Selenium (Se) solar cells were the world’s first solid-state photovoltaics reported in 1883, opening the modern photovoltaics. However, its wide bandgap (~1.9 eV) limits sunlight harvesting. Here, we revisit the world’s oldest but long-ignored photovoltaic material with the emergence of indoor photovoltaics (IPVs); the absorption spectrum of Se perfectly matches the emission spectra of commonly used indoor light sources in the 400 to 700 nm range. We find that the widely used Te adhesion layer also passivates defects at the nonbonded Se/TiO 2 interface. By optimizing the Te coverage from 6.9 to 70.4%, the resulting Se cells exhibit an efficiency of 15.1% under 1000 lux indoor illumination and show no efficiency loss after 1000 hours of continuous indoor illumination without encapsulation, outperforming the present IPV industry standard of amorphous silicon cells in both efficiency and stability. We further fabricate Se modules (6.75 cm 2 ) that produce 232.6 μW output power under indoor illumination, powering a radio-frequency identification–based localization tag.

Angelicae Sinensis Radix, as a medicinal and edible Chinese medicinal herb, is widely used in clinical practice. It is mainly cultivated in Minxian, Tanchang, Zhangxian and Weiyuan counties of Gansu province. In recent years, with the comprehensive and in-depth study of Angelicae Sinensis Radix in China and abroad, its chemical composition, pharmacological effects and application and development have attracted much attention. In this study, the chemical composition, traditional efficacy, and modern pharmacological effects of Angelicae Sinensis Radix were summarized. On this basis, combined with the core concept of quality markers(Q-markers), the Q-markers of Angelicae Sinensis Radix were discussed from the aspects of mass transfer and traceability and chemical composition specificity, availability, and measurability, which provided scientific basis for the quality evaluation of Angelicae Sinensis Radix.

The interfacial stability is highly responsible for the longevity and safety of sodium ion batteries (SIBs). However, the continuous solid-electrolyte interphase(SEI) growth would deteriorate its stability. Essentially, the SEI growth is associated with the electron leakage behavior, yet few efforts have tried to suppress the SEI growth, from the perspective of mitigating electron leakage. Herein, we built two kinds of SEI layers with distinct growth behaviors, via the additive strategy. The SEI physicochemical features (morphology and componential information) and SEI electronic properties (LUMO level, band gap, electron work function) were investigated elaborately. Experimental and calculational analyses showed that, the SEI layer with suppressed growth delivers both the low electron driving force and the high electron insulation ability. Thus, the electron leakage is mitigated, which restrains the continuous SEI growth, and favors the interface stability with enhanced electrochemical performance.

GeSe is an emerging promising light-harvesting material for photovoltaics due to its excellent optoelectronic properties, nontoxic and earth-abundant constituents, and high stability. In particular, perovskite-like antibonding states at the valence band maximum arising from Ge-4s and Se-4p coupling enable the bulk-defect-tolerant properties in GeSe. However, a fundamental understanding of surface-defect states in GeSe, another important factor for high-performance photovoltaics, is still lacking. Here, we investigate the surface-defect properties of GeSe through first-principle calculations. We find that different from common semiconductors possessing numerous surface dangling bonds, some GeSe surfaces are prone to reconstruction, thus eliminating the dangling bonds. The rearranged armchair edges exhibit unexpected benign defect properties, similar to those of bulk GeSe, arising from the formation of bulk-like [GeSe3] tetrahedrons. We further show that the stable exposed (111) surfaces are hard to reconstruct due to the stiff structure but are effectively passivated by the addition of H.

