in rats.

Objective: To report a novel mutation in RPGR gene in a Chinese family with X-linked dominant retinitis pigmentosa(XLRP)., Methods: Genetic linkage analysis was performed on the known genetic loci for XLRP with a panel of polymorphic markers, then the mutations were identified by single-strand conformation polymorphism(SSCP) and direct sequencing., Results: Significant two-point Lod score was generated using marker DXS8025 (Zmax=2.4, theta =0). The disease gene locus was confined to Xp21.1 with further analysis of genetic linkage and haplotype. Mutations screening of RPGR gene in this family revealed a GA deletion at ORF15+483-484 which caused the open reading frameshift. This novel mutation co-segregated with the affected members of the pedigree, but it was not present in the unaffected relatives., Conclusion: The above finding expands the spectrum of RPGR mutations causing XLRP in Chinese family and is useful for further genetic consultation and genetic diagnosis.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and causes of low vision and blindness in Beijing residents aged 40 and over., Methods: 4,451 residents aged 40 and over in 3 rural communities and 5 urban communities in Beijing underwent eye examination, including examination of distant and near visual acuity (VA), best corrected distant and near VA, pinhole VA, and visual field, slit lamp biomicroscopy, and dilated ocular examination in the form of in-home survey by defined population-based sampling. The medical history was surveyed too. The data were analyzed based on the criteria of the World Health Organization., Results: The general prevalence rates of low vision and blindness were 0.99% (95% CI: 0.70-1.28) and 0.39% (95% CI: 0.21-0.57) respectively. The prevalence rate of low vision in females was 1.45%, 2.23 times that of males (0.65%) (OR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.00-3.95). The prevalence rate of low vision of rural residents was 1.76%, 2.89 times that of urban residents (0.61%) (OR: 2.93, 95% CI: 1.43-6.11). The prevalence rate of blindness in females was 0.64% and 0.37% in males. The prevalence rate of blindness of rural residents was 1.06%, 2.04 times that of the urban residents (0.52%) (OR: 3.77, 95% CI: 1.41-10.62). The 3 major causes of blindness were cataract (37.50%), glaucoma (29.20%), and high myopic macular degeneration (8.30%). The prevalence of blindness increased with age., Conclusion: The prevalence rates of low vision and blindness are higher in the rural areas. Cataract, glaucoma, and high myopic macular degeneration are the major causes of blindness. The prevalence of low vision and blindness are influenced by age, sex; area, health care level, educational level, and environmental factors.

Background: Decreased equilibrium in standing and walking is a common problem associated with hemiplegic stroke patients. Stroke patients with balance problems are prone to falls. In addition to spatial recognition, the appropriate pattern of muscle activity to preserve balance depends on sensory and motor processes. Previous reports have mentioned that the right posterior parietal cortex seems to be predominantly involved in spatial integration. We therefore wanted to conduct a study to quantify and compare the balance control between right hemispheric stroke and left hemispheric stroke patients., Methods: Thirty hemiplegic stroke patients (14 right, 16 left) and 15 age-matched healthy subjects were included in this study. The objective measurement of the basic components of balance control was performed using the SMART Balance Master. The motor status of the hemiplegic limbs was evaluated by Brunnstrom staging. The functional outcome of the stroke patients was evaluated by the functional independence measure (FIM)., Results: The balance function of stroke patients was significantly worse as compared to that of the healthy subjects especially in dynamic stability. However, different from the other reports, our right hemispheric stroke patients had better balance function than our left hemispheric patients. The locomotion and mobility scores of the FIM were also better in the right hemispheric stroke patients., Conclusion: This result suggested that the motor function of the healthy limbs of stroke patients may play an important role in their balance function. The results of this study may provide a guide for prescribing a more efficient rehabilitation program for stroke patients.