Among the all-solid-state lithium metal batteries, it is remarkably of importance to realize the superior compatibility and stability of electrode/electrolyte solid-solid interface. A direct viewer of microevolution will induce an in-depth fundamental insight into the reaction mechanisms and interfacial regulations during the cycling operation. Herein, using in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy combined with optical microscope imaging techniques, we present a dynamic observation of interfacial processes and structural evolution of solid-state electrolyte mediated by lithium salts in a working all-solid-state lithium-sulfur battery (ASSLSB) with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (LiFSI) and LiTFSI-LiFSI binary-salts. The in-situ monitoring shows that the binary-anion polymer-rich composite electrolytes could well achieve self-regulation in the interfacial compatibility and the side reaction of dissolved polysulfides in enabling ASSLSBs. Moreover, it indicates the anion dependence of ion transportation, interphasial wettability and labile decomposition of electrolytes for ASSLS systems, which determines the dynamic evolution and systematically proposes the corresponding interfacial degradation mechanisms. The in situ visualization provides a direct understanding of ASSLS electrochemical reaction mechanisms and interphasial properties, which will efficiently guide one to explore strategies to develop the optimum all-solid-state systems.

Interlayer coupling as a unique feature for two-dimensional (2D) materials may influence their thickness-dependent physical properties, especially the bandgap due to quantum confinement effect. Widely-studied 2D materials usually possess strong interlayer coupling such as most of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), PtS2 and so on. However, 2D materials with weak interlayer coupling are rarely referred that mainly focus on ReS2, as well as its counterpart ReSe2. Here we report a new member of weak interlayer coupling 2D materials, germanium disulfide (GeS2). The interlayer interaction in GeS2 is investigated from theory to experiment. By density functional theory calculations, we find that this extraordinarily weak interlayer coupling in GeS2 originates from the weak hybridization of interlayer S atoms. Thickness-dependent Raman spectra of GeS2 flakes exhibit that the Raman peaks remain unchanged when increasing the thickness; and a small first-order temperature coefficient of −0.00857 cm−1·K−1 is obtained from the temperature-dependent Raman spectra. These experimental results further confirm the weak interlayer coupling in GeS2.

Phenolic resin as a typical hard carbon precursor has attracted much attention towards sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high carbon yield and large reversible capacity. However, phenolic resin-based hard carbon commonly suffers from limited cycling performance and low initial Coulombic efficiency. Herein, we synthesized a hard carbon material from phenolic resin and manipulated its microstructure through tuning the pyrolysis temperature and pre-oxidation procedure. In particular, hard carbon materials with pre-oxidation deliver much improved capacity retention in contrast with those without pre-oxidation. Further analysis shows that with the pre-oxidation procedure, the enlarged d002 spacing, the much disordered microstructure, and the increased content of oxygen-containing functional groups are responsible for the performance enhancement of hard carbon. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the microstructure feature of phenolic resin-based hard carbon and opens up a feasible avenue for the design of high-performance carbon anode materials for their application in SIBs.

Chalcogen elements, such as sulfur (S), selenium (Se), tellurium (Te) and the interchalcogen compounds, have been studied extensively as cathode materials for the next-generation rechargeable lithium/sodium (Li/Na) batteries. The high energy output of the Li/Na-chalcogen battery originates from the two-electron conversion reaction between chalcogen cathode and alkali metal anode, through which both electrodes are able to deliver high theoretical capacities. The reaction also leads to parasitic reactions that deteriorate the chemical environment in the battery, and different cathode-anode combinations show their own features. In this article, we intend to discuss the fundamental conversion electrochemistry between chalcogen elements and alkali metals and its potential influence, either positive or negative, on the performance of batteries. The strategies to improve the conversion electrochemistry of chalcogen cathode are also reviewed to offer insights into the reasonable design of rechargeable Li/Na-chalcogen batteries.

We report a molecular investigation of a cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc)-catalyzed CO2 reduction reaction by electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM). An ordered adlayer of CoPc was prepared on Au(111). Approximately 14 % of the adsorbed species appeared with high contrast in a CO2 -purged electrolyte environment. The ECSTM experiments indicate the proportion of high-contrast species correlated with the reduction of CoII Pc (-0.2 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE)). The high-contrast species is ascribed to the CoPc-CO2 complex, which is further confirmed by theoretical simulation. The sharp contrast change from CoPc-CO2 to CoPc is revealed by in situ ECSTM characterization of the reaction. Potential step experiments provide dynamic information for the initial stage of the reaction, which include the reduction of CoPc and the binding of CO2 , and the latter is the rate-limiting step. The rate constant of the formation and dissociation of CoPc-CO2 is estimated on the basis of the in situ ECSTM experiment.

High energy density batteries are urgently required for sustainable life. The intrinsic understanding of the reaction mechanism at the interfaces is essential for the progress. In this short overview, recent advances in rechargeable batteries by in situ atomic force microscopy are summarized, providing nanoscale information on the solid product evolution and metal plating/stripping inside working batteries. Besides, the multifunctional imaging of the morphology along with mechanical and electrical properties can be achieved to assist further interfacial design. Extensive applications of in situ atomic force microscopy are encouraged to explore the electrochemical mechanism and advanced engineering.

Silicon (Si) has been considered as one of the most promising anodes in secondary high-energy rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its high theoretical specific capacity and abundant reserves, whereas it suffers from an unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film and dramatic volume expansion. Herein, in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy (AFM) and visual videos were used to reveal the interphasial properties of SEI film and anisotropic dynamics upon lithiation/delithiation processes on the single-crystalline Si electrodes with different crystal plane orientations. Lithiation of Si (111) prefer to grow along the direction in the XY plane with the shape of oriented rods, in contrast, that of Si (100) form cone-like structure with the axial direction of perpendicular to the (100) surface. Quantitative dynamic processes elucidate the preferable reversibility in Si (111) system, revealing the corresponding structure-reactivity correlations.

Molybdenum disulfide is considered one of the most promising anodes for lithium-ion batteries due to its high specific capacity; however, it suffers from an unstable solid electrolyte interphase. Understanding its structural evolution and reaction mechanism upon charging/discharging is crucial for further improvements in battery performance. Herein, the interfacial processes of solid electrolyte interphase film formation and lithiation/delithiation on ultra-flat monolayer molybdenum disulfide are monitored by in situ atomic force microscopy. The live formation of ultra-thin and dense films can be induced by the use of fluoroethylene carbonate as an additive to effectively protect the anode electrodes. The evolution of the fluoroethylene carbonate-derived solid electrolyte interphase film upon cycling is quantitatively analysed. Furthermore, the formation of wrinkle-structure networks upon lithiation process is distinguished in detailed steps, and accordingly, structure-reactivity correlations are proposed. These quantitative results provide an in-depth understanding of the interfacial mechanism in molybdenum disulfide-based lithium-ion batteries., MoS2 is a highly promising anode material for lithium ion batteries. Here, aided by atomic force microscopy, the authors reveal the formation of an ultra-thin solid electrolyte interphase between MoS2 and electrolyte, providing fresh insight into the structural evolution and reaction mechanism at the interface.

Organic-inorganic halide perovskite materials are emerging as a new class of photoelectric materials for its low cost, easy preparation, and, especially, outstanding optoelectronic properties. Although tremendous efforts have been made on the regulation and optimization of perovskite materials and their microscopic electrical properties for high-efficiency solar cells, few reports focus on the evolution of electrical properties with temperature changes, especially at the microscopic scale, which will directly affect the device performances at varying temperatures. Here, we map the contact potential difference and photocurrent distribution of MAPbI3 at different temperatures in situ by Kelvin probe force microscopy and conductive atomic force microscopy, emphasizing the different influences of variable temperature and phase transition on the photoelectric properties of grains and grain boundaries (GBs). It is discovered that both the Fermi level and photocurrent decrease as the sample is heated from 30 to 80 °C gradually because of the variation of effective carrier concentration and the degradation of carrier mobility implicated by lattice vibration scattering. The difference between the Fermi level at GBs and that on the grains ascends first and then descends, peaking at 50 °C, near which MAPbI3 transforms from a tetragonal phase to a cubic phase. This peak is speculated as a comprehensive consequence of the increasing difference of the Fermi level of semiconductors with different doping concentrations and the converging properties of grains and GBs with the temperature rising because the lower ion activation energy of the cubic phase at higher temperatures facilitates greatly the ions' movement between grains and GB. The variation trend of the difference of the photocurrent is the same. These findings advance the knowledge on the temperature-induced variations of microscopic photoelectrical properties of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials, which may guide the development of strategies for improving their thermal stability.

To investigate a novel β-glucosidase from Bifidobacterium breve ATCC 15700 (BbBgl) to produce compound K (CK) via ginsenoside F2 by highly selective and efficient hydrolysis of the C-3 glycoside from ginsenoside Rd, the BbBgl gene was cloned and expressed in E. coli BL21. The recombinant BbBgl was purified by Ni-NTA magnetic beads to obtain an enzyme with specific activity of 37 U/mg protein using pNP-Glc as substrate. The enzyme activity was optimized at pH 5.0, 35°C, 2 or 6 U/ml, and its activity was enhanced by Mn2+ significantly. Under the optimal conditions, the half-life of the BbBgl is 180 h, much longer than the characterized β-glycosidases, and the Km and Vmax values are 2.7 mM and 39.8 µmol/mg/min for ginsenoside Rd. Moreover, the enzyme exhibits strong tolerance against high substrate concentration (up to 40 g/l ginsenoside Rd) with a molar biotransformation rate of 96% within 12 h. The good enzymatic properties and gram-scale conversion capacity of BbBgl provide an attractive method for large-scale production of rare ginsenoside CK using a single enzyme or a combination of enzymes.

Sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SADN) is a promising technology for nitrogen removal from wastewater. In this study, different-strength SMFs (0, 5, 20, 50, 70 mT) were evaluated to investigate the potential of external static magnetic field (SMF) for enriching sulfur-oxidizing autotrophic denitrifiers (SOAD). 50-mT and 70-mT SMFs were most suitable to accelerate the growth of SOAD and the elimination of non-SOAD. The relative abundance of Thiobacillus significantly increased (p 0.01) from 6.26% in control reactor to 36.15% under 50 mT and 52.51% under 70 mT. Under 50 mT, Thiobacillus denitrificans accumulated most rapidly, with the largest population. Furthermore, functional gene forecast by high-throughput and metagenomic sequencing indicated that SMF changed the two-component system, the adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling system, the phosphotransferase system (PTS), as well as N/S-related enzymes to regulate stress-response and promote the growth of SOAD. The findings indicated that SMF accelerated the start-up of SADN.

Three types of well-ordered covalent two-dimensional tilings including triangular, rhombille and semi-regular Archimedean tilings were successfully constructed via on-surface Schiff base reaction. Among them, the covalent organic framework (COF) constructed from a C6 symmetry monomer and C3 symmetry monomer is the first reported COF with kgd (rhombille tiling) topology.

With a remarkably high energy density and high safety, all-solid-state lithium–sulfur (ASSLS) batteries have emerged as promising next-generation energy storage systems. Direct tracking of the structural evolution at the solid–solid interfaces in an ASSLS battery is highly significant for deep understanding of the reaction mechanism to further improve the electrochemical performance. Herein, we present in situ monitoring of the evolution processes at both the cathode/electrolyte and anode/electrolyte interfaces in working ASSLS batteries via real-time optical microscope (OM) imaging. An irreversible transformation from bright-white to dark-brown in the polymer–ceramic composite electrolyte was directly captured upon discharge/charge, which indicates a shuttling process of polysulfides in the solid-state electrolyte further supported by XPS and Raman analyses. Furthermore, the in situ visualization of the temperature dependency of structural evolution clearly reveals that temperature greatly influences the polysulfide shuttling, irreversible volume-change of solid-state electrolytes and volume expansion of Li metal, which are directly correlated with the degradation of battery performance. These results provide a deep insight into the evolution processes of both structure and component in a working ASSLS battery, which could guide one to explore the electrochemical reactions at solid–solid interfaces and failure mechanism to design high performance lithium–sulfur batteries.

We report on the two-dimensional self-assembly of C2v-symmetric [1,1′:3′,1′′-terphenyl]-3,3′′,5,5′′-tetracarboxylic acid (TPTA) at the solid/liquid interface by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Two kinds of different self-assembly structure, i.e. a close-packed and porous rosette structure, are formed by TPTA molecules through intermolecular hydrogen bonds. When adding coronene (COR) as a guest into the TPTA assembly, structural transformation from a densely packed row structure to a rosette network structure is observed. It was found that two kinds of cavities with different sizes in the rosette network structure can be used to realize the selective co-adsorption of guest molecules with appropriate shape and size. Three-component 2D host–guest structures were successfully constructed by using 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis(4-bromophenyl)benzene (HBPBE) and copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as guest molecules.

Hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite (HOIP) materials have caught significant attention in photovoltaics and photoelectronics for their outstanding photovoltaic properties. However, their instability to various environment, such as illumination, temperature, moisture and oxygen, hinders their way to commercialization. To figure out the interaction mechanism between H2O and CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3), extensive theoretical studies have been carried out; however, the experimental results are insufficient and inconsistent. Here, we systematically investigate and compare the influence of H2O on MAPbI3 perovskite films with or without DMF) post-annealing in dark or light condition. The interaction between H2O and the surface of pristine MAPbI3 leads to the fusion of grain boundaries thus grain growth into micron level in short-time moisture exposure. While the penetration of H2O into MAPbI3 results in swelled crystalline whisker, cracking into smaller grains in long-time exposure upon the release of H2O. However, no degradation occurs in dark condition. As the DMF post-annealing treatment changes the surface states of MAPbI3, the interactions between the external H2O and internal MAPbI3 significantly varies from the pristine MAPbI3. Three different surface states with different topographies have influence on the interaction process and mechanism with H2O, leading to different decomposition rates, the striped surface that is the most rough among the three and experiencing the minimum change in surface potential with exposure to 80% humidity decomposes into PbI2 fastest. However, the addition of light will once again affect the aforementioned process. It is found that even ambient light could severely speed up the moisture-induced decomposition of MAPbI3, while the N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) post-annealing treatment significantly improves the stability of MAPbI3 films upon exposure to humidity and illumination, benefiting from the MAI-deficient thus H2O resistant surface.

Here we show a conceptual approach to realize the scanning tunneling microscopy based induced-assembly of fullerene (C60) molecules on top of a buffer organic adlayer at room temperature in a solution environment. The realization of spatially-defined C60 assembly is attributed to the modulation of substrate-molecular interactions with the assistance of a buffer layer.

We report the potential and concentration controlled assembly of an alkyl-substituted benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (DDBDT) on an Au(111) electrode by in situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM). It is found that a lamellar structure is formed at low concentrations, while herringbone-like and rhombus structures are obtained at high concentrations. In situ STM results reveal that herringbone-like and rhombus structures could transform into lamellar structures when the electrode potential is tuned negatively. A phase diagram is obtained to illustrate the relationship and effects of concentration and substrate potential on the interfacial structures of DDBDT. Both the substrate potential and the solute concentration can modulate the self-assembly structure through changing the molecular surface density. The results provide important insights into the understanding and precise control of molecular self-assembly on solid surfaces through a combination of different approaches.

The increased communication bandwidth demands of high performance computing (HPC) systems calling at the same time for reduced latency and increased power efficiency have designated optical interconnects as the key technology in order to achieve the target of exascale performance. In this realm, technology advances have to be accompanied by the development of corresponding design and simulation tools that support end-to-end system modeling in order to evaluate the performance benefits offered by optical components at system scale. In this paper, we present recent advances on electro-optical printed circuit boards (EOPCB) technology development pursued within the European FP7 PhoxTroT research program and directed toward system-scale performance benefits in real HPC workload applications. We report on high-density and multilayered EOPCBs together with all necessary building blocks for enabling true optical blade technology, including multimode polymer-based single- and dual-layer EOPCBs, a board-compatible optically interfaced router chip, and passive board-level connectors. We also demonstrate a complete optical blade design and evaluation software simulation framework called OptoHPC that tailors optical blade technology development toward optimized performance at HPC system scale, allowing for its validation with synthetic workload benchmark traffic profiles and for reliable comparison with existing HPC platforms. The OptoHPC simulator is finally utilized for evaluating and comparing a 384-node HPC system relying on optically enabled blades with the state-of-the-art Cray XK7 HPC network when performing with a range of synthetic workload traffic profiles, revealing the significant throughput and delay improvements that can be released through application-oriented optical blade technology.

The commercial adoption of electro-optical printed circuit board (EOCB) technology will be accelerated by the development of industrial and conformity standards for high volume fabrication, connector assembly and waveguide measurement. In this paper, we introduce international standardisation activities surrounding EOCBs and report on industrial processes developed for the high volume fabrication of complex EOCBs with embedded multimode polymer waveguides including a first connector standard for polymer waveguide termination. We focus on solving a serious historic problem with the measurement of optical waveguide systems, namely the lack of harmonised measurement conditions for optical waveguides, which to this day gives rise to strong inconsistencies in the results of measurements by different parties on the same waveguide. We report on the development of a standard to ensure repeatable measurement of optical waveguides, whereby we demonstrate how the application of a measurement identification system and proposed reference measurement conditions can bring variation in measurement results to within 5%, thereby serving as the basis for a formal reliable optical waveguide measurement methodology.

The design and construction of stable porous networks featuring tunable cavities for selective guest inclusion remains a great challenge in construction of functional miniature devices. Herein we report on construction and guest inclusion of stable 2D porphyrin-based molecular square grids connected by imine bonds showing crystalline pattern with periodic square cavities. Diperylene diimides molecules can be decorated into the square pores of the porphyrin-based molecular template on HOPG surfaces. The periodicity control over the covalent molecular grid and thus that of guest molecules is demonstrated by changing the building block. The preparation of robust host–guest systems may facilitate the fabrication of molecular miniature devices with designable properties.

Magnesium (Mg) metal batteries are attractive due to their high energy density and low cost. However, the progress of rechargeable Mg batteries is hindered by the limited options of Mg-ion electrolytes, serious electrode passivation and poor cycling performance. Direct visualization of the dynamic processes of electrochemical deposition/stripping of metallic Mg is of great significance for intensive understanding the degradation mechanism. Herein, the deposition/stripping process of Mg is directly tracked by using in situ optical microscope and in situ atomic force microscope. It is shown that the growth of deposited Mg is dynamically slow and the dissolution process is obviously irreversible in magnesium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Mg(TFSI)2)-based electrolyte. Interestingly, it is found that the weak reversibility is mainly caused by the point-contact of the deposited Mg to the electrode. By introducing magnesium borohydride (Mg(BH4)2) to improve the stability of the electrolyte, the nucleation sites significantly increased and closely packed on the electrode during the deposition. Moreover, the connection between deposited Mg and electrode turns into surface-contact mode, in which ion transmission and the reaction reactivity is greatly improved, revealing that the stability of the electrolyte to the electrode could affect the nucleation process and thus change the contact mode. These findings provide direct insights into the electrolyte-dependent reactivity and performance degradation mechanisms in Mg metal batteries.

An understanding of the formation mechanism of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film at the nanoscale is paramount because it is one of the key issues at interfaces in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we explored the nucleation, growth, and formation of SEI film on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate in ionic liquid-based electrolytes 1-butyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ([BMP]+[FSI]−) and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([BMP]+[TFSI]−) by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and found that the types of anions have significant influence on the structure of the formed SEI. In [BMP]+[FSI]− containing LiFSI, a compact and thin SEI film prefers to grow in the plane of HOPG substrate, while a rough and loose film tends to form in [BMP]+[TFSI]− containing LiTFSI. On the basis of in situ AFM observations, the relationship between the SEI structure and the electrochemical performance was clarified.
